The ‘After the Hunt’ trailer looks bananas, this is going to win so many awards

Whenever there’s a big awards-bait movie where there’s a twisty plot and lots of dialogue, I’m in. I take that bait every single time. Give me uncomfortable tension and actors showcasing their masterclass techniques – I will take that over literally every other kind of movie. Well, I will be SEATED for Luca Guadagnino’s new film, After the Hunt. Not only does it feature Movie Stars Showing They Can Really Act, the story is also set in academia, with a twisty he-said-she-said plot. Julia Roberts. Andrew Garfield. Ayo Edebiri. Chloe Sevigny. Michael Stuhlbarg. Emotions! Lies! Pill-popping! Scenes between Chloe and Julia!!!

It’s insane how much I want to see this movie. I never would have put Julia, Andrew and Ayo in a movie together but g–damn, this looks compelling. Awards prognosticators are already calling this a “major contender.” YAY! Just from the trailer… my prediction is for acting noms for all three leads. Andrew and Ayo will probably be considered in the supporting categories. After the Hunt will be released in October. I can’t wait!!

This film is produced by hardcore Trump supporter Brian Grazer.

    • Okay I’m out! I vote with my dollars so no dollars for this movie from me.

I am a pass as well. Julia Roberts still cannot act, it appears to have no connection to the reality of academia, and I have a feeling there will be sly references to how kids today are too soft, entitled, etc. I have zero interest in a movie that looks like it is filled with dumb tropes and absolutely no interest in puttng money in the pocket of whiny, “poor white men have it so hard” Grazer.

I do like all these actors but as an academic, the disconnect from academic reality is way too much for me too.

It looks like some mid-late 20th century fantasy of what small town New England college campus life might be like, not any kind of contemporary reality.

But more frustrating is the entire premise: while I have no doubt real people would doubt Edebiri’s character’s claims and want to exonerate their more powerful (and especially white, male) friend, it’s just not going to happen like this at a university.

Every single professor in the trailer is clearly in violation of their legal mandated reporter responsibilities – and as professors (or any other campus career that involves dealing with students) they are mandated reporters who have to renew their training every two years, so they would be fully aware that violating those requirements comes with a fine and jail time for them as individuals (i.e. it’s not just the institution that would be in trouble, but them personally).

I know it seems like a nitpick but it is SUCH a big deal if you actually are in academia it’s just wild to me that they would base a whole movie around a plot that requires ignoring this. (Unless it’s a period piece set before mandated reporter guidelines?)

And now that I know this movie is MAGA-made I will definitely be skipping.

Well that’s a disappointment 🙁 I will skip it now.

I love me some Chloe Sevigny. Frankly the whole cast is a great combination.

My one kvetch is that Ayo appears to be playing a college student? But she looks and carries herself like an almost 30 office worker. It seems like a power and experience imbalance between Ayo and Andrew is key. I wish she could have time traveled and 20 year old Ayo played this part. Maybe she is playing a grad student? Or maybe I was just a really immature undergrad and I am projecting my ideas of what a college student looks like lol

    • DK says:

I was so confused by the Ayo/Andrew argument about “your generation does this” “well your generation does that” at the start of the trailer, bc I was like…are you not the same generation?!
I truly thought at that point in the trailer that Ayo was also playing a professor. She looks way more polished than any of my undergrads, even when they show up to events with faculty/ at faculty member’s homes. (And my undergrads aren’t NOT polished, it’s just they would never dress like 30-somethings.)

      • Bqm says:

Ayo is 29 and Andrew 41. That puts them at opposite ends of the millennial generation (1983-1996).

      • ThatGirlThere says:

It looks like Ayo’s character is a TA so a graduate student. Her age and her style track if this is the case.

I feel like the whole movie was shown in the trailer.
