Donald Trump lies about the size of the audience for his State of the Union address

Of course this isn’t the most important thing. Of course it’s much more important to note that this week, Donald Trump refused to initiate Russian sanctions. It’s much more important to discuss the realization that Devin Nunes has been significantly compromised and that his “dirty trick” came from the White House. It’s much more important to talk about Trump wanting the DOJ and FBI to act like Vegas-style loyalty enforcers in a petty dictatorship. But if I learned one thing from Agatha Christie, if someone lies about smaller, less important subjects, that means there are much bigger lies behind it.

So what is today’s dumb little lie? It was about Donald Bigly’s sad State of the Union address. I only watched about five minutes of it. Most people didn’t watch it at all, because most people are just sick of the Stable Genius. Here are the true facts about the ratings for the SOTU:

President Trump averaged 45.6 million viewers for his first State of the Union address, according to Nielsen estimates for 12 broadcast and cable networks.

Trump’s turnout was down about 2 million from his speech last year, officially known as an Address to the Joint Sessions of Congress in the first year of a presidency. And it fell below similar speeches in President Obama’s first two years in office: 52.4 million in 2009 and 48 million a year later.

[From USA Today]

Once again, President Obama was BIGGER. Or, biglier, if you will. Obama’s inauguration was bigger. Obama’s joint-session address had a bigger audience. Obama’s first SOTU had a bigger audience. But Trump is obsessed with lying about the SIZE of his audience, his crowd.

“The highest number in history…” Who f–king tells him this sh-t? Or perhaps the better question is, why does Trump want us to talk about the lie about the audience? Is it because he doesn’t want us to talk about the un-implemented Russian sanctions, or Mueller looking at Hope Hicks for obstruction of justice, or Devin Nunes being compromised, or the million other terrible stories?

Or the fact that sancitioned Russian spies were let into the country by the Secretary of State.
Or that Rethugs are dropping like flies.

I honestly hope by the end of this the rethugs no longer exist. Getting rid of one political party will not change this country, but it will just make me happier to have all of them gone.

    • whatWHAT? says:

yeah, the GOP members retiring is VERY INTERESTING. quite a few of them are committee chairs, too. even if the dems take back the senate/house, they’d STILL be high ranking members on those committees. the fact that so many GOP are jumping ship and, again, that so many are high ranking officials?… makes one wonder if some of them aren’t compromised, too. or, at least, they know what’s coming and are getting out while the getting is good.

Rumors are that Gowdy will be given a spot on a federal appeals court where he can continue to wreak havoc for decades

      • Christin says:

Take the money and run? They fulfilled their wealthy donors’ wishes (tax cuts primarily for the rich, total repeal of estate tax).

      • hogtowngooner says:

The guy who, when questioning Cecile Richards, talked over her and completely contradicted her response by saying “Well, it’s not what you say, it’s what you mean.”

Yeah, that’s a guy I want listening to two arguments and making a final decision.

I can’t even express how much I hate these people.

  2. Hh says:

The Trump Administration is exhausting because everyone sucks. If it’s not Donald lying, then it’s Ivanka. If not Ivanka, then Jared. If not Jared, then Don Jr. Or maybe Eric. If it’s not a member of the family, then it’s Kellyanne, Sarah Huckabee, or Hope Hicks. If it’s not any of his mouthpieces, then it’s people who have forsaken their duty, like Jeff Sessions, Mike Pence, Paul Ryan, or Mitch McConnell. Then you have the low key sucky people. Like the director of the CDC who had to resign because she was investing in tobacco—yes, tobacco—companies, AFTER her appointment. So much awfulness. Make it stop.

  3. swak says:

Of course most of his base watched Fox News because they wanted the slanted take on the address. Not to mention it was reported that he made a mistruth every 4.5 minutes of his speech. This is all to hide what is going on with Hope Hicks and more.

  4. Beth says:

He cares too much about ratings and crowd size. Trumps still thinking this is all a reality show and he’s the game show host.

I turned off the TV and went to dinner instead of being one of the supposed 45.6 million watchers

  5. Elkie says:

Maybe Trump isn’t lying because the information he’s relaying is an accurate reflection of what he’s been told?

Which means that he totally is a brain-damaged toddler whose handlers spoon-feed him whatever bulls*** makes him happy at any given moment to stop him deliberately soiling himself out of spite…

    • Juls says:

You could be right. I think it’s a little from column a, a little from column b. He deliberately lies, AND he is deliberately lied to.
ETA: LoL at deliberately soiling himself out of spite.

