Sean Penn flew to Ukraine before the Oscars & met with Pres. Zelenskyy

Behind the scenes at every Oscar ceremony, they make all of the year’s Oscar-winning actors pose together for photos. This year, only Michael B. Jordan, Jessie Buckley and Amy Madigan were there to pose together. But that worked out well – the vibe between those three was wonderful, and there are tons of cute photos of the three of them together, including posing in the Oscar photo-booth. Just know that if Sean Penn had been there, his ham-face would have killed the vibe spectacularly. He would have been grumpily chain-smoking and making everyone miserable. I’m actually glad he didn’t turn up for the Oscars, although it would have been better overall if the Best Supporting Actor award had gone to Delroy Lindo or Stellan Skarsgard. So where was Penn? As it turns out, he headed to Ukraine before the Oscars.

Sean Penn won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his turn as a military zealot in Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically charged film “One Battle After Another.”

But he skipped the proceedings on Sunday and headed to Europe, where his plan as of late last week was to visit Ukraine, according to two people who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

The people did not specify what he would be doing there or where precisely within the country he would be going. There remained some possibility that although Penn had left the United States by the time of the telecast, his itinerary might have changed. A representative for Penn declined to comment.

This was the sixth Oscar nomination and third win for Penn, 65, who was a favorite to take home the honor. The other contenders for best supporting actor were Stellan Skarsgard for his self-involved father in “Sentimental Value”; Jacob Elordi for his depiction of the doctor’s monstrous creation in “Frankenstein”; Delroy Lindo as a vampire-fighting blues musician in “Sinners”; and Benicio Del Toro for his portrayal of a karate instructor and revolutionary ally in “One Battle After Another.”

During the ceremony, the presenter for the supporting actor category, Kieran Culkin, said, “Sean Penn couldn’t be here this evening, or didn’t want to, so I’ll be accepting the award on his behalf.”

Penn’s performance garnered a BAFTA and an Actor’s Award from the Screen Actors Guild. But he skipped both of those ceremonies. With his win on Sunday, Penn joins a small club of actors who have won three Oscars. They include Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson and Ingrid Bergman.

Penn has spent significant time in Ukraine since 2022, when he filmed a documentary, “Superpower,” about Russia’s invasion of the country.

[From The NY Times]

It’s actually a little bit crazy that Penn swept the major awards except for the Golden Globes, which was the only show he turned up for. Do you think that after he lost at the Globes, he was just like “f–k it” and decided to skip everything else? He barely campaigned for the Oscar as well, although he did a few things – a W Magazine cover, a Variety actors-on-actors thing (with Julia Roberts), an appearance at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. He went to two OBAA premieres and that was it. So… he did play the game a little bit, but nowhere near the level of other nominees. Oscar voters are really crazy, that’s all I’ll say. As for Penn heading to Ukraine… I will give him the benefit of the doubt, actually. I think he probably hoped he wouldn’t win and he didn’t want to ruin everyone else’s night.

Yesterday, Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy posted a photo with Penn:

Say what you will about him but when it comes to humanitarian efforts he definitely walks the walk, always has. I have no doubt that if given the choice he would absolutely choose to go to a war-torn country over yet another awards ceremony, so no surprise there on that one.

  2. Thinking says:

I was stunned to realize he has 3 Oscars now.

Was his latest performance that good?

    • smcollins says:

It was. I was also rooting for either Delroy or Stellan to win, but at the same time his performance was outstanding so it’s not like he was undeserving of the win. It was a very tight category with no clear winner, that’s for sure.

He was excellent in OBAA. I was hoping Stellan Skarsgård would win (I love him and he’s so good in everything), but Penn’s performance was certainly award-worthy.

Kudos to him on his continued humanitarian work as well — he really does a lot of good.

      it was

  3. Jenny says:

Thank you. I know he isn’t well regarded here but Penn has always been a stand-up-guy politically. It’s kinda tough to fault him for his unfailing support of the Ukrainian cause.

    • Kitten says:

Definitely credit where credit is due for sure.

And this is not a knock on Penn at all but what a sad state of affairs when actors have to do the diplomacy and relationship-building that the Trump administration refuses to.

  4. Inge says:

Good for him He’s long been an activist.

Btw he was amazing in OBAA but so was Benicio & so was Delroy in Sinners

  5. BayTampaBay says:

I personally believe that Sean Penn did not care whether he won a third Oscar or not and he certainly had no desire to campaign for a third Oscar.

I think Sean Penn has a reached a point in his life where he feels his acting work can stand for itself and chooses to spend his excess time plus energy on political and social activism.

Regardless of what one thinks of him, he gave a first class performance for One Battle After Another, he received the Oscar because he got the most votes from the Academy members, he does not seem to be short of acting roles being offered to him and really does not care what the public thinks about him.

I have no desire to take tea, play bridge or chat in the grocery line with this guy who seems like a heavy piece of work. If his absence at the at the 98th Academy awards cost him a protentional 4th acting Oscar, then so be it. I doubt Sean Penn would give a Rats A$$ one way or another because he will definitely again appear in some film in the next two years.

  6. Thinking says:

I don’t think he cares whether he won or not, and I don’t think he cares what people think of him, AND I do think he can act at a certain level of excellence, but, given his personal history, I get why people would cheer for anyone else haha. I’m holding two opinions simultaneously haha.

  7. ChillinginDC says:

I mean he’s still a trash partner based on being legit ghosted by exes. But sure…Ukraine.

  8. Normades says:

I thought Kieran’s line about couldn’t or didn’t want to be here was kinda hysterical

    • Kat says:

I thought this comment made Kieran look like an a$$! Traveling to Ukraine and meeting with Zelenskyy was more important to Penn than being in a room with dressed up actors and a self congratulatory ceremony that pass out awards judged by an extremely out of touch group. While his personal life may be problematic, his humanitarian efforts are not— as told to me by my father after meeting Penn several times during his Doctors Without Borders trips.
