Dolly Parton defends Miley Cyrus: “She’s 17, let’s leave Miley alone!”

fp_5295337_parton_dolly_cjny_062910

Y’all know I love me some Dolly Parton. She’s a f-cking goddess, and nothing makes me tear up faster than “Coat of Many Colors”. Anything she says I will take as the gospel, as if God is whispering His divine messages of hope in Dolly’s ear. So you know what that means – I have to stop making fun of Miley Cyrus. That’s what Dolly told me to do! She was on The Late Show last night, and Letterman started asking her about Miley Cyrus. It turns out, Dolly has known the Cyruses for forever, and Dolly refers to herself as Miley’s “fairy godmother”. And what does Dolly think about Miley wandering around in lingerie and trying to be provocative and sexy? Dolly says: “I’m there for her if she needs me, and I get upset lately, they’ve been hammering her to death, and she’s been trying hard to make the transition from Hannah Montana — she’s 17, and at that age … I know how I was at 17, so let’s leave Miley alone!” F-ck. I have to do what Dolly says. The video is here.

Country music legend Dolly Parton — appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday night – said it’s time to leave Miley Cyrus alone, as the Hannah Montana star continues to take jabs in the media for her sexed-up image while promoting her new album, Can’t Be Tamed.

Parton, who said she’s Miley’s unofficial “fairy Godmother” told Letterman: “I’m there for her if she needs me, and I get upset lately, they’ve been hammering her to death, and she’s been trying hard to make the transition from Hannah Montana — she’s 17, and at that age … I know how I was at 17, so let’s leave Miley alone!”

Letterman said in response, “I think she’ll be alright because she’s very smart … I didn’t realize how smart that kid is.”

Cyrus appeared on Letterman earlier this month and addressed the controversy, saying, “I’m still a kid and I still do kid things. Anyone who says, ‘She’s growing too quickly,’ doesn’t know me personally.”

[From Radar]

Apparently Miley came to Dollywood to film a special for the 25th anniversary of the theme park, and they did a duet of Dolly’s hit “Jolene”. I found this video from E! News, and can I just say? Miley doesn’t sound horrible when she’s covering one of Dolly’s beautiful songs. Too bad she wants to be a trashy pop artist rather than a bluesy country singer.

I love Dolly. She’s such a sweetheart. I remember staring at supermarket tabs while sitting in the shopping cart as a kid back in the 80s and being fascinated/freaked out by Dolly’s huge rack—-whose ever-increasing size was a popular subject for the Enquirer and friends.

  2. mln says:

If Miley would promise to stop making appearances grown up shows I would be happy to leave her alone.
I really didn’t give a hoot about her either way until she appeared on Idol this year to mentor the contestants her talentless a%$# really?? She wouldn’t even have made it to the top 10 in the real world.
I think she needs to go back to the kids shows until she is ready to act like a grown up.

And no matter how much I love Dolly I don’t have to accept all the marketing for that little bratty millionare

  3. fashionfreak says:

the problem people have with miley isn’t that she’s 17, trying to find who she is, and makes average teenage blunders. the problem is she dresses like a skank (even though she may not be) and thinks its ok. no matter who you are, if you dress unappropriately people aren;t gonna think highly of you at all.

  4. TEX says:

“F-ck. I have to do what Dolly says.”

HAHAHA! Those were my EXACT thoughts when I read the headline- EXACTLY. If I couldn’t rely on Dolly to be my moral compass I’d be lost. Long Live Dolly. Love her. Going to listen to Hard Candy Christmas now…

  5. zen says:

I love Dolly too but my ears still hurt every time I see a pic of Miley with a mic.
If her family and Dolly truly love her, then they need to be honest and tell her she cant sing for sh*t, regardless of her “desperate for attention” type of outfits she wears.

  6. irl says:

I’m with Dolly 100%. Leave her and all the other kids alone.
I’ve thought the same for the last couple of years. Seems every little thing Miley does is splashed all over the place. then she gets torn up and a big deal is made of normal teen girl stuff. ridic.

  7. TQB says:

Damnit, Kaiser, I’m with you. Dolly’s word is gospel. No more on Miley from me.

  8. Sarah says:

    Well if Dolly says so…

  9. Annicka says:

    LEAVE MILEY ALOOOOOOONE.

I can’t believe no one else said that. Miley is out in the public eye, so people are going to give her hell, no matter how old or how young she is. She makes it easier for people to make fun of her because she dresses like a hobag. But if she agrees to stop making ‘music’, stop ‘acting’, and just fall off the face of the planet, then I will agree to stop making fun of the little buck-toothed hillbilly.

