Golden Globes recap: The winners, the losers, and the bitchfaces

golden_globe_awards_7_22_wenn3170057

I’m always struggling to find a format for awards-show recaps that will please everybody, so here’s how I’m going to do it today. Below is the list of winners for the 2011 Golden Globes, and I’m going to make little comments about them where I see fit, within the list. Also, thanks to Entertainment Weekly for their very accessible list!

Best Motion Picture – Drama
The Social Network
*Deserved, I guess. I liked the movie, but I don’t understand why it’s being promoted and pushed as the film that defines a generation and junk. But yes, it is well-written and well-acted, and it’s totally a solid movie.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Colin Firth, The King’s Speech
* YAY! If Colin doesn’t win the Oscar this year, I might have to shank someone. He’s amazing in TKS. Also, “man love” – I’m totally using that. ALL THE TIME.

Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical
The Kids Are All Right
* This movie totally disappointed me, and once again, I don’t get the way it’s been promoted as some groundbreaking film. It’s uneven, the script has issues and Julianne Moore gave the stronger performance.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
Natalie Portman, Black Swan
* Her speech was bizarre, correct? Like, LOOK AT ME I’M AMAZING. I think she was aiming for humility, but she seemed full of herself. In my opinion. Oh, and Benjamin Millepied looks like he’s kind of afraid of her. Yeah, I said it.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical
Paul Giamatti, Barney’s Version
* I want to know what he said about Halle Berry. I bet it was dirty as hell.

Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical
Glee
* Meh.

Best Director – Motion Picture
David Fincher, The Social Network

Cecil B. DeMille Award
Robert De Niro
* His speech was crazy! I think somebody wrote it for him, and De Niro simply doesn’t give a good God damn. And how cheesy was Matt Damon during his speech?

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
*The Jeremy Irons stuff was cute, and I admire her for her late-in-life success. But the real star was Helena Bonham Carter’s completely unapologetic bitchface when she lost.

Best Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Best Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical
Laura Linney, The Big C

Best Foreign Language Film
In a Better World (Denmark)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jane Lynch, Glee
* Jane made a not-so-veiled remark about Lea Michele and how Lea ignored Hailee Steinfield, correct? That was like the ONLY time the camera didn’t dramatically pan to Lea and her Evening of Over-Acting For The Camera.

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture
Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network
* I liked what he said about the female role models for his daughter. Is he a dick? Sure. But he’s a brilliant dick, you know?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Claire Danes, Temple Grandin
* I loved the movie, I loved Claire as Temple, and I love Temple herself. I thought it was amazing that Claire and Temple embraced first, and that Claire honored Temple’s work so well. Also, Hugh Dancy is extremely bored at these events.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Al Pacino, You Don’t Know Jack
*Al is a delight. He has no idea where he is, what he’s doing, but he goes up and makes his speeches anyway.

Best Animated Feature Film
Toy Story 3

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical
Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
* The standing ovation was nice, but I’ll repeat: Julianne Moore gave the stronger performance. Also, this is the category Angelina Jolie lost in. Angelina was classy and she stood for Annette, though.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Social Network
* Um, I kind of find Trent Reznor hot now. I used to find him hot, back in the day, and now I do again. I was really impressed with how he was able to rattle off all of the names of everybody involved in the film WITHOUT A WRITTEN SPEECH. I hate when people bring their speeches. You’re an actor, remember your damn line. Trent showed ‘em how it was done.

Best Original Song – Motion Picture
“You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me,” Burlesque
Music and lyrics by Diane Warren

Best Television Series – Drama
Boardwalk Empire
* Meh. Mad Men deserved it.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series – Drama
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
* I love Buscemi, but I wanted My Beloved Hamm Dong to win.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Chris Colfer, Glee
* He was cute, and I think he was genuinely surprised.

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Carlos
* Steven Spielberg just took out a fatwa against this TV Movie. Also, did you see Tom Hanks’ bitchface when The Pacific lost? He was bitching about it at his table too.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Katey Sagal, Sons of Anarchy
* I love Katey Sagal, she’s awesome. I don’t even watch the show and I love her.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Christian Bale, The Fighter
* I’m still so, so surprised with how Christian Bale is really making the effort to NOT be a jackass. It’s wonderful, and if he can keep it up, he’s going to win the Oscar.

I’m always glad when RPatz is featured in anything on Celebitchy because I think he seems like a nice human being who is not a douche.

(Yes, he looks better when he is not featured in a pic with his mouth open and sort of wonky teeth).

Holy crap – the guy just does it for me!

