Whoopi Goldberg: I know Mel Gibson & he’s not racist; ‘drunks say stupid things’

I watched The View this morning seeing if they’d address the controversy over their inaccurate “Down Low” conversation pertaining to gay black men last month. (As we mentioned earlier today, GLAAD has taken out a full page ad criticizing The View for inaccuracy and asking for an apology.) They didn’t, (at least in the first half that I saw) but they did discuss Mel Gibson’s rant against Oksana. One thing I found very interesting is that Whoopi Goldberg sort-of defended Mel and said she knew him personally and knew he wasn’t a racist. (Video is above.) She did admit repeatedly that he was an “a**hole” and a “bonehead” though. Joy countered that the guy is a racist and anti-semite and that there are plenty of people who drink heavily and don’t say those things. It’s worth noting that Whoopi is not saying Mel was drunk when he said those awful things to Oksana, she’s saying he was drunk when he went off on the police officer during his 2006 DUI arrest. Here’s the relevant part of their conversation.

Whoopi: I don’t like what he did here, but I know Mel and I know he’s not a racist… He may be a bonehead… I have had a long friendship with Mel…

You can say he’s being a bonehead but I can’t sit and say that he’s a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I can’t say it and so I really just need to say that. I don’t like what he’s done. Make no mistake…

Joy: Do you think he’s anti-semitic?

Whoopi: I think he’s an a**hole (covers mouth, audio is silent)

Joy: Somebody says to a police officer, “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” That’s not anti-semitic?

Whoopi: Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time because they’re drunk. They’re out of control. They are not thinking they are idiotic. That’s why I don’t like alcohol. I can’t say anything about that because I know what people are like when they’re drunk. This rant, I don’t think he’s drunk on this rant…

Joy: A lot of people drink and don’t say those things.

Bonnie Fuller of Hollywood Life was on MSNBC this morning discussing this topic and she thinks that Mel’s career is just about over now that this tape has come out. Mel’s been officially dropped by his agency and the release of his film The Beaver with Jodie Foster has been postponed. He’s not a bankable star by any stretch at this point and the future of all of his projects is up to question.

Meanwhile more of Mel Gibson’s very offensive disgusting e-mail rant has been posted on Radar. Kaiser will cover that shortly and the gist is that it’s worse than the last one.

Why in the world is Whoopie throwing down for Mel? I just don’t get it. He’s the racist who says, “Some of my best friends are black.” Too bad she’s one of those friends. She should distance herself from him, because he will only make her look bad. There’s no good reason anyone should be an apologist for that raging asshole.

  2. ering says:

Like I really needed more of a reason to dislike Whoopi Goldberg.

  3. lena says:

hmmmmm this is coming from “not rape rape” whoopi, therfore her argument is invalid

  4. MARKYMARK says:

Whoopi is smart, but she better tread carefully on this one. I was associated (thru work) with a guy who I later realized had a racist streak in him. It is very hard to admit that you might have been fooled by someone like this and Whoopi may want to re-examine some of her past slips (TED DANSON BLACKFACE-ANYONE)

  5. OXA says:

The only thing the drink did is losen the tongue, it did not put the hateful & abusive actions or thoughts in his head.

  6. Praise St. Angie! says:

yeah, Whoopi THINKS she “knows him personally”. like a lot of racists, he was careful of what he said, and to whom.

in private, when he thinks no one is listening? that’s when his true feelings come out.

but as lena said, this is coming from Whoopi “it’s not rape-rape” Goldberg, so…whatever. I stopped liking Whoopi when she made that comment.

and Joy is right…I’ve been under the influence (further under than I would have liked) plenty of times in my life and have NEVER uttered a racial or ethnic slur. why? BECAUSE I’M NOT A BIGOT.

  7. MissyA says:

    Whoopi, no!!!

  8. mollyb says:

    In vino veritas, Whoopi.

  9. Dorothy says:

Whoopi always defends celebrities. I find it really annoying – like she doesn’t want to burn bridges for doing movies in the future. I LOVE Joy BTW!!!!

Both Mel and Whoopi are assholes. (oh and I can’t forget Elizabeth – she’s one too :))

  10. audrey says:

SHUT UP WHOOPI. She should have stopped talking right around the time she defended Roman “Rape-Rape” Polanski. Seriously, has she appointed herself the defender of all celebrities who commit acts of violence against women? I honestly don’t get it.

