Can Christian Bale dial down his surly jagoff tendencies for his Oscar campaign?

Last night was also the big premiere for The Fighter, that “based on a true story” film about “Irish” Mickey Ward and his crackhead brother Dicky Eklund. Mark Wahlberg plays the boxer, and Christian Bale is crack-tinged Oscar-bait as Dicky Eklund. These are photos from the premiere – Christian brought his wife Sybil and Mark brought his wife Rhea (who is gorgeous, and really, really tall). Also there: Amy Adams, who plays Mark’s love interest in the film, and this was one of her first red carpets since having a baby – she looks gorgeous too.

Anyway, out of the whole cast, Bale is the one likely to be the centerpiece of a big Oscar campaign. That means he’s got to dial down the surly jagoff and talk more about his process, including his stunning physical transformation to play Dicky:

It takes a lot of training to be a boxer, and sometimes, even more to train one. Christian Bale, no stranger to epic weight loss, shed major pounds again for his role in the upcoming film, ‘The Fighter.’

Speaking to Latino Review, Bale said that to play the gaunt trainer Dicky Eklund, he, “was just running like crazy. I could just run for hours on end and I felt really healthy.” But did he get a little extra boost? “Oh I do a lot of coke whenever I lose weight,” he joked, clarifying, “I’m not sure if it’s so funny for this movie, to say that.”

While Bale slimmed down, his co-stars had to bulk up. Leading man Mark Wahlberg, who plays boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward, did a lot of boxing – for quite a long time.

“The movie was a go then it fell apart and I just continued to train” he said. “So after four and a half, well, three and a half years, I felt confident enough to go in there and be believable as a boxer who could possibly win the welterweight title.”

Though he still has the boxing ring he trained with in his home, it isn’t getting much use.

“As far as the regimen, my new regimen consists of a bottle of red wine and a lot of food,” Wahlberg told the site. “And I’m enjoying myself, but my wife is like, you know, ‘You – you’re starting to look really bad.'”

And as for his onscreen wife, played by Amy Adams? She was ready to rumble.

“I looked like a girl who couldn’t punch, which made me want to punch him,” she said of director, David O. Russell. “So I actually took just a couple boxing lessons, and that was fun, with Mark’s trainer, who was fantastic. And then we just did some fight choreography. That was my biggest concern. I didn’t want to hurt the girl that I was fighting.”

[From Huffington Post]

Bale has done this whole “radical physical transformation” too many times, in my opinion. I mean, I get it, he’ll do anything for the craft, he’ll do anything to make the character authentic. But I also kind of wonder if Bale has issues, I guess. We’ll see – my guess is that Bale screws up his Oscar chances somehow. Granted, I think he’ll get the nomination (for Best Supporting Actor), but I think he’ll mouth off to the wrong journalist or he’ll just pitch a fit at the glad-handing needed to campaign for an Oscar.

I think Bale’s wife is way prettier than Wahlberg’s. Amy Davis looks great like always!

I love Christian Bale and how he is always joking around interviews. I think it is great!

  2. ~M says:

You should read CB Esquire interview, than you’ll understand a LOT about him.

In my opinion he deserved an Oscar starting with American Psycho and The Machinist.

  3. devilgirl says:

Bale’s wife is a little too gummy IMO.

  4. Sara says:

Love Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and of course Marky Mark!! Great cast!!!!

  5. Praise St. Angie! says:

agree, Deeta…I think Bale’s wife is much prettier…she sorta has a young Karen Allen thing going on. and she has gorgeous hair, though I don’t like the center part.

IMO, Marky Mark’s (yes, I will always call him that) wife is kinda manly looking.

I like Amy Adams, but this is not a good look for her. Color of the dress washes her out, shoes are TOO MUCH with this dress, and her make up is too harsh. Amy, you can do so much better!

  6. Deeta says:

I love Mark W. I mean.. I think is amazing how far he has gone from hanging out with the funky bunch to becoming an A-list actor and big producer.