  2. hairball says:

Also, is Ricky G going to be asked back next year? I mean, yikes, it’s not supposed to be a roast. Every comment was like trying to humiliate someone.

  3. Sally says:

HBC love! But what was going on with Sandra Bullock’s bangs??

  4. hairball says:

I know, I hate those kind of bowl cut bangs. You just feel pain for their eyeballs knowing hair keeps grating across their retinas.

I actually liked Natalie Portman’s dress. I saw it in high def and the flower was very beautiful on her dress.

  5. Tiffany says:

I swear to you in this month’s UK Vogue, they showed someone wearing two different colored shoes just like HBC, I LOVE her.
Portman looks pretty great preggo, I’ll give her that. I just think pregnant women are sexy. She looks softer, not so bitch queen.

  6. di butler says:

Gervais was the only thing interesting about this borefest. LOVED the Scieno shout out to Cruise and Travolta, loved how he called Bruce Willis Ashton Kutcher’s dad, loved the slam at the Foreign Film Asses who totally sucked up to The Tourist so BP, AnJo, and Depp would be there. Sandra Bullock for some reason always looks better when her life is not good. Hmmm. Jane Fonda’s nipple slip-NO. Dear God, NO!

  7. Xiufetish says:

Gervais was hilarious. Every remark was apt. He just refuses to pander to actors’ vanity and preciousness.

  8. liser says:

The Social Network wasnt that good

  9. gobo says:

RPattz is looking pretty ginger there. Also I love Helena Bonham Carter so very much. Odd Shoes!

  10. Glyrics says:

    Love Sandra’s dress & Scarlett’s gorgeous hair-do!

  11. scotchy says:

i agree social network wasn’t that good. now what is up with portman’s satin prom dress, yikes. pregnant or not there is no excuse for that.

  12. Wilz says:

The Pacific was not THAT good. Tom Hanks should not have been so surprised. Band of Brothers, on the other hand, was spectacular.

  13. brin says:

Thanks, Kaiser, I knew I could depend on you for a good wrap-up!

  14. tapioca says:

Anyone else think NP would have looked great if her rose would have been in black?

I loved Helena Bonham Carter’s bitchface, but then, one of my all time favourite awards show moments was Samuel L. Jackson very obviously mouthing the word “sh*t!” when his Pulp Fiction performance lost out to (?) at the Oscars.

  15. SN says:

N.P. speach was awful and embarrassing.
I know she is pushing for that Oscar but tone the shit down, the Minivan Majority alrady likes you since you are knocked up.

  16. serena says:

wtfffffff Johnny didn’t win anything?? Paul Giamatti did?

Give me a break, The mad Hatter was wonderful and it should have win.

    fuck.

  17. candy says:

Helena’s shoe needed to be blue not green. There was no green in her dress and it looked a little strange….love her. Guess her husband was at home watching the kids?

Ricky’s comment about the old HFP dude that came out with his red hair at 90 years old was funnier than hell. Even Robert Dinero was giving the old geezers of the HFP some grief. What a funny show this year!

  18. brin says:

Yeah, Natalie Portman’s speech was too gushy, don’t want to hear her Oscar speech if she gets one.
Love Colin Firth! Was also glad to see Boardwalk Empire & Steve Buscemi get awards.

  19. brin says:

Oh….and wth was with ScarJo’s hair….did she go through a wind tunnel or is it an omage to the bride of Frankenstein?!

  20. Pearl says:

Did anyone see Nicole Kidman from a side-view? She looked slightly pregnant to me. Maybe it was the dress?

  21. Tigger says:

What’s Pattinson doing there? Aren’t the Golden Globes made for people with talent? Not one dimensional mumblers?

Anyways, can’t stand Portman, adore Julianne Moore, her and Annette both deserve Oscars. If NP wins, I’ll be pissed.

  22. Isabel says:

@brin – that’s exactly what I said! Bride of Frankenstein! Why aren’t more people calling out the weirdness of it!?

  23. Tess says:

Sandra Bullock’s bangs. OMG. They deserve a thread of their own. After all the fawning, goo-goo press she normally gets, it’s just so rich, finally, to be served up a little humor-fest entirely—and good-naturedly—at her expense.

She looked like Cher morphed into Cousin It.

  24. Kate says:

I honestly didn’t think HBC’s bitch face was because she lost but more because Melissa Leo’s speech was a rambling, stupid, incoherent mess and at the point they did the cutaway to HBC, it was, “really, enough already!”

Melissa Leo overacted (as did Christian Bale). I thought Amy Adams performance was better (as was HBC in the King’s Speech).

