DWTS premiere – Bristol Palin, Jennifer Grey and Kyle Massey bring it

Bristol Palin & Mark Ballas – dancing is at 1:50

The Dancing with The Stars premiere was last night, and most of the new competitors really brought it. I was surprised by how good some of the contestants were, and how willing they were to dance to numbers reminding us of the only reasons we know them. The song choices were too obvious, although that’s not new for this show. For instance Bristol Palin’s song was “Momma Told Me Not to Come,” Audrina Patridge chose “California Girls” and showed off her incredible abs and perky implants, Jennifer Grey picked a song straight out of Dirty Dancing complete with moves reminiscent of the movie, and David Hasselhof tried to work his aging sex symbol act to “Sex Bomb.” In his introductory segment, Hasselhof spoke of himself in the third person and assured us that he’s “still a big star in Germany.”

It was a lot of fun, and there were some surprises, like Bristol Palin’s energetic performance (above) and a larger kid I’ve never heard of named Kyle Massey who did a Cha Cha Cha with Lacey Schwimmer to a high school theme. Massey really brought it, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of him.

Michael Bolton was probably the weakest dancer along with David Hasselhof, and he really tried but was stiff and had trouble keeping up.

Margaret Cho did a ridiculous over-the-top Viennese Waltz to “We Are The Champions” complete with giant gold fabric “wings” that she kept using to try and distract us from her weak moves. She wore a fug long black gown embroidered with giant colorful flowers.

Florence Henderson, 76, looked gorgeous with legs to there and while she wasn’t the best dancer she was good and can only improve.

The Situation wasn’t bad, but he was under-rehearsed, as the judges noted. Judge Len Goodman quipped that “You’ve got the guns but not the ammunition.” I was surprised by what a good sport that kid was, and by the fact that he didn’t take off his shirt.

E! Online has more of a recap including the judges’ scores. Tonight is elimination night and I bet that Michael Bolton is going to leave, but we’ll see!

Bristol, Audrina & Kyle were my faves. Michael Bolton was the weakest link.

  2. kelbear says:

After watching last night I really think this season is going to be better than everyone thought. Everyone looked to be having a good time and did surprisingly well. And that Kyle shocked the heck out of me, he’s got some moves.

  3. chasingadalia says:

CB: Kyle was one of the few stars to emerge from a Disney Channel show and not be permanently messed up or overpromoted. I’m pretty sure they also didn’t force him into a singing career, hence why he’s not known to most everyone over 22.

  4. Marjalane says:

I agreed with your entire review celebitchy! I don’t know how the voting will pan out, but I was glad to see that this years “Kate” seemed to be Hasselhoff. Does anyone else wonder if he’s somehow fried his brain along the way? He’s kind of third party bizarre.

Really, really, glad to see Bristol Palin do a good job: I’m sick of people beating up on her, and I was sorry to see Margaret Cho revert to a bit of insecurity with Louie- I love her and don’t think she needs to always be a joke.

  5. KLO says:

Bristol really came off as a sweet girl in this clip. And she looked beautiful too. Way to go! (btw i was never a fan)

  6. Eileen says:

Oh man the Jennifer Grey video made me cry!

  7. L says:

We actually started a drinking game to bristol, everytime she or anyone mentions her mom we drink. Not a good idea, or was it? 😀

  8. Charissa says:

Bristol looked great but she should burn any high necked blouses with fussy neck bows because it made her look about 25 pounds heavier.

  9. L says:

Man for pushing 50-Jennifer grey looks AWESOME. And natural.

  10. Scarlet Vixen says:

I’ve only watched the Bristol Palin clip so far. I hate how DWTS has to trot out the contestants’ lives and try to get sympathy votes (it was at it’s absolute worst with Kate Gosselin), so I don’t think it’s Bristol’s idea to constantly have people mention her mom.
On a good note, the girl’s got some legs! And, I think she’s one of those girls who’s always gonna have a baby face. She may hate it now, but it’ll help keep her looking young when she gets older. 🙂

  11. bagladey says:

Rick Fox was great: Smooth and sexy, and I was pleasantly surprised by Bristol Palin’s personality. The Hoff however is a clown and has no rhythm what-so-ever but I can still see him improving before Michael Bolton does. This show distinguishes the guys who have sexy appearances and images from the truly sexy guys who can roll their hips and aren’t embarassed to do it in public. Hey, like Maks!

