Jennifer Garner feels most beautiful in sweatpants without makeup

People Magazine is asking women what makes them feel most beautiful. Jennifer Garner’s answer is just what you’d expect from her – she feels the best when she’s chilling at home in comfortable clothes without makeup and with her glasses on. She did concede that it might not be the same as feeling beautiful, and she also included her kids in her answer. That might not be how she would typically answer that question – People’s Most Beautiful issue is heavily focused on motherhood and children. Here’s some of what she said:

To celebrate PEOPLE’s Beautiful Issue, we caught up with Garner to chat about what makes her feel most beautiful, and as it turned out, it’s when she’s not in any makeup at all.

“My kids are so relieved to see me take my makeup off and put glasses and sweatpants on,” she tells PEOPLE about what makes her feel her best. “I guess that doesn’t really count as feeling beautiful! It is more like feeling wanted and loved for being me, which is even better.”

Coincidentally, the first time she felt truly beautiful was when she got all dolled up for a school event, the sixth grade Santa Claus breakfast in elementary school. “I slept in pink sponge rollers the night before and wore some little elf costume my mom sewed for me,” she said. “I remember feeling cute and noticing that it was a new and different and nice way to feel.”

And despite having access to every top hair and makeup artist today, she’s most proud to have mastered the skill of “wearing just enough makeup to look better without anything extra,” she says.

But her most endearing answer was when she was asked what’s her favorite way to make the people she loves feel beautiful. “I love to take my mom and sisters shopping,” she says.

Of course she told a cute story about her childhood. I believe this about Garner, because we see her so often without makeup, sometimes with wet hair. She just wants to do her thing and not have to fuss over her styling. Kelly Clarkson said something similar in her People “Most Beautiful” interview, that she feels the best when she’s relaxed and without any makeup. She said “I just don’t really care.

In my bathroom there’s a little retro sign with a cherubic looking 50s pinup that says “hair and makeup, we can fix it.” This is my philosophy about styling. If I am feeling like crap, like now on this new birth control, I just do my hair and makeup, get dressed up and I feel much better. It’s not my job to do that though. Actresses and women in the media who have to go through extensive beauty prep probably do feel better when they can take it off, put on sweatpants and just be themselves at home. A lot of women feel better that way regardless, just not me.

Garner has some more interviews as she made an appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday to promote her upcoming action film, Peppermint, which is out this September. She talked about the physical training she went through for the role and her character’s motivation, which is to avenge her family’s death. ET asked Garner on the red carpet how she’s doing so well on Instagram and she said her assistant does the editing. She said “I just say to my awesome buddy, partner-in-crime, assistant, social media guru, Mo, I just say, ‘You know what would be funny? I wanna do me cleaning out this bag,’ and she’ll be like, ‘Ah, ok.’ And then she does it.

She’s so good at editing, I said, ‘How do you decide, when you’re editing, what to do?’ And she said, ‘I just make fun of you. Because we’re so close that I just pick out whatever is making fun of you.’ And then we put it up.

That’s surprisingly honest and helps explain how her videos are so well edited. Here are some more photos from her appearance in Vegas yesterday.

    Oooh, she looks GORGEOUS here!

And I love her answer. It’s honest that feeling her best, and her most herself, might not actually be when she feels the most beautiful- that’s something that a lot of women NOT in Hollywood probably can attest to too, so its only got to be 50 times worse in image-obsessed Hollywood, where “pretty enough” on the red carpet is not pretty enough- but that it’s more important, and a better feeling overall. I probably wouldn’t believe it coming from a lot of celeb’s mouths, but looking at how she dresses and styles her hair/makeup etc in her own life, I actually do 100% believe it from her.

Jennifer’s looking great. I’m happy for her.

I just haven’t been really impressed with her recent work. She knows how to act but isn’t given much to work with.

I watched Juno the other day and a certain scene with her, I always ball like a baby. It’s so emotional.

    • Jayna says:

I know that scene. She nailed it.

      • tracking says:

She really did. By far her best part/ performance imo.

Did you see her newest movie Love, Simon? It’s not a very big role, and you’re right- there isn’t a lot for her to do, but it’s a lovely, lovely movie and she makes the most of what time she has. There’s a really sweet scene with her character and her son near the end of the movie that left me really emotional.

Not just that one, the one where she was trying to get Jason Bateman’s character more involved was a heartbreaker as well. Him not really caring about the paint color and she soft pedaling about the baby books she had sectioned off for him to read.

When she saw Juno leaving and she just knew it was not on Juno. She asking Jason what he did. Her begging Juno to stay and talk it over. Damn. So good.

That movie really was some of her best work.

    Nice

I feel bettter when I’m not allowing the inner critic to dominate me. Some mornings I get out of bed and it’s into me before i’ve even made it to the kitchen. One time last year I actually said ‘Oh leave me alone’ to myself.

  5. Kata says:

This is such a cliche answer. I’m sure some of them really feel that way , but every actress ever gives that answer.

I would love if one of them would say I feel most beautiful all done up on the red carpet when professional hair and makeup people spent 4 hours on my appearance.

    • NΞΞNΔ ΖΞΞ says:

ITA… I think it’s how she wants to be perceived, but probably not how she actually feels

  6. Jenfan says:

Jen looks awesome in these pics.

  7. QueenB says:

“I believe this about Garner, because we see her so often without makeup, sometimes with wet hair.” That is obviously also part of her image but it really does give her more ground to stand on.

  8. Lucy2 says:

    Wow, her arms look amazing!
I could see rolling my eyes at this answer from any other celebrities, but I think she’s for real with it. She doesn’t seem to care about fashion and make up and all those sorts of things when she’s “off duty”. People constantly complain about her fashion choices, but who really cares if she’s just running errands?

  9. Nancy says:

    She’s all about those dimples…that’s her thing…

  10. Sparkly says:

I don’t know if I feel more ‘beautiful’, but I certainly feel better without makeup. I did up daily when I was younger, but now I don’t usually bother. I’ll go through the whole rigamorole every now and then, but I’d rather have the extra sleep and not have to worry all day about smearing stuff.

  11. Zondie says:

Kudos to her for recognizing what’s really important.

  12. Jayna says:

That dress looks great on her. I love the style of it.

  13. Tulip Garden says:

Garner looks amazing. I’ve always thought that she is really gorgeous on the red carpet. Her everyday clothing choices aren’t my favorites but, even then, she is a very attractive woman.

    • tracking says:

      Completely agree, Tulip.

    • Tiffany says:

Speaking of everyday style, that just pings my ‘PR’ radar with her because she wants to look like a everyday Mom, but still is walking around with killer purses worth thousands of dollars.

  14. Lisa says:

If I’m at home, I do too.

  15. kb says:

she is insanely perfect! love her!

    • alice says:

No one’s perfect, especially someone who chooses to mate and procreate 3x with someone like Ben Affleck. She has her own issues. She’s better at hiding them from the public but they’re obviously there. What kind of person sees that Ben had been to rehab, is a raging narcissist, had just been dumped by his fiancee for cheating on her with strippers, and thinks, “he’d make a great husband and father, let me throw away 12 years on him”? Someone with issues.

  16. Carolnr says:

I think she is a very athletic girl even when she is not gearing up for a movie. She seems to like to hike, run, and exercise. (There have been many pics over the years of her doing that) You usually dont wear alot of makeup when doing those activities. (I don’t at least) She is going to her children’s activities and when doing that you want to be comfortable ( i do)
It seems like handbags are her thing! Everyone has their own “thing!!!”
And she looks fantastic in that dress!!!
