Matthew McConaughey’s mom says his dad died while they were having sex

Matthew McConaughey’s mom Kay is a former kindergarten teacher living in Texas who raised three boys: Matthew, and his two older brothers Mike and Patrick. She has a new self-help book out called I Amaze Myself which includes some pretty amusing anecdotes about her life – not least of which is the fact that her husband died while she was having sex with him. I’m a little skeeved out over the fact that she wanted him to be brought out nude after he died because he was well endowed. She would presumably be too distraught to make that kind of eyebrow-raising decision, but maybe she has creative memory:

In her new book, I Amaze Myself! (iamazemyself.com), Kay McConaughey dishes on everything from her son Matthew’s conception to how her husband died in a compromising position with her!

“On Monday mornings, he and I often said goodbye by making love,” Kay says exclusively in the latest issue of Us Weekly. “But one day, all of a sudden, it just happened.

“I knew that something was wrong, because I didn’t hear anything from him. Just nothing,” she says. “But it was just the best way to go!”

And when her man couldn’t be revived, she made sure he was taken from the house in the buff.

“I was just so proud to show off my big old Jim McConaughey — and his gift,” she says.

The mother — who tells Us, “I would love to be on Oprah!” — also says that her most famous son, 38, was a happy accident.

It was just after she’d married Matthew’s dad for the third time.

“I was deciding, ‘Do I want to have another baby? Do I want to have an affair? Or go back to school?’” she says. “That’s when Matthew was conceived. We had tried for 16 years and no baby. So Matthew was a big surprise!”

Matt’s mom also includes a story on her website about how she got her husband to marry her – by inviting him to his own wedding. He showed up with a ring, but she packed two suitcases – one to move home, one to go on her honeymoon, just in case. The sample chapters from her book online include a lot of sensible homespun wisdom, like don’t compare yourself to other people and learn to accept life’s imperfections. I like Kay’s writing style and she sounds like a real hoot.

One of the examples Matthew gave when asked before Levi was born if he would be a disciplinarian-type parent was this quote, presumably from his mom: “You better get back in bed, get up on the other side of it, and get back in this kitchen with a new attitude!”

His mom sure has personality and she raised one of the most successful actors in Hollywood. One of her other sons, Michael also known as “Rooster” works on oil rigs and is on the TruTV reality show “Black Gold.” She has several grandchildren and two great grandchildren. You would never know it from looking at her!

Kay’s book I Amaze Myself is available through her website.

Is her ‘claim to fame’ built entirely on her son’s stardom?

My parents divorced and remarried each other also, big mistake.
But in Kay’s instance, it produced a gorgeous son.
    Kay, you look fabulous.

  2. Syko says:

She looks fantastic! I’d never guess she was a great-grandmother!

And what better way to go out? She sounds like someone I’d enjoy knowing.

  3. Lola says:

I feel like I have been told more than I need to know. 🙁

  4. lilah012 says:

Interesting lady. Also? Matthew’s wife is pretty hot in that pic.

  5. Lola says:

Lilah, Matthew has no wife, just the mother of his child and his girlfriend.

  6. Chamalla says:

There are far worse ways to go.

Lola, is there any celebrity you like?

  7. Codzilla says:

She really does look amazing. Not sure about showing off her dead husband’s wang, but who am I to judge?

  8. Baholicious says:

Codzilla: LOL!! Those bronzed baby shoes immediately came to mind – could you imagine?: “My, Mrs. McConaughey, that’s certainly an interesting paperweight you have there…”

Seriously, she looks fantastic and that is only surpassed by her attitude. What joie de vivre, you know?

  9. princess says:

She looks incredible for her age.

I have to admit that MMc was not someone that I thought very highly of, but since having a son I’m warming up to him slightly.

  10. DogRunner says:

    His mom is gorgeous!

  11. Tess says:

Current book—I Amaze Myself—will be followed by a sequel—I Pleasure Myself—.

Good Gravy. What ever happened to living quietly and letting go of loved ones with with a little dignity?

  12. Kaiser says:

It is sort of TMI, but I think it’s funny that she’s an unrepentant Size-Queen.

Chamella – Lola only likes Cruise & Aniston. She’s rabid about Cruise, esp.

  13. Elizabeth says:

Too much info. She sounds like a media whore.

  14. Jinxy says:

The man died and she’s showing off his dick to the EMT’s, yeah that classy and well adjusted. Her son is a nutjob – and we now know where he got it from. Matt is hugely lucky he has a great agent who has gotten him good parts that matched what he could do.

You don’t talk about your dead husband that way, the details make her seem really slutty and socially maladjusted.

  15. geronimo says:

Matt is completely his mother’s son, judging by this article. Bit flaky, bit whacky but essentially sound. And Codzilla, exactly, we all deal with grief in out own…er…special way. 8)

  16. Kris says:

Wait isn’t this old news? Didn’t I read this from Matthew a while ago on your site?

  17. Syko says:

Death doesn’t make you sacred. I do believe that almost any man I’ve ever known would love for his woman to be talking 10 years later about how big his pee-pee was. This lady obviously had a healthy and satisfying sex life and loves to talk about it. I would too.

  18. Bodhi says:

I love the McConaughey family! They are down to earth & hilarious & don’t give a good goddamn what anyone thinks of them.

    And that is awesomely cool

  19. czarina says:

    WAY TMI!!!!

I just don’t need to know that much about her marriage, her sex life or her late husband.

And, what is with mothers or fathers of celebrities writing books? Why? I’m trying to think of a famous person’s parent I would like to read a book by….
    Hmmmmm….can’t think of anyone.

  20. journey says:

at first i was in the too much info club, but after reading a few quotes– i love this lady! she’s not doing it to fame-*hore, she’s doing it because she’s an irrepressible old lady who loves life and speaks her mind!

  21. Syko says:

    Amen, Bodhi!

  22. Cinderella says:

No wonder he gets high and plays the bongos naked.

  23. Kris says:

Yes, I found where I read it before!! That was driving me crazyyyyy

  24. Orangejulius says:

This makes me feel guilty for all the times I’ve over-shared with my sons!

  25. anna says:

    ummm

did anybody else notice that matts mom was in an open relationship?

does anybody else think thats wierd?

  26. Syko says:

No, I don’t find it weird at all. Why would she not be in an open relationship just because she’s a mother? She’s still human, and believe me, the libido outlasts many other youthful aspects of your life.

  27. Trashaddict says:

On a different thread, anybody notice girlfriend’s attitude in that picture? Looks like no love lost there. Doesn’t bode well for the future of that extended family….

  28. drm says:

Trashaddict: Good call, I was just thinking while looking at those pics that Matt’s girlfriend’s body language is REEEALLLY interesting in those two pictures…me thinks she isn’t a fan of Mummy…

  29. vdantev says:

    speaking of overshares…

  30. I choose me says:

Aw, she sounds like a hoot with a side of nanny. Not everyone is grief stricken when a loved one dies, instead they choose to celebrate the life of the one who passed, rather than mourn their death.

I’d like to read her book. *mind wanders off into dirty territory* Hmm, wonder if Matthew is similarly ah, gifted?
