Blake Lively brags that she convinced boyfriend Penn Badgley he was adopted

Comments on the prank start at 8:10

Gossip Girl and The Town star, Blake Lively, was on Letterman Friday. Letterman was fawning all over her and kept trying to fix her hair, although he said she was “just a kid” at 23. I’ve never seen an interview with Blake before and was initially impressed by how relaxed, personable and friendly she was. While she seemed nice enough at first, she told a really disturbing story about the lengths she went through to prank her boyfriend, fellow Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley, this April Fool’s Day. The things she did to him sound downright mean, as clever as she obviously thought she was. Blake almost convinced that guy that he was adopted and that his biological father was Steven Tyler. She even got Penn’s publicist and mother in on it.

[Penn] always wondered how he was so musically gifted without having musically gifted parents. So I thought ‘who is musically gifted who has lots of kids? Steven Tyler’

So I thought, ‘Well I’m going to say that’s his father.’

So I created a fake e-mail address and wrote a letter to him the night before April Fools… saying ‘I had a child with Steven Tyler. I live in Maryland (where he was born), I’m an English professor. I want to reach out to you and I’d like to have a relationship with you now that you’re of age.’

And then I had his publicist call in the morning and say ‘hey listen, I got a call from one of the magazines in New York. They got a story, Steven Tyler is saying that he has a child who is also in this business, that he’s hoping to reach out to and connect with, he didn’t realize that this was his son’ and I had them play it off like ‘this is ridiculous’ so we were laughing about it all day.

And then his mom called him later and said ‘I need to talk to you.’ Yeah. [laughs]

I saw his whole life flash before his eyes in about 10 seconds…

He was obviously disappointed that his parents weren’t his parents and his whole life was a lie. A little traumatic.

So not only did Blake pull this very mean elaborate prank on her boyfriend, a prank that involved sequential steps in which a less self-confident person might have backed out and admitted it was joke, she used it as an anecdote to recount on national television. Personally, I hope she didn’t pull it off like this or it wasn’t as convincing as she’s trying to portray. Either way, she strikes me as rather cold and calculating.

NOTE BY KAISER: I think Blake is really self-confident, to the point where she kind of comes across as an a–hole. Whatever!

Actually I think it’s kinda funny

  2. Oi says:

The poster child for generic CA blond is still trying to stay relevant.

  3. Po says:

I think what made you think it was mean was the end where she says he was upset that he thought his parents weren’t his parents and used the word traumatic. I don’t think it was that mean though, especially if his mom helped out. I think everyone has their own sense of humor and while that may have hurt your feelings, she might have known that he would think it was funny.

  4. jc126 says:

Ugh. This makes her look like a 4 star c word.

  5. crazymary says:

I was watching letterman when she told this story and found her to be the Meanest of the mean girls. This prank could not have sucked more and it was not funny, at all. Letterman and the audience just sat in silence while this twit grinned like a total fool telling this story. Not a fan anymore…

  6. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

Wow it’s no wonder why Ben always looks like he wants to eat her up when they’re together. She seems really entertaining and talented.

  7. cutie says:

Please! Thats not mean, thats hilarious.

  8. liz says:

Penn always wondered how he was so muscially gifted without….? Seriously? Give me a break.

  9. englishbreakfast says:

i actually think this is v creative and pretty fun.

  10. mln says:

I saw Letterman I am not a fan of hers but I thought the prank funny especially since that is basically the Liv Tyler story. BUT I think in general she sucked on Letterman she really didn’t get ANY laughs.

  11. Jean says:

I’m sure if he had truly been offended or hurt by this elaborate prank of hers, Blake would be single right now and would’ve refrained from telling this tale on Letterman.

  12. geenie says:

I love her and I think she’s gorgeous. To think about it, the prank is pretty funny, plus it was April Fool’s day. Her acting abilities impressed me in The Town.

  13. SoulLovah says:

    WHAT music abilities???

  14. Isa says:

HER LEGS! Geez! I’m in love with her legs, not her (she’s okay.)

  15. xxodettexx says:

hmm, it may seem cruel from where we stand but i know i have done things that most of you would deem much MUCH crueler than this to my own boyfriend but its bc he is SO easy to tease and he falls for everything! [sidenote, he and i were intially best friends for 6 years before we started dating, so i think he understands my need to be a jokester still!]

  16. Taurus says:

This girl looks like she is pushing 40 yikes! She is a terrible dresser too.

    MJ FOR HGF!

  17. anon says:

I think she looks fantabulous in that last picture. She’s pulling that lacy/chiffon-y dress off; I’m feeling it!

  18. Jeri says:

I saw the show & I thought she came across badly. Really boring like she didn’t know how to tell a story. I felt like even a good story would sound boring coming from her. Maybe it just seemed odd to me.

  19. felicity says:

His mom was involved, so I don’t think the prank was that cruel. He probably got a laugh out of it.

  20. original kate says:

that IS hilarious…if you’re 14. what will she do next april fools – tell her boyfriend that his dog was hit by a car while he was at work? she sounds like a grade A twat who should grow up.

  21. Mara says:

I thought it sounded funny. Obviously he’s used to her sense of humor and doesn’t object since they’ve been together for a few years now and they’re still together after this.

My favorite story was the Disney jail story though. What the hell was that? The whole thing sounded insane and I loved that she had to apologize. Dave was also actually pretty cute with her instead of either grumpy or pervy like he normally is with the hot, young ones.

  22. Kate says:

Meh. The prank isn’t particularly cruel, nor is it particularly funny.

I’ve seen her acting and I don’t see anything special there (same goes for Penn). And I don’t find her to be a great beauty either.

Meh is a good descriptive term for her. Everything with her is very “meh” to me.

  23. IceBunny says:

I thought it was funny too.. very, in fact. CB I usually agree with you.. but you are being too nice on this one. It was a good prank, and I am sure the “trauma” was fleeting. As for the quality of her interview.. freaking David Letterman interrupted practically every sentence she started – no WONDER she came across as stilted. I can’t stand him.. as much as he likes to fancy himself “interviewing” his guests.. you can see it’s all about HIM. A friend of mine who is a spine surgeon who treated him said he was the most obssessive, OCD, arrogant person he had ever met.
