Alec Baldwin contemplated suicide; My Name is Earl creator calls him unlikeable

Alec Baldwin says that after the infamous voicemail to his daughter was leaked- the one where he called her a “rude, thoughtless pig,”- the actor was close to ending it all. He discusses the incident in his new autobiography.

ALEC BALDWIN contemplated suicide after an angry phone message to his daughter became public.

In a new autobiography he tells of his spiral into depression after the media revealed he had called 11-year-old Ireland a “thoughtless little pig” in a heated voicemail, left when she didn’t answer a pre-arranged call.

And the actor, who shared custody with ex-wife KIM BASINGER at the time, became suicidal when the Los Angeles County Superior Court commissioner suspended his visitation rights.

An insider who has read Baldwin’s soon-to-be published book, A Promise to Ourselves: A Journey Through Fatherhood and Divorce, said: “He writes about how he was serious about suicide. He definitely put a lot of thought into the different ways he could accomplish it.”

Instead the actor decided to seek treatment.

“Alec writes in the book that a doctor told him he’d be no good to anyone – especially Ireland – if he destroyed himself,” added the source.

Baldwin’s book hits shelves at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Alec is also complaining that his hit show, “30 Rock,” doesn’t get the attention or ratings it deserves and is treated by NBC executives as a “redheaded stepchild.” This caused Greg Garcia, creator and head writer for another hit NBC show, “My Name is Earl,” to fire back at Baldwin in a heated statement.

One man with little sympathy for Alec is Greg Garcia, creator of much-superior show ‘My Name Is Earl’ who has highlighted his divine writing skills by penning one of the better put downs to Baldwin since ‘Team America’.

“Maybe the reason enough people aren’t watching 30 Rock to make Mr. Baldwin happy is because Alec Baldwin is so unlikable as a person. 30 Rock is a really funny show. And Alec Baldwin is funny as long as someone else is writing his words. When left to his own devices, he sounds like a psychotic narcissist who whines about being rich.”

Ouch! To be fair, Alec has been quite uninspiring in some movies as well (‘The Shadow’ anyone?). Greg (who is fast becoming a personal favourite) wasn’t done yet though…

“Instead of blaming NBC, I think Alec should consider that some people in America may not want to watch a man who cusses out his own 11 year old daughter on a phone message, calling her a “rude thoughtless little pig.” It’s a shame that the people who produce such a funny show have to put up with such a distasteful man on a daily basis.”

Let’s see if Alec can come up with an equally scathing reply by himself or if he needs a team of writers to do it for him.

[From Holy Moly]

Oh, it’s ON. I doubt Alec will be able to stay silent on this. I do find it interesting that Alec only felt bad about verbally abusing his child after the tape leaked to the media. However, I have no idea what he’s had to deal with in ex-wife Kim Basinger- she’s always seemed a little unstable to me. Still, he does have a reputation for having a bad temper and a huge ego – which makes him so perfect for the character he plays on “30 Rock.” As for his claims about how the show is treated, I really can’t agree. NBC has been promoting the hell out of the show, especially after its numerous Emmy wins last year. And the show has made its creator, Tina Fey, a superstar. Maybe Alec’s just jealous because she’s getting all the attention.

You know what, yeah some of his roles are funny. But as a person, he’s a f*cking asshat.

  2. geronimo says:

Ah God, he made a mistake, apologised for it, let it go. He never claimed to be Mother bloody Theresa.

All Baldwin needs to do is make me laugh and he does that in spades on 30 Rock. And I love My Name is Earl but I wouldn’t call it a much superior show. Of the two, 30 Rock is the darker and therefore, to me, funnier.

  3. Rosanna says:

Greg Garcia is no nice fellow either! Calling a person (ANY person) “so unlikable” only makes Baldwin sound right in his complaints.

  4. Kaiser says:

I love both 30 Rock & Earl – they both have really smart writing, and both (I think) are re-defining sitcoms.

I can’t help it – I really like Alec Balwin, even if he is an a$$hat.

Also – Earl’s star Jason Lee is a Scientologist. Perhaps that’s what Baldwin will use when lashing back!

  5. lola lola says:

He’s horrible. Anyone remember when that small plan crashed into an apartment building in NYC? He was trying to get through the police barriers by screaming the typical “don’t you know who I am?”…yeah, that’s the calling card of an asshole.

