Oscar de la Renta is still bitching about Michelle Obama’s fashion choices

Designer Oscar de la Renta arrives with talk show host Oprah Winfrey at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit in New York

Last April, Oscar de la Renta made some comments about Michelle Obama that many (including me) found very bitchy and snotty. Speaking to WWD, de la Renta basically claimed that it the First Lady’s duty to wear established America designers and established fashion houses because “American fashion right now is struggling.” He said that wearing young, unknown designers (at the time) like Jason Wu was not “the right message at this particular point….I don’t object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it’s wrong to go in one direction only.” He also complained about what Michelle wore to meet Queen Elizabeth, saying “You don’t…go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater.’”

So it got intense. And de la Renta got criticized for being so critical of Michelle, and many thought de la Renta was just mad because he had dressed several First Ladies for major events and Michelle had chosen not to wear his stuff for anything, and was instead going with new designers with a fresher, less stuffy approach. He had to backtrack a little, and he later said “I don’t object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it’s wrong to go in one direction only.” Well guess what? He’s still miffed.

First ladies are “an American phenomenon,” Oscar de Renta told our colleague Robin Givhan. No other country, he said, obsesses about the spouse of its leader or imbues her with such profound meaning. The only reason the French are particularly interested in Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is because she was a model and girlfriend to rock stars, not because they consider her a symbol of their country.

“This country has always been very different about that,” he said. “And it’s a learning process. He was elected president. She wasn’t. But at the same time, there’s an expectation about her that perhaps she was not even ready for.”

So far the only de la Renta that the current first lady has worn has been Moises de la Renta, the designer’s son. That’s in keeping with her tradition of wearing clothes by less-established designers. And that, of course, makes a father proud. But still …

“I’d love to dress Mrs. Obama,” he said.

The designer said he was struck by her style at the Governors Ball in 2009 when she wore a sparkling pewter Peter Soronen gown and Tom Binns necklace. “She looked so fantastic,” he says.

Then he laughs. Kinda sorta. “I was dying of jealousy.”

[From The Washington Post]

I think he still sounds bitchy. Am I being too sensitive this morning? Perhaps. But seriously, “It’s a learning process. He was elected president. She wasn’t. But at the same time, there’s an expectation about her that perhaps she was not even ready for.” Bitch, right? It sounds like de la Renta thinks that every First Lady should wear his clothes because that’s just what is expected of them. If they don’t wear his clothes, they “weren’t ready” for the position. Why doesn’t it occur to him that Michelle Obama is just a young First Lady who wants to celebrate new, young designers as well as affordable ready-to-wear?

what a douche canoe. it’s very clear he’s just bitter that she’s not wearing his stuff. something tells me when he says american fashion is struggling i doubt that de la renta is the one struggling

  2. mich says:

does anyone recognize the cardigan she’s wearing in the bottom picture? i’d love to know where she got it from.

  3. Attagirl says:

I think FLOTUS is sitting back having a good old giggle about Oscar’s little tantrum. She’s above all that fashion cattiness and is making her own mark on the world, both with her work on childhood obesity and her look, which is distinctive, easy and fun. I love her!

  4. Shannon says:

Somebody is just feeling all sour grapes because Michelle Obama isn’t an elitist when it comes to fashion.

  5. snowball says:

I totally adore about 90% of what she wears. I love that she picks whoever she wants based on whatever she wants, whatever the style is that she wants to go for and to hell with people like that, yes, jealous bitch La Renta is whining about.

But. She sort of has a tendency to wear things once in a while that don’t flatter her. I don’t mean that they aren’t great in color or pattern or spirit or designer. They just don’t hit her right in certain areas of her body. She wears belts that make her hips look wide or dresses that make her look pregnant.

She’s got a rocking bod, but apart from wearing some majorly hot dresses that show off her arms (and I adore the cardigans she picks) I’m not loving a lot of her casual dresses sometimes. She picks awesome formal gowns, I love all of them so far, it’s just once in a while, I see her at some random event and I’m like, who picked that one out for you? Why would they make you look so hippy when you’re not?

