Willow Smith, Jada and Will’s 9 year-old daughter, recorded a pop single

For the most part, I give Willow Smith a pass on just about everything. She’s the nine-year-old daughter of Will and Jada Smith, and to be honest, I wish I was as cool as Willow right at this very moment, not even back when I was nine. Willow’s style has been analyzed and over-analyzed, and once again, I don’t blame Willow for being obsessed with style – I blame her parents for never telling her “no” and for hiring Willow her own stylist.

Anyway, Willow is a singer! She just released her first single “Whip My Hair” and it is… honestly, it’s not horrible, considering she’s 9 years old. I could actually see dancing to this after a few drinks, and I’m not kidding. Here you go:

According to Necole Bitchie’s sources, “Willow is now taking her talents to the studio and it’s not half bad. Word around town is President Carter has given her a cosign and is allegedly bringing her aboard the Roc Nation ship. Reminds me of Rihanna and Ester Dean rolled in one. I think your readers will approve.” Damn, she got signed by Jay Z? Rihanna better watch her ass.

Thanks to Dlisted for the tip!

This is simply unhealthy for a child of 9. What is the matter with her parents?
It is difficult enough to grow up with boundaries in a celebrity parent household, much less with all of this Smith family nepotism.
Let her be a kid, for God’s sake!

  2. omondieu says:

Hey, it beats Miley any day.

  3. scotchy says:

we are a world in decline, when this kind of crap gets a pass.

  4. whitedaisy says:

    Omondieu,
She is only 9, give her time.

  5. Po says:

Just a question. If you accomplish your career goals, get people dressing like you, and have your own team of employees by nine, what do you have to look forward to? I didn’t listen to the single and her talent, or lack thereof, really isn’t all that important. I just wonder what these kids are going to do to occupy themselves by 15. What happens when you peak before you even reach double digits? If her parents weren’t celebrities I could understand them not getting how this might not be a great idea, but Will and Jada have to know that this girl is going to be all over the place by 20 if they try and make her a star now.

  6. Po says:

Oh, and when I said all over the place I didn’t mean she would be a huge star. I meant she would probably be a mess.

  7. ch says:

do these kids ever play ?

  8. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Sounds like a pop song you would hear from someone much older. I love it. Its not nasty its good for kids. Its fantastic and that fam is sooo talented. Alot of kids are creative. I was very creative kid but my parents didn’t nurture my gifts and now I am broke and hate where I live which is with them and I am miserable. We all are.

  9. aenflex says:

ITA with yall saying it’s kinda premature. When do the kids get to be kids, and play, and just worry about school and friends?
    Willow sure is cute though.

Speak for youself @loveangelina. I’m fine. And I didn’t have a single when I was 9, and most of the time I’m broke. Life is sooo much more than money.

  10. Johnthing says:

    HORRIBLE!

  11. mln says:

@ Po you put the nail on the head. It seems really unnecessary and I am not commenting on the quality of the single. These kids are going to have a million opportunities as Wil Smith’s children so why not let them be kids for a few years. It’s not just that they are being creative ( I love her hair and clothes ) but that they are like little arrogant movies stars with all the trappings and that isn’t healthy, kids need boundaries and to hear the word no sometimes.

  12. texasmom says:

Well, it has the world’s stupidest hook, but otherwise not bad. But I agree — what’s the rush? She can do this when she’s 20.

  13. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL aenflex, well I take comfort in the fact that your happy with being broke. I am happy when others are happy. Being broke doesn’t work for me, my family, or my wardrobe. Its a recession things will pick eventually.

  14. lucy2 says:

I just don’t get it – either the parents are pushing the kids into the biz, or can’t say no. They don’t need the money or fame, and it’s totally possible to let your kids explore their creative and do cool stuff without mass marketing them to the world.
If I were a celeb, I would try to make my kids lives as normal as possible. If they wanted to be in show biz I’d say sure…when you’re old enough to understand all the good AND bad parts of fame and fortune.

  15. a says:

she wears layers and layers of clothes vs. spears and miley!

i hope that fun look continues to her teens.

  16. nnn says:

She is emulating Rihanna from clothes, to sound, to music to the way of singing….sacry.

