Kelly Ripa on her constant exercise: “It’s my antidote for everything”

gh-nov-10-cover-2

We normally don’t cover the new issue releases of Good Housekeeping, but they sent us the high-resolution cover image of Kelly Ripa’s November cover, plus the interview, so why not? I think she’s the cover girl because she just turned 40 years old, and they want to make her the next poster girl for The Girl Next Door Who Is Fabulous At 40! Now, I don’t categorically hate Kelly. Do I think she might have some issues? Sure. She’s pretty annoying, she’s not the best interviewer, and I always end up feeling for her husband because he has to put up with her. But, on the bright side, she’s really not that bad, she’s very flirty and fun, and she’s got that kind of relentless optimism that I could never achieve, but I admire in others. The full interview is here – it’s written as a day-in-the-life piece, and they go through Kelly’s daily craziness in detail, with additional comments by her and the people around her. Here are some excerpts:

In the November issue of Good Housekeeping (on sale Oct 12), Kelly Ripa, America’s most energetic mom, shares how she recharges her batteries, the get happy secret her husband taught her and what she’s most grateful for this holiday season. She may have become famous by sharing her morning cup of coffee with millions of Americans, but she doesn’t think her daily routine is all that unique. “I’m like any working mom,” the TV star insists. “When I’m at work, I’m remembering what I forgot to do for the kids, and when I’m with the kids, I’m remembering what I forgot to do at work. And so, I’m constantly in a state of guilt and distraction.”

Date Night with Husband Mark Consuelos – “a little bump and tickle”
“We carve out time for ourselves. I think we’re better parents because date night gives us something to look forward to, a night where we’re not saying, ‘Put that down, stop touching her, don’t spill that.’ Sometimes we’ll put the kids to bed early and watch Jersey Shore on DVR. It can be that simple, just the two of us, alone, one day a week, for dinner and hijinks…a little bump and tickle. Woo-hoo! I’m 40. I can say that now.”

Sees Her Husband in an Avatar ‘I see you’ Way
“I think about my husband in the middle of the day because I love him and I can’t wait to see him. He is my best friend. Nobody knows me the way he knows me. We’ve seen each other in an Avatar, ‘I see you’ way.”

Vegas Wedding Okay for Ripa, but Not Her Daughter
“People assume that when you get married in Vegas, you go in willy-nilly. We wanted to get married and start our lives together, and we didn’t take it any less seriously than anybody who has a huge wedding. It’s the marriage that’s important, not the wedding. But, I will kill my daughter if she runs off and elopes, because I want to have a big party.”

Exercising Too Much?
“It’s my antidote for everything. If I feel any sort of emotional upheaval, I go for a jog and I feel better.”

Thanksgiving Tradition – Can’t Replace the Doughboy
“I’m a very health-conscious person; I try to really do what’s right for my kids, but I don’t think you can replace the Pillsbury Doughboy.”

[From Good Housekeeping]

The “bump and tickle” comment annoys me, but I like what she said about eloping and how it might have been good enough for her, but it won’t be good enough for her daughter. I also like what she says about the holidays and eating, and it’s clear that she’s not one of those mothers (cough, Gwyneth) who pushes her own food issues onto her children. In another part of the interview, Kelly explains how no matter what, every night she and Mark and the kids have dinner together: “Sometimes it’s 6:30, sometimes 7:30, sometimes it’s going to be pizza or takeout. It’s important to have that time together as a family. We have some very deep conversations. Mark and I are from the generation where children were seen and not heard, but my kids have great insights and their own opinions about everything.” Nice. But I worry about her exercise habits – she’s gotten so, so skinny.

    They are adorable!

  2. Kitten says:

I’ve always kinda liked her..not sure why. I think because she always seems so self-deprecating and I dig that style. Anyway, I use exercise as an antedote to everything too. It works for me. I also love how she says that it’s the marriage that counts, not the wedding.

  3. Granger says:

I know this is stupid, but it really bothers me that she’s billed as “America’s most energetic mom.” I don’t doubt she’s a wonderful mother, but she still has way more help than the rest of us (people who clean her house and arrange her schedule, if nothing else). That statement is just another way to make the average mom feel like a bag of crap.

  4. Fishlips says:

I remember watching her when she was on “All My Children”. I thought she was pretty. My mother and I agree that she’s become too thin.

  5. LeeLee says:

I don’t normally think anyone is TOO skinny but she definitely is. She’s really cute but her body is not attractive.

  6. Kbomb says:

She says she jogs when she is going through emotional upheaval. Given how skinny she is I would say she must be a fucking basket case.

