ASAP Rocky thought Anna Wintour’s offer to co-chair the Met Gala was a prank

I think by all accounts, the Met Gala this year was one of the best ever. The theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” was communicated clearly (cough Sleeping Beauties-Reawakening Fashion-Garden of Time cough). Not only that, but the theme was so strong that it felt like it brought out the best in the attendees. The four co-chairs for the night, as chosen by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, were Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and ASAP Rocky. I don’t know whether they coordinated or not, but personally I loved how different each of them looked. And while I would have immediately gone into hibernation mode after such a swanky ball, Wintour and Rocky continued the party by appearing together on Late Night With Seth Meyers two days later. Which is how we learned that Rocky’s first reaction to Wintour asking him to co-chair was, “This is a prank.”

A$AP Rocky is clearly one of Anna Wintour’s favorite fashion aficionados of the moment, but even he wasn’t sure about the latest offer from Vogue’s editor-in-chief.

During an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” this week, the rapper revealed that he thought Wintour’s proposition for him to co-chair this year’s Met Gala was a prank.

“Absolutely,” the rapper said. “I tend to get these prank calls and, you know, I said, ‘Nah, this can’t be real.’”

It was indeed real, and “a dream come true” for Rocky.

The event had three other co-chairs as well: actor Colman Domingo, producer and musician Pharrell Williams, and Formula One racing superstar Lewis Hamilton.

Wintour told Meyers that coming up with the co-chair list was fairly easy, as she “had a list of four men, and they all said yes.”

The theme for this year’s Met Ball was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” with a focus on Black dandyism and menswear.

Rocky told Meyers that he was “happy” the theme was centered on “celebrating Black dandyism and Black excellence.”

“I was in awe,” he said.

Rocky and his longtime partner, Rihanna, made headlines even before the Met Gala started, when it was revealed the two are expecting their third child.

Wintour recently bestowed very high praise on the rapper and Rihanna, as she crowned them one of the most influential couples in fashion.

“First of all, they’re very talented, they’re very brilliant,” Wintour said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in March. “I think they have wonderful values, and they have an enormous amount of style.”

“I tend to get these prank calls…” Wait wait wait, you can’t dangle a nugget like that in front of Kismet and not expect me to come crying for more info! Who’s pranking ASAP Rocky?! Is it Cher? We know she has a list. And how wide-ranging are these pranks, like for work-related opportunities only, or is any topic fair game? We’re waiting on these details, Rocky. As for the interview, Rock and Wintour are a sweet, if odd couple. I was surprised that Wintour did most of the talking; I guess with The Devil Wears Prada, there’s such a myth around her that it was startling to hear her having a regular conversation, just like us! One of the more adorable moments was Rocky talking about his grandmother staying late at his after party, waiting to get a moment with “her husband,” aka Colman Domingo. Sadly, Grandma Rocky and Mr. Domingo did not cross paths that night, though Wintour helpfully chimed in with “I have his cell.” Of course it’s all moot, because Colman Domingo already has a husband. But even if that weren’t the case, a cell phone isn’t the way to reach Domingo — he contacts potential spouses through Craigslist missed connections!

Anyway, congrats to Rocky on his very much not-a-prank co-chairing at the Met. Next up for him: a role in Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest with Denzel Washington. The movie is premiering at Cannes — will we see more fashion from him soon? Will he bring Rihanna? Will Grandma Rocky and Colman Domingo finally meet on La Croisette??

The four co-chairs looked like they all had fun.

But I continue to be amazed by Anna’s power, pull and influence. “No” isn’t a word she is probably used to hearing.

  2. Goldenmom says:

He was absolutely delightful with her, and clearly she was playful with him. I’d never heard him speak before and now I get the appeal – he has serious old-school charm!

  3. HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

What’s with all the online rumors that he’s cheating on Riri?

  4. Truthiness says:

Seth is so nervous during this interview! He said a record number of uhs and ums while Anna questioned his absence twice.

I don’t think Andre Leon Talley parted on good terms with Anna, it’s too bad he didn’t get to see this year’s gala.

  5. J.Ferber says:

He looks exceptionally good and I’m sure he’s living his best life with his darling family. I think Rihanna is having another boy, just from her bump (bumpology?), but i know they’ll be deliriously happy whichever.
