Taylor Swift will reportedly release some kind of film alongside the ‘Showgirl’ album

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour was a far-reaching, multi-platform phenomenon. There was the tour itself, a two-year endeavor with billions of dollars in ticket sales alone. There was all of the merchandising alongside the tour, with Taylor even setting up “tour shops” in advance of her concerts, and the merch business also made billions. Then Taylor organized an Eras concert film – she produced it herself, she didn’t work with any studio or major production company, and she presented the concert film as a finished product to AMC. The concert film became a phenomenon as well, and because Taylor pretty much did the whole thing in-house, she made a ton of money from the film as well. Well, in a few weeks, Taylor’s new album will be released. The Life of a Showgirl comes out on October 3rd. The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive – apparently, Taylor is releasing some kind of movie in theaters to coincide with the album drop.

Taylor Swift is prepping to return to theaters, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The news comes just weeks before the superstar is set to release her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl. The content of the theatrical event is unclear, but sources say that it will be tied to The Life of a Showgirl, Swift’s new studio album that drops on Friday, Oct. 3. Multiple sources say the theatrical event will also drop that weekend.

The event is shrouded in mystery, and it is unknown who directed the project, though it’s possible Swift helmed it herself after directing Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions documentary that hit Disney+ in 2020. Sam Wrench helmed 2023’s The Eras Tour movie.

Like her tour itself, The Eras Tour film was a phenomenon two years ago, becoming the top grossing concert film of all time with $261.6 million globally. Swift and her team financed the $15 million project herself, bypassing the Hollywood studio system and partnering with AMC Theatres on the project.

AMC did not respond to requests for comment as to its involvement, if any, in the upcoming special screening. But sources speculate that AMC could easily be in the mix. And, like other circuits, AMC is still recovering from a rough summer at the box office and can use all the special event content it can get. September has seen something of a rebound, but domestic revenue is up by only 6 percent over last year. At the beginning of June, revenue was up by more than 20 percent.

[From THR]

Taylor has been directing for several years now, as THR notes. She’s directed several of her music videos, as well as the short film for “All Too Well.” My guess is that she’s directed something Lemonade-esque featuring all or most of the songs in The Life of a Showgirl. Beyonce did it first! Beyonce’s Lemonade aired on HBO though. It’s interesting if this is Taylor’s route – like, will she even do any traditional “music videos” for this album, or is it all about the movie or whatever this is? Taylor has such power in the industry, if she says music videos are over, then they’re probably over.

“It just means she’s not too tired when it comes to draining money from her fans.”Between the albums, the re-releases, vinyls, tours, merchandise, and now movie releases — it’s just way too much. She’s already extremely rich.

She isn’t doing anything to her fans other than creating content for them. She doesn’t require you to purchase to be a fan.

I’m a big fan and outside the sweatshirt I got at the Eras Tour (I wanted a souvenir from the biggest concert since Michael Jackson) I’ve never bought anything. I even stream her albums and that is the norm for fans.

Others buy all the stuff and that is their right and business, but also on them only. Taylor isn’t doing anything that every musician doesn’t do- only she isn’t creating makeup or liquor or hair care, just music and some merch.

This is what we call actively looking for an issue when there isn’t one.

How is she “draining money” from her fans? She has no power to make them purchase her content. The fans willingly and knowingly purchase what they want to possess. No one has to spend money they don’t want to. My niece’s favourite possession is a “lover’s cardigan” that she had to scramble to buy because it was so popular. Do you complain about major corporations making money or is it just Taylor Swift that you feel is earning too much?

I understands that she has mastered making a lot of collectible things, limited editions, etc and that it comes across as a money grab to people for some reason. I’m not a Swiftie, I think I’ve bought an album or two for my girls on iTunes, and if she released a sparkly turquoise something to go with an album, I’d consider getting it just because that’s an itch in my brain. No one’s being forced to buy anything, if anything the market’s shown itself to be nearly infinite for her variety of products. I understand some people will feel left out if they can’t afford to get everything, but I dunno, that’s part of life. I don’t get everything I want as an adult and I didn’t get everything I wanted as a kid either. I guess I don’t understand this complaint? She’s a business and has been for an extremely long time

There have been rumors she was writing and directing a feature film so I wonder if it’s that, or a BTS documentary of the era’s tour.

The eras movie going on disney+ (RIP disney streaming) was the thing that pushed me over the edge into swiftiedom. I now own a bootleg of it, but will buy the official dvd if/when she puts one out.
I also paid ticketmaster’s more corrupt cousin stub hub a small fortune for an eras ticket- if we ever get our country back- corp monopolies, and caps on “handling” fees. And maybe for fun some ceo prison sentences for price gouging and fixing.

I’m not sure she can convince me to go to the movie theatre though.
With US secretary of disease hiding numbers on cases of tuberculosis, the flu and covid- i don’t really want to be in a crowded theatre.
We’ll see what it turns out to be.

She has such a good eye for what captures her fans, in content and aesthetics.

    • Glitterachi says:

Obviously stick within your own comfort zone, but you can definitely go to the movie without fear of catching anything as long as you mask and wash your hands/bring hand sanitizer. I’m living with my parents right now to help out as my mother goes through chemo, so we’ve all been back on Covid protocols since her immune system is shot right now, and lo and behold no one has gotten so much as a sniffle for a year. It really does work if you just stick to it.

  4. Digital Unicorn says:

You have to hand it to Taylor – she’s a prolific creator of content that her fans lap up. She’s the perfect example of someone who knows her fan base, cultivates them and gives them what they want.

Also, she knows how to make catchy music that sticks in your head. LOL.