That last picture of her is gorgeous, a perfect example of her style, great pants, a lovely top and one of her awesome cardigans. Nice, simple and just HER. Easy, comfortable, no fuss, nothing pretentious and stupidly “designer” but totally recognizable

  6. Bella Mosley says:

I think she looks great and should wear what she wants. Is there anything anyone can do anymore without being criticized? In this time when the economy is a disaster, earthquakes, floods, etc are killing thousands, children are going to be hungry, etc should what designer a woman decides to wear be something to bitch about? Oscar de la Renta – waaaaaa!!!!!

  7. Sigh. says:

Love or hate her husband, THIS IS JUST DUMB! Who says she’d wear HIS clothes anyway?

A-hem: If you are a design HOUSE (de la Renta, Givenchy, Gucci, Marchesa, hell, Baby Phat), you already have millions of dollars at your disposal. Whether it’s $250mil instead of $350mil this year because of the economy is not the issue. You still are an established designer. Print ads. Cover shoots. Layouts. Awards season. Premieres. Fund raisers. All at your disposal.

If you are an up-and-comer, you are still struggling to establish a following/brand loyalty. Your profit is very much dependent on the whim of the rich, and word-of-mouth. Free publicity is a boost.

She’s trying to set an example to her cash-strapped country, not keep a bunch of multi-millionaires dipped in gold.

And I’m not even the biggest fan of how she dresses…

  8. meme says:

sorry, but you DON’T go to Buckingham Palace in a J.Crew sweater. You just DON’T. MO either looks good or like crap, never in between.

  9. MeMyself says:

What is wrong with wearing a J Crew sweater to Buckingham Palace?
    I did.

  10. lucy2 says:

He needs to just SHUT IT. He’s jealous, plain and simple, and probably all bent out of shape because she didn’t chose him like Laura and Hillary did. After his whining, I kind of hope she never does!

I haven’t loved everything she’s worn, but over all I really like her style. It’s young, more casual, and more affordable, but always appropriate, and I think she looks great.
I’ve loved all the formal gowns she’s chosen, and think it’s great that they have been from up and coming American designers. It’s hilarious that he’s trying to use struggling designers to justify wanting her to wear him – he’s worth over $100 million and has been hugely successful for a very long time. Movie stars and other high profile people wear his stuff all the time. If the concern is struggling American designers, then the thing to do would be support those WITHOUT a huge dynasty…exactly what Michelle has done.

  11. Sumodo1 says:

Rosalyn Carter raided her friends’ closets for formal wear and didn’t wear designer duds at all.

Take that and stick it, Oscar (ruffles- up-the-wazoo) de la Renta Yenta.

  12. Praise St. Angie! says:

my only advice for her, style wise, is to STAND UP STRAIGHT!

I know, I know…that’s not “style” advice, but I think it might improve how people SEE her style?

other than that, I like how she dresses. she’s had some misses, like everybody does, but I think her overall style suits her well.

  13. marie says:

spanish saying: aunque la mona se vista de seda mona se queda.. Michelle is so unatractive that no matter what she wears she still looks ugly. she is the worst dressed first lady in history!!!

  14. Green Is Good says:

I adore the cardigan MO is wearing in the last pic.

  15. Green Is Good says:

Additional: I’d love to see MO get a short, sassy hairdo like Halle Berry. She’s got great bone structure.

  16. kelbear says:

To me she dresses like a plain jane. Nothing special but not poorly.

  17. Spring says:

Sounds like Oscar’s not the only bitter one here. I think Marie #13 wants to snuggle up with him and have a jealous weep.

  18. merry says:

I think what he said about the importance that Americans attribute to their First Lady is true: here in Italy, for instance, most people don’t even know the name of Mr Berlusconi’s wife, and she was a movie actress.
Secondly, if I may, I think you should consider the possiblity that Mrs Obama is not as well dressed as she could be. Most of the designs she wore in the past did nothing good for her figure and she just doesn’t seem capable of wearing them approprately. Now, I know most of you will now jump off their seats indignant and outraged BUT: Mrs Obama does not have a good posture. She does not walk gracefully nor elegantly. That is what really confuses everybody around here: that she cannot be bothered with learning how to wear a dress, stand and walk appropriately.

