Has Prince Andrew already forgiven Fergie?

Sarah Ferguson signs copies of her book at the BookExpo America in New York

I realize many of you don’t care about the royal scandal involving the News of the World catching Fergie in a pay-to-play scandal, but I’m finding the whole situation fascinating. As I summarized on Monday, the NOTW sent an undercover reporter into a meeting with Fergie – the reporter was acting as a “businessman” who was looking for a meeting with Prince Andrew and other members of the royal family. The NOTW got Fergie on tape discussing the pay-off: a wire transfer of about $750,000, plus $60,000 cash. Since the scandal broke over the weekend, many wondered if Fergie was still going to be welcome to events with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, The Duke of York. The Mirror is running a front-page story which paints Andrew in a very nice light, I think. Apparently, Andrew’s feelings on the whole situation are along the lines of “Whatever.” Fergie offered to move out of the London home they share (with their daughters) but Andrew wouldn’t have it. Aw… that’s kind of sweet, isn’t it?

Tearful Fergie was forgiven by ex-husband Prince Andrew yesterday for her “cash for access” scam. He sympathised as she poured out her heart in an emotional phone call.

The sobbing Duchess apologised for betraying his trust – and even offered to quit the room she has at his Windsor mansion. But Andrew told her: “Don’t be silly, you can stay as long as you like.”

A friend said: “He’s a very caring person. He thinks she was set up.”

It has been four years since their divorce was finalised, but Prince Andrew and Fergie have remained the best of pals. And yesterday the unique bond between the royal “odd couple” was evident again – as Andrew pardoned his ex-wife’s latest monumental indiscretion. He told her he forgave her after she was exposed in newspaper sting operation trying to sell an introduction to him to a bogus businessmen for £500,000.

And in an astonishing show of loyalty to the woman he has loved for 25 years, the Duke of York promised she could stay in his house “as long as you like”.

After emotional talks with the couple’s daughters Beatrice and Eugenie, he has vowed to dig Fergie out of her financial problems and help her to recover from the depths of despair. It will shock royal courtiers and annoy his parents, particularly Prince Philip, who wanted Andrew to make a clean break after their divorce in 1996. But many will welcome the move at a time when friends fear she may be “suicidal”.

Those closest to her say she has been a “quivering wreck” since the scandal broke. Fergie was taped as she accepted a $40,000 “down payment” for access to Andrew, Britain’s Special Trade envoy – even though he knew nothing about it.

Distraught Fergie, 50, had already offered to move out of Royal Lodge, the Queen Mother’s old home at Windsor, where she has lived in a rented room under the same roof as her ex-husband for nearly two years. But a friend revealed the prince has turned that offer down flat, telling her: “Don’t be so silly.”

Fergie spoke to him in a tearful phone call from her suite in the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, where she had just picked up an award for her charity work. She sobbed for several minutes, begging his forgiveness. She told him she had betrayed his trust and she would move out as soon as she returned to the UK. But the friend revealed: “Andrew told her to calm down and get a grip. He is a very caring person, a loving father and he told Sarah not to be so silly. He told her she had been set up and although she had clearly made a massive mistake, he wasn’t going to kick her out on to the streets. He knows she can’t afford anywhere – that’s why he let her stay at Royal Lodge in the first place.”

The friend continued: “The other major reason was because Bea and Eugenie like being close to their mum. Whatever else she is, Sarah has always been an excellent parent and Andrew admires her for that. His attitude is that he isn’t going to tear his family apart because of one week’s bad headlines.”

Fergie, who smiled and waved to well-wishers as she left a New York hotel yesterday, is said to be “in limbo” following the weekend’s revelations and does not know where to turn. But she can now at least rely on the support of the one man who has always stood by her, no matter what.

The pal said: “Booting Sarah out would only have made things worse. She wouldn’t be able to cope and it could have tipped her over the edge. The fact is that when say they are the world’s happiest divorced couple, they really mean it. Sometimes you cannot understand why they split up in the first place. They will always be best friends and although the set-up seems weird to many people, it works for them.”

