Tim Gunn records PSA for gay suicide prevention, discusses his suicide attempt

The PSA below, featuring Tim Gunn, made CB cry. It got me choked up too, but I didn’t start crying until I got to People Magazine’s cover story. Just FYI – hearing Tim Gunn talk about suicide amongst gay teens will really get you worked up. Tim recorded the PSA as part of a new initiative by The Trevor Project, a gay suicide prevention project that some celebrities – like Kathy Griffin and Daniel Radcliffe – have been working with for years. The Trevor Project does a lot of work with gay suicide prevention, and they even have a 24-hour hotline – for more information about their work, and for the donation page, go here.

Anyway, Tim Gunn recorded a very sad PSA about gay suicide. Tim reiterated columnist Dan Savage’s movement of “It Gets Better” (which we discussed yesterday). Tim confesses his own suicide attempt at the age of 17 years old… and… Jesus. Sad.

If Tim tells you not to do something, don’t do. Whether it’s in the workroom or in your personal life, take Tim’s advice. He’s like Jesus, only he’s gay, celibate, fabulous, and he will bitch you out for not working a Manolo.

Back to the serious subject – People Magazine’s cover is also about gay suicide and bullying, and the cover is of Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers student whose intimate relations with a man were recorded live by his straight roommate. People excerpts the story here – what keeps coming back to me in the stories of young gay suicides is that these teens felt like they were alone in the world, that no one understood them or heard them. I hope that this movement by some celebrities is one that if you’re young and gay and in pain, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There is a kid like you in every town. And it does get better. Listen to Papa Gunn.

I’m so happy that this issue is getting more attention. There was another recent suicide, in CA, I think? I saw a news story where that boy’s younger brother was crying, asking “why couldn’t people just be nicer to my brother?” Chokes me up just thinking about it. I don’t understand what is up with the bullying these days, I feel like it is much worse than when I was a kid (grew up in the 80’s).

I can’t view the video till I go home from work but I can only imagine what he has to say. Love Tim!

I hope the family of Tyler Clementi finds peace in this horrific sad tale. I am angry that this kind of bullying and selfishness still exists in this country.

Thank you, CB, for contributing to the coverage of this very important issue. I work directly with at-risk and suicidal LGBTQ youth and can tell you that the problem is widespread. Thank you for helping draw attention — and action! — to it. And, thank you thank you thank you, Tim Gunn!

  18. nnire says:

God, i love tim gunn soooooo much!

and i adore this project. what a fabulous way to reach struggling young (and not-so-young) LGBT persons–in the privacy of their own home. because, quite frankly, it’s going to be a loooong time before schools are going to initiate their own ‘it’s ok to be gay’ projects and bring in fabulous gay motivational speakers.

as a young and not-very-out professional, i’m really enjoying this outburst of support.

  19. Trillion says:

And I thought I couldn’t love him more! This is a subject near and dear to me, as I have 2 gay siblings. My much older brother had to grow up gay in our military conservative religious family pre-Stonewall. Our father never accepted my brother’s sexuality and continually tried to convince him he could “pray the gay away” rather than love him the way he was born. Ros attempted suicide several times throughout his life and was plagued with continual bouts of deep depression. He died 2 years ago of complications from combined prescription medications. It’s still a mystery whether or not he took his own life. I look forward to the day our society finally drops this flat earth idea that people choose their sexual orientation and learns to value a person according to their merits rather than race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. We can do this.

  20. Lisa S. says:

I adore you Mr. Gunn. You are helping many.

  21. belle Epoch says:

Ditto, ditto, ditto. LOVE this man. He is a treasure that just happened to be discovered for a larger life by Project Runway. For all the human garbage reality TV finds under rocks, we have one Tim Gunn.

So glad he was not successful at his suicide attempt. His example means everything. Imagine the world without him!

  22. Mistral says:

    Again, Tim Gunn is A+.

  23. Team Bethenny says:

No, Tim…WE’RE very happy today that your attempt was unsuccessful.

  24. molly says:

Our world is a richer place because of the elegant, kind, honest, and sensible Tim Gunn. . .SO glad his suicide attempt was not a successful one!

  25. Mermaid Girl says:

    Love.Tim.Gunn.

  26. bunny wabba says:

oh tim, i am so sorry you had to go through that. this is a great message that needs to he be heard right now. i am not gay but i would never persecute anyone for being gay. i think it’s normal and something that’s determined for them. nobody chooses to be gay. there will be a time when nobody cares of you’re gay or straight. everyone persevere until that time comes and no you have tons of supporters and the haters are all ignorant.

  27. Kiska says:

I can’t imagine the world without Tim Gunn in it. He has so much heart, integrity and class that it makes me want to be a better person. Honestly, his most recent book, “Gunn’s Golden Rules” spoke to me on such a personal level. He speaks the truth and I adore him.
