Colin Farrell steps in for Kiefer at Donald Sutherland’s Walk of Fame ceremony

I saw these photos last night, and I’m still utterly bewildered by them. Yesterday, Donald Sutherland got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Because he’s never gotten one before?!? In what world does a dude who has been making movies – GOOD movies – since the 1960s not have a star already?!? Anyway, so he got his star. And Colin Farrell came out to celebrate. They worked together in Ask the Dust, and the upcoming Horrible Bosses. Anyway, Colin was somehow available to come out, and yet Donald’s son Kiefer was NOT able to. What?

His son Kiefer was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame over two years ago, but on Wednesday it was Donald Sutherland’s turn to receive the honour. The 75-year-old actor – who has starred in such films as The Dirty Dozen, Don’t Look Now and MASH – was given the star in a ceremony outside the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. And his star was placed next to Kiefer’s – although the actor was unable to join his father and other relatives at the event due to work commitments.

Instead, he sent a message to the ceremony which was read out by actor Colin Farrell – who starred with Sutherland in the 2006 film Ask The Dust and is reunited with him in the forthcoming comedy Horrible Bosses.

‘I selfishly wanted to be there to tell you how proud I am to have you as my father and how even more proud I am to be your son,’ Kiefer said in his tribute.

Sutherland, meanwhile, joked that having a star on the Walk of Fame was better than getting a headstone at the cemetery as he could ‘come and visit’.

‘I could get a chair and sit here, or a bucket and a mop and clean it, and make sure that people don’t step on it,’ he joked.

Sutherland, who was born in New Brunswick in 1935, has appeared in more than 130 movies, beginning his film career with small roles in films and TV shows in the early 1960s. However his big break came with the 1967 film The Dirty Dozen, the story of a group of convicted murderers who are sent on a special mission during World War II to infiltrate enemy lines on the eve of D-Day.

Sutherland’s other major film roles include psychological horror film Don’t Look Now, satirical war film MASH, the hit comedy National Lampoon’s Animal House and the cop thriller Klute, alongside Jane Fonda. More recently he has starred in Cold Mountain, the remake of The Italian Job, and the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice in which he played Mr Bennet. Sutherland’s new film The Mechanic, an action thriller starring British actor Jason Statham, is released in the UK on February 4, while Horrible Bosses will be released later this year. He will also be seen on screen this spring in the Roman epic The Eagle.

Sutherland has appeared alongside Kiefer in two films – Max Dugan Returns in 1983, which was Kiefer’s movie debut, and the 1997 John Grisham adaptation A Time To Kill. Kiefer has also been busy since his long-running TV series 24 came to an end last year. He provided the voice of one of the canine characters in the children’s film Marmaduke last summer, and is starring in Melancholia, the new film from cult director Lars von Trier, which also stars Kirsten Dunst.

See, I like when stars get that the Walk of Fame is inherently cheesy and uncool, but they’re still able to ACT like it’s an honor. It’s Colin Firth versus Gwyneth Paltrow. Goopy acted like she could barely deign to be seen by her star, while Colin Firth actually got a bit weepy and sentimental with the honor. It sounds like Donald was genuinely touched – which is nice. But Colin Farrell? Really?

UPDATE: Re: My contention that Donald had Irish ancestry. Okay, I have a very strong memory of Donald giving an interview where he discussed his Irish roots and the first time he traveled to Ireland and how it felt like home for him. Maybe I’m not remembering it correctly, or maybe that interview never happened, I don’t know. I honestly thought he had strong Irish ancestry, but I accept that I’m probably very wrong. I apologize to you Canadian and Scottish bitches who claim Donald as your own. My bad!

    Colin Farrell…*drools*…

oh, what was that about Sutherland?… 😉

  2. mln76 says:

The celebrities (or their estates) have to pay to maintain their stars which is why many deserving people don’t have them.

  3. Eileen says:

I love Donald Sutherland, he has such an awesome voice. Good for Colin for stepping up.
Keifer is a spoiled little brat, always has been, always will be. And a raging drink a bottle of Jack a day alcoholic. That’s all I’m gonna say about that.

    • Marrisa says:

Kiefer Sutherland is NOT a brat! He has made it in hollywood on his own without the help of his father, he spent the beginning of his career sleeping in his car and going to numerous auditions just like the rest of the actors out there. I love Donald Sutherland with a passion and It is unfortunate that Kiefer couldn’t be there but to be totally honest Donald was hardly there during Kiefer’s childhood (according to a biography I saw) and Donald’s other children could have made a speach and btw Kiefer only drinks Cherry so you’re drink a bottle of Jack comment is completely invalid

  4. Riley says:

colin is a cutie but I don’t get the glasses on the head thing he has been doing lately. He has so much dippidy doo in his hair I cannot imagine that the lenses are very clean.