But he is SUCH a bad actor. He usually does well where he is involved in a car chase or running away from an explotion. But everytime I have tried to see him on a dramatic role.. it is just painful. I wonder how he will do next to Bale who is an amazing actor.

  7. brin says:

I’m rooting for him. He is so talented and deserves to win. If it was about their personality, Sean Penn would never have gotten an Oscar.

  8. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

Both of those men are soooo yummy. I love them both. Have been a fan for years and years.

Wow. I want to see this movie.

  9. carrie says:

Bale yet said he won’t campaign for himself .
The buzz on his acting on “the fighter” is HUGE .

  10. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Christian looks extra yummy. Just adore him. We don’t hear from him often and he shouldn’t mess up his chances. I am meh on Walhberg. I liked him in The Brothers and few other movies but he isn’t all that to me. I think Amy Adams looks a hawt mess, the lipstick and the shows killed it for me. I like her hair and everything but there is something so wrong with the matching lipstick and shoes.

  11. Granger says:

I wonder if Bale even cares about winning an Oscar, though? He’s pretty adamant that he’s in this biz for the acting and the artistry, and steers very clear of the fame-whore side of things. Not that you have to be a fame-whore to win an Oscar; I just think it might not be that important to him.

  12. The_Porscha says:

If Christian Bale doesn’t stop with the dieting/exercise extremes for roles, his body is going to be jacked up when he’s just a little older. He’s past the age where the body’s resiliency outweighs the body’s resistance – and he’s going to start seeing negative results if he doesn’t stop. It’s great and all that he’s willing to do whatever it takes for a role, but at a certain point, one must be pragmatic about lasting, lifelong effects.

  13. Riley says:

He definately has issues. I lost a lot of respect for him when he did American Psycho. I couldn’t sit through the movie because it was just too much, too disturbing, and should have never been made. I am glad Leo Dicaprio had the good sense to back out of that movie. That said, Christian Bale is really brilliant on screen. I remember twenty years ago or so, I just adored him because of his work in Empire from the Sun and my favorite Hallmark Hall of Fame ever, The Secret Garden. It is a shame that he now comes across as a spoiled, priviledged a*hole when he isn’t in character.

  14. Scarlet Vixen says:

I don’t like the color of Amy Adams dress–it totally washes her out.

@The_Porscha: I agree. I’ve been a big fan of Christian Bale for ages, and I’ve been concerned about his massive weight fluctuations for roles for awhile. It’s really unhealthy. 🙁

  15. carrie says:

@Riley: American Psycho is amazing(funny and crazy)and the scene with a naked bloody Bale with the chainsaw is cult.Every quote in this movie is cult!

  16. caramia says:

Gosh, I hope he doesn’t dial down because the Oscars need some kind of interest instead of just a bunch of over-botoxed anorexic bimbos who can’t frown or smile at will while reciting their intros from a teleprompter, go Christian baby, go!

  17. cuter says:

dieting for roles is not a great acting in my opinion. I hate when an actor is awarded just because he has dieted for a stupid role.

Sorry but Chritian is not hot, and he really looks like a CRAZY DOUCHEBAG.

  18. Oi says:

Even after the rant incident, I still don’t find him to be that big a jagoff. Barring that incident, he is said to be a nice guy, just don’t bother him too much.

He deserves an Oscar, for something, anything. Jeez Oscar voters.

  19. dread pirate cuervo says:

Christian has amazing bone structure. I wonder if his “joke” about coke diets is hiding in plain sight?

  20. Jeri says:

He’s a great actor and unlike others, he doesn’t look for fame based on who he is or his personal life (Tom C / Brad P), he really seems to concentrate on the job at hand and not how famous he is or will be.

He has flaws but that makes him more real to me.

  21. Solveig says:

I love the way he jokes, I love his devotion to the characters he portrays (even the stupid ones), I love the fact that he doesn’t care if he sounds crazy.
I don’t love this D’Artagnan style and the outfit he’s wearing (a sweatsuit?)

Amy Adams is so cute! But sometimes it takes time to understand that it’s her the person that I’m watching… she’s affected by a strange form of natural face-morphing.