Totally agree on Lea Michelle’s ridiculous overacting all night. While I don’t think Chris Cofer deserved the win, he was genuinely surprised, humble and clever in his acceptance. The antithesis of Lea Michelle. Good for him.

  25. mln76 says:

I am waiting for the backstage dirt to come out. I am wondering if there was a showdown between Scarlett and Sandra. Because Sandra seemed a little off and Scarlett didn’t talk to the press (that I know of). Since they were seen spending time together about a month ago if there are not any pics or talk of them hanging out it’s a slam dunk that the Ryan story is real and that Scarlett’s PO’D.

  26. jaye E says:

What was the veiled comment Jane Lynch made?

Edit: Nevermind, I just saw her speech on HULU and that not so veiled comment was made of AWESOME! It wasn’t lost on the audience either, which was great.

  27. KJ says:

Melissa LEO!!!! I am SO fucking glad she won. I fell in love with her acting when she starred in the series Homicide: Life on the Street. She was impeccable in that and has been quietly turning in amazing performance after amazing performace. One of the most underrated actresses today I think. And she looked gorgeous on the red carpet. Swoooon. I love her so.

  28. normades says:

@tapioca: it was to Martin Landau in Ed Wood. Landau was great and funny as bela lugosi, but Samuel L. Jackson owned Pulp Fiction and should have won. That film is just such a classic and is ageing so well.

The Pacific sucked. CARLOS ruled and got rave reviews. Nice to see a foreign (French) production getting such recognition outside just the “foreign” category

  29. Anti-icon says:

I agree with most of your comments, EXCEPT everything you say about The Kids are All Right, a really tight script, great acting (both women are awesome, but Benning has the tougher acting role — as the uptight, but very caring older mom, not the biological one. I love that movie, and I DO THINK IT’s GROUNDBREAKING….in these strange times.

Carry on with the rest of your snark. I’m snickering. ; )

  30. Feebee says:

Loved Ricky Gervais, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Anyone who took offence needs to lighten up a bit.

Enjoyed the show but didn’t know what was going on with some of the speeches. Christian Bale seemed really odd like someone gave him some “be nice” pills and he didn’t know how to handle them.

I now believe the stories about Natalie Portman being an uber-dork. Her laugh after declaring her fiancee (unlike his character in the movie) does actually want to sleep with her reminded me of other dorks I’ve known in my life (brilliant lovely people they are also!) but just a little off sometimes 🙂

  31. Anon says:

RDJ was the best part of the entire show. Just putting it out there…

  32. Cheyenne says:

What in sweet Jesus’s name was Helena Bonham Carter wearing? Did she lose the mates to two pairs of shoes?

  33. kazoo says:

i am SO glad someone else feels the same way i do about “the kids are all right” and bening’s performance. ugh.

i want to slap lea michelle. i don’t watch glee and the girl wasn’t even on my radar until last night. but damn she is annoying as hell.

  34. Eileen says:

HBC-too frickin cool for words! I love her-her rebel goth Betsey Johnson look never gets old with me.

  35. mary jane says:

So happy for Steve Buscemi winning for Boardwalk Empire!! I found him absolutely mesmerizing in it.

  36. bluhare says:

I can’t believe that we all dutifully tune in to watch overpaid actors inflate their egos even more every year with these award shows. These people play dress up for a living and we’re supposed to sit there and think they’re the Chosen Ones? Not this snark.

  37. Faye says:

I love Scarjo’s hair! It’s like the wind blew it back all whimsically and she said, “Yes, I like that,” and put a clip in it.

  38. Judy says:

Definitely saw Tom Hanks’ bitch face last night…his display was pathetic. Loser.

  39. TeeTee says:

I love Sandra but are those clip on bangs in a slightly darker color??

Natalie looks softer pregnant, she just kinda popped out there huh?? love her dress.

  40. Kelli says:

    A) Trent Reznor IS F-ING YUMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!! Head like a Hole!
    B) HBC has a free pass to do whatever the hell she pleases – she is the SHITE!
    C) The Fighter should have won for best drama, as the acting was STELLAR! Melissa Leo is always amazing (Conviction, Welcome to the Rileys and now The Fighter) and Christin Bale were superb and I de believe both are aa shoe in for their respective Oscars.
    D) RICKY GERVAIS KILLED IT! LOVE THAT MAN!
    E) Tom Hanks DID NOT have a bitch face. If you can see what he was mouthing to his wife about “Carlos” (whatever that was) he was saying that it was Fantastic! He’s a Heavy Hitter – so much so that he is beyond having a bitch face about anything.
    F) LOVE LOVE LOVE That Katey Segal, Chris Colfer, Steve Buscemi and Jane Lynch won those categories! ALL SO WELL DESERVED and all seemed incredibly humble!
    G) Last – Want to mention that I was TOTALLY byummed about no Larua Linney – she is AMAZING in The Big C and so deserving.

