Joshua Jackson’s life lesson in Nuvo Mag: “You can’t be late for Germans”

jj4

I have to admit, I’ve been thinking about Joshua Jackson all week, and I have no idea why. He’s not one of my usual fantasy guys, and I don’t think I’ve even seen him in anything recently, and it’s not like he was even at the Emmys for Fringe or anything. Not that I watch Fringe. I really don’t. I don’t want to have my heart broken by another sci-fi TV series, like Lost or The X-Files, both of which I was addicted to at various times. So why the Joshua love? Some weird quirk of my mind, I guess. But I’m glad for it – because this boy is adorable, and he’s actually kind of interesting. He’s the cover boy for the Fall issue of Nuvo Magazine (it’s a Canadian thing), and some interview excerpts were just released:

Joshua Jackson is in the mood to muse. He’s got a lot on his mind—the deep meaning-of-life sort of stuff that sci-fi geeks typically ponder at 2 a.m., after smoking too much weed. Except it’s early on a summer evening, and we’re sipping sparkling water in the penthouse garden of the Soho House on West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, when the phone rings and Jackson suddenly notices the time

His live-in girlfriend of four years, German movie star Diane Kruger, is on the phone, and he’s due at a screening of her latest film, Inhale. “Hi, love, can I have 15 more minutes?” he asks.

It’s clear the answer is no. “Such is life,” he tells me. “You can’t be late for Germans. Doesn’t work.”

Relationships come first now for Jackson, star of the hit TV science-fiction series Fringe, who is also well known for playing wisecracking teen Pacey on Dawson’s Creek. “That was a falling-down point for me with women in the past,” says the actor, sporting a scruffy beard, jeans, and checkered shirt. “My work is so hit-and-miss, you get caught up in this idea, when it’s here, everything else goes to second best. With Diane, I’ve made sure she stays in the premier position. And all of a sudden I’ve realized, oh look, I can have a life and do my job. This is really nice.”

JJ on environmental disasters, like the BP oil spill: “Pick your myth—we’re either Pandora or Prometheus or, frankly maybe Icarus. We are in a tipping-point era, and we have to either catch up to our abilities, culturally, or some massive global catastrophe will befall us. The planet will live on, but we’re going to make it more difficult for us to survive.”

On awards shows: “You have to be there for hours, oh my sweet Jesus. If it looks glamorous on TV, it’s almost always boring because it’s good for the cameras and not good to be at. Just think about the Academy Awards as a four-hour variety show with f-cking commercial breaks. It is impossible. (But) to go to an awards show where you’re nominated and then actually win something is a totally different experience. All of a sudden it’s the coolest thing in the world.”

[From Nuvo Magazine (additional excerpts courtesy of LaineyGossip)]

“You can’t be late for Germans” is my new favorite quote. I want a tattoo of it. Joshua should get one too. Does it play into German stereotypes of efficiency? Sure. But have you ever known a German who wasn’t on time? Right. As far as the stuff about environmental disasters, etc – I like that he thinks about this stuff, and he sounds intelligent. Smart enough to walk the razor’s edge of being preachy and walk away unscathed. Well done.

  2. Bopa says:

Fringe took a while to build up but now it’s on a steady pace. You should check it out, it’s not as much like X-files as people assume.

  3. bridge says:

when did ol’ pacey get this hot? sweet bejeesus. i have a new favourite thin-lipped man, sorry George! But you are teetering on the edge of age, right?

  4. xxodettexx says:

  5. Gabby says:

LOVE HIM!! And for some really weird reason, whenever I look at him, I think of George Clooney. He could totally pass as George’s son or brother.

  6. Me says:

    He’s adorable.

  7. SolitaryAngel says:

    LOVE him!

  8. mslewis says:

Now, here is a sexy man!! You can keep your scruffy guys, I’ll take Mr. Jackson, please. And, thank you very much!!

It’s so sweet that he seems to be in a really happy relationship. That’s really difficult when both actors are busy but I think he and Diane really work at it. Good for them.

  9. Praise St. Angie! says:

Fringe IS good…Kaiser, check it out, you’d probably like it.

that quote reminds me of one I heard from one of my friend’s grandmother, who is also German. (still lives there, I think…)

She didn’t laugh at some joke and when asked why, she said “it’s not funny being German”.

  10. Jennifer says:

Yeah, I’m married to a German. He’s right. It’s taken me 20 years to convince my husband being one minute late ISN’T the end of the world.

  11. Katie says:

I have loved him since Dawson’s Creek and continue to love him. I pretty much gave Fringe a chance because of him and it’s good, the 2nd season was really good. Also, he and Diane seem really cute together.

  12. lilred says:

Hard to believe that Charlie from the Mighty Ducks movies grew up this HOT.

  13. LeManda says:

I’ve been in love with this boy since Mighty Ducks. I only watched Dawson’s Creek for him and also tuned in to Fringe because of him. But I stayed with Fringe because of so much more. Highly recommend; great stories, actors and very smart concepts.