  11. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Yea I think Whoopi just feels the need to defend him because she thought she knew him. Whoopi even mentioned that she had him around her kids. So I think she is just having trouble dealing with who Mel really is because like Joy stated people can get really drunk and not say stuff like that. He doesn’t even sound that drunk on the tapes to me. Mel Gibson is certainly racist with a statement like that. He may have been angry with her but I don’t see how he isn’t racist or an anti-Semite.

  12. djork says:

Whoopi Goldberg, a celebrity’s best friend. What a freakin’ maroon.

  13. Kiska says:

    Whoopi is delusional.

  14. Tia C says:

Oh, Whoopi. Honestly, what is the matter with you? She’s probably just trying to keep the discussion interesting, but puh-leez. I think it’s safe to say that the majority of the world is now aware that Mel is a racist and a misogynist. Denial is not a river in Egypt. He keeps spewing the epithets and the hate, and it seems to happen even when he’s not drinking. It is who he is.

  15. Ron says:

I hate to tell Whoopi this, but when people are drunk they let loose their true feelings. He may have never said that to your face, but there is no doubt that is what he really thinks. For someone who was once so beautiful, he sure has turn out to be a truly ugly human being.

  16. lrm says:

    you mean a freakin’ ‘moron’?
or, a freakin’ maroon-or a freakin’ red, or green, or mauve….
    lol i crack myself up.

  17. original kate says:

if mel is such a boneheaded, drunken asshole why is whoopi good friends with him? that says something about her character; birds of a feather & all. and also? i am officially on the joy behar love train.

  18. Nibbi says:

i kind of like whoopi for this. what she’s saying here gives me the impression that she’ll say what she thinks, be true to herself and relationships she’s had with people, even if it’s not “political” or “convenient” for her/ her image. so many people, TOO MANY PEOPLE, even if they HAVE had him in their home around their kids, been friends for years, etc., would be willing to totally wash their hands as soon as things look bad and deny ever having had anything to do with him. i hate people like that- it’s so dishonest not to speak up with your perspective if you’ve got an actual one on someone if it goes against the grain of what everyone else is saying.
as for the “rape-rape” thing, i don’t know what that is about, though…

  19. Tess says:

Bugs Bunny was a genius…and Whoopie Goldberg is a maroon.

  20. canadianchick says:

Whoopi was pretty ticked at the Tea Partyers who were racist a couple months ago. Weird how she is defending him-I guess if he wasn’t racist to her face then he must not be racist *eyeroll*.

  21. bizzy says:

Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time because they’re drunk.

yes, in my case it was things like “hi. wanna fuck?” this is because my id is a nymphomaniac. in mel’s case, his id is a racist, anti-semitic, misogynist. god, it’s not like your drunk-brain is a complete stranger or normally lives in someone else’s skull. your drunk-brain is just *your brain*, *drunk*.

  22. Lin99 says:

MEL IS MOST DEFINITELY A HATE FILLED MAN, WITH SEVERE ANGER AND IMPULSE CONTROL ISSUES…..WHETHER OR NOT HE ACTUALLY BELIEVES THE SHIT HE IS SPOUTING IS A WHOLE OTHER CAN OF WORMS….JUST HEAR ME OUT.

I HAVE WORKED IN GROUP HOMES FOR YEARS THAT PROVIDE AFTER CARE TO VIOLENT ABUSIVE MEN AND YOUNG TEENS. I HAVE SEEN MEN AND BOYS WHO WOULD HOLD MY DOOR OPEN AND CARRY IN THE GROCERIES FOR ME…SPIT IN MY FACE A CALL ME EVERY NAME IN THE BOOK, THREATEN TO KILL MY FAMILY OR “SLIT MY WHITE BITCH THROAT” THESE ARE MEN AND BOYS OF ALL DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND RACES.
WHEN THEIR ANGER TAKES CONTROL OF THEM THEY BRING UP EVERY HURTFUL THING THEY HAVE HEARD OVER THE YEARS….SOME OF THEIR RANTS JUST MADE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE TO SITUATION AT HAND. AFTERWARDS WITH TIME TO REFLECT WE CAN GET TO THE ROOT OF THEIR ANGER AND FIND OUT WHY THEY CHOSE THOSE HURTFUL WORDS….AND IT’S OFTEN JUST A LEARNED RESPONSE

I HAVE TO WONDER IF MEL IS THIS TYPE OF PERSON….IF HE LOOSES CONTROL AND JUST SPOUTS THE MOST HATEFUL THINGS HE CAN COME UP WITH….I’M SURE HIS FATHER GAVE HIM PLENTY OF AMMO AS A CHILD

MEL NEEDS SERIOUS SERIOUS HELP FOR HIS ANGER AND THEN HE NEEDS TO BRING AWARENESS TO HOW RAGE AND ANGER CAN LEAD DOWN A PATH YOU NEVER EXPECTED TO FIND YOURSELF ON AND IT CAN VERY WELL DESTROY LIVES.