  5. brin says:

Page Six had a story about Keifer being out with his Broadway castmates so that’s why he wasn’t there. He’s doing “That Championship Season” with Chris Noth (sigh)& Jason Patric (sigh).

  6. Liana says:

Donald Sutherland is of Scottish descent. Glad he got a star, he deserves one.

  7. BrandyMc says:

I don’t care if he is 70 he has a hotness to him! LOL Anyway…Keifer Sutherland has been my crush since I was eight years old and saw “Lost Boys”…What is it about Irish boys? They are all f’n hot!

  8. Kaboom says:

    Donald is Canadian, not Irish.

  9. AlaskaJoey says:

I’m so mad I can’t see Kiefer in that play. But I just saw “Angels in America”, and am seeing Alan Rickman at BAM tomorrow, and am going on vacation to Prague in March, so I’m tapped out right now and can’t afford a ticket.

I’m surprised to hear Donald didn’t have a star yet, too! But I’m glad he has one now.

  10. sketches says:

“Sutherland, who was born in New Brunswick” … that would be Canada, folks.

  11. newtsgal says:

Hate to bust your bubble but Donald was born in Saint John, New Brunswick.
in other words HE AIN”T IRISH!
If you watched the Olympics you would have known he is a favorite son of Canada.

  12. JenJen says:

Maybe Kiefer is in jail somewhere. Donald just getting a star is a joke, just like Dennis Hopper getting one, just before he died.

  13. Kaiser says:

He’s ethnically Irish. Settle down, Canadians.

  14. Raven Sparrow says:

@Eileen, did you ever get to meet him?

I love DOnald Sutherland too. Love his voice and I think he has this hotness to him too, well not in these pics. Loved him in Dirty Sexy Money.

  15. jello says:

Oh man, anyone who knows anything about Donald Sutherland know he’s about as Canadian as you get. His ex-wife, Kiefer’s mother, Shirley Douglas is a famous Canadian theatre actress, and Kiefer’s grandfather Tommy Douglas, a politician, pretty brought in universal health care. Oh, and their ancestry is Scottish not Irish.

We’re not unsettled, yo’all just need to get your facts straight.

  16. Karen says:

Did anyone else notice that Walk of Fame people made a little typo while making the plaque they presented to Donald? It says, “January 26, 2010”.

Not that any of the stars actually keep that cheap plaque in their homes but could someone have at least paid enough attention to get the engraving correct??

Add me to the list who object (in lighthearted jest) to Donald being primarily identified by the Irish (subsequently corrected to Scottish) ancestry. He and Kiefer are Canadian boys and I adore that talented family. I don’t care if Kiefer is lying in a gutter swimming in a sea of his own vomit, as long as he whispers in my ear using that mad sexy voice of his, I’ll forgive (almost) anything. Swoon!!

  17. Eileen says:

@Karen wow good eyes! Eeeek that’s not cool at all.

@Raven Yes I dated him when I was 19-he was 27. He’s a nice guy don’t get me wrong, but he has a big chip on his shoulder from daddy being busy when he was young and being dumped by JR and taking off with his BFF. He was and still is from what I can see a functioning alcoholic.

  18. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Kiefer Sutherland got a star before Donald…is this the Matrix?

  19. lrm says:

Ethnically scottish;sutherland is a scottish surname, far as I know….also, new brunswick and nova scotia are full of scots-irish, not so much.[both of my grandmothers hail from the area-one french, one scottish]….

  20. lrm says:

I guess we can be even more confused now as to the ‘why’ of colin farrell’s presence-i love that they are wearing similar suits, however.(: :
    Sutherland:
This is ancient surname is both Scottish and locational. It originates from the former county of Sutherland, so called from the pre 7th century Olde Norse ‘suthroen’ meaning ‘southern’, plus ‘land’

  21. shockedandappalled says:

Um, Kaiser, I was always under the impression that Donald Sutherland was Canadian of Scottish ethnic background, not Irish. All of my googling right now points to that, though it is hardly scientific proof. Eg. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Canadian
Also, Sutherland in my experience is a very Scottish name, though it could be Irish as well, I suppose.

  22. junk573r says:

Anyone see Colin on Ellen yesterday for her birthday (no idea if it was a rerun, I don’t watch the show really)? Julia Thats So Tacky Roberts was on as a guest surprise and then Colin came out with a cake for Ellen after and you could see Julia pout because she wasn’t the most amazing surprise guest there. Colin was so charming and fekking hot and so so good. Never really cared for the guy until I saw him on Ellen all self depreciating and supahot. Jebus.

