Jennifer Aniston gives an interview to Star Magazine

Somehow Star Magazine secured a maybe-exclusive interview with Jennifer Aniston in which she promotes Marley & Me, her upcoming dog-centered film with Owen Wilson. The movie is not scheduled for release until Christmas, so I’m kind of perplexed why she’s talking about it now to a gossip magazine. Star has actual quotes from Aniston, it’s written out like an interview and there are no “insiders” or “onlookers” mentioned, so we can assume it’s legitimate. I can’t remember reading an interview with her since she was promoting her kiss on Dirt with Courteney Cox in early 2007. That’s a year and a half ago.

Aniston gives pretty straightforward and honest answers and says that she bonded with her canine costar in the film and that she loves having dogs because they help welcome her home every day. She says children are a little harder to work with than dogs when asked about it. That’s probably because they have to remember their lines and dogs are just being themselves, but behaving on cue.

Star doesn’t provide a context for the interview or mention if it was over the phone or anything. The introduction just focuses on the plot of Aniston’s film Marley & Me, which is based on a book about a couple with a misbehaving dog. Aniston calls it “a beautiful examination of this marriage and life.”

In Marley & Me, you worked with a dog. But what was it like with your human costar, Owen Wilson?
It was instant chemistry. I felt comfortable with him, like we’d known each other for a while.

And how about the dog who played Marley. Was it tough to say good-bye?
Oh, that was hard. I was quite emotional. We really bonded. The whole experience was special and extraordinary. We did sort of become a family. Everyone was so invested in the story.

Is it harder to work with dogs than kids?
Children actually were trickier than the dogs! It was so funny, because in a lot of the takes you hear Mathilda, the dog trainer, saying either ‘back, back, back, move, sit!’ while we’re literally doing our dialogue. We had to tune it out.

You must have been used to the commotion, since you have two dogs. What’s so special about being a dog owner?
It’s nice to open your door and have somebody run to you and jump on you and kiss you because they cannot believe that you are actually back. They are so excited; they love you. It’s quite simple.

Besides your love of dogs, what else makes you happy?
A sunset makes me happy. Really silly things, like being with my friends with a bottle of wine and some nice cheese.

So then, what makes you unhappy?
I hate arguments. I don’t like bad feelings between people. I hate negativity. You have to have a positive approach to life.

We really haven’t heard much from Aniston directly and most of the stories about her have focused on gossip about her love life with John Mayer. If she did give an exclusive interview to Star and this isn’t from a press session then she deserves a lot of credit for playing nice. Just last week they had a big story about how she was too clingy and driving Mayer away. The article relied heavily on photos of the couple to make an unflattering point about their relationship. It probably wasn’t out yet when she gave this interview, but they’ve run plenty of other rude stories about her in the past. She’s definitely being gracious by giving this interview and you wonder if it was strained at all.

I believe that stars often give interviews to magazines as a “tradeoff” for not running something else.

There’s no way to know if that was the case here, but it would explain the odd timing and the willingness to give an interview to Star, which is not the caliber of magazine Aniston usually deals with. Didn’t she do a Vanity Fair cover a couple of years ago?

It would also explain the relatively softball questions (“What makes you happy?”) instead of the type of questions you know they’d rather be asking (“So, are you trying to get pregnant by John Mayer?”).

Either that or she was doing pre-interviews for the movie’s Christmas release – a lot of November/December issues of full-color magazines are written during August/September – and Star just used the text before it was supposed to.

Last time I did math 1997 wasn’t a year and a half ago. Sorry to sound snarky but it stood out a lot to me.

i’m confused.. did i time travel???

  4. geronimo says:

Those questions sound like something you’d ask a 7 year old. The only thing missing is ‘what’s your favourite colour?’

Probably just a cobbled together collection of old random comments, a filler piece.

  5. Celebitchy says:

Ok so I’m off 10 years. I’ll fix it.

  6. Alexis says:

uhg. Anyone who is so uptight about arguing should not be in a relationship at all.

  7. daisy424 says:

Marley & Me is a great book.
They are both great at comedy, this should be a good film.

  8. Celebitchy says:

Note: I accidentally closed the comments on this post for a while after I edited it. Sorry about that and they’re obviously fixed now.

  9. Kaiser says:

Um… so the header pic is Pity Party with her own dog, right? Because I thought Marley was supposed to be a yellow lab (with big floppy ears *squeal*).

