I started watching Widow’s Bay on AppleTV+ apropos of nothing, really. I think I watched a preview and thought I would give it a chance, so I went into without really knowing much. I found the first few episodes unsettling, funny and scary. Then CB told me that she’s watching it too, so I decided to stick with it (I enjoy it when we’re watching the same show). All of which to say, Widow’s Bay is sort of an undercover obsession now. It’s a weird show to explain or hype, because tonally, the whole thing is on a knife’s edge. Like, there are some parts which are so legitimately scary, I had to fast-forward a little bit. But then it’s also laugh-out-loud funny.
This week, AppleTV+ released two amazing episodes. There will apparently be three more episodes, and I cannot wait to see how they wrap this up yet (hopefully) leave room for additional seasons. Which is what I wanted to write about – Widow’s Bay has become the “cool new show” in recent weeks, and yet AppleTV hasn’t done much to hype it or build on it’s momentum. They haven’t even announced a second season, and there’s truly no way that they can wrap up these storylines in the remaining episodes. Hopefully, they’ll announce plans for a second season soon, around the finale? One can only hope.
Incidentally, I just learned that Matthew Rhys is also the executive producer on the show, which is amazing. He’s giving such a GREAT performance too – part slapstick comedy, and partly the lead in a truly unsettling horror. The episode where he’s drugged is such an exquisite performance. Kate O’Flynn also steals every scene she’s in, and Stephen Root is great at playing grumpy old men. Betty Gilpin was a special guest star in the sixth episode (directed by Ti West) and she knocked it out of the park!!

The way you are raving about this show is the way I rave about “The Americans” where Matthew Rhys had the lead with his wife Keri Russell. His acting is sublime. I also really liked him as Perry Mason so I’ll watch this!
I am really enjoying Widow’s Bay. I started watching for Matthew Rhys because i love him but this show is so funny, so clever and such a thoughtful send up of horror(so many incredible horror references). Bless the weirdos who made it. I’ve literally recommended it to like 10 people.
Love Widow’s Bay! Sometimes it scares me so much I can’t breathe. Other times it is hilarious. I highly recommend.
Pedro Pascakl was raving about it in his puppy interview so I may have to have a watch
Been watching since it started and it’s so hard to describe this show! The Jaws episode (IYKYK) was great!
IKBHTTA (I know bit I had to think about it).
I was bored and complaining about having nothing to watch. I clicked and I am HOOKED!! This show give you laughs and then scare you straight. LOVE IT!
I am a huge fan of THE MAIN CHARACTER, RHYS.
I hope there is a season 2.
I am fully OBSESSED with Widow’s Bay, to the point that I’ve watched each episode 3 times so I can scour them for clues. I love a good puzzle box (mystery box?) show, and this one is exemplary. The acting! The writing! The directing! The sets! The fine balance of horror, spookiness, pathos, and humor! And the homages! I just love it all, and I want many more seasons. I’m so delighted that Apple TV is releasing banger after banger!
LOVE this show! My new favourite.
It’s the absolute perfect blend of legitimately scary horror and truly funny comedy. I wish I had the willpower to save up the rest of the episodes and binge them, but there’s no way I can make that happen.
Not yet… not yet…. RUN!!
Love this show so much. Hoping for a season two as well.
I’ll watch Matthew Rhys reading the OG phone book, to me he is that brilliant, but omg yes, the show is also great and everyone in it is great. Every element works, there is serious talent at all levels of how this show was put together. That it’s a sleeper hit – even better.
I’ve watched him in Welsh language ads and TV shows just so I can 😍😍😍 him. I obviously have no idea what he is saying, but I am a sucker for a sexy voice / accent.