(sorry about the caps lock…but I’m not retyping lol)

  23. M says:

I’m sorry, But even if he was drunk those thoughts must have been there in his subconscious to say them. The only difference is, you can’t control what comes out of your mouth when your drunk.

  24. denise says:

    Whoopi please shutup!
This dingbat also defended Roman Polanski. I wonder if she would still defend him, had it been her granddaughter.

  25. isabelle says:

SO SICK of this woman excusing and defending apalling behaviour on the part of her hollywood buddies. YUCK.

  26. Bella Bella says:

It reminds me of when she defended Roman Polanski. There’s something seriously wrong with her.

  27. Westcoaster says:

Did Whoopi make this comment to just up the ratings for the View? Drunk or not for Mel to make comments like that is disgusting. As for Whoopi does she think that just because her friends and collegues( Roman anyone?) are celebrities does that make them incapable of doing horrible things?

  28. JustBe says:

I think for people like Whoopi, there is a belief that if someone is rich/successful/popular, they can’t possibly be a bad person. The belief is that they exist on a higher plane than the majority of humanity, so we should excuse them of their little transgressions. She didn’t even make a coherent argument about why she believes that he’s not a racist, just the ‘oh, he was drunk’ excuse and he never behaved that way in my presence. So, if, while he was drunk, he physically abused his spouse and/or kids, could we say that he’s not an abuser. I know that there is a difference between actions and words, but when your words evoke such a blatant level of hate and rage against any one person and group, then yes you are an abuser and you are a racist.
BTW, Whoopi, the vast majority of racists and abusers don’t show their true form in front of anyone except the people that they have control over. They mask their rage until they are in their comfort zone when they can fully release the hate.
I hate that she has a national forum where she can espouse this level of ignorance and add to the shame of victims of hate and abuse.

  29. hellen says:

Whoopi has no credibility anymore. Too often she came come down on the side of idiots who deserve no defense. So shut it, girlfriend.

  30. Bee says:

I like Whoopi, but the thing that annoys me about her is that she is constantly defending various celebs for bad behavior because she “knows them.” I don’t care if Whoopi made nice slow love to Mel (she probably did)that still wouldn’t mean that Mel Gibson isn’t a racist. Slave owners (and no, I’m not comparing Mel to a slave owner) raped their slaves all the time. Does that mean they weren’t racist? I have been really angry at times, and NEVER have I even thought of hurling a racist slur at, or about, anyone. Racists say racist things! The. End.

  31. Annicka says:

Whoopi Goldberg tends to say some stupid things too. Just shut up and stay out of it, Whoopi.

  32. Jeri says:

I used to respect Whoopi & think she was fairly intelligent, however, her defense of some people & other statements she has made have caused me to change my opinion of her.

  33. LolaBella says:

“Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time because they’re drunk.

yes, in my case it was things like “hi. wanna fuck?” this is because my id is a nymphomaniac. in mel’s case, his id is a racist, anti-semitic, misogynist.”

@bizzy: your response made me LOL, but it is so on the money about Mel.

Alcohol loosens your inhibitions and provides the ‘liquid courage’ for you to be brave and do and say shit you wouldn’t normally do. Like when you tell your lazy , incompetent boss that she’s an asshole while you’re happily drunk at the office Christmas party.

Seriously, what we are hearing IS Mel; those are his thoughts and beliefs being revealed not him saying ‘stupid things’.

  34. lucy2 says:

I can understand having a hard time believing the worst about someone you are friends with, but…come on. At some point, you have to call it like it is – he’s racist, bigoted, anti-semitic, and all around a nasty, angry, rotten person.
And some others have made good points – if she’s sitting there saying he’s an a-hole, why is she friends with him??

  35. Crash2GO2 says:

I’m surprise Jodi Foster has been a friend to him as well, considering all the horrible things he has said about homosexuals.