  7. Praise St. Angie! says:

though I’ve never met her, a person close to me has worked with her on various commercials and said she is, by far, the nicest celeb they’ve ever worked with.

funny, sweet, and actually TALKS to “the help”, as in has conversations with them about their lives…she doesn’t just give orders.

and yes, she’s quite thin, but she’s also TINY. my friend said she’s in great shape.

  8. Lynnie says:

She is what I like to call “Jack Russell Terrier annoying.” 😉

  9. kelbear says:

I watch Regis and Kelly every morning. Love hearing her stories about her kids, they are so cute!

  10. pebbles says:

    Can’t stand this bobblehead.

  11. Arianna says:

@ Kbomb hahaahahahhahaahahah that was hilarious!

i like her she seems sweet. exercise is the antidote to everything yep!

  12. Lindsay says:

I like her too. What does the “Avatar ‘I see you’ Way” comment mean?

  13. Julie says:

What I think she has is a form of anorexia that is through exercise. Read about it once and she seems to foot the bill. Pp who suffer from it are often just looked at as healthy, etc. but from what I heard from her and read about her, she takes it to the extent that I feel sure it’s related to weight and food and thats why she’s too dang skinny.

  14. Louisa says:

if shes anorexic, then shes NOT a good mother. kids, expecially girls see everything and internalize it. Her girls are going to have similar eating disorders. The best thing she could do as a mother is get help. I understand shes in a tough spot as people are VERY hard on celebrities bodys and this is working against her from the other side. She seems nice though, if a little superficial.

  15. pshhh says:

Thats really cool. Its a sign of a healthy-minded person if they can take stress (or any unpleasant emotion) and release it in a HEALTHY way like exercising instead of numbing the pain (with food, drugs, cigs, alchohol, or TV etc.) Lets go Kelly! 🙂

  16. Raven says:

I suspect that she’s an exercise addict. By jogging she releases endorphins and runners can get addicted to this. A friend of mine has a sister who literally became depressed when she injured her foot and was not able to run.

  17. RHONYC says:

kelly’s a down-to-earth girl from south jersey who’s had a string of good luck since she came to ny to act.

she’s a straight-up hustler that knows a good thing when she sees it and ’cause she’s a size 0 women hate on her. she’s always been tiny with a bobble-head.

  18. guesty says:

her lower body does look good especially sitting on that stool…howev those beach pics of she & her hubby on tmz awhile back were nast.

  19. Boat says:

    I like her.

  20. mamatobe says:

speaking of candidates for HGF! hello mr consuelos! OW!

  21. Wanda says:

She seems really connected with her family and her relationship with her husband is incredible. They have amazing chemistry, love and respect for one another. For those reasons, I can’t dislike her.

  22. jamie says:

she is way to thin, shes got no curves anymore! her breasts are gone shes so thin and looks anorexic not healthy.

  23. Chris says:

I saw a picture of her and her daughter (I think she is around 10) and her legs were skinnier than her daughter’s. Yikes.

  24. TeeTee says:

Her husband wants to RUN!!! sooo bad but there is no where to go.

    Keep ya chin up Buddy!!!

  25. lucy2 says:

She does seem nice, but also a little annoying. Not sure why. She and her husband are cute together though, and good for them for making it work.

I do think she’s very skinny though, and it looks like all she does is exercise. Tiny is one thing, ripped like you run marathons every week is something else.

  26. Ruffian9 says:

She is what I like to call “Jack Russell Terrier annoying.”

    Oh, I like this!

This chick is far too thin….also, ‘energetic’? I’m thinking there’s a chemical cause.

  27. Catherine says:

She is incredibly aggravating on tv and I personally do not think she looks good with that little boy body of hers. She is way too thin.

  28. latvian lady says:

From that link you can see she’s had at least 2 nose jobs.

  29. original kate says:

she reminds me of the peppy, cutesy girl in high school that everyone’s parents thought were adorable but you knew she was doing coke and banging the football team. i don’t know why, but she does.

  30. She’s too fuckin’ skinny. Where did her boobs go? Hollywood is fucked up if that is what they force female celebrities to look like. To quote another comment-If she exercises during emotional upheaval she MUST be a basket case! Maybe she should substitute a jog for a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. What a nut!

  31. Ps says:

okay yes she’s got a lot of stuff going on but I honestly don’t think people give her the credit she’d rightfully deserve
she can motivate me to do things I would not otherwise do
I think she even motivated regis
here’s the best example I can give you
and I never ever do this even if I’m ..
well I just never do it. sometimes I don’t
even bother to do this before I go out of
the house. but when she came on this morning and I admit it I was still in bed I got the hell up & cut POWER to my
television. I don’t know why it took me so long I been sick of her stink for about a year and a half. serious…( self deprecating or otherwise)
