Savannah Guthrie to host a Wordle game show on NBC

Savannah Guthrie and Jimmy Fallon on The Today Show
I need a show of hands: Who still plays Wordle every day? I do! (So does Pope Leo.) My morning ritual is Wordle, Connections, and then Strands. I’ve been doing this routine for so long now that I can’t even do them out of order. I also have a daily group chat with my mom and sisters where we compare our Wordle scores.

If, like me, you still enjoy a good game of Wordle, then I have some great news for you. Savannah Guthrie is hosting a new Wordle game show on NBC. It’s been in development for two and a half years and they’ve already shot a pilot that got picked up in February. The Wordle game show is being produced by Jimmy Fallon’s production company. Jimmy, who is a big Wordler, appeared on Today on Monday to do a co-announcement with Savannah. I’ll embed the video of their announcement below, but here’s some more information from People:

On Monday, May 11, the Today co-anchor, 54, announced her exciting role during the 8:00 hour of the morning news broadcast. She was joined by Jimmy Fallon (an executive producer on the upcoming show), to reveal a new Wordle game show is coming to NBC.

“This is very exciting, I have a big announcement to make,” The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon host began. “We’ve been developing Wordle as a game show for the past two-and-a-half years with The New York Times, and it’s official — we are making Wordle Game Show with our host, Savannah Guthrie!”

“We’ve been holding this secret between us for a long time now,” Guthrie said. “And we’re going to make Wordle a game show.”

Fallon gushed over Guthrie as host: “I’m so happy it’s you. We were looking, we’re like, ‘Who’s the perfect host of this?’ We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it, and we did the pilot, and you are amazing, by the way.”

Guthrie joked, “I thought you picked me because I have a skirt that looks like a Wordle.”

She teased that the show will be “super fast-paced and fun” and a “great family game.” Adding, “I love a game and a show that you can watch with kids and you feel like they’re learning some things.”

When she asked Fallon for any hosting tips, he said she was “fantastic,” adding that the whole crew agreed that they couldn’t “do the show without” her.

Guthrie paused to thank everyone behind the show. “We’ve been working on this for a really long time, and actually we just found out in February that we got picked up and we were supposed to shoot in March. And I just want to say a quick thank you to NBC and to Jimmy and his production company and the The New York Times and the studio and Universal because when everything happened with me and my family, they just stopped everything and said ‘We’ll wait for you.’ And Hollywood is a really tough business, and I didn’t expect that, and I just want to say thank you, it means so much to me.”

“We can’t do it without you,” Fallon told her.

“It kind of feels strange to do everything right now, but this is something that’s full of joy,” Guthrie said.

Today co-anchor Craig Melvin teased Fallon, “Jimmy, again, you can’t do it without her — neither can we. So you can borrow her for a little while, but make sure you return her.”

I don’t know that we need a Wordle game show, but I will definitely check it out and probably have a blast playing along at home in the same way that I do while watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and The Weakest Link. According to the show’s casting website, they are filming in Europe for approximately 12 days this summer, beginning on July 20. Surprisingly, it will be a team competition, with each team being composed of three people. I’m so curious about what its fast-paced format will be. Is there a speed round? Are they going to stick to five-letter words? Will one of the rounds be done Quordle-style?

Anyway, I love that Savannah wore a Wordle-inspired skirt to do the announcement. I also really enjoyed when the other Today cohosts came out and they all discussed their starter words. (I’m an ADIEU girlie.) It was also a sweet moment when Savannah thanked Jimmy and NBC for moving production back in order to accommodate what was going on with her mom. Sure, the optics would have looked bad if they’d gone with another host in the middle of her family crisis, but we all know that at the end of the day, if it’s between decency and dollar, big corporations are going to choose the dollar. I do think that for all of Jimmy’s flaws, he is probably the one who went to bat for pushing production back.

Speaking of, Savannah made a really lovely, emotional post for her mother in honor of Mother’s Day in the USA on Sunday. It was a reel with a bunch of clips of Nancy Guthrie, including one that looked like a video message where she’s telling Savannah, ”I miss you!” Ugh, my heart still breaks for the Guthrie family. I hope they get answers soon.