[From The Mirror]

I actually thought the scandal around Fergie would be a lot bigger. She should thank her lucky stars that Andrew and the other royals don’t have their diamond-encrusted shivs out. If I was Andrew, I would be pissed at her – she wasn’t even selling herself, like a proper hooker. She was pimping out Andrew, her EX husband. The fact that Andrew seems to be so understanding and nice about it makes me wonder if he really understands how this scandal impacts his reputation. Still, Andrew was always my favorite of the Windsors. He seems like the most normal one.

I wonder if he was getting a cut.

i always liked andrew, too. much prefer him over charles!

  3. suz says:

Word. Whether it was done intentionally on his part or not, this also works as a great PR tactic in that if Prince Andrew doesn’t care, then the media might get over it more quickly, which will benefit everyone.

  4. LindyLou says:

Their close relationship is interesting. I’ve often wondered if there were reasons for their divorce other than what we were told. I’m quite frankly surprised at his reaction (or lack of reaction) to this “scandal”.

  5. Pont Neuf says:

Andrew doesn’t need to forgive Fergie. He only needs to ensure that this scandal goes away as quietly as possible, so as to not incite anyone to prod into his ex-greedy sow’s shady dealings – something that could irreparably damage his reputation, if it were discovered that he even had a minimum degree of knowledge about.

At a personal level, I am outraged by the way that this has been portrayed in the media. The BBC, The Guardian and even The Independent have gone to ridiculous lengths to paint that cow as a victim of NOTW. Apparently, her indecency and greed are not to blame for her predicament. Journalists who do their job, are.

This woman has no shame. She doesn’t pay rent, nor bills. She has a generous pension that amounts to more than what people with university degrees earn, has made a small fortune thanks to various endorsements and public appearances in the US and yet, here she was engaging in what amounts to a form of insider trading. They should all be ashamed of this… Unfortunately, they only seem to care about manipulating the media, to keep their public image intact.

  6. mln says:

If she really only gets 25G a year she has definitley had to find ways to support herself and more than likely this isn’t the first time… she probably knows some spicy dirt on Prince Andy also

  7. Victoria says:

I always liked him and thought he was way cooler and better looking than his two brothers. I have to admit since this scandal Im wondering if Sarah is a little BONKERS. She really embarassed herself and her kids! Im pretty sure when they got divorced the Queen set it up so that Bea and Euginia were taken care of financially. So I guess the Queen knew

  8. d says:

I think he knows she’s kind of dumb but mostly harmless, reputation-hit aside. He seems like he’s had to deal with her nutty behaviour before and this wasn’t a big surprise, like he couldn’t possibly be threatened by her because she’d f*** it up anyway. Anyhow, keeping her close is a wise idea…way to keep tabs on her and her dim bulb ideas. God, I totally want to go back to England and talk about the royals with all my relatives (who mostly hate everyone except the Queen, who, I must say, rocks…I would LOVE to meet the Queen)!

  9. Maritza says:

She is 50, really? She looks older. Prince Andrew looks good.

  10. mel says:

It was reported yesterday that she only receives $20 grand a year which is not enough since she was accustomed to a lifestyle we can only dream of and to think she can live off of that amount is ridiculous. The royal family are heartless people.

  11. cprincess says:

I can assure you that Andrew is not the most ‘normal’ one-in fact he is known for pulling rank and as for her-shes always been a pain in the arse who wanted to milk the fact that she married one of the royal family for all its worth-the queen has already bailed her out once and there is absolutely no reason why the royals should do it again…
The royals know that they exist but for the grace of the people and behave accordingly-the queen ascended the throne in her early 20s upon the early death of her father and has spent her lifetime in duty and service to the country-compare her to many despote royal families and others around the world!
It incenses me that this trollope Ferguson is still living off the monarchy in all sorts of insidious ways-its time she got a job…
By the way-Charles is totally cool-hes known for it!

  12. heb says:

Four years since the divorce? Try Fourteen.

  13. Uzi says:

Members of the extended royal family are a bunch of freeloaders and leeches that use their titles to impress a lot of people, so why is Fergie any different? She’s just more up front about it! How is she any tackier than the royal family of Monaco, especially Princess Stephanie who had an out-of-wedlock child with a circus performer? I think the reason that so many Americans like Fergie is that she’s “real,” warts and all, as opposed to her stuffy ex-inlaws. I’ve always thought that Andrew was pressured by his family to dump her, and have admired how they’ve remained good friends and devoted parents to their two daughters.