  6. Cowbell says:

He looks like a puffy drunk.

  7. Lara says:

Maybe his daughter was a little thoughtless pig that day 😉 . It’s not like preteens are little angels all day long. And he didn’t call her that publicly, someone (hm, who could *that* possibly be?) leeked the tape. As long as he delivers as good as in 30 Rock, he has my blessing. And as geronimo said it, MNIE is good, but superior, i don’t know.

  8. katie says:

oh please. My Name Is Earl is really funny. 30 Rock is really funny. “much superiour” is subjective.

  9. Bob says:

    Ego 10
    Intellect 0

The world would be a much better place without him.

  10. Diva says:

I think he’s a HUUUGE dick but I love the show… he doesn’t have to be a nice guy to entertain me.

    Earl rocks..
    30 Rock, well, rocks…

  11. Mr. T says:

I don’t agree with Alec on most issues but I will defend him as a parent. I think his ex-wife is destructive and a bad influence on his daughter. In many aspects, that is torture to a father who loves his daughter. To those who wish ill of others, lest not this happen to you.

  12. Anonymous says:

I agree a lot with geronimo. This happened a very long time ago, get over it.

And to everyone who says he’s an “a$$hat” and other moronic things, tell me, how many times have you sat down and talked to Alec Baldwin? The point is you have no idea, so leave the man alone. He’s a good comedic entertainer and I respect 30 Rock a lot more than the contrived My Name is Earl.

  13. cara says:

He had me at “thoughtless little pig” ….I have some, so I understand. And as for the guy from My Name is Earl, I can’t stand that show because of the scientologist lead, the guy with the nose. I’m racist against them, what can I say.

  14. Heidi says:

It is possible for two people to disagree on a subject & both be right… but that’s just little old me thinking out loud

  15. Mandy says:

Ah, I love both those shows (though they’re both great, 30 Rock is funnier, I think)… It’ll be fun to read about them going at it, though.

Of course, the cynical part of me wonders if this is just a publicity ploy for ratings, since the new seasons of both are coming up soon.

  16. daisy424 says:

Cara He had me at “thoughtless little pig” 😀 I’m still laughing!!

I miss the beer tag on Earl.
Love 30 Rock, Alec is perfect for that role.

  17. Lola says:

I love 30 rock more than my name is earl and whatever the other show. I feel for Alec. He was a dimwit that day but who is an angel. Besides, if your ex is Basinger, you too would snap. I hope he is sorted now. Suicide is too extreme.

  18. The Old KC says:

NOOOOO!!!! Jason Lee is a scientologist?! I had no idea. I have My Name is Earl on my tiVo list but noticed it kind of stopped making me laugh when Alyssa Milano joined the cast. Something about it became unfunny and I stopped tiVo-ing it. I like Alyssa too, it wasn’t her – the writing lost its hilarious kookiness for me.

  19. Molly P. says:

Greg Garcia seems to me an opportunist who is using Alec’s spotlight to steal some promotion for himself and his show.

What Mr. Garcia omits is that once an individual reaches a certain stage level, said person no longer cares if people “like” you or not. There really is no profit in it, after all.

This “nobody likes you” mentality is usually abandoned shortly after high school or at least once one is old enough to have their head on straight.

Mr. Baldwin may not be what Mr. Garcia considers likeable, but … who cares what Mr. Garcia thinks anyway.

Mr. Baldwin is talented in his own right and has survived/succeeded in a tough industry for a long time. Yes, he has problems, EVERYBODY’S GOT PROBLEMS.

Mr. Garcia’s comments concerning Mr. Baldwin’s child are way out of order. This type rhetoric will get your a** handed to you in a sling, and he certainly deserves that and a whole lot more for putting the child in the middle of his self serving rant.

Mr. Garcia is a grimey b*tch for making such comments to the press in his cheap attempt to boost his show.

    Grow up skank.

  20. RAN says:

I agree with Anonymous and Geronimo… this was a personal problem that he reacted to and it’s waaayyy in the past. Even when it first happened, I couldn’t believe the colossal gall of his b1tch of an ex wife to release that tape.

Must be something in my personality, but I tend to get along (best) with people who other people find to be polarizing. I guess I just look for the good traits. I don’t know Alex, but he’s probably just the kind of a@@ that would have me laughing all day and would fit well in my wide circle of friends – all different personalities, shapes, sizes, colors, and opinions.

