French first lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy: Negative gossip about me is part of my job

Hello! Magazine has a new interview with hot French first lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy and I found myself impressed with the way she views the gossip press and journalists. She realizes that if she wants to use them for publicity for her projects she’s got to take the gossip that goes along with that. She says it doesn’t bother her and she understands that journalism is a difficult job and that people are going to talk crap about her.

40 year-old former model and singer Carla Bruni Sarkozy made headlines around the world when she married divorced French president Nicolas Sarkozy, 53, in February after a whirlwind womance. She’s a controversial figure and once had an affair with the married son of her boyfriend at the time. The son’s wife is a novelist and wrote a book inspired by her husband’s infidelity in which she described the other woman as “a praying mantis.” Carla has had relationships with Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, and Donald Trump and has said that shequickly tires of monogamy and prefers “polygamy.” [details from Wikipedia]

In her Hello! Interview, you can see how Bruni she copes with the negative press about her. She just figures it’s part of the deal and that people are going to say negative things no matter what she does. I don’t know if she’s being manipulative by phrasing it so cleverly, but her flattery and attitude won me over:

Do you get angry about some of the things the press write?
“No, I think it’s a very hard job. Journalism isn’t easy. Many of my friends are journalists, so I know it’s a special, creative job. I respect the press and have never had any problems with it, so whatever they write, I don’t really care. It’s impossible to control the press, so there’s no point trying.”

Not everybody sees it that way…
“With my modeling and songwriting, maybe the press is manipulating me but I’m using them to spread my work and image. So it’s a deal. I don’t feel stressed by it. I could have chosen to be a doctor or a lawyer. I’ve had a lucky life so far.”

Why didn’t you become a doctor or a lawyer?
“Too much studying. Maybe I’m too lazy for it. But everybody is free to chose a job that doesn’t have a public image. And there are many fantastic jobs. So when I chose those two jobs no one forced me to do so. And when I married my husband I chose it. So I will not say, ‘It’s so hard and I feel like a victim.’ I’m not the victim of anything. And if people don’t like my work or my image they are allowed to say so. This is democracy. It’s very important.”

[From Hello! Magazine, print edition, July 22, 2008]

How awesome is this woman? She should give seminars for celebrities on how to cope with fame. Of course Bruni has to have it a lot easier in France than the celebrities stalked by the paparazzi in America. She said that she loves to go to the movies with her husband, the President, and that sometimes they slip in and out of the theater with only a few people noticing them and they usually just say hi without freaking out.

Bruni may have had a book written about her homewrecking, but she knows that comes with the territory and she doesn’t really care. Can our French readers please enlighten me about the way she’s portrayed in the press there? I would assume the gossip culture is much different.

Carla Bruni Sarkozy is promoting her latest album, her third, titled “Comme si de rien n’était,” which means “As if Nothing Ever Happened.” Here she is singing “Quelqu’Un M’A Dit” which is from her first album released in 2003.

The most negative thing I can think of is, “you married a droopy-eyed nerd, you gorgeous woman.”

  2. Blackalicious says:

Her face looks too tight and weird. She has money – why is she flying all the way down to some obscure doctor in South America? Save a few bucks elsewhere, like on window treatments or some shit.

  3. k says:

    I think she’s butt ugly!

  4. snappyfish says:

she is a star-f**ker. Always has been. The only thing that sets her apart from the average aformentioned person is that she has money in her own right.

The modeling she did was work purchased by Daddy. Jagger and Clapton have both been famously unkind to her in the past. She was the other woman in the Sarkozy divorce. She is using this poor man for publicity and she will tire of him.

At least she is honest of how she handles the press, as a beauty, I don’t see it.

  5. Chrissy says:

We live in Germany right now and I can tell you from everything I read/heard, she was HATED during her “courtship” with the President. She seems to have won people over with her great appearance with the Royal Family in England. People were falling all over themselves for her then. But initially, it seemed to be a lot of embarrassment for the French people. When we were in Paris, they were all over the papers … surprised they can go to movies w/o being noticed!