  14. Attagirl says:

She’s made huge amounts of money being the spokesperson for Weight Watchers, writing books, speaking engagements and other endorsements. She was and is a compulsive spender and even when she was married to Prince Andrew, she ran up staggering debts so that by the time they divorced she owed something like 4 million pounds. No wonder they called her the Duchess of Pork…

  15. meme says:

I love the word trollope. Brits talk good LOL

  16. Britwit says:

It’s spelled trollop – trollope is the last name of the Victorian writer Anthony Trollope…

  17. Lenora says:

“It incenses me that this trollope Ferguson is still living off the monarchy in all sorts of insidious ways-its time she got a job…”

Are you serious? The monarchy is living off of the backs of the hard-working people in England. How about THEY get a job.

  18. original kate says:

wow – he certainly has aged better then prince charles.

  19. Bee says:

@Meme I love British words/phrases too! Everytime I hear a Brit go on about something or someone being “dodgy”, while at the same time discussing how “brilliant” something is, after complaing that someting is complete “bollocks”, as they’re eating a “proper” meal, and eyeing someone they think is “fit”, I want to do a little happy dance. And don’t even get me started on my love of British men.

  20. Morgs says:

Of course he has. He was in on it.

  21. memee says:

Andrew has never stopped loving Fergie. In fact, I believe they’d still be married but his parents can’t stand her, and they call the shots.

  22. Nuharoo says:

“How is she any tackier than the royal family of Monaco, especially Princess Stephanie who had an out-of-wedlock child with a circus performer?”

Ah! Now we know who she should marry next, Albert of Monaco! He has billions and she would fit in just fine!

  23. snapnhiss says:

I thought that was a photo of Dan Quayle at first. Man, I’m losing it. hehe

  24. thepickle says:

ick, she’s a pig, so boring, This is royalty? thank god for hollywood.

  25. MoMo says:

What I don’t understand is why she did it in the first place! I can’t believe there are so few high income job opportunities for someone of her education, work experience and status (even as an ex royal). She could be a spokes person for just about any company or product imaginable. Didn’t she produce a movie last year? Maybe she does have mental health problems.

  26. Julie says:

I have always had a soft spot for Fergie. Her heart does seem to be in the right place even though she does the most childish and immature things. It’s true, she has tried to cash in on her former royal status. Remember, though, she didn’t get the big cash payout that Diana received and was left to her own devices to pay her bills.

As for Andrew, I’m not sure he’s as popular in the UK as some here think. They don’t call him Airmiles Andy for nothing. He’s been known to have his hand out, too, and he plays lots of golf at the taxpayers expense. But I think he does still love her and has already forgiven her.

  27. cprincess says:

“Are you serious? The monarchy is living off of the backs of the hard-working people in England. How about THEY get a job.”
Actually the queen does have a job and she does not live off the ‘hardworking British’…
She is,independently one of the richest women in the world and as I said before has spent her WHOLE life in service to the country and she alone brings in vast amounts of tourist revenue and tourists to Britain…
She knows how to act,NEVER abuses her position and is right now is apparently ‘incandescent with rage’ over Fergie and her shenanigans.
It pisses me off when people make statements about them living off the people-the Civil list is very small and the vast majority of the British appreciate the immediate Royal family and see them as good value-its all the hangers on (like Fergie)etc that we cant stand…
By the way-the word on the street re the divorce between her and Andrew is that she caught him with a man-the Queen cant and didnt force them to divorce-it was her choice-the problem is now that she has never found a rich husband to keep her in the style that she became accustomed too…

  28. jc126 says:

She’s a dope, but she has suffered a lot of trauma in her life, with her mother leaving her and then being horribly killed.
I always thought it was kind of a bummer that she and Andrew didn’t stay together.

  29. Boxy Lady says:

One of the reported reasons why she has no money is she made some investments in companies that then folded and she lost something like 2 mil.