  12. Kbomb says:

@L: your first post about the drinking game made me LOL. However, I think you had one too many tequila’s if you think Jennifer Grey looks natural. Girl looks so different in the face since the Dirty Dancing days that if I hadn’t seen her on Friends a bunch of years back I would have been knocked off my seat. If by natural you mean her moves, then YES, I thought she danced really well! And her body is AWESOME!! All in all, I enjoyed the show – I was especially fascinated by Brooke Burks (sp?) boobs which looked EXACTLY like a Barbie’s boobs. They were contrary to everything I learned in science class. I also have a weird crush on The Situation. I can’t believe I just admitted that. Let the lambasting begin 😉

  13. baron says:

I really can’t stand Keri Ann-she’s trying to be more interesting this season, but her personality has the appeal of pickled herring! Bristol was stiff; the Hoff has lost his sex appeal; and Margaret Cho, who is quite funny, did not do herself a service by going bizzaro in batwings! Len seems to kiss ass when it comes to politicians-reference his comments to DeLay last season. I lost interest quickly and kept switching to watch The Yankees whip the Rays. Go Yanks!

  14. California Surfer says:

    Grandma adores Michael Night!

  15. jen says:

@Kbomb-I agree, Jennifer Grey is unrecognizable! She should have left her nose alone!!

I don’t know about a crush on The Situation (let’s not get rash-lol!) but he was more likable than I expected.

  16. Darlene says:

whoa, Jennifer Grey made me cry!

And she had that plastic surgery YEARS and YEARS ago and has been trying to come back from it ever since. She has said she regrets it. 🙁

  17. Feebee says:

I think Michael Bolton may have a few more fans than Margaret Cho so I’m picking her to go over Bolton. Though if Michael Bolton does leave I think he’ll be the least disappointed.

I like Kurt Warner’s potential and didn’t get how they were so hard on him esp compared to Mr Fox who was a little better but the judges thought a lot of.

I’m glad Bristol didn’t freeze, but she does need to loosen up. I LOLed when Bruno said this was virgin territory for her.

I’m rooting for Ms Patridge, she seems quite sweet (I’ve never seen the Hills) and Tony deserves it. I can’t believe they’ve given the best dancer (possibly) to bloody Derek again. When does he get the challenge of teaching a total un-co novice to dance? But despite Derek, also rooting for Jennifer Grey who’s piece I knew would make me cry.

The Hoff, as entertaining as he is did seem a little out of it and not in a temporary sort of way. He seems out of it in an really old guy permanent way.

Nobody was really really crap so that’s a good sign.

  18. di butler says:

Poor Bristol really tried, but she was pretty stiff. Not Kate Gosselin stiff, but stiff. The Situation, The Hoff, and Michael Bolton were painful to watch. Maybe in a few weeks we will see dramatic improvement.

  19. Amanda says:

I have to disagree with you about Bristol’s dancing- it was pretty bad and alternated between stiff and sloppy, like she was alllllmost forgetting what she was supposed to do.

BUT, I did think she came across as sweet and trying to do her OWN thing, and I liked that. I liked the effort and attempt at personality– I realley expected her to pull out a piss-poor personality-less Kim Kardashian-like performance (anyone who watches the show will remember Kim’s stiff as a board moves).

I hope Bristol is able to shed the Sarah Palin storyline and just be herself. Then I could really cheer for her.

I liked Kurt Warner… a lot! I was not expecting too because I don’t know anything about him. Also, Kyle, the kid who did the dance with Lacey. I also thought he would be one of my least faves since I have no idea who he is. But, loved him! We’ll see if it lasts for more than the one dance, since that dance was pretty cute. Loved the Situation, just because its the Situation and can’t wait to see him all season long. A lot of the rest of the people were really boring. I could really care less about Brandy.

  20. BethL says:

I hate Lacey’s hair. Blond is not a good look for her.

  21. TaylorB says:

That Kyle kid was great! Bristol did a great job as well, but the song choice… yikes. And I must say Mrs Brady is still rocking a great pair of legs.

I was sort of passing by the TV from time to time so I didn’t catch the whole show but who was that really handsome tall fella in the tan suit?

  22. TaylorB says:

Freebee wrote: “I’m rooting for Ms Patridge, she seems quite sweet…”

Oh for shame! You are going to go to TVLand hell for that, that was MRS BRADY not Mrs Partridge!!! Next you are going to mix up Greg Brady with Keith Partridge… what is this world coming to. 😉

  23. Katie says:

Is it just me, or is Bristol’s dance partner kind of all over her? He seems really touchy to me. I don’t watch the show though, just watched this clip, so maybe all of them are like that?