  17. GreenGinger says:

Honestly, listening to the song made me cringe in embarrassment for her. It it awful and does nothing to change my opinion of her and her brother as entitled kids who have way too little humility and way too much attitude for their age.

  18. Tinks says:

    What are her parents thinking???!!!

  19. Bee says:

I liked the song. She’s a talented little girl. And Will and Jada seem to be very responsible and stable people. I’m sure their kids will be fine.

  20. Tazina says:

Don’t worry about Willow. She comes from a well grounded family, all of them in show business. She was born to this lifestyle and wants to make her own way. She’s not running wild. I don’t see a drop of makeup on her face or any slutty clothes. You can bet her parents are monitoring her carefully. Why should her creative talents be stifled?

She has a good voice, amazing for 9. I think she’ll go far.

  21. DetRiotgirl says:

I really hate to admit this, but I think the song is pretty good. I mean, for a 9 year old? It’s downright awesome. I work in events and experiential marketing, and I frequently work on projects that are aimed at children. One company I work with insists on using kids bop for all their events. Omg, kids bop… Now, that is music that will make your ears bleed! Has anyone here ever heard the kids bop version of “how to save a life”? Seriously, you will need to find someone to save yours before it’s over. So, basically, I am totally ok with this little girl. If this song can replace just one kids bop song on the dj list in my future, my hat will be off to her. Also, she’s adorable. Go on Willow!

  22. denise says:

    Ridiculous.

  23. kiko says:

i don’t mind with kids that have talent and want to pursue their dreams at a young age but seriously thats an awful song maybe in a few years from now she will make better choices.

  24. Hmmm says:

Those kids are ruined. Look at the smugness and self-absorption on a 9 year old face.

  25. Just a Poster says:

    Oh my….

Did Jada go to the “how to pimp out my kids Billy Ray Cyrus” school?

  26. Sandy says:

    MAKE IT STOP!!!

  27. Stephy2485 says:

Hmm….She sounds WAY older than 9…
If this makes HER happy, I’m happy…

BUUUT, “I whip it real hard” was an odd choice of lyric.

  28. I Choose Me says:

Hate the chorus/hook – if you can call it that but she’s got a decent voice. It’s funny, Jaden and Jada make me ugh! but Will Smith and Willow are just somehow likeable. Hmmmm.

  29. RHONYC says:

she sounds….really, REALLY good. i’m like, shocked!

yeah, ri-ri…start packin’ them bags now gurl!

    lol 🙂

  30. Beau says:

“Honestly, listening to the song made me cringe in embarrassment for her. It it awful and does nothing to change my opinion of her and her brother as entitled kids who have way too little humility and way too much attitude for their age.”

“Look at the smugness and self-absorption on a 9 year old face.”

I agree with both these statements. While its true that she wears “layers and layers” compared to, say, Noah Cyrus (who is the same age and was allowed to wear lingerie – basically – to a premiere) and doesn’t wear makeup, look at the clothes she DOES choose to wear! Its crazy. Obviously her parents encourage her to be an individual and be creative (which I totally agree with), but there IS such a thing as letting your kids take it too far. Have you SEEN some of the outfits this girl has worn to events? Shoe-pants that lace all the way up? That jacket up there? This girl thinks she is the bomb and its written all over her smug little face.

  31. Ron says:

Will and Jada have given birth to employees not children. I am all for nepotism but these kids already have a tell all book in them.

  32. KJ says:

I could write an essay on how I feel about the Smith kids, but I’m just gonna keep it short and sweet since this post is about a 9 year old – she’s got a pretty good voice. I’m not gonna lie. This song could get decent airplay if promoted correctly. It’s age appropriate, fun, and cute. I wish her the best and I hope her parents arent pushing her too hard.

  33. benny says:

I don’t think the kids are being pushed too hard. It’s not like they had to WORK for any of this – their parents are GIVING them these record and movie deals the way other parents would give their kids toy trucks. They only thing I would worry about is what kind of adult they will turn out to be when they get record deals and fashion assistants handed to them on a silver platter when they’re 9 years old.