  10. Just saying says:

Just so you all know Dolly actually is Miley’s god mother.

Dolly also continually defends Jessica Simpson who she is also is very good friends with & supports.

  11. original kate says:

i have no problem with miley, other than i don’t think she has any talent. my problem is with miley’s parents and the piss-poor job they are doing. but i also love me some dolly.

  12. YT says:

    I agree. Leave Miley alone.

If you need to go after someone, go after the do-nothings who can only party and pose for the cameras.

  13. Nuharoo says:

I remember how people starting bashing Britney and her fans said to ‘leave her alone, she’s just 15/16/17’ without realizing that at that age, she was dressing ALL WRONG for her age. I remember that Rolling Stone issue and there were outcries that Britney was promoting pedophilia, which is what it looked like. No one Miley’s ages should be dressing and acting the way she is.

Miley has no business dressing like that. If she dressed better, decently, then people wouldn’t be bashing her. Mandy Moore to my knowing wasn’t as bad as these starlets are these days. There is nothing good that will come of her doing this. Has no one learned from the mess that is now Britney’s life?

It happens all the time to these sexpots. It happened to Marilyn for pity’s sake. There is no way that Miley is going to come out of this unscathed.

  14. irl says:

I’ve worked hotels for alot of years across the US. Last one I worked, I did room service for 4 years at the Four Seasons. I have seen so many stars, sports hero’s and dignitaries.

I just want to share that Dolly was the nicest, sweetest, most wonderful down to earth famous person I EVER met.
All she wanted was a BLT and a cup of soup, she’d say she didn’t want to trouble anyone. At the frickin Four Seasons she didn’t want to trouble anyone. Hell, that’s what we were there for! Compared to all the famous folks that acted like spoiled 5 year olds and all the unreasonable demands some made and the way they treated hotel employees like slaves. . .she was just sweet and awesome to people. God Bless Dolly Parton!

  15. danielle says:

Ok, I have to defend Miley now – Dolly the Great told me too! Honestly, 17 years olds do dress like Miley – not the performance outfits but the regular outfits. They are just not famous.

  16. Marianne says:

I get that she’s transitioning herself from Hannah Montana, but surely there is a better way than dressing like a skank. Because as someone else said on here…people aren’t going to think highly of you.

And Danielle, your right. Most teenagers do dress like that. Doesn’t make it right. Not too mention, I’m sure they’re called names behind their backs. It just doesn’t happen on a national level.

  17. Sibin S. says:

Whenever I get up in the morning in a bad mood, I put Dolly Parton in the player.
When I have a bad day at the car repair shop, I pop in 9 to 5 in the cd and everything looks better.
I’ve been her fan since I was like 5 years old and I’ve watched her a lot on TV. Seems to me that she can only give good advice to Miley.
After all, she is a big star with huge experience.

  18. Bopa says:

Sure Dolly the second Miley starts acting and dressing like a 17 year old people will leave her alone. Her people know exactly what they are doing and negative actions bring negative attention.

  19. Corina says:

Ok so…I love me some Dolly. I think she’s the sweetest thing since apple pie, she’s funny, and she seems humble. She owns her personal style with no apologies, which is why I don’t feel TOO bad saying this…

I’m not sure Dolly is all that in touch with normal standards of classy attire. One could say that perhaps her outfits are umm…a bit much, bless her heart. She rocks the fake boobs and skintight spandex like nobody’s business, and good for her, but I don’t really think she’s much of an expert on appropriate clothing.

My personal opinion is that stars who became famous by catering to a child audience (like most of the Disney teen queens) should try to dress in a non-whorey manner until they are 18. Then everyone can say yes sweetie, I know you want to dress like Hannah Montana, but Miley is a grownup now and grownups dress different than little girls.

Plus then none of us would have to feel so horribly uncomfortable with clicking on a seemingly innocent link and finding a camel toe concert shot of a minor. Just sayin! (not a dig at CB at all, btw, I think this site handles such things with pretty much as much class as the internet allows)

  20. popcorny says:

Sorry, Dolly, but that just makes me want to skewer that backwood-belch all the more.

  21. Nuharoo says:

After everything that’s said and done, Miley isn’t dressing like a normal seventeen year old. She is dressing like a tart. She is dressing like someone who isn’t a lady and I could use much worse in my description. The biggest problems with Miley is that she’s making it out that the only way to become an adult is to dress like a tart.

She could step away, take serious acting lessons, spend time studying technique.