  30. P.J. says:

Andrew’s forgiveness will definitely help make the scandal die down faster. If he didn’t, then there would be the ongoing drama of where would she go, what would she do, and the bad publicity would never end. He’s behaving like a gentleman and giving her a room in his castle, which is the right thing to do. His daughters are very close to their mother and I’m sure they want her at the family home too. What are they going to do, tell their father to throw Mummy out?

  31. Sonja says:

What happened to her deal with Weight Watchers? Surely, she is still getting money from them for the sell of books and speaking engagements.
In any case, Andrew doesn’t seem the type not to provide support for his ex wife and daughters. Sounds like a case of greed gone wrong.

  32. Whatever says:

“Andrew has never stopped loving Fergie. In fact, I believe they’d still be married but his parents can’t stand her, and they call the shots.”

This is what I think. Shortly after they divorced, I saw an interview with her and she pretty much said that the queen hated her and the pressure and lack of support, plus frequent separations for “duty” that she felt were orchastrated to keep them apart is what did in the marriage.

I’ve always had the feeling that they both still love each other on some level and it’s a little sad, but sweet that they still support each other.

  33. badrockandroll says:

Do the Brits call him Airmiles or Aimless Andy? I always thought that he was a bit of a dolt. And I never liked her either. What Americans don’t get is the type of snobbery and class limitations that can exist in England. Fergie’s family was never “in” or aristocratic, they were facilitators and hangers on, and her marriage wasn’t going to change that perception. She didn’t have a good education and wasn’t properly equipped for any sort of life beyond hobby jobs and arm candy. I would almost feel sorry for her, but she has always been grasping and living beyond her means, both financial and internal.

Not that any of them would ever accept my invitation, but now that the Queen Mom is gone, the only royal I would ever want to hang out with would be poor passed over Anne. I think that she’s the only one in her generation with anything approaching a brain, which makes it very easy to write her off as a b!tch. But I think that she is also the only one who is even remotely happy. Liz and Phillip may be many things, but I don’t think that they were great parents.

  34. My2Cents says:

When is it kick a Ranga day again?

  35. Orbit says:

    My2Cents: Too obscure. 🙂

  36. My2Cents says:

I was reading today that there is an acutal “kick a ranga day” (kick a red head for you non aussies).
She needs a good kick up the butt if you ask me. 🙂

  37. Julie says:

Badrock@34: They actually do call him Airmiles Andy but Aimless works just as well. He receives lots of freebies stemming from this roving British business ambassador gig he has. Free accommodations in Dubai, military helicopters to get to the golf course. He recently hit a police officer speeding into Buckingham Palace. Not too bright. Nor is Sarah, who, like Diana, barely got out of high school. Not that a university degree automatically bestows genius on anyone. Princess Anne (who you mentioned) never went to college either, but seems to have more brains and balls than her three brothers put together! I think Prince Philip would agree.

Just wait until the aristocratic snobs get hold of the Middleton clan. People here don’t agree with me but this pending marriage will be a disaster. I think Kate will find that it was not worth the wait.

  38. canadianchick says:

Fergie-nice betrayal of your ex, how trashy! Get a real job! And what a doormat he is-kick her untrustworthy a$$ out. Nice role models for their daughters, what a messed up family.

  39. snowball says:

If either Andrew or Fergie had a backbone, if they loved each other so much, they would have told P. Phillip to shove it when he said they had to divorce. What a bunch of idiots.

Mother of his girls or not, he looks like a moron for just ignoring what she did. If NOTW is to be believed (I know, I know), it’s not the first time. They wouldn’t have set her up if they didn’t already have some info that she’d done it before or at least was looking for someone to buy her services.

Not that any royal family anywhere is without scandal, but there’s a difference between having kids out of wedlock or screwing every guy you meet and trying to sell out your ex’s influence because you can’t manage to keep to a budget like other adults.

ita, canadianchic, what a crappy role model for her kids.

  40. kitty says:

I think poor Andy needs to wake up and smell the tea (so to speak). She is no good and he is kind, and to sweet. He needs to tell her, to take care and go your own way. Wish her well, but he needs to have her go.

He should find someone with morals, and who will treat him with respect.

  41. Dani says:

I have long harbored hope of a reconciliation between these two. Clearly there is still some feeling there.
