NKOTB’s Today show performance: Hit or miss?

After months of speculation, the reunited early-90’s boy band New Kids on the Block performed live this morning on the Today show. Throngs of screaming 25-35 year-old women braved the rain to catch a glimpse of the “Kids” and a chance to relive their adolescence. However, the jury’s still out on whether the performance was a success.

Flashback!

New Kids on the Block performed together for the first time in 15 years on Today this morning.

The boy band sang and danced their way through a medley of old and new hits โ€” including “You Got It (the Right Stuff),” “Hangin’ Tough” and “Step by Step.” (Watch below)

Despite the rainy weather, over 3,000 fans cheered on the band โ€” one of the show’s largest turnouts for its outdoor concert series. Some fans had even camped out overnight.

“I’m going to spend the night just to be ready so early!” joked Joey McIntyre to Usmagazine.com on Thursday.

I saw the performance live this morning, and to be perfectly honest, I thought they sucked. I have never been a fan, but I always gave the group props for performing live back in the day (when many other acts were lip-syncing), and for having some pretty difficult choreography to do on top of that. But today, these guys are really showing their age in both their vocal abilities and their dance moves. They looked out of shape, and their voices are not what they used to be. Joey’s famous falsetto doesn’t have that same range- which is understandable, given that he was about 13 when the group first hit it big. It will be interesting to see if these guys have the stamina and remaining fan base to actually take this on tour. My advice to Blockheads: stick with your CD’s and life sized posters, otherwise you might be disappointed.

The New Kids on The Block are shown performing this morning, thanks to WENN.

Terrible. For real. Played and boring.

  2. Ron says:

I love it when the guys from the Elks Lodge perform. They’re real good.

  3. JennGush says:

    Hmmm… I’m laughing.

  4. Lesley says:

    LOL @ Ron’s comment!

  5. headache says:

Lovely nostalgia trip but I don’t see a serious comeback here.

And whoever set up the mics should be fired. Donny’s was loud as hell and you could barely hear Jordan and I’m really ten kinds of ashamed I ever knew and still remember whose voice belongs to whom.

  6. Emma says:

OMG. I am cringing right now

  7. Ceenitall says:

Well that was just awful…. Bless their hearts.

  8. Diva says:

    Jordan looks like an Osmond!

I was never a fan, so I have no point of reference. The women there seemed to love it, though!

  9. I choose me says:

Ohhhkayyy. That was um…underwhelming. I was a die hard fan and I wanted to like their performance, I really did but that was sooo not green.

    Still, NKOTB. Squeee!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

On second viewing, Joey sounds good and I actually prefer to hear him sing Please Don’t Go Girl in his tenor voice rather than his boyhood falsetto. The choreography wasn’t too bad imo but I hope their improve their live appearances.

    Ohhh Ohhhh Ohhhh thats bad
    SOO SOO SOOO bad

IDIOTS! Why didn’t they try that when the boy band resurgance was at it’s height? The lamest thing was that it seemed so LATE 90s…. and they’re an EARLY 90s group. So what it came across to me like was a pathetic attempt to be like BSB and NSYNC — 10 years too late.

You know, I didn’t actually mind it that much. I was a huge fan when I was younger and had a video of them performing a bunch of hits that I probably watched a thousand times. I agree with headache about the mics, I think that was a major problem right there, although it’s true that their singing wasn’t particularly “great”. *L* I did think the choreography was fine and will admit to getting a huge smile on my face when they sang The Right Stuff and did the choreography on it. I still think Jonathan is adorable as hell but am I the only one who thinks Danny is actually much (much!) better looking now than he was back in the day? I used to think he was seriously unattractive looking when they were at the height of their popularity but now… yum.

    Or is that just me?

  13. S. says:

ok I was never a big fan but the new song is quite good! Reminds me of the Take That comeback single, has a nice laid back/uptempo ballad feel. Quite catchy. eek!

  14. Mairead says:

That had a certain charming naffness about it ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Megan says:

God, why perform in the rain? Who’s stupid idea was that?

Also these guys are in their late 30’s now. Boybands were just that… BOYS. Doesn’t quite have the same effect when they’re all middle aged. I think they all look gorgeous, but the performance was rubbish.

  16. Sasha says:

How about unnecessary? Like a condom machine in the Vatican.

  17. headache says:

Elizabeth, you aren’t the only one. LOL Every boy band has the not so hot one and I always like him best. Nice to know I saw the potential in Danny. lol

  18. jess says:

dont hate, haters (just teasin btw) ๐Ÿ˜‰ lmao… i was a total nkotb fan when i was younger, just dont tell my friends lol!

  19. Gina says:

I was a big fan of The New Kids On The Block back then. I didn’t get to see them perform on the show but I am sure that they did their thing. They do look good after all these years.