  22. di butler says:

What’s with the continual “Miley dresses like a skank” deal? Is it that hard to understand performance costume vs. street clothes? And do none of you have kids, a mall, or a community pool? I live in a upper middle class gated community, very conservative area, and I see more nudity than that freaking body suit every day of summer. What about school dance costumes, cheerleaders, etc? Those are pretty raunchy these days, along with their moves. Those are just costumes, too. I’d like to return to a more naive time, too, but it doesn’t look like that’s happening.

  23. For Sooth? says:

I haven’t read any other comments so forgive me if this has been voiced umpteen times already – Dolly, just worry your pretty head about how your wigs look and let society parent Miley because it is obvious that her parents aren’t doing their job!

  24. Bobby the K says:

    ‘Leave her alone’?

If people left her alone she’d have no career. That’s what happens to nobody’s, they get left alone

Miley is about getting attention and appearing rebellious without actually being rebellious. the slutty thing is a way a lot of young women express what they think is their power. And she wants to disassociate herself from the equally fake disney wholesomeness. And it’s already backfiring. Not all of her old fans like the direction she is going in, and her search for new slut-approving fans won’t be that fruitful, they’ll go for more attractive/talented skank.

Dolly and her ilk can be sexy, classy and talented all at the same time. Miley can’t cut it that way. and Dolly knows there are much more talented women out there, legions of them.

Maybe Letterman’s right, maybe she is smart, but she has to rely on her fans being not so smart.

  25. Keen says:

I love Dolly too! and I’m with you, whatever she says goes.

  26. barndoor says:

irony is obviously lost on the large boobed one.

  27. Raven says:

Good for Dolly. I don’t think kids under 18 should be gossip fodder. Her father is another story–he’s an idiot and a loser besides being a bad parent.

  28. snowball says:

Dolly loves everyone; I don’t think she’s physically or emotionally capable of every saying a mean word about anyone, ever. I think if you looked at Dolly and told her her hair looked bad, she’d laugh and make a joke, then go back to her house and cry and then God would immediately strike you dead for insulting one of his angels. Yes, I mean that seriously.

But please, Miley? That girl needs guidance. Look back a few days to the pics from the MMMAs (the Canadian show) where she’s wearing that tragic white thing. Her hoohoo is literally a quarter inch from hanging out. One small movement from her leg and we’ve got labia. From a 17 year old. On what I presume was live television.

I’ve seen some slutty clothes on my kid’s classmates. But when the entire world’s looking at your daughter and you’ve probably got fat old men doing things in their pants to pictures of her, as a parent (or a fairy godmother), wouldn’t you rather tell your jailbait kid to dial it back just a notch? Maybe tell her to slap on some hotpants rather than just to flop out there in a thong?

That just might kill some of the gossip, Dolly.

  29. serena says:

I still don’t like miley, she’s trying too hard.

  30. grrrlgrace says:

“I’m still a kid and I still do kid things…anyone who says I’m growing up too quickly doesn’t know me personally.”

OK, Miley ( & Dolly), so answer this…why is it okay for your legions of tween fans to see and hear the slutty crap you’re presenting now? Experiencing this trash isn’t being “like a kid” or doing “kid things”. It’s growing up too fast. Like it or not, you’re still strongly connected to Hannah Montana and little girls will still pad your pockets, which I’m sure you appreciate. And, unfortunately, many parents aren’t in touch with what their children are seeing and hearing…they simply plunk down the cash for it.

I only hope that most parents are cutting her off from their kids like I have. Those who make her the piles of cash will grow up too fast watching her trash.

She has created herself as a public image for children. It’s up to her to completely sever that image before she presents herself as a ho. Not a whole five seconds later…

  31. mannequin says:

Sorry Dolly but even at the young age of 17, a girl should have more respect for herself.
Why do you think other celebrities her age aren’t bashed? They are skankless.

  32. jane16 says:

Love Dolly. But still don’t like Miley & really can’t stand her “music”.

  33. I Choose Me says:

If she (Miley) would dress more often the way she’s dressed during the duet of Jolene – in cute, appropriate clothing – people would leave her alone. Until then, if she continues to put it out there, people are gonna continue to have an opinion about it. Dolly sees the good in everybody bless her heart and I love her but nothing she says will make me not disapprove of Miley and her family.

  34. Laura says:

I love how everyone calls Miley a little girl even though she’s almost 18. I guess there’s a huge difference between 17 and 364 days and 18.
And yes, all teenage girls dress like this and no, there’s nothing wrong with it. You find your sexual identity in your teens and explore it.

  35. becca says:

To those that are saying that all teenage girls dress like slags, I’ve got something to say: I’m 21. My friends and I never, ever, EVER dressed the way she does in high school. And to be honest, I don’t think many 17 year old girls can…unless their high school dress code is nonexistent. And if they can do so outside of their high schools, I’ve got a few choice words to say to their parents.