  6. Lara says:

CB, your bias amazes me sometimes. You call Sienna Miller a slut for having an affair with a married man, but Carla Bruni who did the same thing (and adding insult to injury chose to make her partners son her babys father) is in your book awesome. I know we all have our favourites and are more willing to forgive them their little inadequacies, but still.
I think Carla Bruni is beautiful and every now and then i love listening to her music, but just because she knows how to play the media and gives the right answers, doesn’t distract from what she is: a woman who would sell her firstborn to get what she wants.

  7. cara says:

    I like her lyrics….and I think she’s hot

  8. Celebitchy says:

@Lara – the difference is that this woman has a much different attitude about the media coverage of her. Sienna Miller bitches and moans about how the media detracts from her real acting career while she goes and cavorts with a married man. Miller complains about the press all the time and this woman is saying “whatever, it’s part of my job.” If Miller had that attitude and gave the same quotes as these, which are some of the best-stated quotes I’ve seen from a celebrity about the media, I would give her kudos too. I’m not calling this woman a saint by any means, I’m saying her attitude is pretty impressive.

  9. Kaiser/ Hippacrat says:

Newsweek & NYT have both done profiles about her in the past few weeks, and both were glowing. They did some “man-on-the-Parisian-streets” reporting and apparently, the French people like that Carla is much more engaged in the social diplomacy of the office of First Lady. Sarko’s last wife (Cecile, right?) hated doing anything in the way of photos, tours, political anything.

And btw – didn’t Cecile have a long-running affair with an American? Didn’t she leave Sarko? And then he started dating Carla?

  10. Kaiser/ Hippacrat says:

Bloody hell. I’m being moderated again. Seriously – last week CB ate like five of my comments.

And strangely, it’s always on the ZOMG HOMEWRECKER threads.

  11. Syko says:

Kaiser, it’s not you, it’s not personal. 🙂 There’s a word filter set to catch some of the words commonly used by spammers and when we inadvertently use them, we get stuck in the chute until someone comes along and sees that we’re not really trying to get you to come over to Loveforsale.com. I’ve tried to figure out the words so I could avoid using them, but no luck so far.

  12. kimmi says:

Whoa, I thought this woman was a slut before, but this takes the cake. Her then boyfriend’s married son?!!! Damn!

  13. Kaiser says:

Syko – 🙂 If I was just being moderated, that’s one thing. But several of my comments just disappeared. I swear, I’m not trying to sell anything. *crosses fingers* Especially not The Olive Garden.

  14. geronimo says:

Actually, I think this is a separate problem. I’ve had comments eaten that never show up AT ALL!! I post and they just disappear into thin air. One was just a correction of a headline, 3 harmless words, nothing suspect at all.

  15. Kaiser says:

Yeah, that just happened to me on this thread, Geronimo…

  16. Kaiser says:

Newsweek & NYT have both done pieces about her in the past few weeks, and both were glowing. They did some “man-on-the-Parisian-streets” reporting and it seems the French people like that Carla is much more engaged in the social diplomacy of the office of First Lady. 17. Kevin says:

Not you Kaiser,,,just happened to me 2 times over in the Joel Madden thread….the mystery of cyberspace!

  18. Celebitchy says:

sometimes the spam filter goes wonky especially when it’s a dating/love/cheating type thread. I will look for your comments sorry about that!

  19. Sue says:

I admire her because she’s a stand-up and be proud ho?? A whore is a whore, they all have reasons-this one seems to do it as a profession-cool.I know have dabbled in ho-land myself. From personal experience it is a profound moment of self-centeredness that gets it “kicking”.But this one really works it baby!!!

  20. Kaiser says:

Sorry to whine, CB. It just seemed like all of a sudden last week, every comment of mine was being moderated. It made me sad, because I live to defend homewreckers. 🙂

Sorry about the double post, people.

  21. Celebitchy says:

@geronimo those 2 comments got put in the spam filter, which is like no man’s land and and has thousands of spam in it. One of them had a couple of links and the other one was really benign but it had two single quotes and maybe that did it.