  19. meme says:

@MeMyself, yes but you didn’t MEET The Queen LOL

  20. lin234 says:

I think what she’s wearing is tasteful considering her husband was sworn in during a recession. By not wearing a $10,000 + dresses, it makes her seem more accessible which is great when she’s trying to connect with millions of people over issues like fighting childhood obesity and other widespread issues.

Another bonus is that she’s helping out lesser known designers.

  21. Spring says:

I like Michelle Obama’s style on the whole, although I think there have been a few “misses” (throwing that black cardigan over the dress on election night was the first major mistake I saw).

She’s a striking woman with a real presence, and I think she’s doing a great thing by supporting up-and-coming designers and dressing to suit her casual style where possible.

I do wish she’d put her shoulders back though. It would make the world of difference.

  22. Feebee says:

It hurts (him) that she doesn’t need Oscar de la Renta in her fashion arsenal. He’s acting out. I don’t think she’s losing any sleep over it.

  23. Leticia says:

Do you all remember the expression on the Queen of England’s face when Mrs. Obama touched her? The Queen looked appalled. Big breech of protocol, but very enjoyable to see Queen Elizabeth’s expression. Aside from touching her gloved hand, I doubt that anyone had touched her in years…

  24. Bee says:

@Marie, Scott Baio is that you?

  25. Cheyenne says:

@Marie: MO is “unattractive” and “ugly”? What’s the matter, is she too black for you?

  26. MeMyself says:

Meme, If her cardy didn’t have a J Crew label on it and had an upscale label instead, would it really matter?
The Queen is VERY cost conscience, is always looking for ways to pinch pennies and I think she would have been impressed, actually..

  27. canadianchick says:

I like your american FLOTUS, the prime minister’s wife is so invisble here I have no idea what her fashion sense is. Oscar, whining will not get you far with clients, meow.

  28. Miranda Ann says:

Poor Oscar! Back when Clinton had his first inauguration, Hillary wore a nice dress (in my opinion) but Oscar pitched a fit saying the same things he is saying now about Michelle. For the second inauguration, Hillary wore de la Renta!! I guess Oscar is trying to get that same reaction out of Michelle and is totally pissed that she isn’t listening/doesn’t give a sh!t!!! Really, I crack up everytime Oscar says anything about Michelle. The man is hilarious. Nothing like a pissy fashion designer!!!

P.S.: Michelle’s posture sometimes bothers me but she is 5’11” and I think she kind of hunches over because of that. She shouldn’t but she does. Some girls are uncomfortable with their height.

  29. Joan says:

Quite frankly, it’s nice to see a more modernised First Lady who isn’t wearing business suit-looking outfits all the time. Michelle is wearing stuff that I would wear. She is very down-to-earth and approachable. Clothes aren’t mean to fit us to a “T”, regardless of whether or not you are in the public eye.
She is lovely … and is several tiers above our FL Carla Bruni.

  30. Raven says:

I don’t think she’s that attractive either, but first ladies are not there for a beauty contest. They are there to support the President and help the country. She’s doing some wonderful projects with the garden and childhood obesity.

  31. Lilias says:

I agree with Miranda Ann. Michelle Obama is really tall for a woman and I have a feeling that she’s self-conscious about it like a lot of tall women are and hunches because of that. Not saying she shouldn’t just throw her shoulders back and stand up straight (slouching bothers me to no end) but I understand when tall women slouch due to being uncomfortable with their height.

Oscar De La Renta is being a whiny little girl about this. Shut up. She’s supporting new designers and affordable clothing lines. How is that a bad thing?

  32. Abby says:

“First ladies are ‘an American phenomenon,’ Oscar de Renta told our colleague Robin Givhan. No other country, he said, obsesses about the spouse of its leader or imbues her with such profound meaning. The only reason the French are particularly interested in Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is because she was a model and girlfriend to rock stars, not because they consider her a symbol of their country.”

I’m pretty sure many people in the world are obsessed with the British royalty….

  33. Ron says:

If MO kept showing up in 5,000.00 suits the people would say she’s elitist and out of touch. She comes froma real background, not from high society. I personally love her take on things, I don’t love everything she wears, but I appreciate her overall style. I also love that she wears recognizable things more than once.