  22. Riley says:

My bad. I don’t think he was in the Secret Garden, it was some other kid. But still I loved him in Empire from the Sun.

  23. Catherine says:

Both men have lovely wives. I am really hoping that Mark is up for an Oscar as well. He is excellent.

  24. erikarain says:

As far as acting goes … don’t personality issues sort of go with the territory? At least he channels most of his crazy into making (usually very good) movies, instead of wasting time courting the paps with staged photo ops.

Bottom line: Bale can be as douche-y as he wants to be, and he’ll still be one of my favorite actors.

  25. Danny says:

Man, those red shoes sure look uncomfortable. Ladies, can you really wear those things all night? How do you do it?

  26. erikarain says:

@Riley – you are probably thinking of Heydon Prowse, who played Colin in the early-90s Secret Garden (the one with Maggie Smith.)

Bale was in Little Women, though.

  27. Riley says:

@erikarain: it was Barret Oliver I was thinking of. The Hall Mark Hall of Fame version of The Secret Garden came out right around Empire from the Sun, around 1986 or so.

  28. latam says:

chrisitian bale is talented but he is a MEGA douche. Not really something I can be a fan of.

    Btw Batman, rubbish. Ridiculous voice.

  29. latam says:

Oh and mark wahlberg is a bad actor.

Ugly too, he looks like a gargoyle.

  30. Bodhi says:

Bale doesn’t give a fig about winning an Oscar, never has & never will. And if he DOES win, it sure as hell won’t be because he lost a lot of weight. He is a phenomenal actor & deserves recognition.

I fell in love with him when he was Laurie in Little Women & even more so when he was in Newsies… Gawd did I love that movie!!

  31. prell says:

I want christian bale to scream at me and be a big angry jerk in bed with me. Not even kidding. When I heard that tape of him going off (which, by the way, was totally out of character according to everyone who ever worked with him) I just loved it. I know it is sick, but I feel like having freaky angry sex with this hot hot man. LOVE HIM.

  32. lucy2 says:

I think Bale is probably one of the best actors I’ve ever seen. Sooner or later he should win an Oscar, but I agree that he probably doesn’t care too much about it, sees it as more of the Hollywood machine than the art.
Great cast, the film looks good, though I agree Mark may be a little out of his depth with Amy and Christian.

  33. Lori says:

Love him, love him in American Psycho. I didn’t read the book, but that is Ellis for you, dark and twisted.

I think one of my favorite quotes from CB is that he modeled his character in American Psycho after Tom Cruise.

  34. Ohforf says:

I REALLY don’t feel that he is a jagoff. He’s been very clear about how he will talk about his work, but he wants to keep his personal life private. Sometimes journalists will push a bit too hard and he’ll get snappy, but I’m okay with that. Aside from his one (understandable in hindsight if you know the first thing about acting) outburst at the lighting guy, you never hear anything about him other than that he’s a nice guy and great to work with.

  35. icantbelievethis says:

I loved American Psycho. So creepy and confusing and he was great!

  36. kelly says:

Christian, don’t you dial it down for nobody.

I plan to make you a five star general in my arse-kicking bad tempered army when my rage-fueled plans for world domination come to fruition, and that job description includes cussing each other out and breaking a whole bunch of shit during angry sex marathons, so DONT GO CHANGING DAMN YOU!

And I HATE the word jagoff. It’s always been JACKOFF in my world. Jagoff is so f*cking nothing and moderated. Come on.

  37. Mario says:

Mark Walberg is a terrible actor and always the weakest link in every movie he’s in. Christian Bale needs to get over himself and drop his nasty attitude. Amy Adams as always is wonderful.

  38. belle Epoch says:

CANNOT understand why people like Christian Bale. I guess he is a good actor but I can’t get past his horrible personality. There’s a reason he gets the roles he does.

CANNOT understand why people tolerate the misogynistic American Psycho. The book includes scenes like forcing a starving rat up a woman’s private parts. That isn’t “satire” or “humor,” it’s disgusting and indefensible.

  39. lilas says:

christian and sibi so beautiful together
great actor good luck for the oscar