Also, my uncle when to highschool with Keifer in toronto and apparently got into a fight with him and gave him a black eye (uncle was/is a pretty big beefcake). I thought that was pretty funny. I think Keifer is a dillhole.

  23. SolitaryAngel says:

@jello: If you are so gung-ho on having straight facts, you would know that it’s y’all NOT yo’all.

  24. Kaiser says:

I added an update and apology, ladies! My bad.

  25. Riley says:

@Junk: I normally don’t catch Ellen either but yesterday I did and you are correct. He was soooo cute. I’ve seen him on there before and he was equally as cute. He lined danced everything. I also got the same impression about Julia (though it doesn’t surprise me)but I was wondering if she was jealous that Colin was all over Ellen and not her.

  26. Leigh says:

    @Kaiser
    “Settle down Canadians”
LOL, when’s the last time you’ve heard/seen THAT said

    (A rabble-rousing Canadian)

  27. Jeri says:

Aren’t “Stars” a sponsered event – like purchased by agents or producers, etc.

  28. KateNonymous says:

“Stars” are a marketing tool, which suggests to me that Kiefer’s people are better than Donald’s. But I don’t think that all of those people with stars have estates that are maintaining them nearly a century later.

  29. JenJen says:

Yeah, Julia made some narcissistic comment along the lines that only the President could follow her. Can’t stand her.

  30. JenJen says:

So that was Julia’s first appearance on Ellen? She was BS-ing how she wouldn’t miss it (because she had a movie to plug of course). Yeah, I think I would like to see her face when Colin who has been on the show before, upstaged her.

  31. Meanchick says:

Nothing would have kept me from celebrating that moment with my dad. Rehab or just a jackhole?

  32. Raven Sparrow says:

@Eileen, I’m sorry I actually meant Donald …because I knew you went out with Keifer so just wanted to know if you met his dad 😉

  33. Eileen says:

@Raven I WISH I had! =( Talked to him on the phone to tell him Puppet Masters sucked (we had just seen it at the movies) & he laughed. lol That’s about it. Looooove that voice!

  34. Ashley says:

I just have one thing to say about Julia: She’s actually a very sweet, down-to-earth person. She was the maid of honor at a friend’s wedding in GA several years ago and you could not meet a nicer person. She made a joke, and let’s all face it – on a scale of talent and ability to keep her blood alcohol level in check, Julia definitely beats Colin. Colin Farrell needs to take a bath (in water with soap, not liquor with a hooker).

  35. Bill Hicks is God says:

“…although the actor was unable to join his father and other relatives at the event due to work commitments.”
    = hangover.

  36. Charissa says:

I don’t care if Donald Sutherland is 75, I’d bone him in a second. I think he is way better looking than Kiefer.

  37. nina says:

Awww! I like how Donald and Colin coordinated their sports coats to match!

  38. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I love ya, Don-Bear, but Casanova was stranger than ‘What, What in the Butt’ (thanks, Tosh.0) and ‘The Legend of Old Gregg combined. Good score, though.

  39. Sally says:

Keifer is a jerk. Why he didn’t buy his dad one of these stars years ago is beyond comprehension.

Dennis Hopper was overlooked as well and had to wait until he was on his deathbed for anyone to get it together enough to get him a star. Rubbish….I love Donald Sutherland, and detest his ugly son. And what’s wrong with Colin? Maybe he and Mr. Sutherland bonded like father and son on their last film. At least he took time from his schedule and showed up the way a son should.

  40. Dannnii says:

Yes, he is a Canadian of mainly Scottish descent. But, hey, seeing that he’s from the east coast like myself perhaps his mother does have Irish in her. It wouldn’t be surprising.
Donald got his star on our/Canadian walk of fame in 2000 I believe….still a little on the late side…he’s a highly gifted and grounded actor.

  41. Majosha says:

    @Bill Hicks: Yep.

  42. Kaboom says:

Yeah you don’t want the Canadians unsettled. Last time they got that way they came all the way down to Washington, D.C. and set the White House on fire in 1812 😀

  43. Trashaddict says:

1st picture shows what happens to old potheads. Also, he’d look a lot younger if he’d lose that beard.

  44. Valuable info. Lucky me I discovered your web site by chance, and I’m shocked why this twist of fate didn’t happened in advance! I bookmarked it.

  45. Levi Davie says:

Sometimes I contemplate if folks truly take time to write something original, or are they only just dishing out words to fill a site. This surely doesn’t fit that mold. Thank you for taking the time to write with awareness. Now And Then I look at a page and question whether they even proofread it.Fantastic work with this article.