  34. Anastasia says:

Oscar needs to STFU. Who cares what he thinks? He’s PAST IT. He’s angry that the only women wearing his stuff are all older than 80. But he needs to deal with it. Life goes on.

As for what Michelle Obama wears, I didn’t even know there were that many people who gave a rat’s ass.

  35. Trey says:

Somebody needs a WHAAAAMBULANCE called to remove the sand out of his hou-ha area.

Yeah, some of her fashion hasn’t been awesome, her posture isn’t great, but I’d wear some of the stuff she’s picked out (and her style is pretty far from mine).

The biggest thing to me about all this (even including the mustard dress and coat which I thought was BLEH) is that I can really RESPECT somebody who helps others who are not as fortunate. I don’t give a fug how she dresses as long as she’s not nekkid, but she gets major points for helping others when she certainly didn’t have to.
Let’s talk about her veggie garden with kid helpers instead! I love that shiz!

  36. Eileen Yover says:

I agree with MeMyself, if that cardy had a Tory Burch label and cost $1k some would approve and some would freak out saying that with our debt and economic crisis she shouldn’t be spending that kind of money on clothes. I just got an email that the oil spill in NO is Obama’s fault! Regoshdarndiculous! If you don’t like them, nothing they do or wear will satisfy.

  37. Macheath says:

    @Marie
Worst dressed first lady in history? Why, Marie, I didn’t realise you were immortal. What a stupid thing to say. If you don’t like her style fine but you just sound bitter with that exaggerated statement. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was better looking than you.

  38. simplicity says:

The fashion grip on first lady’s has come to an end. Say goodbye Oscar, it’s no longer your prize.

I enjoy most of MO’s clothing choices. She holds to what looks both good on her and her own stylistic preferences.

  39. original kate says:

oscar needs to take a valium and calm the hell down.

  40. gg says:

Oscar de la Renta, correct me if I am wrong, is French, oui? So why does he think he owns the American first lady’s fashion choices?

Fashion never fails to amaze me. It takes itself WAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaay too seriously.

Who CARES, especially lately, with real issues going on in the world, with outrageously expensive, superficial garbage like this?

Things have changed, Mr. Mayer-Wiener. Go earn your millions somewhere else or at least do a benefit to help save people in need or the environment, both of which are in dire need at the moment.

  41. Wholesome1 says:

MO dresses well and appropriately for every occasion. I like her style and sass.

  42. Jeri says:

Gee, should she apologize for not pleasing all the people all the time. I don’t think she claims to be perfect and the things she does are a lot more important then her fashion choices. She could put fashion first & relegate everything else as not as important. That would probably please all the fashionistas.

  43. I Choose Me says:

@Leticia. The Queen did not look “appalled” in fact she touched her first. There are pics to prove it. Michelle briefly reciprocated.

  44. bosc says:

Oscar is a whiny crybaby (and has thrown away any dignity he might ever have had with his rants). But Michelle definitely looks TOO casual a lot of the time, like a suburban soccer mom. She should step it up a little and go beyond J.Crew.

And that cardi-and-belt look has got to go, it does not flatter her at all.

  45. Rosanna says:

Any person with some eye for fashion will agree that her fashion choices are just OFF. Liking her (and her husband) from a political perspective is one thing, calling her “classy” despite the evidence and just because she belongs to your same political side is narrow-minded. OdR is right. Big prints and splashy colors are something that Jackie O or Grace Kelly would have NEVER done. Because THEY had class.

  46. Julie says:

gg: Oscar de la Renta is a native of the Dominican Republic.

  47. Beth says:

It seems like people have a problem with J Crew not cardigans. If it was a designer label a doubt anybody would care. I like the way Michelle dresses. It may be safe but she usually looks good. I love the blue, black, grey dress she’s wearing but hate the placement of the belt.

  48. e-non says:

de la renta is dominican/puerto rican. but he counts on people being easily fooled.

  49. Lil says:

    I like her style.

  50. Crash2GO2 says:

@Rosanna: Oh my. An ‘eye for fashion’ you say? Jackie O and Grace Kelly were both from completely different time periods, and completely different women, both physically and personality wise. Michelle Obama can wear bold prints because she is tall, she has strong features, and strong coloring. None of which you can say for Jackie O or Grace Kelly, who I am certain, relied on high fashion advisors (like Whiney Heiny here) for their clothing choices.

