Teyana Taylor was shoved by a security guard as she was leaving the Oscars

I think Teyana Taylor had a good award season considering One Battle After Another was her first role in an awards-contender type film. She won a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice and several critics’ awards, plus she got SAG/Actor, BAFTA and Oscar nominations. She was also a key part of a now Best-Picture-Oscar-winning film. She announced herself as a major fashionista and a major actress. I’m sure she’s getting tons of scripts and offers. Plus, she seemed hyped not only about OBAA, but about everyone else during the awards season. Her excitement at seeing Michael B. Jordan and Amy Madigan win their Oscars on Sunday was lovely and endearing. Well, all of that will affect how the industry treats her going forward. But at the actual Oscars, she got into an “altercation,” at least that’s how some sites are referring to it. It sounds more like Teyana was assaulted and she stood her ground and screamed at the security guy who shoved her.

Teyana Taylor appeared to confront a security guard as the 2026 Oscars ended after an apparent incident in which the actress said the guard shoved her. Taylor, 35, could be seen yelling at a person offscreen in a video shared to X that appeared to be taken after the broadcast on Sunday, March 15, ended, as guests at the awards ceremony were leaving the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

“Because you’re a man putting your hands on a female! You’re very rude. You’re very rude,” Taylor could be heard saying in the video. “You’re very rude.”

“Because he’s putting his hands on a female! He literally shoved me… Do not shove me. Do not touch me. Do not push me,” she told other guests who approached her as the short video unfolded. At least one woman in the video can also be seen saying, “That was uncalled for,” to a person off-screen at the same time Taylor called them “very rude.”

Later in the evening, Taylor told TMZ of the incident in a separate video, which appeared to be taken later in the night elsewhere in L.A, “It’s all good. Everybody’s having a good time and security was just doing a lot.” “There’s always that one. But everything’s fine. I’m happy.”

“I mean, there’s nothing to wonder,” she added, when TMZ’s videographer said people “were wondering” what happened as she left the event. “I think the first thing people do is definitely make assumptions, but at the end of the day, I just don’t tolerate disrespect, especially when it’s unwarranted and it’s unprovoked, you know what I’m saying?”

In a statement shared with PEOPLE on March 16, Security Industry Specialists, Inc said, “There was a brief interaction involving Ms. Taylor and a member of our security team during the show last evening. Our security personnel were working to manage a crowded area and ensure the safety of all guests. During that interaction, there was incidental contact and we regret that the situation escalated. This is not the standard of professionalism we expect from our team, and we have addressed the matter internally to help ensure situations like this do not happen again.”

The Academy told PEOPLE in a statement that they were “were extremely upset to learn about the experience endured by Teyana Taylor at the end of the Oscars ceremony last night.”

“We have worked with Teyana over the last several months during awards season, and she has been nothing short of remarkable, supportive, kind, and all about community,” the statement reads. “Though the incident was with our outside security firm SIS, the experience of every single guest is our responsibility. We have made it clear to them that this behavior is not acceptable. We want to thank Teyana for showing remarkable grace, and we are taking the appropriate measures to ensure this does not happen again.”

I appreciate that the Academy’s statement centers Teyana and takes responsibility for what happened, even if they outsource their security. I mean… the Academy stays disrespectful of Black artists in general, but even they know it’s a terrible look when a Black woman and an Oscar nominee gets man-handled or assaulted AT the Oscars. I’m including the video of the aftermath of the incident, where Teyana was telling the security guy (who is off-camera) that he’s being disrespectful. This f–king sucks and she looked really upset.

Feels like Cannes once again. What is wrong with these people, high on power.

I was thinking the exact same thing. What’s with these security guards at these award shows? I understand that they have to keep spaces clear and move people along, but you shouldn’t be putting your hands on it people at all.

Even the jerkiest of actor’s understand the photo call and that they need to move along. These people just really don’t like having some people in these spaces and you can tell.

    • SussexWatcher says:

100% same. And yes, always BIPOC. It’s exhausting.

I appreciate the statement by the academy though – no equivocating, no both siding it (like the security firm’s statement).

      • SIde Eye says:

Yes to everything all of you said it’s always POC. And I agree finally a statement acknowledging the harm caused and centering on the person wronged. BAFTA should take notes.

  2. SarahLee says:

Imagine if the BAFTAs handled their business that quickly.

  3. manda says:

This makes me sad because she was so excited during the show!

  4. Kate says:

She should have pulled out the headlock she put on PTA when they won! She’s strong as hell, the security guard is lucky he didn’t give that kind of shove to a delicate waif who would’ve fallen right over!

  5. Giddy says:

I wrote yesterday that she was my favorite person to watch during the broadcast. She was happy and excited for others when they won, and she looked so, so beautiful. The cretin who shoved her should lose his job. He was supposed to be there to protect, not to assault.

  6. Theresa says:

We are seeing more and more of this type of rude and horrible behavior…hate to say it but from white people…thank you President Chump for making this type of thing normal again…sarcasm btw

  7. smcollins says:

Ugh… I hate that for her. What is it with some of these security people thinking they have the right to put their hands on *anyone*??
She seems like such a sweet and joyful person and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she does next.

  8. bisynaptic says:

    They’re praying she doesn’t sue.

    • Angelica Schuyler says:

She should totally sue the security company. Make them pay a huge sum out of pocket. That’s the only thing they understand – financial consequences. Otherwise they’ll continue this type of behavior.

  9. YankeeDoodles says:

I am *so* gratified to read the profuse apology and personal regret from the Academy. Thank god. It is just not okay to put your hands on other people. To take up the role of gatekeeper is entirely obnoxious, entitled, petty, and point-scoring. And it has nothing to do with “security” when you’re singling someone out. And yes, it is *always* a woman who is not white. Would you put your hands on a white man? No. A black man? No. An Asian man? No. A white woman? No. An Asian woman? No. A black woman? Oh, that’s fine, then. It’s such unremitting BS.

  10. QuiteContrary says:

She handled that really well — I would have lost my mind. But then Black women aren’t allowed to be overly angry in public, even (or probably especially) when anger is merited.

Glad she got support from the Academy.

    • Beverley says:

☝🏾Damn right. TT knew she could only go so far in her anger and response. WOC, especially Black women, aren’t allowed to be upset or angry in public. It’s the Angry Black Woman trope again, even if there’s every reason to react with anger. “Angry Black Women” cause white tears and white discomfort…and we can’t have that!

  11. BeanieBean says:

🤦‍♀️. This should NOT still be happening.

  12. LynZ says:

She has since said that all is well now and she had a great time. She talked about being thrilled for Amy Madigan because why shouldn’t she hold joy in her heart for whoever won. She really is a class act!

  13. Jen says:

She’s a woman who knows her worth. Good for her for standing up for herself, and also for not letting it get her down. Class act.