@Kaiser your comment went to moderation and not the spam folder due to a spam keyword.

@Kevin your comment went directly to the spam folder. You used the word “tattoo” three times and I’m pretty sure that’s why.

  22. Lara says:

In case this is still the Carla Bruni thread and not the missing-posts thread 😉 , i asked my sister who lives in Paris, and she very much backs up what chrissie said. Since that UK visit where she was dressed in Dior from head to toe, they like her more. Prior to that “mattress” as in ” i’ll spread my legs for everyone who comes around” was one of the nicest things the media said about her. And they have realized that she is the best looking First Lady around, which always helps 🙂 .

  23. Mairead says:

Ah well. it could be worse I suppose 😆

Anyhoo – Kaiser is right, Bruni was most assuredly NOT “t’other wummin” in Sarko’s first marriage. They had long-since separated, but she was resurrected for the purposes of the election only. Everything went back to normal and they divorced after the election as predicted. Then his affair with Bruni could become known.

She is not being critiscised now as they have married and therefore has certain diplomatic status as consort. She’s basically winning the media over by just smiling, and saying nice non-confrontational things. 🙄 And it must be said, I heard the single from the latest album – and I quite liked it.

But my beouf with this couple isn’t her – it’s the undemocratic Napoleon-arse she’s married to. I was staunchly against the last Taoiseach (prime minister) for Ireland as he lied to Europe and told the Irish people to vote again and do it properly on the Nice Treaty. And short-arse up there allegedly told Ireland we’d have to vote again on the Lisbon Treaty. With the implied threat that we’d better get it done properly this time.

As it happens I’m very pro-EU and was primarily pro-Lisbon, but this kind of caper doesn’t reassure me whatsoever, and to blantantly ignore the democratic wishes of a soverign nation is disgraceful. 👿
It’s enough to make you listen to Libertas!!

  24. geronimo says:

CB, thanks for that, although I wasn’t expecting you to go looking for mine. They were old and not in the least important. The only reason I posted on this was just to confirm that Kaiser’s problem was a separate issue from the mod one.

From what I read about Sarko and Brunei from the point they got together, the French were far more incensed with HIM, not her, accusing him of carrying on, as one editorial put it, like a Hollywood movie star and behaving in a very undignified manner. They were a bit sniffy about her too but mainly it was his behaviour that seems to be getting up their conservative noses. Personally, I like her, she’s intelligent, attractive and her music’s interesting.

  25. Pont Neuf says:

I’m sorry to say this, but I find it outrageous that the media (and consequently, the public) are being kind to this utterly despicable harlot.

She may have been a successful model and a most proficient whore who basically did very little of importance thanks to her family’s prominent position, but outside of that she is worthless. Or at least, as worthless as every other trashy whore.

She cannot sing, her music is vapid and dull (I do realize that about 90% of French pop is vapid and dull, though) and the main reason why she is known is that she has been ‘the other woman’ in several break ups, infamously had an affair with her lover’s own son – who then broke up with his pregnant wife because this slag also became pregnant – and then married this obnoxious crypto-fascist dwarf who probably kisses Hitler’s portrait every night, right before dreaming about new ways to achieve world dominance through utterly despicable means.

I think it is ridiculous that anyone would start liking her just because she acts demure and dresses well. 🙄

  26. Kaiser says:

It takes two to fuck, Pont Neuf. Did she steal your husband too?

  27. Frederico says:

It’s at about this time that the French people should be asking Marie Antoinette’s ghost for forgiveness.

  28. Kaiser says:

What I find ridiculous, Pont Neuf, is that anyone would heap so much hatred on a woman for screwing around, while giving the men involved a free pass.

If she is a slut, then those men she was with were sluts too.

  29. Lauri says:

She’s trashy and unworthy of respect, simple as that. I feel that way about anyone who thinks it is perfectly ok to screw around with a married person (and of course think that of the married person who cheats, as well). She may be pretty on the outside, but inside she is an ugly person.