Gotta take up for him about the ‘thoughtless little pig’ comment too – who hasn’t made mistakes or said something they regret? Give him a break.

Oh and MNIE vs. 30 Rock – both funny but there’s no comparison – 30 Rock hands down!

  21. hello says:

That guy whose leg is in the foreground of the header pic has HUGE calfs!

And I’m sorry, but some of those overly indulged, bratty little “I’m important because someone in my family is famous” kids do need to be called out. He could have said a hell of a lot worse and the kid probably deserved it. Better a father who limits it to words than a peer on myspace…or getting beaten up when she mouths off to the wrong kid.

I think that Earl is on its way down the tubes…I saw Jenna Elfman on the previews for this season. The Scientology invasion via Jason Lee. It’s a big CoS plot. They’re trying to make us used to them before they make their move.

  22. RAN says:

Amen hello – Better a father who cares enough to react, than a father who could care less that the child exists.

  23. fee says:

Im sure his daughter was upset when she heard the message once on her phone – I cant imagine how she would have felt having to hear it (along with the world) over & over again once it was broadcast on national/world media when mum released it!

Im sure all parents have lost their temper and said things to their kids out of frustration that when they look back they wish it was said differently – if you say you never have your either lying or not the parents of teenagers yet!

  24. what says:

alec is great on 30 rock. he was amazing in running with scissors, has anyone seen that? can’t say the movie is that great all around but he made me tear up.

  25. CB Rawks says:

I absolutely love 30 Rock, but I have always thought that Alec should be very VERY grateful that Tina threw him that bone and rescued his career. He owes her everything. Hope he realises that, and realises that he is not the star of the show, SHE is.

I totally take issue with: “creator of much-superior show ‘My Name Is Earl’”
Good god!! Much superior? I’ll bet the person who said that also tivos According to Jim.

  26. V. I. Pete says:

Mr. Baldwin is not always on target while acting, but can be brilliant most of the time. He almost always does his work with professionalism.

What celebrity child is not a “rude thoughtless little pig”. Now aren’t there just a few people out there who have been called much worse by their parents? Alex is always outspoken when it comes to speaking about this conservative right wing, false, holier than thou, pseudo-Christian, right wing government. They are the ones who are out to get him.

  27. anon says:

My name is earl is not funny.

  28. lola lola says:

I love My Name is Earl! 30 Rock, no, sorry. I don’t find it funny. I’m totally disappointed to hear Lee is a Scientologist….Damn! No one in hollywood is safe.

  29. rottenkitty says:

    >>I absolutely love 30 Rock, but I have always thought that Alec should be very VERY grateful that Tina threw him that bone and rescued his career. He owes her everything. Hope he realises that, and realises that he is not the star of the show, SHE is.<<

You actually think she “saved” his career? Take a look at his imdb page before you make that moronic statement again.

He’s worked steadily throughout his career in BOTH television and film — a career that goes back to 1963.

While Tina Fey gave him this plum role (which she said she wrote with him in mind and was thrilled when agreed to take it), it takes a really gifted actor to play both comedic and serious roles. I defy anyone to watch the scene in “30 Rock” where he portrays Tracy Jordan’s family in a therapy session and not give this guy his dues. In the hands of a lesser talent, it would have been shite. In Baldwin’s it was hysterically funny and absolutely sublime.

He was also nominated for an Oscar in 2004 and an Emmy in 2008. (This was one of multiple Emmy nominations.)

So, seriously, you can think he’s an asshat, but he’s a fanatastically successful asshat and if you don’t know that, you can fuck off.

  30. rottenkitty says:

Correction, Alec Baldwin’s career doesn’t go back to 1963 — it started in 1980. My bad.

  31. enchantress says:

Just the other day I turned on the T.V. and “Beetlejuice” was on – Gawd, Alec Baldwin HAS NOT aged well 🙁
He was really a handsome man once, seemed like a nice guy, and played nice sympathetic leading-man type characters. What the he11 happened? The true self came out at last?
I guess there is some truth to the old saying that, after a certain age, you get the face that you deserve…

  32. Shay says:

Did he really have to add his two cents to this?