And that is just my opinion! PS: TILDA IS AN ALIEN!!! GOOD CALL! SAME THING MY FRIEND TEXTED ME LAST NIGHT!

  41. LittleDeadGirl says:

Gotta disagree with you on one thing … while I LOVE mad men and I’m all about the Hamm dong they have won a bunch already and Boardwalk empire has been fucking brilliant in my opinion. I love it … can’t get enough and Steve Buscemi is amazing .. I’m so happy he won

  42. Mia Girl says:

Pattinson’s blue suit/tailoring was great. I think I’ve just fallen.

  43. Wresa says:

Amen, Bluhare! I never watch award shows. The way these people are lifted to demi-god status grosses me out.

  44. Mairead says:

I am delighted that Chris Colfer won – it was well deserved. He’s always on point, even if it’s just an arched eyebrow in the background.

And The Social Network was a better screenplay than Inception? Really? A groundbreaking piece of cinema versus a fictionalised account of a Harvard geek with a grudge and no respect for other the limits of other people’s privacy. 😐

  45. dj says:

Katey Segal won! Fantastic. Love her and much, much deserved. Also, RDJ was brilliant and sexy. Gervais was funny, maybe a little mean and it did start to wear as the show went on. Portman is starting to give me a Fishsticks vibe.

  46. Kim says:

I dont know if Jane Lynch was bagging on Lea, i think maybe she was just trying to be funny? I hope so because regardless of how you or Jane feels about Lea, the Golden Globes is not the time or place to bag on a fellow cast member. That wold bum me out about Jane if she was bagging on her co star on purpose & not just trying to be funny.

  47. Kim says:

The kids are alright was a very medicore movie with medicore acting.

And Chris winning for Glee? I love Glee and Chris but there were better supporting actors for other shows nominated. Even from Glee i think last season there were better other sup actors more deserving than him.

  48. Mindy says:

Little note.. De Niro was hilarious.. and as someone who has met him multiple times (my best friend worked in the fried chicken place right across from his Tribeca grill and he’d come there all the time to grab some chicken), that was his normal personality coming out.. or at least, that’s how he was every time I bumped into him.

  49. hairball says:

    @bluehare: Agree!

  50. Raven says:

I’m so glad Katey Sagal won. She is really impressive on Sons of Anarchy. I just started watching this season and she blew me away with her acting on this. I had no idea she was married to Kurt Sutter, the creator. I now wonder whether he created it with her in mind.

  51. chris says:

Looooooved Rob last night. He looked so awesome. Love Natalie Portman and her self-absorbedness and HBC can just do no wrong for me. She’s perfectly crazy.

  52. P.M. says:

Thank God Katey won, she completely deserves it. And I loved Trent Reznor back in the (bite the hand that feeds) day but watching him while making his acceptance speech he just seems kind of neutered?

  53. albeli says:

Benjamin Millepied totally had a deer caught in headlights look on his face at one point. Not hot.

I totally missed the Tom Hanks bitchface! Curses!

Chris Colfer was adorable. I was really happy for him and loved his speech, and I don’t even watch Glee anymore (couldn’t stand Lea).

  54. Caan says:

If that is Scarlett where did her boobs go?

  55. blasted1 says:

I’m sorry, but as pretty as Scarlett Johannson’s dress was, that hair-do made her look like the bride of Frankenstein…and speaking of hair…Sandra, girl, them bangs have gotta go

  56. Anya says:

I thought Jane was defending Lea Michelle. It seemed pretty clear to me.

  57. Benny says:

I don’t mind people with quirky tastes. But HBC has gone beyond that, into the realm of “Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!” Her dresses are the fashion equivalent of an attention-starved child making armpit noises. This is another of her armpit noise outfits, “Look at me!” It’s gotten really old.

  58. Hakura says:

Well, she may not be winning any conventional fashion awards, but you have to give Helena credit for having the balls to wear two different colored shoes.

She always makes me think of that poor kid down the street who’s grandmother’s mind is sort of ‘going’… that always ends up wearing mismatched everything.

  59. Firmy says:

Hi, Neat post. There’s a problem with your web site in internet explorer, would check this… IE still is the market leader and a large portion of people will miss your magnificent writing due to this problem.