Whoopi – you opened your mouth and proved yourself an idiot.

  36. Iggles says:

    @ Westcoaster:
As for Whoopi does she think that just because her friends and collegues( Roman anyone?) are celebrities does that make them incapable of doing horrible things?

    Exactly!

Just because you know someone doesn’t mean they are a good person. Doesn’t mean they are incapable of hurting/abusing others.

Whoopi is an idiot. The flack she’s getting is well deserved.

  37. Mia says:

Tea Partiers aren’t racist, it’s about fiscal responsibility and low taxes which welcomes men, women, minorities, gays, everyone and anyone who wants to come to the party. It’s also not beholden to GOP, by the way. Just as tired about overspending, tax hikes, and the massive and rapidly expanding government from both major parties.

Mel Gibson is a racist. Plain and simple. And after Whoopie didn’t understand rape of a minor by a pedophile, I was through considering her worthy of discussing issues too.

Her joke about criticisms of her dress being so harsh “hey, you’d think I hit Rihanna” were so shortly after the beating that was too much for me too.

  38. Lenore says:

I guess it’s hard for all these people – Jodie when she defended him re: sugartits, and now Whoopi – to acknowledge the simple fact that the person they thought they knew may in fact have hated them, on some level, for what they were.

For what it’s worth, my view is that Mel Gibson is probably on the surface, to his friends, on a good day, a thoroughly likeable chap. He is aware of the modern world and its acceptance of many races, views, sexualities, religions, etc. On the surface, Mel probably thinks he’s a tolerant guy because he has a gay female friend and isn’t CONSTANTLY spewing hate speech. When nothing is bothering him, when there is nothing he needs to blame anyone for, he hasn’t got anything against Jews, Blacks, Gays, Latinos, or any other group he’s now on record maligning.

But the fact is, he was raised in a different environment – not tolerant Hollywood, but in the home of a bigoted anti-Semite who apparently filled little Mel’s head with hate. Dinner chez Gibson, when Mel was a tyke, probably involved wolfing down a steak while his old man ranted on about how the Jews were responsible for all the war in the world and how all the blacks were out to rape the white wimmin and all the Latinos were out to take his job. So little Mel internalised all this hate. It’s ingrained.

Grown-up Mel may have learned that this gay or that Jew was actually quite a nice fella and nothing to be scared of, and he may have learned that to express views the way his daddy did would not get him anywhere in LA; he may even have been deeply uncomfortable about the chasm between the beliefs he felt to be true, deep down in his little white bones, and the new, tolerant lifestyle he was slipping into. He may even have externally rejected the old beliefs his daddy gave him.

But deep down, they’ve not gone anywhere. They’re just waiting for a drop of whisky or a perceived injustice to disturb the surface of the black scummy water where they reside, to let them belch out like foetid swamp gas. Nothing gets a racist, misogynist, homophobe going like a little booze to loosen the tongue or a little bruise to make him feel hurt, make him find SOMEONE to blame, because when your ego is as massive and fragile as that, you sure as hell don’t dare blame yourself. Why bother when you can blame the Jews? Or the mother of your love-child, even?

So yeah, Whoopi probably doesn’t think Mel’s racist. With her, he never has been, and she’s thinking, “But I’M black and he was always nice to ME!” Yeah, Whoopi. You saw the good, tolerant side of Mel, like a water-lily floating on a cesspool. What’s on these tapes is evidence of the shit beneath.

  39. Snarf says:

The hand wringing over Mel’s tirades is becoming tiresome.

He’s a bigoted jerk and a drunk, we knew he was a bigoted jerk and a drunk. Why is this so shocking?

  40. HotPockets says:

    I hate the view. period.

  41. kim says:

Until Mel calls her a f**king N**ger than he is not a racist in her opinion

  42. Gabriela says:

why the fuck is she standing up for him? is not the first time he’s ever done it (and he’s done it sober) and anyway it doesn’t excuse him. so come on!!!
i’m not afro descendent, jew or mexican, but i was terribly offended with what he said and i’d never stand up for such a drunk abuser!

  43. Big Whoop says:

You removed my post for pointing out that calling someone a racist for his beliefs actually proves who is the real racist.

  44. Eden says:

    @Lenore- THANK YOU!!
I agree with everything you said so well.

