It’s been a little over four years since Spider-Man: No Way Home came out. If you need a refresher, that’s the one that explored the multiverse and featured Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as alternate universe Spider-Men. It ended with Dr. Strange erasing Peter Parker from everyone’s memories. (Not Spider-Man, but just Peter.) It’s also the last time we’ve seen Tom Holland’s Spidey on screen.
The wait is almost over. The MCU’s fourth and potentially final Tom Holland-as-Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, comes out on July 31. Its first trailer, which you can watch below, dropped on Wednesday. Set four years after the events of No Way Home, the trailer shows a lonely Peter who has to fight his way back to health when he begins experiencing sudden mutations.
The trailer, released by Sony on Wednesday, shows the superhero enlisting Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher as Peter Parker attempts to stitch his life back together after the events of multi-verse mash-up No Way Home. Parker is also enduring mysterious physical challenges due to hitting a crux point in the “spider life cycle.”
Holland’s real-life partner Zendaya reprises her role as MJ, though the Euphoria star is expected to have a smaller role than in the previous films.
Brand New Day also serves as a prequel to the hugely anticipated Avengers: Doomsday coming in December. The MCU Phase Six title is Holland’s final contracted stand-alone Spider-Man film and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who also helmed Marvel‘s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The official description: “Following Dr. Stephen Strange’s spell at the end of the film Spider-Man: No Way Home, the world has forgotten that Peter Parker exists. Four years later, Parker anonymously protects New York City as the hero Spider-Man. While investigating a series of crimes, he uncovers a larger mystery and faces the consequences of his past.”
The film co-stars Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Liza Colon-Zayas , Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo and Micahel Mando, among others.
I think the trailer looks good! Peter looks so angsty, and I hate that for him. I was worried that it would be dark and emo, but MJ’s ”A friendly neighbor…” quip at the end gave me hope that we’re still getting some of that trademark Spider-Man humor. As for the rest of it, there was so much in there. Was that organic webbing?! We get to see Bruce Banner and the Punisher! It also looks like Spidey tangles with a few big bads in this movie. I spotted the Hand and Scorpion, but there was also a tease of a masked character. The most prevalent online theory is that it’s Sadie Sink’s character. Her role hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the main theory is that she’s playing Jean Gray aka Phoenix. Since this is considered a lead-in to Avengers: Doomsday, it would make sense that she’d serve as an X-Men tie-in. I just hope that it’s a good movie. As much as I loved seeing the heroes and villains of Spidey franchises past in NWH, there was a lot there. I just hope Brand New Day has a more straightforward plot.
Oh, and in honor of the trailer’s release, Tom Holland did a lighting ceremony at the Empire State Building, which was lit up in red and blue. As a native New Yorker, I love that they’re playing into the New York City theme. It made me smile.
Here’s the trailer:

I love Tom Holland, but even he isn’t enough to get me through a standalone Spider-Man movie (and I tried). I wish I could understand why people love Spidey, but I’ve never gotten it. Love him in the Marvel movies, though.
Tom is my favourite Spider Man. I can’t wait.
Love jon bernthal, and can’t wait to see this “family friendly” take on the punisher!
Spider-Man: NWH is by far my favorite Spider-Man movie, it was really clever how they brought in the “other” Spider-Men and past villains without it being straight up fan service, it actually served the story and gave it a lot of depth. Aunt May’s death also had me in tears, very emotional (I’m not spoiling anything here since in the new trailer he’s shown visiting her grave). I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this final (?) chapter.
I’m so looking forward to this!
My coworker and I were geeking out about this before work today lol