  51. kh says:

she dresses like a real working woman, albeit with more disposable income than most and a bit more style. i think she looks great, this is the first time i cared for a first lady’s looks as much as those of jackie o. she’s fab and that’s that.

and jackie o. never did prints? uhm leopard anyone? thanks to her trendsetting they almost went extinct.

  52. ViktoryGin says:

    @ Trey…here, here

This debate is f*cking antiquated. Not to bring in feminist rhetoric here, but the man gets to run the country and we are still talking about what his wife wears? Geez…like it’s her duty to be the fashion paragon for the national when there are so many bigger things at hand. When will be cease to concern ourselves with such nonsense? They are not 18th century European royalty. It’s the 21st century. Keep the fashion commentary to the people in arts and entertainment, where it belongs.

  53. Sincerity says:

Oscar De La Renta needs to get a grip! Mrs. Obama is not trying to fit into the same stereotypical mold of former first ladies. Her style is much more “laid back” and “down-to-earth” compared to former first ladies. Mrs. Obama was actually a “working mother” — not a homemaker who depended primarily upon her her husband to take care of her. In many respects, she represents a much more modern version of the typical American wife, mother and executive. She has firmly established “working class” roots and by projecting a somewhat accessible image, the average American can really relate to her. The Obama Presidency is not about “glitz and glamour”. It’s more about common sense practicality and grappling with reality. Perhaps it time for Mr. De La Renta to leave his elitist ivory tower and develop a line of clothing that’s more closely akin to how the average American woman dresses and lives. Even the wealthy have taken a considerable economic hit and they may also appreciate clothing that’s much more affordable.

  55. Dana M says:

It’s quite obvious that MO’s lacks fashion sense.
But you can tell she is trying hard. Hopefully she’ll hire a good stylist soon. She needs to be dressing with a bit more class, in my opinion. some of those outfits she wears are hidious. You can accomplish a classic look in many ways… Ya don’t have to wear suits to do so. she should want to look back at pictures of herself 20 years from now and think to herself “wow, I sure do look classic and timeless, not ” I look like a jig saw puzzle in this multicolored patterned dress or omg, I look like a hot air balloon in that outfit ( primary colors, cut and all)”.

  56. 1 qt of 1 % says:

CRASH2G02 is right ROSANNA: Because Jackie O or Grace K (and she wasn’t a First Lady!)didn’t wear something in the 1950’s and 1960’s doesn’t mean it’s never acceptable. Good grief that was 60 years ago! Fashion has changed and big prints don’t mean class or the lack of it

If MO had worn an expensive dress people would be bitching she was flaunting their money in a time of economic upheaval. She can not please everyone and if she is a smart woman she will wear what pleases her. And by helping young designers, instead of those that are already super wealthy, she is helping the economy!

Democrats represent the working class and republicans the elite/upper class and have often dressed as such. Obama is not poor but does not have near the money the Bush, Reagans etc have, so to me, on both counts & because of the ‘recession’ she is dressing appropriately. But that is just my opinion and therefore it is not right or wrong – just a matter of taste/values/opinion.

  57. Lady Lurker says:

    @ Marie #13

    You said it!

She looks like a man! And like she dresses in the dark.

  58. Jillian says:

I don’t know why people are saying she’s unnatractive! She’s very pretty. Also I think she’s one of the few people who look good in those trendy big prints. I like the way she dresses and I like that she’s championing eating healthy. 🙂

  59. Jocelina says:

I swear, there are like, five people on here who come out swinging every time they see an opportunity to say nasty things about famous women. Marie and company, you are the unattractive ones. Doesn’t matter who it is — if they see an opportunity to call a woman ugly or low-class, they’re all over it.

I agree with Trey — someone should call Oscar de la Renta a whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaambulance posthaste. Maybe Marie and her pals can join him over at Butthurt General.

  60. itzbilebitch says:

hes a bitch but she cnt dress for s***

  61. onyx says:

I for one think it’s great and sets a great example that she is not blowing a fortune on clothes and keeps it simple.