  33. Jane says:

I admire Greg Garcia because once again, we find Alex playing victim and whining about the actual consequences of how he chooses to conduct himself. Face it; a talented actor should be able to at least “act” nice. Greg calls it like he sees it; Alex doesn’t have to like it (Alex being the common denominator in many conflicts, including but not limited to the verbal abuse he recorded for his daughter. -Jane “Reality is not Subjective” Gee

  34. Modesty says:

    Team Alec all the way…

My name is Earl does not appeal to me, it’s lame and not nearly as intelligent as 30 rock.

    Just my humble opinion! 🙂

  35. geronimo says:

I love both but MNIE has a limited premise and I think it’s kind of run out of steam. 30 Rock on the other hand is proper grown up TV, dark, dirty and sophisticated. As good as Larry Sanders, no higher praise.

  36. Carrie says:

Kids today are rude pigs and it is about time people call them on it instead of pandering to them.
As for Alec – I am sure he is an a–
and the other guy – why did he feel the need to put his two cents in,- I am sure he is an a==

  37. Shane says:

Who says Kim Basinger is unstable?

Just because she tried to shield her child from his psychosis?

Living with a royal a-hole control freak like Alec would make anyone batsh*t crazy.

I commend her for staying strong for so long in a situation not unlike a Vietnam POW Hanoi Hilton type situation with that man. God bless her.

  38. jessiee says:

@ -Jane “Reality is not Subjective” Gee

if “reality” isn’t SUBJECTIVE — as in, YOUR reality is viewed from YOUR eyes — then what the f*ck IS it? Please don’t tell me that YOU’VE decided what MY reality is. That’s a bone I will HAVE to pick up.

    Sheesh.

  39. stellapurdy says:

If you’ve never gone through a bitter divorce with a pyscho ex wife who uses the children as a tool to get back at you, you can’t imagine the emotional heartache, helplessness and psychological torture it puts you through. Trust.

  40. Diva says:

Wouldn’t you call your EX a selfish pig, then, though, not your child who is already going through hell just like you are?

If he’d have called her a selfish little brat, I wouldn’t have had a problem with it, but calling your child a pig just isn’t something I can just get past. It’s just my feeling.

  41. CB Rawks says:

    @Jessiee,
I think they mean reality as in actual facts:
“Look, an anvil just fell on your head.”
“Not in MY reality, in my reality my head is dent-free.”
“Um no sorry, in actuality, you have an anvil thoroughly stuck in your head.”

    Empirical Fact-style. 😉

  42. CB Rawks says:

Goodness Rottenkitty, what a nasty and unnecessary diatribe. What’s stuck up your arse?
I was saying that Alec’s career was pretty much winding down (TRUE)
and that Tina breathed new life into it with the plum role she gave him. (TRUE)
Other than 30 Rock, what has he had success with RECENTLY?

I agree he does a great job with it, but so could many others. He is lucky he got it.

Celebitchy, I believe rottenkitty’s nasty unstable ranting complete with cusswords might be against your rules of conduct? Doesn’t moderation catch the f-word anymore?

  43. stellapurdy says:

@Diva – I’m not trying to condone his behavior toward his daughter, it’s reprehensible. What I meant was the influence that a primary custody ex can have on the children, especially when the ex wants to get back at the other spouse, can drive a person to do and say horrible things out of frustration and despair.

I lived it with my ex’s first wife and the torture she put their children through by trying to get them to hate their Dad. Look at the fiasco Brinkley put her children through.

What’s the best way to get back at your ex for all the pain that you harbor – get the kids to shun him/her too.

  44. Jeanne says:

Is that Alec Baldwin or Ted Kennedy?

  45. YesReally says:

Bob, Enchantress, Jane, Shane, CB Rawks — You guys hit the nail on the head. Personally I don’t like 30 Rock, or its energy. As for all this “never mind only his talent matters and he does a good job and entertains me” business, that sure does remind me of what people said about Bill Clinton. No it’s not a right wing out to destroy either of them, it’s just normal decency and intelligence that refuses to put up with their type. GO AWAY ALEC YOU TURN PEOPLE’S STOMACHS. He’s done his body of work, it’s in the can, he’s not fit for politics and a whole bunch of people would never vote for him after that message to Ireland, which I don’t doubt is part of why he was so upset after it became public, and he’s a menace to society, plus ugly outside as well as inside. Enough with people saying so what we like his work. Are there no standards left in this society?