It’s all about a total unwillingness to take responsibility for himself, so when shit happens that he thinks should not be happening or shit doesn’t happen that he thinks should be happening, he has to blame someone or something rather than take a good look at his choices and the beliefs that led to his choices.
In the 2nd tape he begins by saying “look what you are making me say to you”.
We all have rageful and angry thoughts but it is the choice not to justify them or blame others for them or just not to say them that makes the difference.

He was bred with hatred of “the other” and it is impossible to hate and not be full of self loathing and all the hate spewed onto others.

He is also a total narcissist so if someone(Whoopi) feeds his sense of himself in a way that makes him feel good than they are useful and acceptable on some level.
If someone threatens his sense of himself or makes him think or do things he is uncomfortable with, he attacks and blames others for his discomfort instead of owning what was there beneath the surface.

Believe me, if Whoopi had ever come up against him he would have spewed his poison all over her too.

When you squeeze an orange, orange juice comes out because it was what was in there before the squeeze..
When we get squeezed by life, what comes out is what was already there..no-one and no circumstance can make us say or do what is not there already.
There is no excuse for what he says.
Booze just loosened up his pipes and
if he does have a mental disorder I wonder if it’s induced by the trauma and hate his mind is so full of.
It would cause anyone to lose their sanity & grip on reality.
He is a sad, small and lost man.

  45. Big Whoop says:

Perhaps Whoopi is friends with Mel is because he is a nice guy when he is sober. My step dad was a mean drunk, but most people who knew him only when he was sober couldn’t believe he was a mean violent a$$#ole. If Mel stopped drinking and got some anger management counseling, he could be a nice person from what some people who know him say. But many commentators would still vilify him just because of his religion.

  46. hihat says:

I was about to send Jodie Foster an email — assuming I could find her website — asking why she would continue to associate with this psycho, when I discovered that the studio that was backing her current movie starring Gibson, “The Beaver,” has suspended production on the picture. Good! I presume only Mel’s demented father would buy a ticket to see the film at this point…

  47. Big Whoop says:

This site and others have attacked Mel ever since he came up with making the movie Passion of the Christ. I don’t remember Mel getting into any trouble before thousands of people protested against him personally and called him names for wanting to tell us what his religion believes to be true, some even tried to sue him into poverty and stop that movie from being made. I don’t remember seeing that movie condone violence towards women and the theme did not condone violence in any way, it was actually the condemnation of violence for financial gain. Obviously the people who sued him believe in making money off other peoples suffering for their beliefs. Some other people did that in WWII and rightfully were vilified, not the people who were being prosecuted.

  48. JD says:

    Whoopi,Whoopi, Whoopi!
My grand mother would say,”sober mans thoughts drunk mans words”.

  49. Viggo says:

So Whoopi just negated her whole point.According to her it’s ok to pardon a drunk, because they say bone – headed things, and it’s also ok to pardon a person who has all their faculties, yet says racist things ? I don’t get her, it’s like she has no self-respect when it comes to men.

  50. Eden says:

Just to add one more thing..
I do believe that Mel, under the surface is a kind and good man and experiences as much pain from his hatred as the people who are on the other end of it.
He blames the reason for his pain and anger on everyone and everything instead of owning it and seeing that under the surface of darkness there is light. Just like everyone else.
Maybe Whoopi sees that goodness in him and if that is where her comment arose from, I give her credit.

  51. I Choose Me says:

I’m all for giving people the benefit of the doubt but she’s gotta stop defending the indefensible. While its true that no one is ALL bad and I get that she doesn’t want to believe that a person she knows and likes is capable of despicable acts that does not negate the facts.

Fact: Roman Polanski raped a minor. Full stop. Not sorta rape. RAPE! She asked him not to. He went ahead anyway.

Fact: Mel Gibson is a mysognistic, abusive, racist pig. This is based on the evidence. Re: his previous drunken racist rant and the just released portion of the tape. I hope he gets help but I also want him to reap the consequences of his actions.

    Get a clue Whoopie.