  30. Sandra says:

Cb s blog was not about commentary on her personal life.whatever you think of someone you are allowed to be impressed by their attitude on separate issues. Carla realizes no one forced her to choose life in the public eye. She realizes she can t use the press to promote herself, then complain when they suffer the interest good and bad that comes with it. If you love acting but not media attn- choose a different proffession and take your love of acting to the local theaters.

  31. Lauri says:

Oh, I understand that, Sandra. I just feel that since she is nothing more than a sleaze and a slut, her opinions on anything, in my mind, are completely worthless. I know some may think I am harsh for feeling that way, but I just do.

  32. saintdevil says:

She once said in an interview that she wants to have sex with a man who has power over an atomic bomb.

    Pretty disturbing.

And I think she’s ugly, her face looks stretched and weird.

  33. Lola says:

I like what Simon Cowell called her, a sexy minx. She won me over when she came to the UK and didn’t give a damn about what was said about her. She is not hoity toity and she doesn’t talk when she is not asked. She has some class.

Sarko’s wife cecile left him before he got with Bruni.

  34. Little Hutt says:

I don’t know if she’s being manipulative by phrasing it so cleverly, but her flattery and attitude won me over
Oh no please! Don’t be fooled! You’re breaking my heart. She’s just a pretty face manipulative as hell. And she’s not that clever usually.
What I really can’t stand about her is how she seems to be so full of BS. Falsy lady, not foxy.

  35. a says:

She has been famous for being manipulative. She can not care less about the rest of the world because this girl has her father’s money. She lives what she wants, buy what she wants and F*ck what she wants.

The British is impressed by her because she can dress. Maureen Dawd in the US even wrote a piece to praise her because she can smile. But, the French is embarrassed by her. Her charm is nothing but only a typical French woman. Every woman in Paris looks exactly like her. Nothing special about her.

The rumour now is she is pregnant with Sarko’s child. It’s not for love. It’s for her own vanity to walk down the history.

Don’t forget she is an Italian, actually not French.

  36. frewt says:

I agree with Snappy, the woman is a star f*cker, albeit a very up-market one. She’s an extreme social climber with a superiority complex who knows how to string a few words together to appear humble and generous. Don’t be fooled by the act.

  37. Snowblood says:

Well, I like her. Any woman who lives what she wants, buys what she wants and f~cks whom she wants is absolutely cool in my book. More power to her,I say. I like her.

  38. Other Karen says:

It’s nice to see a pretty young thing who can pull off nice fashions as First Lady in any country. As long as she behaves herself during her husband’s term . . .

  39. Pont Neuf says:

Kaiser, of course those men are dirty sluts in every single sense. However, their sleazy shenanigans are not being discussed here.

Also, no one is trying to justify their selfishness, vulgarity and inability to remain faithful with something so banal as pretty dresses, timid smiles and a nonchalant attitude towards criticism.

I am not saying that Carla Bruni is a succubus who preys on unsuspecting men, but her behaviour is pretty disgusting and I don’t think that anyone should find her any more tolerable just because she has decided to stop behaving like a seedy groupie and started pretending that she is a lady.

  40. Anna says:

Just to give my point of view as a french woman, I agree a bit with Geronimo. Judgements were mostly made towards him in the beginning. Simply because the guy was recently elected and instead of actually doing something (like, his work), he was more focused on dating a singer-former model and go on vacation, which pissed people off. Especially the almost-half of the country which didn’t vote for that future dictator troll (yeah, I hate him). Of course nobody liked Carla because she was considered part of the problem. Personnaly, I never liked her before and find her music kinda shitty. Marrying Sarko is also not a great character sign in my book.
As for the “conservative” comment, it makes me laugh a bit because french like gossips just like everyone else, but when it comes to real politic issues, both are usually well separated (Mitterand had a kid with his mistress and he still got re-elected).

  41. Nan says:

Comme=like. Si=if. Like if nothing happened.

