Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman have a new movie coming out on December 25 called Song Sung Blue. It’s based on a 2008 documentary about Mike and Claire Sardina, a Milwaukee-area couple that formed the famous Neil Diamond tribute band, Lightning & Thunder. It co-stars Michael Imperioli, Mustafa Shakir, Jim Belushi, and Fisher Stevens. Song Sung Blue premiered in Berlin, Germany on Wednesday. Kate and Hugh were both there with writer/director Craig Brewer. Hugh wore a basic, casual black suit with a white button-down shirt. It looks like his jacket had a zipper instead of buttons. Kate wore an electric blue, deep v-neck sheer Vera Wang dress with big dangling diamond earrings.
I have a mixed opinion on Kate’s Vera Wang. I normally do not like sheer dresses like this, but I was willing to give it a chance. When I first looked at it, I thought, “Oh, she’s pulling it off well.” Then, as I looked through more pictures, I realized, to borrow a quote from Clueless, it’s a Monet. It’s nice from afar but up close, it’s messy. I’ll start with the good: It’s a beautiful shade of blue that looks great on her. Kate’s styling is gorgeous. I also really like the back of the dress and don’t mind the jarring contrast of the black bra.
As for the not-so-good: The blue undergarment looks like a cross between granny panties and gym shorts, and the earrings are too much with the sleeves. Speaking of those puffy sleeves…no, thank you! The shorts and sleeves add frump to what would otherwise be a non-frumpy dress. Maybe I’m being a bit too hard on it, but I generally like Kate’s style and I loved that gorgeous copper-colored dress that she wore to the movie’s premiere at AFI Fest a few weeks ago. It was simpler, but much better. That said, I am looking forward to Kate’s fashion for the rest of the press tour. I predict more bold colors.

She looks like she’s wearing gym shorts under that?
HA — sorry, I didn’t read the post before commenting. I’m not the only one who thought “gym shorts,” I see.
It’s the gym shorts for me. I feel like even a slim slip-type skirt would be beautiful. But the velvet(??) shorts under the sheer dress is jarring. Too bulky and the shorts catch my eye even before the sleeves or the diamond earrings. Not sure if that was what they wanted…lol
Is the copper dress a Victoria Beckham? Looks like it.
Looks like a bathing suite cover up.
Agree, it’s a Monet.
I didn’t mind the undergarment from far away, but close up it doesn’t quite work; those sleeves are awful and the black bra doesn’t work for me either.
It would have been better as a sleeveless dress, v-neck or even halter, with self-lining at bust and hips.
It’s a gorgeous color. (I’m afraid we’re going to see a lot of blue dresses on this press tour.)
I HATE the pleating on the abdomen- it’s giving her fake belly rolls!
The blue tone of this 👗 dress reminds me of Yves Klein’s ultramarine blue.
I don’t understand this dress at all. The bra and shorts, as many have pointed out, don’t go with the dress at all. They seem like an afterthought…” oh, you can see through my dress, guess I’d better throw on the first bra and shorts I find in my laundry basket to cover up!” The black bra, the shorts that aren’t the same blue or material as the dress….and, this is one rare occasion when I’d prefer the granny panty to this gym shorts look. Both bra and shorts needed to be black, or even better, a complimentary blue to the dress. Pick a lane for god’s sake. Oh, and the ruching down the front is giving me painted-on abs.
Thank you for taking the time to summarise my confusion!
The sheer dress thing is so old. This could be so much prettier if she had worn a unitard/one-piece swimsuit style garment under.