Oh man would you ever make my Hot Guy Friday dreams come true with some more JJ…and a little more JGL would be very nice too 🙂

  14. Samigirl says:

He looks fantastic in that bottom pic. New candidate for hot guy friday?

  15. Jen Wind says:

Love Fringe and Love him! I think the man that plays his father in Fringe and he make that show, plus there stories are really good!!

  16. Brooke says:

A dear friend of mine is German-speaking Swiss (possibly the only culture even more promptness-obsessed) and grows extremely perturbed if anyone is even one minute late for any engagement, no matter how casual. I attempted to make a joke about it when we first became friends (What’s the problem with being on time? No one’s there to appreciate it.) at which he did not laugh, and instead launched into a lecture about why it is so offensive (i.e., it shows you cannot manage your time, therefore you cannot manage anything else, and that you are disrespectful and lazy). Suffice it to say I have made serious efforts and managed to be timely ever since, not only for him but also for the rest of my life, and it in fact it has had a positive impact!

  17. danielle says:

Maybe I need to date a German next? Seriously, people not being on time irk me too. My bf’s not bad, but his friends are TERRIBLE!

  18. Cletus says:

IT’S NOT FUNNY BEING GERMAN is hilarious. My mother is German. God hep meh.

  19. KsGirl says:

He’s right about Germans. And I have to say, as someone without a drop of German blood in me, I deeply admire their timekeeping skills.

  20. poster 1 says:

Germans are on time? Hrm…perhaps the family I am in is not 100%. 😛

  21. Parisienne says:

There are Millions of Germans who are not punctual. Actually, I am not German and I am the only one who is never late in my nearly all-German circle.

  22. Cleo says:

Why do I get the feeling that people show up late when they are meeting a German just to fuck with them – you know, give them a false sense of superiority and well, just to fuck with them.

  23. Mairead says:

Ah yes, but they will enjoy themselves with ruthless German efficiency when they get there 😉 I love Germans, I do.

I know what you mean though, as a country Ireland seems to have a deep, almost genetic, aversion to being on time. But I know many extremely punctual Irish people (I’m not one of them). I don’t know how the Germans who live here cope 😆

  24. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

Love Fringe! I am so pissed that I missed the last episode from last season!

The only thing I do not like about Fringe, is right when it gets super exciting, they go on hiatus for like 3 months! It is really irritating!

  25. Praise St. Angie! says:

“as a country Ireland seems to have a deep, almost genetic, aversion to being on time.”

AHA! so, it’s my heritage that’s to blame…thanks, Mairead!

  26. Fishlips says:

Its good to know about Germans and punctuality, since hubby and I are moving to Germany in February. This could spell disaster, as hubby is Mexican, and I am Filipina. Both of us are from cultures in which its normal, almost expected, to arrive late. In fact, everyone shows up to parties at least an hour late. LOL

  27. wordsMatter says:

Einstein was a German-Swiss who figured out/discovered the special and general theories of relativity.
Just thought I’d throw that in there.

  28. Mistral says:

I don’t see the hot, but he’s a smart Canadian boy! Good for him on snagging a babe who totally out-babes him. His comment about not being late for a German is very cute.

  29. I Choose Me says:

LOVE HIM! He expresses himself so well. Intelligent, witty and self-aware without being narcissistic. I feel like hot guy Friday’s come early. 😀

@LeManda – you can never have enough JGL.

  30. Kali says:

I can’t get enough Joshua Jackson. That voice, the look, he’s smart and he’s Canadian. I’ve adored him since Dawson’s Creek and he’s great in Fringe.

  31. Sally says:

    PACEY!

Good luck, Fishlips! I am also from a culture where it is acceptable/expected to be late, and I have a very German (by descent) boyfriend. I am routinely late and let’s say.. it’s not something we talk about anymore 😛

  32. Ruffian9 says:

“IT’S NOT FUNNY BEING GERMAN is hilarious. My mother is German”

    Ditto!

Funny thing, my mom (100% German), is a complete ditz and often late…I’m half German & HATE being late. I also hate being too early… It’s hard to be me!

  33. Red says:

How many actors out there actually know about Icarus, or Prometheus? Joshua is fabulous in Fringe, and a damn fine actor. Plus he’s actually in a steady, seemingly sane relationship with – okay, a German, fellow actress. Good for him. I’d take him any day of the week, and all day Sunday. *sigh*. Good looking, sexy and respectful? There’s only one in Hollywood and it’s Joshua Jackson.

  34. Shaniqua says:

EUW. What does Diane see in him?

  35. Arvedia says:

He totally looks like Paul Thomas Anderson (who I think is so hot).

  36. Fishlips says:

    LOL…thanks, Sally!

  37. runpaceyrun says:

Joshua Jackson is the most GORGEOUS man on the planet! FRINGE is AWESOME and is the best show on tv. What an absolute pleasure it is to watch him on tv again. He is hot, sexy and truely a beautiful man. I absolutely adore him…..always have….always will.

  38. Eonyk says:

Love Josh, so thanks for the write-up. He grew up so incredibly HOT.