    @bizzy. I think I love you. 😀

  52. Seancal says:

@mia On a tangent, while I 100% agree that not all tea-party members are racist it is very hard to make that distinction when several key tea party leaders are. I live in DC and see tea party protesters every day, and if they don’t want to be called racist, they should put away all the nooses and calling for senators to be lynched. If large numbers of their leadership and protesters use that kind of language, then I’m sorry to say that they will all be painted with that brush (regardless of what individual members think or believe)

    Some examples:
Tea party leader Mark Williams calling President Obama a “Indonesian Muslim” and a “welfare thug” I mean, that’s pretty racialized rhetoric, right? Or,
the story about Tea Party candidate for Governor in New York who sent e-mails picturing the President dressed as a pimp and featuring a group of African tribesman performing a traditional dance, which he referred to as the “Obama Inauguration Rehearsal?” Or the folks over at freerepublic.com calling Malia, “typical ghetto trash,” and a “whore” whose mother likes to entertain her by “making monkey sounds?” The list goes on and on

  53. lucy2 says:

Big Whoop – it has nothing to do with his religion, and everything to do with the fact that he REPEATEDLY has exposed himself to be bigoted against people based on their race and religion.
A movie he made years ago has nothing to do with him allegedly abusing the mother of his child and throwing around horrible racial slurs and threats.
I’m sorry, but none of the things you’ve mentioned are an excuse for that sort of behavior, especially when it’s a completely unrelated situation.

Lenore & Eden, I very much agree with your posts. It’s very sad that he was likely taught hatred, and even sadder that as an adult, he never realized how wrong that was.

  54. e-non says:

it’s about an unfathomable uncontrollabe hate; deep, deep within him that he’s been carrying his whole life. and i’m linking it to that crazy assed father of his and his extreme religious beliefs. the old man had to be one mean son of a bitch to live with.

and that hatred is reflected in his physical appearance too. he was one of the hottest guys on film; but over the years that hatred and bile has taken its toll on him.

  55. Jules says:

Whoopie lost me at “it’s not rape rape” she doesn’t believe we landed on the moon. Now this? Bring back Rosie.

  56. lena says:

yeah Whoopi, I get it, as long as it’s not rape-rape by a pack of n*ggers it’s okay.

    *sarcasm*

  57. Lady Lurker says:

I wonder what we’d hear Oksana say when she didn’t know she was being taped.

I wonder what we’d hear anyone in the midst of a breakup say when they didn’t know they were on tape.

Why didn’t WME drop Charlie Sheen when he called Denise Richards and N— on her voicemail?

    So many questions…

  58. Katija says:

Normally I like Whoopi. But has she never heard the old saying, “A drunk tongue speaks a sober mind?”

  59. WHOOPI-STFU says:

Who really cares what WHOOPI says!?

  60. RHONYC says:

way to make a stand against ‘abuse & violence against women’ douchette!

    boo.

  61. K.B. Stone says:

Whoopi Goldberg has always been a f*cking idiot. She’s not a bad person but she hates her black skin and slobs on the knobs of anyone with a white pecker for her to suck. She’s a mess. Mel’s a waste of space. And all those who defend either of them drink my toilet water and call it gourmet.

  62. mai tai says:

    He’s a drunk, anti-semitic racist A-hole.
There’s no defence for this jerks behaviour. He hits a woman while she’s holding his baby in her arms? He needs to be arrested and have someone his own size pick on him in prison.

  63. Gigohead says:

I wish his bipolar would be addressed. He does admit he’s bipolar a few years ago and CLEARLY he is off his meds. His ex says why isn’t he on medication and he just goes off. My brother is bipolar and has said the WORST things to his ex wife and to me and became abusive. Yet, when he is on his meds, its like he forgot all what was said. I have forgiven him and I understand now the ravages of this disease. Wish folks would be speaking more about this and urge Mel to get mental help.

  64. Marianne says:

The one thing I find astonishing about that video, is at the end she says ” I don’t think he was drunk during this rant” (or something close to that effect). Well if he’s not drunk (which makes it all ok in your book) then what “excuse” does he have for saying things like ” I don’t care if a pack of N*ggers rape you”? I mean seriously. How can you possibly defend that?

  65. CathyT says:

Mel’s problems go far, far beyond using racial epithets. Like Oksana says, he needs to be on medication. He also needs to stay sober. On the latest tape he admits to being “drunk and disorderly.”

  66. YvetteW says:

Whoopie’s boyfriend serenaded her in blackface. (Yes, good old Ted Danson). She is not the spokesperson for what constitutes racist a-hole.

  67. Henriette says:

I kind of agree with Whoopi here. My late friend was a violent, vitriolic drunk but the kindest and most intellectually nuanced man when sober. Drunks say and do evil things but I have seen that these things don’t necessarily lurk anywhere while they’re sober.

  68. wtf says:

    LMBAO!!!
My inner id is a nympho too!!! She never says racist hateful things, she LOVES everybody, which is why I only drink around friends. really hot friends.