But the parents are such phonies, I doubt they worry about things like that. I’ll never forget how they showed up at some Hollywood event and gave an interview about how they were skipping the event to go home to their sick child, because that’s the kind of parents they are. Yeah, um . . . if the kid was THAT sick, why did they leave in the first place? So they could give an interview telling the world what great parents they are, of course. Total phonies.

  34. serena says:

    … this voice doesn’t seems a 9 years old’s.

  35. Diva says:

The over and over and over and over and over and over (see?) of the hook is annoying as hell to me, but when she sings, the girl is GOOD.
I haven’t seen Willow speak much, but her brother makes me SO uncomfortable on talk shows because he’s got such “I’m the shit!” attitude. He’s just a kid, so I feel bad, but I don’t like him because of it.

  36. Mistral says:

When did Mozart write his first symphony? 😉

  37. Shy says:

Congratulations Will and Jada. Most probably your children will end up with drug or alcohol addiction. As most of the kids who got pimped by their parents at young age. What were they thinking? They know the showbiz inside, they see how screwed up those children grow up. And they throw own kids there.

  38. bubblet says:

I’m sure next year she’ll be publishing her biography.

  39. Confuzzle says:

Oh good, we were running low on Scienobots in Hollywood.

  40. Andrea says:

What a talented girl! I’m sure her parents keep her well grounded.

She has a very good voice for 9. I see Willow going far. Will and Jada have two talented kids, but not surprising really.

  41. Trillion says:

Better than her dad’s old stuff. And I can’t hate on her style.

  42. CelebMom says:

Aww, look at all the non-celebrity, broke people insisting they know what is best for a child who lives in a completely different world than they do.

It’s amazing to read all of your opinions on how Will and Jada raise their children, how their children act, think and feel–when, I know for sure that if you actually knew them, you would know that their children have a strong desire and compassion to help people less fortunate than them, are more embarrassed by their parents fame and fortune than they are embracing of it, and have to work ten times harder than they would’ve normally to show their father they are serious about the things they want to get in before he will allow them to give it a try.

The best gift a parent can give their children is the ability to make their dreams come true. Will & Jada have accomplished this– not because they have a fortune and can buy a dream– but because they have DEMONSTRATED for their kids that if you believe in yourself and are willing to work hard for something, you can do and have anything. They have led by EXAMPLE and their children have witnessed the fruit of their labor since birth. Too often, parents just tell kids they can do and be whatever they want– however, the child witnesses their parents giving up on their own dreams and working jobs they hate. Children learn what they live, not what they are told.

I really don’t understand the”where’s her childhood??” comments. Do you make a child wait until their 18 to start playing football if their dream is to make it into the NFL?? No. Professional athletes start playing sports when they are 4, 5 and 6 years old. Just because the child has made ONE song doesn’t mean her parents are behind the scenes making her spend 12 hours a day in rehearsals or have a world tour in the making.

Take a chill pill. Get a grip. Ask yourself what missing in your life that you actually are sitting here spending time online hating on a nine year old. Do better.

  43. Shy says:

And also – remember how much backlash Jayden got after Karate Kid? How everyone hated him. Because he was annoying whiny kid in The Day the Earth Stood Still. Most people disliked him from there. And then he was all full of himself in those red carpets and tv shows. And people didn’t like it.

And now Willow will have backlash too. Because it’s all fake. It’s one thing if she would have her own persona like Madonna’s daughter. But they hired her a stylist!!! She does not dress herself like that. Her stylist put her in that clothes and did that haircut. And daddy bought her song and auto tune made her so called “sing”…

What’s next? Daddy should by her role in some Disney tv show. She will become little popular like all those DemiLovatos and others. And will end up in rehab or will drink and drive. Like they all do.

  44. Musicfan says:

Look I’m not famous nor do I have children yet, I want to wait until my career is steady. Anyway the way this looks is bad. Yeah Michael Douglas took over for Kirk, but he was a ADULT. For every sucessful story, there are bad ones.

Charlie Sheen was a entitled piece of crap because of his dad, now look?

Look at Michael Jackson? He could sing/dance all those things at 5 years old! Joe pushed it. Made him Just like Jada is pushing Willow and Jaden because she is nowhere near a A list star WITHOUT Will. Someone said on Bossip that Jaden was uncomfortable kissing a girl in his movie, saying he wasn’t ready, but Jada was there telling him to do so.