  10. Omar says:

She’s so needy that she will drive that young man away. The reason she did the interview so many months ahead of the release is to take some attention away from her ex and his two new children. What a selfish and childish woman.

  11. Victoria says:

Jennifer sounds like a lonely and depressed person. Plus the interview dosen’t sound like something she would do. Especially to STAR. No wonder she and Brad went their own way. Shee said dogs were there to welcome her home every day and love on her unconditionaly. Well, children do that. Brad always wanted children do that same thing. But, Jennifer could not leave children un-attended like she can the dogs. Those, she can crate, and go on. John Mayer and her will be bored with each other soon. Jen has a horrible time committing to anything or anyone. Even her BFF Courtney has said this in an old friends interview. Jennifer just laughed and said, ” so what’s your point”?. Courtney replied, ” I guess in your old lonely age you will be sitting on MY front porch with David and me, just the three of us.” She did not laugh after that. But, it has been years now and she is still single and can’t committ, and blames her mother. ( Barbara Walter interview ) I love Jennifer and feel so sorry for her. Maybe one day her prince charming will show up on that beach during a sunset that she loves so much.

  12. Mae says:

I think Jen is as genuine as they get. She is a class act and everyone says how easy she is to get along with. My love and positive energy her way.

  13. mollination says:

Kaiser, why does it have to be a “pity-party” because she is taking her dog on a walk?

I gurantee if it was angelina walking around it would be, “Angelina plotting to take another woman’s man while walking her dog.”

And if it was britney it would be negative spin on her too. She just MUST be doing something stupid, whitetrash, or irresponsible while walking her dog.

Bias much? Leave J.A. alone already! The media decides what image they are going to give a celeb and everyone gets brainwashed and goes along with it like little lemmings. Sorry I’m being snippy…I think I must be on celeb burnout. I’m done now.

I love that she is a dog person! I don’t know if I’m “allowed” to express a positive opinion of Jen ( 😉 ), but, for me, there is nothing in the world like coming home to cute critters that have no other goal than to love on you.

And yes, I do plan on having kiddos one day, but for now I’m ok with my non-talking furbabies

  15. vdantev says:

Most people in Hollywood say that working with kids or dogs is the first step to career death. By my career timeclock, Jenn should have taken her top off in a movie or otherwise tried to revamp her career with a new sexy persona.

  16. czarina says:

I have no strong feelings about JA one way or the other, but many people who comment about her (negatively) use words like “sad”, “lonely”, “depressed” and the whole ‘Brad left her for Angelina’-thing is still alive and well after all these years.
So my question is, is this Jen’s fault or the media’s fault? Does Jen actually make an effort to come across as the poor, jilted, ex-Mrs.Pitt who deserves sympathy…or is this an angle the media plays up in the pictures it chooses to print or the stories written about her? (presumably in order to connect her to B&A and keep people buying magazines, etc.)

  17. Nan says:

F that! F you all! Imagine what it is like for her coming out of the shower & looking at that face w/out makeup & hair slicked back? Age not a factor. Just that big face, big chin & clay nose. Ugh. Sorry, it must be hell trying to live up to something you know you are truly not. Her hair has always hidden her flaws & people who are unattractive themselves have always fallen for this. All the money in the world could never entice me to trade places w/her. Coming out of the shower is the tell all. Raw & true! Deal w/it.

  18. Nan says:

p.s. I notice where I click onto & where others go on here. Interesting.

  19. All I know is that dog is damn cute.

  20. someone says:

I really doubt she gave an interview to “Star” mag..Im sure its just a bunch of snippits from past interviews..And I don’t find her needy or sad or desperate, or any of those negative things the haters say..I think she is so over Brad and Angelina..the media and the haters love to keep it going..otherwise they would just be left with Brangalina to talk about..and you can only say “the most beautiful family in the world” just so many times.

  21. I choose me says:

I agree with czarina “…is this an angle the media plays up in the pictures it chooses to print or the stories written about her? (presumably in order to connect her to B&A and keep people buying magazines, etc.)”

and no Bodhi there’s no rule that says if you like AJ, you can’t say positive things about JA or ‘gasp’ even like her.

    I like em both.

  22. Laura says:

Oh, yeah Nan! It must be so painful to look in the mirror and see her face, right? Fortunately, you probably look great when coming out of the shower, something like Brooke Shields in the blue lagoon days, right?