  24. L says:

@kbomb Meh, I can forgive her for having a bad nose job 20 years ago. She’s famously said repeatedly that she regrets that. But her skin and body are smoking for a 50 year old. And she doesn’t look a Real Housewife (which is sadly, my definition of trying to hang on to you.) In comparison, she looks fantastic compared to someone like Lisa Rinna who is actually YOUNGER than Grey.

  25. Stretch says:

@ TaylorB – I think Feebee was talking about Audrina Patridge, not Florence Henderson aka. Mrs. Brady

  26. Kitten says:

Don’t watch the show but the ladies at work told me Bristol Palin sucked more than Gosselin? I am confuzzled….

  27. TaylorB says:

    Stretch,

Oops! Thank you for the clarification. I don’t know who Audriana is, so I misunderstood… frankly I don’t know who over half of those people are. Mea culpa.

  28. Feebee says:

@ Stretch and Taylor B… ha, thanks! I was talking about Audrina but it was kinda funny. I don’t remember if I ever saw the Partridge Family as a kid to even mix them up. Mrs Brady is impressive for 76.

  29. bw says:

Kitten – nobody in the history of DWTS has ever sucked more than Gosslin, IMO. Her stiff walking, no rhythm and scowl, was painful to watch. Palin did fine! She was smiling, trying, rhythmic, shaking her booty, having fun and may not win, but she was entertaining and you weren’t nervously willing her (as I was with Gosslin) to just safely make it off the stage.

  30. Shazza says:

Seem to recall Jenifer Grey and Patrick Swayze not exactly being close while filming ‘Dirty Dancing’ so now she’s going to milk his death for the sympathy vote? Ick!
And yes, Kyle Massey played Raven-Symone’s little brother on her Disney show ‘That’s So Raven’ then got his own show ‘Corey in the House’. He and Raven are 2 of the few Disney kids that managed to grow up normally.

  31. garvels says:

Kyle Massey was outstanding. Why aren’t we seeing him more?? I guess it is because he has talent and is not as connected as the Willow and Jaden Smith’s of the world.

Bristol did well considering she never has been involved in entertainment. Audrina did well but I was really surprised that Cho lost it. I think Cho would be relieved if she was voted off the show. She was really uncomfortable!

I was surprised that Michael Bolten was so stiff and Florence Henderson was enjoyable to watch. The two athletes,Warner and Fox were also respectable in their first attempt on the dance floor.

Jury is out on the “Situation”….If he continues to present himself as obnoxious and arrogant he will lose the viewing audience and go home early; even though he may have the potential to be a contender.

I also almost forgot to mention Brandy, but I see no one else really brought her up either….she really didn’t leave any type of impression, just so,so….like her career and personality. I guess that is why she is on the show. I was surprised that Maksim didn’t create choreography more challenging and contemporary for her routine. If she is going to change up her image, she definitely needs to step things up like Nicole Scherzinger did last year.

My vote is on Cho going home.

  32. Megan says:

    I loved Audrina’s hair!!

Is it me or is Bristol Palin being in a dance show a bit… inappropriate?

  33. Marjalane says:

    #32

    It’s just you.

  34. lc says:

ok, I haven’t left a comment on a message board in yrs(lol, because I’m afraid of people’s backlash) but I just HAD to say that just from watching the clips on here that I was really impressed with Bristol! I agree that she needs to leave her mom out of it and focus on having fun and loosening up:). I always thought Audrina wasn’t the brightest bulb on the Hills but her ability to learn all those techniques in such a short amount of time have swayed me otherwise. And ‘The Situation’, LOL!!! I couldn’t stop laughing at their routine(in a good, fun-loving way, mind you). Didn’t see Brandy’s performance but I think I’m rooting for Audrina to take it home and Bristol to go farther than all the naysayers expect her to:)!!!!

  35. Diva says:

Whoa! That Ballas guy was ALL OVER Bristol… that last time he hugged into her during the scoring part even SHE looked uncomfortable.

  36. lucy2 says:

I don’t watch this show, but based on the little bit I’ve seen on this post, Bristol needs to shoot whoever did her makeup, she looks awful. Don’t think her dancing was all that great, but at least she was better than the clips I saw of Gosselin last year!

Jennifer Grey looks pretty good, though of course different than we all remember – is she really 50!?! Holy crap, she’s in great shape.

  37. Aw, this was a very nice post. In thought I would like to put in writing like this moreover – taking time and actual effort to make an excellent article… however what can I say… <a href=”http://www.exchangemymail.com”>ms exchange 2010 I procrastinate alot and by no means appear to get something done.

Your notion is outstanding; the issue is something which you will find not enough individuals are speaking intelligently about. We are quite pleased that I came across this in my search for some thing regarding this.