This is a recipe for disaster. Willow has a great voice but she dosen’t sound like a 9 year old. Her voice sounds way older, and the fact that she was able to shave half her hair off, because she wanted too, and will have a staff and feel entitled before she hits 13 will mean she will turn into “Michael Jackson”. Will was already grown before he became famous. I don’t buy for a second he wants his kids to do this at 12 and 9. That Jada is running the show, and he is afraid to tell her off.

People need to worry about “The Smith Kids” more than they need about Brangelina kids. She supposedly has a record deal with Roc Nation, Jay-Z label. These kids already have a tell book in them. Watch Willow and Jaden are the NEXT Michael and Janet jackson. They already trying to get Jaden his own tv show on NBC. Where he is the star, He is 12! The only one of Will kids that will end up normal is Trey, because Jada isnt mom.

  45. CelebMom says:

    @Musicfan-

You’re wrong. I would love to know how you’ve come to the assumptions you have regarding Will’s and Jada’s personalities. Absolutely absurd. You have no idea what goes on in their household.

Their kids will be fine. Trey isn’t into acting or music- he is into football. Will has nurtured his athletic abilities and interest since he was extremely young, the same way he is allowing his other children to explore their interest.

They allowed WIllow to shave off her hair because it IS JUST hair. As a black girl, they believe it is important for her to understand that her hair does not define her– and if at nine years old, she has the guts to not be afraid of taunts about her hair or being different than they have already done a much better job parenting than most.

Their kids are comfortable in their own skin. You don’t hold your kids back from accomplishing something they are willing to work hard at because you’re scared of backlash. That’s how children turn into the type of adults who work shitty jobs, are self-conscious and spend their lives miserable because they’re too afraid of what everyone else will say and think about them. You teach your child that the only think that matters is that whatever they do in life makes THEM happy– and to hell with what anyone else thinks about it.

  46. CelebMom says:

Also, regarding who is running the “show” here. Jada didn’t want Jayden to even do Karate Kid. She thought eight months of extensive training, was too much for her young son. However, Will said, this is his dream, this is what he wants and he needs to understand how much work and dedication it requires. He has said this in every single interview they’ve done about the movie. It’s quite hilarious that you have so many opinions about them when you clearly don’t even follow them.

  47. no, no, no says:

    wtf, SHE’S FUCKING 9!

  48. anonymous says:

Why is it Jada kids that are persuing music and acting careers, the child by Will Smith’s first wife did not, that should tell us something. Jada is an embarassment to Will Smith on the Red Carpet and in interviews blah, blah, blah about her sex life, a fish wife mouth, not surprised that she pushed her kids in the lime light and let Will Smith first son on the side lines.

  49. CelebMom says:

It shouldn’t tell us anything “Anonymous”. Do you assume that every child wants to be in front of a camera or on a record?? Trey plays football– and is actually quite the star athlete. That’s his passion. Not music or acting. Did you ever stop to think that perhaps, his first child didn’t want to pursue a career in Hollywood???? He knows who his father is and what he can make happen. Clearly, he doesn’t want that.

  50. Lukie says:

    @Celebmom

    Jada/Jada’s entourage? Is that you?
‘Cause ya seem to know way too much about the Smiths’…

Personally, I like kids to look like kids, not fashion plates w/stylists, but that’s me.

I say, get the kid a studio and stick her in a performing arts school. She doesn’t need a record deal. She’s friggin’ 9.

Outside of that, no big deal. I doubt the parents are pushing anything. This has been what the kids have been exposed to their whole lives. Nothing wrong with expressing creativity. At least the parents have more control over what their kids will be involved in than no name stage parents. Little Willow will not be a Lohan.

  51. Willow Smith says:

Willow Smith easily recorded 1 of the most catchy pop songs in a while. I am dancing on my chair as I’m hearing Whip My Hair right now!

  52. Jenifer says:

Would you broke people shut up about how Will and Jada Smith are raising their child. They are no different than a parent helping a child become a athlete, model or anything else a child wish to become, except they have MONEY and your broke ass don’t. Don’t be jealous! She’s a kid. At least she doesn’t look like trashy Miley and her little sister.
