During the Olympics, Norway’s Princess Mette-Marit missed the games because she was dealing with a really horrible situation with her oldest son. Mette-Marit was a single mother when she married Prince Haakon, and they raised Marius Borg Høiby together, alongside his new half-siblings. Marius grew up to be quite the a–hole. According to Norwegian gossips, Marius has been getting into sh-t for years, although his antics and crimes rarely make the news. Well, Marius’s current situation is that he was arrested for domestic violence on a woman who was likely his girlfriend. He was put in jail for more than a day but now he’s out and facing criminal charges. Norway has a tabloid industry too, and they got their hands on some of the crime scene photos:
Crime scene snaps showing a knife lodged in a wall are the latest headache for the Norwegian royal family, going public a week after the crown princess’ son was arrested. Marius Borg Høiby, 27, was taken into custody and tossed in solitary confinement on Aug. 4 after he “psychologically and physically” attacked his girlfriend and damaged her Oslo apartment, reported Se og Hør.
Now, photos published by Se og Hór this week have shown his girlfriend’s damaged home, with a shattered chandelier lying on the ground and the eerily out-of-place chef’s knife stuck in the wall.
The Norwegian magazine also reported that a recorded call—intercepted from Skaugum Estate—also captured Høiby threatening to “set fire to and burn the girl’s clothes and belongings.” Høiby has denied all accusations levied against him.
Other details about the allegedly violent episode remain unknown, but police said in a statement that the alleged victim, a woman in her 20s, was not seriously injured by the “physical abuse.”
Høiby no longer has an official role in Norway’s royal family, but he’s been among its most prominent faces after his mom, Mette-Marit, wedded Crown Prince Haakon in 2001—the man who’s next in line to be king. Mette-Marit had Høiby from a previous relationship. She and Haakon have welcomed in two children together: Princess Ingrid Alexandria, 20, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 18. They are second and third in line to the Norwegian throne.
Høiby has been criticized for not carrying himself like his royal siblings, mom, and stepdad. He’s gotten a number of tattoos and reportedly works as a motorcycle mechanic, having stepped down from royal duties when he was 20.
Høiby is now facing a sentence of up to a year in prison after his arrest, and one of his ex-girlfriends has since spoken out on Instagram suggesting he’s acted violently previously. Juliane Snekkestad posted that she no longer wanted to be “silent” about the alleged matter. She said bluntly, “This has happened before. And this must be stopped now.” No other details were shared.
I absolutely believe that he used the knife to threaten her and I seriously doubt this is the first time he’s hurt a woman. He should go to prison for a lot longer than a year if convicted. It sounds like he completely terrorized this poor woman. Also: there’s a wide chasm between this crime and “Høiby has been criticized for not carrying himself like his royal siblings, mom, and stepdad.” He’s not royal, he doesn’t have to carry himself in a royal way. The problem here isn’t that he acted “undignified” or that he lacked class – it’s that he violently assaulted his girlfriend and the royal family has apparently turned a blind eye to his crimes for many years.

Ugh, I hope the brave complainant can get justice and peace and move on with her life. On a more petty note, he really has that Matt Gaetz square forehead doesn’t he? Like a billboard up there.
That knife in the wall did some eloquent work last week in emphasizing the seriousness of what Hoiby did. Thank goodness there’s visual evidence, the recorded phone call and another ex stating that this is not a once-off incident. It really sucks that his (ex?) girlfriend might need that kind of coverage to get her (ex?) boyfriend to face charges. The royals can’t make this disappear.
I’m confused as to why the DB felt the need to point out that Marius works as a car mechanic and has tattoos. What has that got to do with anything? It sounds like he acted violently toward this woman, he has a pattern of doing so, and hopefully, he’ll get what’s coming to him for those actions. But his job or his tattoos isn’t what determines that!
I thought that was shoddy too. Why shouldn’t he have a job instead of living off the public?
I am curious why the day he stepped back from Royal duties when he never had such duties as far as I know.
He never had any Royal duties and, at the time, they made it simply sound as though he wanted to have a private life as opposed to participating in public family events. There was never any question about his being a working royal.
Marius has gone to college in the United States for about a year (when they announced he was “stepping back”) but he ended up withdrawing. So the emphasis on “mechanic” is just reminding us that he never graduated.
A few other previous girlfriends have come out and said that same thing, that he abused them – so yeah the little punk has been getting away with it for years. It would not surprise me if his parents used their clout to get the press to keep quiet about it (his mother has already been in contact with the victim) – this is VERY embarrassing for them. From what I’ve read he was pretty much made to step away from his royal duties (his issues could be the reason why) and has already been caught out by the tabloids calling himself a Prince. So will be interesting to see what else comes out.
I know he has since admitted that he has MH and substance abuse issues that he’s going to get treatment for. I hope he gets the help he truly needs and can turn his life around. Maybe a jail sentence will be the kick up the ass he needs to change.
Interesting story. I too hope he gets the help he so desperately needs and he should thank his lucky stars he has the means to do so.
I hope his victims get the help and safety they obviously so desperately need.
I think another story is that his mom went to talk to the victim. How is that even allowed? I hope her lawyer was present.
I also saw that he apologised to his family and his victim. Should the victim come first?
Yeah the way this story is written is off-putting. He’s not a royal and never had royal duties. He’s been accused serous crimes and the narrative that he’s not acting like a royal as if royals are not capable of doing the same is just wrong. I wish royals would pay for their crimes.
Exactly. What royal way? 🙄 Fraternising with pedo traffickers, pedo advisors, racists, photographed with unexplained bruises, taking cash for honours, cash from terrorists etc etc etc. Trailer trash with tiaras. They are no better, but are definitely worse than the average pleb.
The Royal way is: don’t get caught
They don’t care what you do (Andrew!) just don’t get caught doing it.
Reminds me of the Murdough family here in US. And if they get caught, it can be erased or buried. Seems to be the way of the rich and powerful.
I had no idea, and I hate that this is what was happening with Marius this entire time. I’ve always liked MM and Haakon and I sort of hoped that Marius was living a normal life somewhere. Too bad.
Norwegian Jails makes Club Fed look like Rikers. They focus on rehabilitation first vs. punishment and treatment usually involves counseling. Could be the best thing that ever happened to him. There’s obviously some rage there.
Here’s a great article w/pics on Norway’s very successful prison systems: https://www.businessinsider.com/why-norways-prison-system-is-so-successful-2014-12
If I ever decide to commit a crime, it will be in Norway.
Now he is saying he has mental health struggles and is going to rehab.
Was Mette-Marit on drugs when she was pregnant? Would explain lot…
I hope the gravity of being sentenced can permeate his perspective. He strikes me as someone who has a lot of rage and needs to understand it and make peace with it (aside from express it), but because he’s MM’s son, he has a status seen as desirable and where that has gone unchallenged. Norwegian prison may be the thing powerful enough to shake him up and scare him into being a better person, and I hope the process works to rehabilitate and check him.
One thing to note about the call intercepted from the Skaugum Estate — that’s the official residence of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess. So Marius was making those calls from his stepdad’s house.