  69. Kelly says:

    You are what you do.

Deliberately make racist statements, and you’re a racist. Have sex with nonconsenting 13 year olds, and you’re a pedophile.

    It’s not rocket science.

Im always astonished and disgusted by the number of people who speak and act around these (inevitably male) arseholes with a view to their own careers and money making opportunities, hence the pathetic lack of reaction from most people in the industry. PATHETIC! Shame on you. You know who you are.

  70. Shay says:

Mel Gibson shouldn’t even be a topic of conversation of The View. Irrespective of his public profile, his relationships should be considered private. So to minimise stepping on viewer’s toes, hosts shouldn’t be discussing what are personal issues, because that way they risk ostacising viewers, like Whoopi has done.
Mel is so much more than just a ‘drunk’ who says stupid things. He is a very damaged (possibly deranged when drunk) man. He practically admitted to hitting Oksana, further telling her that she deserved it.

  71. Rex says:

What Mel did in the (assumed) privacy of his home does not affect me at all. However, the New Black Panther’s racist rants affect all of us. Their violant racist actions in public will incite other violence – and voter intimidation. This is the true racism that should be addressed – not Mel.

  72. Darla says:

Before I started watching the view, I thought whoopi was OK; but the more I watch the show, the more I dislike her and see that she is just a depraved and ignorant soul in dire need of help — and I am a black person with these views. She has no morals, values, principals or brains and is always on the side of not just what is morally wrong but also ethically wrong. She tries to come off like she knows everything about everything, but every time she opens her mouth, she lets everyone know just how ignorant she is. Let her keep talking, before long she is going to find herself in a situation that won’t be fixable just like what has happened to so many others.

  73. AA Guy says:

Much as one might want to smack him in the head and toss him off the roof, Gibson is still an alcoholic. This, of course, means he’s a wreck inside (hell, just listen to the tapes). Sure, he’s an asshole, but our disgust is peanuts compaired to the way he’s going to feel once he’s on the wagon.
Love to be a fly on the wall at those AA meetings.

  74. Mr Wong says:

Whoopi poor Whoopi i agree with you Mel is awesome and i know iv said stuff against white people when i was drunk but i dont hate you white people.

  75. Carol hodges says:

When we are in our own homes we can say what we like. We do not know who is listening or taping us. Mel Gibson said what he felt like in his own home rather he was drinking, drunk or whatever! He was just “keeping it real”. And for Goldberg to say he is not a racist because he has been in her home and around her kids—-so what whooping “it is what it is”. He has done this to many times. He is what he is, an old 54 year old who could not get his ex-girl to comply to his wishes and all he has done and said is very disturbing. I hope he get what is coming to him he is not god you know.

  76. Shag says:

She’s part of “the club” and most of them just defend each other. Was she asked about the statement he made to his ex about, hoping that the gets raped by a “pack of “n——“? What did she think about that one.

  77. Motor mouth says:

What a way to go whoopi. Why are you on the view? When others are speaking and giving their opinion you are sitting in your chair rolling your eyes for others to take your side. You are such a turn off for some of us black folks. To say that Mel it not a racist—you should really fall out of your chair! Always remember ” it is what it is” You should have shut up on this topic!

  78. Two Sides To A Coin says:

Do I like Mel Gibson? No, he has demonstrated himself to be a serious jerk on more than one occasion.
    But seriously…

Has anyone considered that one or both of these tapes are fakes?

First, if he had repeatedly punched his wife in the face and broke her teeth, the Police would have already been involved. A bruised up face and broken teeth are not something you easily hide, and if she wanted to nail him in a media spectacle, she wouldn’t bother to hide the damage. She would have made sure the Police were called, and she would have had her face in the papers. As she did not, it looks like a publicity frame up.

If the Police had been involved, then there would be no need for a tape. Mel would still have been run through the media.

But, if she was trying to set him up for a media scandal that would let her have the baby, and punitive damages, the tape(s) were necessary.

In the recording (which I have listened to very carefully), she sounds very practiced, like she was reading from a script, and more importantly, she is substantially calmer that the man who sounds like Mel Gibson in the recordings.

The timing on the responses was off, and in fact it sounds like it was two separate conversations. Like she recorded his side first, and then added her voiceover after. In this day of digital media, it would be very hard to prove that it was altered.