  62. Aspen says:

I have never understood the intensity of focus on Mrs. Obama’s clothing. She gets it right way more often than she makes a fashion error…and she’s a great First Lady. I mean, hell, I haven’t agreed with a single policy decision coming out of this administration, but I love me an involved and passionate First Lady. She’s beautiful, smart, accomplished, and fit. She makes even that unfortunate blood clot looking monstrosity from election night look awesome…so I wish people would lay off the negativity about her clothes.

I will never forget how much I loved that green ensemble she wore at the inauguration. She looked like a queen in that outfit. I mean…compared to some of the dowdy disasters we’ve become accustomed to seeing from The White House, people ought to be grateful for Michelle.

  63. FIONA says:

    I’m not going to lie…
    She wears the UGLIEST clothes.
Designer or not…those outfits are terrible.

  64. Ben says:

    @Leticia

That was a bit rude. I mean, I understand that people all over the world are rude (or just have opinions about) heads of state or politicians or monarchs the world over.

But as a previous commenter has said, Michelle Obama (whose style has been appropriate and pretty, not that I am terribly interested) who reciprocated a casual touch of the hand, has NO beef with the Queen of England, and considering quite a few Brits read this blog, it could be polite to tone down the criticism.

:s I’m not quite sure how to express this… I mean… I *have* criticised US Presidents. But the English Queen is like a symbol – she doesn’t influence government. Bitching her out is both ineffectual and a tad offensive to British people. She’s as much a part of national pride to us as the States’ famous structures are to you. It’s not like I’d randomly insult the Pentagon for having a displeasing shape. That’s just the way shit is.

  65. Kim says:

PLEASE Oscar help her! She dresses soooo bad! Its embarrassing for America! She looks like a man put into womens clothes. She has zero fashion sense and for everyone that says well she is smart etc and doesnt care about fashion – oh plleeaaasseee! She totally cares about what she wears – if she didnt she wouldnt try so hard (overly hard with bad results) on all her outfits. She isnt wearing the same clothes as when her husband was a senator or running for pres. so dont even go the “Oh she is better than her wardrobe route” because Michelles style has changed (to bad not for the good).

  66. Ashley says:

    Here Here @ Kim

Oddly enough all I wear is J.Crew, but personally I think MO’s style is HIDEOUS. She doesn’t look like a First Lady, she looks like a school teacher living off an income of $30,000 who looks for clothes at Penny’s.

Nothing wrong with that, but it’s not cool when you’re first Lady.

And please if she was really recession aware she wouldn’t be wearing $200 skirts and $100 sweaters. I shop there, I know how much it costs and I doubt like me, a student on a budget, she spends a lot of time in their clearance section waiting for their 20%-30% off sales.

I will say the only time I’ve ever liked her look was that dress she wore with the pearl necklaces. I think that time she looked the part. Or maybe I’m just biased because my favorite First Lady has and will always be Jackie? No on will ever be the goddess that woman was.

I didn’t consider his comments bitchy, he’s a designer, they’re all bitchy, but all this hate for his antiquated opinion? I agree that First Ladies should wear American designers and he does BEAUTIFUL classic Americana (saying he’s a bad designer is unfounded). He just has a very dated view of First Ladies which is that they are Royalty so it shouldn’t matter how much their clothes cost. He doesn’t get that she’s taking her role as First Lady as more of a “down with little people (so I wear clothes they can afford)”. She doesn’t have the syle chops to pull off high fashion so maybe it’s a good thing she doesn’t go there.

  67. annie says:

I don’t like her politics at all, but I think she lookes awesome in that red dress(designer?) and she looks great in strong colors, but not in prints. If she wants to dress in J.Crew, great! So do I! Her college thesis? (which I read) Ummm, not so much.

  68. whocares says:

At the end of the day she still is THE FIRST LADY OF THE UNITED STATES. Kim, Marie, Annie et al, can eat rocks.

  69. AkhenAton says:

I am a young designer and trust me, she has no sense of style. Not sure if she would be interested in wearing my clothes but i sure as hell wont be offering. She might be a great person but style is not her forte and i think she knows that and is not bothered.