To those that are remembering Britney, looking back I’m quite honestly surprised at the comparison. There really isn’t any. Take these two things into account:

    1) There was an entirely different version of what was considered “risque” in the late 90s when Britney came onto the scene. If a teenage pop singer decided to dance in her music videos with her midriff showing, few would bat an eyelash. But back then people’s jaws hit the floor.

    2) Britney was never entirely innocent. There was a very subtle raunchiness to “Hit Me Baby One More Time.” And if you look at her album covers, they start to become more “sexed” up as time progresses. Britney’s transition was a FAR more smoother one than Miley’s has been. For Miley, it’s been raunchy, and in your face. It’s also been trashy and rude.

And if Britney had gone STRAIGHT from being a Musketeer to sex kitten popstar, there would be a much more apt reason to compare the two of them. But there was a break between Britney’s childhood career and her venture into her career as a pop artist. With Miley, we get absolutely none of that. And she’s loosing fans because of it.

Not only that, but Miley is an absolutely sanctimonious, pretentious little hypocrite. She was previously marketed as an absolutely squeaky clean, 120% clean little Madonna virgin for her main fanbase – which I believe consisted of 12-13 year olds at their very oldest. She has talked before about her professed devotion to her religion, and her views on chastity – which were all positively viewed for the parents of the little girls that worshipped the ground she walks on.

Furthermore, take a closer look at Britney’s “breakout point.” That strip-thing she did at the 2000 VMAs? Yeah, the dance moves were a bit raunchy, but looking back – and comparing Miley and Britney – Britney actually chose a rather tasteful outfit. While her two piece skintight sparkly outfit was essentially a tightly wound bra on the top, Britney was wearing PANTS. Yes, they were rather lowridding, but they were still PANTS nontheless.

Britney’s transition was gradual; Miley’s is way too sudden, trashy, and simply screams tryhard. Look at Christina Aguilera. She went a “Miley” route, and her “edgier” look wasn’t very well received. (while the album musically was, but the thing with Christina is that she can actually SING). She then took a few years to recoop, and she emerged with her third album with a brand new look that was genuinely sexy and mature.

Miley apparently wants to be taken seriously as an actress. Good for her I suppose? But if she’s looking to make an immediate transition into a “serious actress,” she’s going to be in for a VERY rude awakening. All people see in her now is loudmouthed little Hannah Montana that tried to become “edgier” and “mature” and just came off as even louder and trashy. I honestly think if she genuinely wants to become a serious actress, she needs to drop off of the radar for a few years once her current contracts are up. Take a small handful of acting classes, because Will Smith is one of the rare cases of a musician also having serious acting talent, and one is really never an expert at something – they are always learning. Then she should start looking for those serious movie roles she’s been craving and pop back up on the radar five years later. People will be able to drink in a more mature face, and it will be easier to separate her past career from her present and it will be MUCH easier for her to present a more mature persona to the mature audience she’s clearly craving attention from.

  36. Vi says:

@Laura: No, not ‘all’. Most, sure, but not all. Be more careful when you generalize.

  37. Wiley says:

Did Miley show off her nipples and/or twat at Dollyworld? Why not? Did Dolly ask her not too because there were children present? How many porn shows has Dolly hired for her place? How many young children does Dolly have? Dolly is a senile old bag and has been for as long as I can remember. We’re all supposed to sacrifice our children to Miley because it’s good for Miley and it has Dolly’s approval?

  38. Wiley says:

What world do all of you women live in. I’ve yet to ever see a nipple or crotch part bared in my neighborhood, pool, school, or anywhere around me. Teen girls are careful because they don’t want to be embarrassed. Sure, they wear bikinis but their bikinis stay where they belong. I hear you saying that it’s ok because “everyone” is doing it. That’s the same excuse women use when they decide to have sex at an early age and it has never been true. Everyone is not an excuse! I hope you don’t have children because you obviously don’t know what you’re doing. And I don’t care how old you are it is never appropriate to show your private parts to a child, even if you’re 15, 18, 21, or 90 like Dolly. Miley can do anything she wants if she’s 18 and it’s an all adult audience but there’s probably codes and laws against it in most cities. Once can be excused as an accident but she should have been arrested the second time she exposed herself. That is child porn and we have rather strict laws against it.

  39. XYZ says:

First of all, look at urself in the mirror, dear DOLLY then u can give BS advices. So its all normal for MILEY to act like she does at her age, rite? Whats next?