In addition, the audio recording of the man who sounds like Mel Gibson was not consistent with how Mel Gibson’s voice would sound recorded over a phone. If she didn’t record it over a phone than it sounds even more phony.

I think Oskana is using the public impression of Mel to her own ends, and she is making most people dance to her tune and Mel (who despite being a serious Jerk) is unfairly getting run through the ringer on this one.

I think everyone is going overboard and we should wait for more facts before preparing a hangman’s noose for Mel’s career.

  79. Joan says:

I think people have this one wrong. This woman went with Mel Gibson when he was married, and she didn’t mind having him divorce his wife of 32 years who he has 8 kids with. She was just fine with that. And, with Mel Gibson being married for 32 years, he didn’t have a prenup so he lost half of his fortune. After the divorce, they say he is still worth almost 1 trillion dollars, so he paid a ton of money in the divorce.

His girlfriend used him to record a record, to start a singing career that didn’t take off. She recorded him, which if she loved him, she would not have wanted to ruin his career. She claims he abused her, yet did not call the police, and then she reported it six months later. His Russian girlfriend also asked him for money not to give the tapes out. She refused 20 million in exchange for the tapes. She’s a gold digger who doesn’t love him. He is old fashioned, he isn’t used to his wife wearing revealing clothes. His wife didn’t have fake breasts and fake hair, she was a modest person who stayed out of the limelight. He was angry, he reacted, he yelled at her. It happens. His new girlfriend did not realize that Gibson old school, he doesn’t like his women running around in tight, short dresss, like he said. And, how do we know she wasn’t looking around for another guy in Hollywood. If she really loved him, she would never have released those tapes, his wife of 32 years who gave him 8 children loved him and would never have done such a thing. Yes, he said racial things in the heat of the moment, commenting that his girlfriend might get rapped and so on. I think the girlfriend is the bad person and you can’t blame him for getting mad when she asked him for 30 million dollars in exchange for those tapes. He didn’t marry her, she was after money so she set him up.

  80. roberta says:

    Whoopi,
I think you said the truth. You know Mel. I am sorry you are getting so much crap.I am getting very tierd of all the fuss any one that is human makes mistakes by there words. As you said yourself you who has never done this throw the first stone.

  81. Sher says:

He said it in the tapes= you know what buttons to push of course she was patient and kind she knew she was recording = what is the name oh yeah gold digger

  82. Sher says:

Whoopie – luv ya and only you get to the meat of the matter he is not a racist he is someone who had his buttons pushed, it was pre meditated. He works all his life – she hooks up with him and hopes to consume his work, his life and his history = she has no talent trying to take his oh yes does this make me admire her acting abilities while taping him surreptiously – I thought you had to be told you were being recorded but apparently that doesn’t apply when you are from another country.

  83. Donald E. Hull says:

You go girl! BRAVO to you for speaking your mind and having your say despite what anyone else says… Let me say it again, “YOU GO GIRL!”

  84. Fatima says:

I really think Mel Gibson is victim of his own vice, but I do not think he is racist or mean person. He made a huge mistake leaving his wife or letting her go because I believe she was the only person who kept him grounded and truly loved him for who he is rather than his celebrity/money. I feel very sorry that such a talented man is loosing his footing.

  85. Two Sides To A Coin says:

I think his wife after all these years, and a divorce, can speak more to his character than the gold digger who is running him through the courts right now.

“Gibson, 54, did get some support from his estranged wife, Robyn, who filed a brief declaration stating that the actor-director had never physically abused her or her children. Mel and Robyn Gibson have seven children together, only one of whom is younger than 18 years old.” – msn.com

  86. B. Harper says:

You don’t abandon friends because they do something stupid or act like an ass drunk. The problem with our society is that we like to watch celebrities fall and we get off on that. It’s sad because they bring us joy and help take our minds off of the atrocities that we constantly hear about on the news. The world is a horrible place and there are horrible people that occupy it, but we shouldn’t judge people on a single incident, especially when someone’s mind is effected by alcohol. The worst thing about this is that you often start to believe what people say about you, so if we continue to call Mel a racist; he could start acting like one. If he really was a racist he wouldn’t have any non-white friends and he sure wouldn’t have starred beside any of them. Save your condemnation for the people who are out there murdering innocent mothers and daughters in warzones, truly despicable people who take advantage of the weak and abuse the trust of the innocent. Mel has enough on his plate without being hated for something he said, in a moment when he couldn’t think straight.