  42. geronimo says:

Anna, if it’s my ‘conservative noses ‘comment you’re referring to, of course it’s true. It was writ large in the comments at the time. Not an insult at all, the French were quite rightly apalled at how their newly-elected president (despised and loathed by many French people) was carrying on PUBLICLY. I know the French don’t give a hoot about how people in high office conduct themselves privately – it’s one of the things I most like about them! But please don’t tell the French are not conservative in this respect.

  43. Nan says:

Someone from France, Switzerland, Belgium, Quebec and even Haiti needs to go on that Wiki page of Carla’s and fix all of the poor translations. Comme=like, rien=nothing. Or do I have to fix it?

  44. Nan says:

He looks more like a Rabbi than a prime minister.

  45. Anna says:

I guess I didn’t get exactly what you meant Geronimo. I didn’t take it as an insult at all, there are unfortunately a lot of uptight people in this country and Bruni has been called a lot of bad names. The way I remember the bashing was not about moving on (and rumours about his failed mariage were running already during the election), but by doing so publicly he was showing he had only his personal life in mind.
But hey, I often avoided magazines with his face on it and my memory’s failing, so I believe you. It was just my perception.

  46. geronimo says:

“The way I remember the bashing was not about moving on (and rumours about his failed mariage were running already during the election), but by doing so publicly he was showing he had only his personal life in mind.”

Lol, I think we have crossed wires here, Anna. That’s exactly what I was saying in my other post!! There were snotty comments about Brunei but they were mostly about the way Sarko was behaving like an idiot in public, and how the French were apalled by his lack of dignity and professionalism, less so his private life. Our recollection is similar I think, we just have a different understanding of conservative in this context. We are in agreement!

  47. Lola says:

Celia (sp?) did leave Sarkozy for another man, whom she married very recently in New York. I read an amazing article in Vogue several months ago about the ex Mrs. Sarkozy. She definitely left him way – then they got back together for appearance sake soon after the election – then she left again. I have never read that Bruni had anything to do with it.

Anyway…people cheat…it doesn’t mean they are terrible, horrible people. Sh@t happens, love is messy…my thinking is not to cast stones…but people in the U.S. get so inflamed over infidelity….

  48. Lara says:

But nobody is accusing Sarkozy of infidelity. Or am i missing something? It’s Carla Bruni who’s the cheater. Not in this relationship, but ask the family Enthoven and you might get the picture. Shit happens, that’s true. Not everybody who happened to have an affair is automatically pure evil. But living with Enthoven sr., cheating on him with Enthoven jr., who at the time was married, you gotta have some balls for that. And apparently it wasn’t the first time for her being the other woman. And i would bet quite some cash that once Sarkos presidency is over, she will walk out on him too.

  49. La Reine Marie says:

I am sorry to dissapoint all you Carla fans, but I think she is a dog. What is all the fuss about? Paris is full of whores like her; she just has $$. I hope Le Presidante DUMPS her ugly ass.

  50. Nora says:

I’m french and I am actually impressed with the way she carries herself ABROAD. Other than that, she is a trainwreck…
She can’t handle anyone writing anything about her or her family, but she brings her son along whenever she knows she’s going to be photographed, and she has overshadowed every single diplomatic trip sarkozy has ever been on (on or to :s ?).
    But that’s just my opinion.

  51. Nora says:

Anna : it’s not about us being uptight, it’s about him behaving like a hollywood starlet. And Carla Bruni is a symptom, although not the disease.
Mitterand had a secret love child, and nobody knew about it. Now whenever Sarkozy is getting his hair done we have to hear about it on the news…

  52. ZG says:

Carla Bruni is a rich kid born beautiful and used to getting what she wants. She said she had an affair with Jagger while Jerry Hall was pregnant because she “was not looking for a relationship at the time”. She betrayed her boyfriend and had affair with his married son, splitting their marriage too. The woman does not care about anything but herself and her ego. I reckon she is with Sarkozy for the power trip. She is a poor excuse for a human being.

  53. Pierr F. Lherisson says:

Carla Bruni Sarkozi looks like a certain Carla X I knew except that Carla X looked and behaved like a Tom Boy.
