Fox and NBC are moving around some of their top shows

Big changes are in store for TV shows starting in January.

Both Fox and NBC are changing the nights they air some of their biggest shows.

Fox will move American Idol to Wednesday and Thursday. AI has previously aired on Tuesday and Wednesday, but Fox wants to give Tuesdays to Glee and a new block of comedies including Raising Hope and Mixed Signals.

American Idol will already look vastly different, with Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler instead of Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell.

Bones will be pushed back to 9 PM on Thursday, while Fringe will move to Friday at 9 PM where it will be up against another sci-fi show, Supernatural. Fringe is already struggling for ratings, so the move to Friday may be its death knell. On the other hand, the producers of Bones must be thrilled to have American Idol for a lead-in.

House will stay in its normal time slot on Mondays.

American Idol debuts January 19, 2011.

Over at NBC, Thursday nights will become all-comedy nights. 30 Rock will move to 10 PM. Other comedies airing on Thursday include The Office, Outsourced, Community, Parks & Recreation and a new comedy called Perfect Couples.

Networks usually air dramas in the 10 PM slot, so moving 30 Rock there is a bit of a risk. NBC’s last 10 PM risk was The Jay Leno Show, which is regarded by many as the biggest TV goof up ever.

NBC is also shifting around its Law & Order franchises. Law & Order: SVU will move back an hour to 10 PM on Wednesdays, while Law & Order: LA will move to Tuesdays at 10.

Network dramas like Undercovers and FlashForward struggled to find an audience and were ultimately cancelled. Up against cable dramas like True Blood, network TV is fighting an uphill battle for viewers.

Since Lost is gone and Supernatural is lame this season, my TV watching has been cut down dramatically. I would love to enjoy one of the new shows the networks are adding, but I’m not optimistic. That’s why I’m asking Santa for the expensive Season 2 of La Femme Nikita for Christmas.

So now Bones will be opposite of Grey’s. Which is annoying.

Even more annoying is that it will always start late. AI never runs on time.

I am curious why not leave AI as it is…and let Glee start a hour later on Tuesday.

I really like raising hope, fringe isn’t so great. Overall, fox has better shows than the NBC or ABC IMO.

  3. Kirsten says:

I am so excited that Law and Order SVU moved to 10 (9 my time)… My dvd is already doing double duty with Modern Family and Criminal Minds… now I can watch my favorite LandO too! Love Benson and Stabler

  4. Lisa Turtle says:

NO! Thursdays are my TV night. I usually watch NBC, UNTIL 10, at which point I watch the Housewives (guilty pleasure).

Big goof on NBC’s part. I won’t change my viewing habits for them, I’ll just “legally” download 30 rock episodes at a later date.

  5. devilgirl says:

I was a huge Fringe fan until this season. I have watched maybe two episodes. I just hate how they have veered away from the stories they used to have and now focus solely, on this alternate universe and the dopplegangers.

Walter is still my favorite character on tv. It is a shame they have ruined the show, and Friday night will kill it, if this season’s story line hadn’t already. I liked it better when it aired on Tuesdays.

  6. Sam says:

Booooo 30 rock at 10pm!!! some of us get up at the crack of dawn and that is just too late. What a mistake!

  7. xxodettexx says:

i was actually excited when i heard about 30 rock moving to 10! one of my favorite shows and it would be nice to watch it live rather than on dvr, but that is just me! i am sure people will see it differently than someone like me that works all day and gets home around 7 to clean and make dinner and such before being able to finally settle in!

  8. Borderlined says:

I completely agree with devilgirl, Fringe has completely veered off course this season, and it’s so sad to watch because it really was a great show!

And sammie323, I commend you on your taste! My husband bought me the entire La Femme Nikita series a couple Christmases ago and it’s just great… I refuse to even give the new show, Nikita on the CW, a chance. If anyone has or does watch that show I’d love to hear how it matches up to the old USA series.

  9. Kaiser says:

I’m actually happy about this, as a fan of Bones and 30 Rock – I was tired of having to choose between them on Thursdays.

I dont understand the mindset of network execs. Dont they understand that playing musical shows turns people off even more. I watch almost nothing on networks anymore, as soon as I get into a show it gets cancelled. Cable shows are able to build an audience and mosts times they put a show on multiple times, so if you miss it you can catch it at another time. I love parenthood but I know they are moving it so that probably means it will be cancelled. They cancelled Medium which I have watched since the beginning. There seems no point to even starting a show. They just want reality and competition shows which I despise.

  11. chasingadalia says:

@Hautie – the first night of American Idol is always two hours. There’s no way Fox would put Glee at 10pm.

  12. ohplease says:

    @ borderlined

oh please! you must must watch Nikita! well at least give it a fighting chance before you toss out the idea of watching it altogether.

i have watched, Nikita the movie, the TV show and religiously followed the new Nikita.

IMO, its just as good! (and with a hell of a lot more of eye candies) *drools*

I’m glad NBC went to the 3 hour comedy block – it’s a different option vs. all the dramas at 10, plus I’m SOOO excited Parks & Rec is coming back on and staying with the other 3 comedies I love. I’ll give the new one a shot too. Don’t watch Outsourced though.
All I watch on Fox is Glee (which I’m tiring of) and Raising Hope, which is amazingly good and funny.

  14. meg says:

oh thank god! I was afraid they were cancelling Parks and Rec in order to keep the horribly offensive (and unfunny) Outsourced. Another Plus: my sweet, sweet Joel McHale will continue our “meetings” just like he promised…

  15. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

Thank goodness they aren’t canceling Parks and Recreation. I love that show 🙂

And Community had rumblings of being canceled but YAY. Joel McHale is so hot and funny and the show is so clever.

By the way folks, I don’t own a television. It is very easy to find perfectly legal ways to watch tv online, like Hulu. That’s where I watch my NBC shows and the others I just go to the network website.

  16. Persistent Cat says:

I’m happy they’re moving 30 Rock to 10pm. I hate that it’s on at 8:30 because I think it should finish the night. I don’t watch Community but I watch The Office, Outsourced and Parks and Recreation.

Outsourced has gotten a lot better since it’s first couple of episodes. I don’t find the show offensive at all, I think the culture barriers between both sides is handled well.

As for watching stuff on Hulu or NBC.com, Canadians can’t so they aren’t alternatives.

  17. cherryberry says:

So glad Thursday night will be all comedy. I’ve been saying that would be ideal for a few years now. Lets hope the new shows are better than Outsourced. Also, I am glad that SVU is going back to its 10pm space.

When is Parenthood moving? I love that show and would hate to see it cancelled.

  18. maria says:

Fringe was excellent last season, but it flailing a bit right now. The story needs to get tighter. With last week’s revelation, hopefully things will pick up pace. I will watch it or record it on Fridays.

  19. The Bobster says:

    Outsourced, Community, Parks & Recreation….

These are top shows? No, they’re pathetic excuses for sitcoms.

  20. LT says:

30Rock at 10pm = NBC FAIL. They need to drop Outsourced or move it to 8, Community @ 8:30, 30Rock @ 9 and The Office @ 9:30. Or switch 30Rock and Office.
