Michael Douglas, 65, has a throat tumor and is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation to treat it. His publicist issued a brief statement to People Magazine confirming the diagnosis, along with the fact that Douglas is “very optimistic.”

Michael Douglas has a tumor in his throat and will undergo radiation and chemotherapy.

The Academy Award-winning actor’s treatment is scheduled to last eight weeks.

The 65-year-old Douglas says he expects to make a full recovery. He told People magazine in a statement Monday he’s “very optimistic.” His publicist’s assistant, Eli Barach, confirmed his condition to The Associated Press.

The actor is outside the United States, publicist Allen Burry said Monday, declining to give his location or where he would be treated.

Douglas and his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, purchased a house on the island of Bermuda nearly a decade ago, and Zeta-Jones said they planned to raise their two children there.

Douglas won an Oscar for “Wall Street” and appears this fall in the sequel, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”

I hope that Douglas is ok and that he recovers soon. He’s been through so much lately and was reportedly devastated by his oldest son recently being sentenced to five years in prison for drug trafficking and possession. The National Enquirer reported this week that Michael was “worried sick” about his son Cameron’s safety in prison. Cameron ratted out other drug dealers in exchange for a lighter sentence, and according to the Enquirer he’s been “branded a ‘snitch’ and may be harmed while in prison.” Michael is said to be “worried sick that vicious inmates will make an example of his son for identifying his dealers… Michael is praying for his son’s well being.” Now a lot of people are praying for Michael’s. He has a lot of good support around him, including his wife of ten years, Catherine Zeta Jones (who still seems very much in love with him), and their two children, Dylan, 10, and Carys, 7. Douglas’ dad, the legendary Kirk Douglas, is also still kicking at 93. Get well soon, Michael!

I hope he’s able to pull through. I’m sure his young children are really frightened for him.

This sure is sucky news 🙁 Romancing the Stone was one of those childhood movies I watched over and over. Even though he was far too old for me, I’ve always loved Michael Douglas, and a lot of it was his voice- I still think it’s incredibly sexy. Hope he gets well soon.

  4. émer says:

Wow I didn’t expect that. I really respect him especially since he didn’t sign the Polanski petition and didn’t defend this old pedophile.

    I hope he recovers quickly.

  5. SallyJay says:

  8. Juice in LA says:

Does anyone know if he was a smoker? I don’t recall ever seeing him smoke. Also the local news is reporting he is expected to make a full recovery, so that is good- but weird. I thought Throat cancer was like third in line as the worst ones (melanoma, stomach then throat)?

I hope they caught it very early.

  9. Catherine says:

Best wishes for a full recovery.

  10. lucy2 says:

Juice, I believe at one point both he and CZJ smoked, but I don’t know if they ever quit or not. I hope so.

Best wishes to him, hopefully his treatments work and he is able to make a fully recovery.

@Juice: Pancreatic is a death sentence – usually a quick one. Esophageal cancer is also very deadly, as is stomach cancer, and I’m sure several others. Many cancers, such as skin cancer, can be treatable if caught early enough. Cancers like pancreatic and ovarian are very rarely caught early because they don’t present with symptoms until they’re very far along. I’m not an oncologist, but I work as an xray tech in a hospital and this is some of the info I’ve picked up along the way.

I think I read that Michael Douglas is a heavy cigar smoker.

Best wishes to M.D. and everyone who could wishes for any reason. Peace.

  13. lambchops says:

they are both smokers. please stop smoking for your kids’ sake.

  14. gg says:

I still think Michael Douglas is such a cutie. Will watch about anything he’s in. I’ve had cancer and it’s just so scary.

Sending good thoughts to him and his family.

  17. that rabbit over there says:

when people are diagnosed with cancer, we should wish them well. however it should be noted that he is a heavy smoker. smoking is risky and not worth it. do you want to be battling a serious illness you brought on by smoking? come on now.

World of light surrounds you! Each of us pays now, this minute fraction of their energy and love to you Michael! To destroy the “Black Ball” to split it with our love, to split in the sand and changed to “Ray of Light” ………. Believe in His and our strength, we are together, mentally sending you my good-particle energy!
Just do not doubt our victory together! …….

I too was treated for stage 4 throat cancer 7 yrs ago. I feel for Mike, the treatments of chemo and radiation for the cancer is very painful. My throat swelled up and I was unable to eat, not that I wanted to. I lost 55lbs and had to take liquids through a feeding tube in my stomach. For 5 days a weeks for7 weeks my wife led me around like a little child from our bed at home to the hospital for treatment and then back home to bed until the next day. I looked forward to the weekends when I could spend 2 days in bed. I was so sick at the end of my treatment the doctors canceled my last chemo for fear it would kill me. I received my last radation treatment on my 50th birthday. It took me 6 months to recover, I ate scrambled eggs with melted cheddar cheese and drank Macdonalds Choclate shakes. Slowley I managed to put weight back on and started to feel human again.Mike has a hard road ahead but he will beat it. He needs to listen to his doctors and do everything they tell him.