    • H says:

This is what I’m thinking. That there’s somebody around to soothe his ego and tell him, “you had the best speech, the highest numbers and everyone loves you,” so he doesn’t throw a tantrum like a two-year-old.

  6. Nicole says:

the guy would lie about it raining outside if it fit his narrative.
    but lets not get distracted.

  7. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

It’s baffling. Is he trying to make a point? Does he know he’s delivering ‘fake news’ thus contributing to his bigliest complaint evah… the so sad and bad fake news? Is he deflecting? Does he have the capacity to deflect? Why are we okay with our dictator gaslighting us? This is not okay, I have nothing but contempt for the republican party.

    • Juls says:

The only thing more infuriating than the gaslighting is the knuggle-dragging, boot-licking, zombified Trump supporters that fall for it.

  8. lightpurple says:

Not only smaller than Obama’s first SOTU but also smaller than Bush’s and Clinton’s.

In two more of his toilet musings this morning, he tweets that he is going to West Virginia to work with Republicans on fixing DACA and other problems and blasts the Democrats as being obstructionists for not joining in. The Democrats were not invited to West Virginia.

Also, our government is only funded through next Friday and where are our national leaders whose job it is to fix that? At a party in West Virginia for several days. Ryan should have canceled that damn retreat but this shows where his priorities are.

  9. PunkyMomma says:

More shiny objects, while CIA Chief Mike Pompeo meets and greets Russian spies, including the SANCTIONED Chief of Russia’s Spy unit, courtesy of the Russian Press.

Yes, this information was not released to the American people via our government, but disclosed via the Russians.

    Distract, distract, distract.

    Mueller, HELP US!

  10. EscapedConvent says:

It’s both pathetic and hilarious to me that he cannot do anything without declaring that it’s “the biggest in history,” “the best in the world,” “the greatest anyone has ever seen,” etc. His pathological need to be special, to be adored and worshipped, to be the biggest and the best, should scare everyone, but people don’t seem to be bothered by it. If he did nothing else, this would be a danger signal that something is profoundly wrong with him.

Apparently, no one even tells him how ridiculous he sounds.

  11. FLORC says:

This was exactly why these boycotts make sense. Trump measures success in rating and attention. Nothing else. So if he gets ignored or people keep discussing how Obama was better and bigger. It really eats him up inside.

    He’s an idiot.

  12. Miss Kittles says:

I’m sure he has a habit of lying about the size of things…

  13. Green Is Good says:

Why lie about shit that can easily be disproved? Christ, hurry Mueller!

  14. Lila says:

We are living in an age that words and facts don’t matter anymore? Very sad and scary.

  15. Sansa says:

Every time when Friends post lies on Facebook I feel it’s my civic duty to reply to the hard core Trump people. No matter how much you try to draw these folks into something you can both agree on they turn on you and twist it so Obama did it ( if it’s negative) and it’s completely untrue, and use multiple unequivocal comparisons . They really believe everything they see on line , where, with Russian right wing trolls making up content it’s just crazy.

    • Anniefannie says:

@Sansa it can the a thankless task but keep up the fight! I’ve been watching the Senate hearings on Russian interference and the reality that a cyber war on our elections is the real threat to our democracy seems to be just dawning on our elected officials. Clint Watts ( my new Boo) has been valiantly blaring this message with little traction. It’s going to take a village…

    • Juls says:

I had to stop trying with those people because it was affecting my health and my sanity. Kudos to you for continuing to try to reach them. I eventually unfollowed/unfriended most of the die-hard Trumpers. It was like screaming into the wind. At this point, anybody that still supports him is insane and/or completely brainwashed in my opinion. Trump could murder their mother in front of them and they would just cheer him on and joyfully talk about how he’s doing such a great job and keeping all of his promises and MAGA! I just don’t have room in my life anymore for those people. They are toxic and cannot be reached. We have lost them, even family members. It’s sad but I have to move on from them. They are in the way of progress.

  16. Mela says:

    To quote dumb and dumber!

Trump- you are one pathetic loser

  17. Lorelai says:

OF COURSE he did. JFC, this man.

  18. Anastasia says:

I actually totally forgot it was on. Was thinking about watching it earlier in the day, but I fell asleep on the couch. 🙂

  19. KiddV says:

I didn’t watch, I can’t stand to hear his voice, it is such an unpleasant sound. And when he’s reading off a teleprompter his voice is very monotone, like a kid being forced to read out loud in class and not really understanding what they’re reading.

  20. Jonesy says:

Donnie Dentures, the forever carnival barker who continues to display how unfit and unqualified he is for his current job.
