Colman Domingo paid tribute to the late Andre Leon Talley at the Met Gala

Colman Domingo was one of this year’s Met Gala cochairs. Colman is really having a moment, picking up Oscar nominations in consecutive years, and generally being the best-dressed man at every event he attends. He arrived at the gala pretty early, and at first he wore a blue Valentino cape as a tribute to the late Andre Leon Talley (who famously wore a blue kaftan to the gala one year). Then the cape was removed to reveal a speculator Valentino suit. Colman’s husband Raul also wore Valentino. Colman’s jewels are Boucheron. The men’s jewelry was fantastic across the board at this gala.

Lana del Rey also wore Valentino – I didn’t think this was particularly on-theme, but it was a pretty gown, beautifully made. She also wore gator clips in her hair, a nod to her new swamp-dwelling husband.

Sha’Carri Richardson was part of the Met Gala’s host committee this year, and she also wore Valentino. Her look was one of my favorites of the night – I feel like she’s referencing the Black church. I love how this feels like such a vintage look too (it’s not, it was designed for her).

Three men, all in Valentino: Alton Mason, Justice Smith and Barry Keoghan. I have no idea what Barry’s doing, but Alton and Justice had a blast with this theme. So many men enjoyed themselves and dandied the f–k out.

My first thought on seeing Colman: Oh my, he’s come to take us all to church! I didn’t realize it was a tribute to the late great Andre Leon Talley.

Alton Mason looked fantastic! Plus, the guy knows how to pose!

  3. Jais says:

Colman is such a stunner. And his husband. And their clothes were so well-done.

  4. Normades says:

Alton Mason is a model and it shows. That look is incredible on him

  5. QuiteContrary says:

    Colman is such a king.

And I have to say that Jalen Hurts and his wife Bry also looked fantastic.

  6. Grant says:

Wow — these are all GREAT looks. Sha’Carri looks incredible. I think Alton’s is my favorite though. So on-theme, so sexy, LOVE the pants and the boots and the cut-out!

  7. Walking the Walk says:

Colman looked fire! With the cape and with it off.

My first job out of college, in the mid-80s, had me running mechanical boards up to the C-Suite at Conde Nast on the regular. I’d often wind up in the Elevator of Fashion Death with Mr. Andre Leon Talley, who in those days was dressing in the most exquisite bespoke English suits you’ve ever seen. I am a short little person, who worked in a casual office so I was usually in khakis and topsiders and a hideous but beloved leather bomber jacket I bought for $20 off 2 addicts at St. Marks Square. I’d hide behind Mr. Talley like Homer Simpson fading into the bushes, as the Mean Conde Nast Girlies would get on and off. He totally knew and he was totally nice about it and neither of us EVER acknowledged that it was happening. RIP to a class act.

Did Barry Keoghan think the theme was pre-revolutionary Russian?

  10. Kirsten says:

Coleman looked fantastic in the cape and suit. Perfect. No notes. Not a fan of Sha’Carri’s dress for this — this could be for pretty much any formal red carpet. I also don’t know what Barry is doing — that is both not on theme and just generally bad.

  11. Mollie says:

Talking about a chair nailing the theme! Colman looked fantastic!

  12. Meg says:

How can you not mention Sir Lewis Hamilton, another co-chair? He’s right there looking sensational. He posted the details of his outfit to his Instagram. Amazing details
