DJ AM and Travis Barker expected to make full recovery

DJ AM and musician Travis Barker survived the crash of a private plane late Friday night by jumping out of the aircraft as soon as it hit a nearby embankment on takeoff. The Learjet was on fire when they escaped and both were badly burned. They were the only survivors out of six people on the plane.

Yesterday the prognosis sounded poor for at least one of the victims. Travis Barker is said to be burned from the waist down, and it sounded like DJ AM, Adam Goldstein, was in worse shape as he suffered facial burns, and there was news that doctors had him in a medically-induced coma to do skin graft surgery.

E! Online quoted a source which said AM was “really, really badly burned,” that “his face is very burned,” and “More than 50 percent of his body is burned and the worst is on his face.”

Today there is more positive news about AM and Barker’s condition, with their doctor stating that both should have full recoveries despite the serious nature of their injuries:

Travis Barker and DJ AM suffered second and third degree burns from Friday’s jet crash that killed four people, Dr. Fred Mullins, Medical Director at Georgia’s Joseph Still Burn Center, announced at a press conference Sunday morning.

Barker has burns on his torso and lower body and Goldstein has burns on his arm and part of his head, Mullins said. (Mullins would not say the percentage of their bodies that were burned or whether they were conscious. He also did not go into detail about the type of treatment they are currently receiving.)

He said the two did not sustain any other injuries from the crash.

“I think these patients are going to make a full recovery,” Mullins said.

He added, “Anybody who can survive a plane crash is very lucky.”

During the conference, Mullins also read a statement from the families.

“The families wish to thank fans from all over the world for their prayers and concern. Deepest sympathy is expressed to the loved ones of those who perished in the crash. As the two recuperate and mourn this loss, privacy for them, their families and friends is requested at this time.”

[From US Weekly]

Our thoughts are with AM and Barker as they recuperate from this tragic accident. They are lucky to be alive and are likely to have a lot of surgeries and difficult rehabilitation ahead of them.

You can send well wishes to AM and Barker through the e-mail a patient form on their hospital’s website. They are likely to received tens of thousands of messages, but it can’t hurt.

This is very good news! I just hope that they make a full emotional/psychological recovery also. I can’t imagine what they went through – and will continue to go through as a result of the crash and loss of their friends. Best wishes to them and thoughts and prayers to the families and other friends of the people killed.

Omg… are you facking serious, Danielle?????? His SECOND and THIRD DEGREE BURN scars wouldn’t show up because he has so many tattoos?????

Jesus, why do people say things they have no facking clue about?

  3. WTF?!?! says:

Good for them. Prayers are heading their way.

  4. prissa says:

I can’t imagine the terror they must have been under. I hope they thank GOD for their ability to think quickly under such tremendous pressure! They will be in my prayers.

Whatever happened to patient confidentiality? I understand holding a press conference because of the interest, but they might say the duo IS expected to survive and then not say anything else because of patient confidentiality.

Yah, I’m with you Diva. When someone is THAT burned, it’s goes a lot deeper than your tats. Of course it’s going to show. In fact (this is very very uncooth of me) but I was wondering if his genetalia might still work since they’re stressing it’s his lower body.

  6. Diva says:

I was wondering the same thing, Elisha, mostly because that would be very difficult to deal with psychologically, on top of everything else involved.

I felt almost sick when I heard about this crash, as I have seen pictures of crash victims (not, sadly, survivors) and have an idea of what kind of devestation such serious burns can do to the victim.
Hearing that they will survive is, I’m sure, a huge relief for their families, but if the injuries are as severe as they are being implied to be, it will be a painful and difficult recovery for these men.
Perhaps their families authorized the doctor to speak to the media so that photographers wouldn’t be hanging out like vultures waiting for them to be declared dead?
I pray for them and wish them every medical miracle their doctors can accomplish.

Having read about and seen survivors of second and third degree burns…if it ever happened to me, I’d have wished I died.

Good luck to the both of them.

  9. caribassett says:

between Morgs and Dannielle I am speechless. My brother survived 3rd degree burns, multiple surgeries. 😡

  10. vdantev says:

Yeah, but a recovery to what sort of ‘life’ ? I couldn’t live as someone who looks like a badly made wax statue that was left close to a radiator. Sorry.

I believe doctors noted Barker’s torso was burned which sounds like his lower half would be spared. This contradicted initial reports. I think a lot of misinformation was floating around at first. ‘Uncouth’ speculation or not, yeah that *area* on him being burned/inoperable would just add to the devastation. I’m so glad they’re going to make it. They’ll be leaning on each other for support no doubt.

OMG some of the negative comments leave me speechless 😕 I just found out today and it left me crying.DJAM and Travis with all the unimaginable pain they must of been going through had the courage&will to get out and safe their lives. My prays go out to them and their families in this time of tragedy.Doctors can do amazing things today and they will get all the best that medicine can offer. What we need to do is give them their privacy and prays that they suffer as little as possible in the days to come.God Bless the families that lost their loved ones.

My friends and I were going to send something to them both, kind of as a get well thing, but then we realized nothing would ever get through.

I hope they get past this relatively unscarred and even if they don’t, I don’t give a shit, they have great music.

And I don’t think they’ll be going on a plane any time soon.

  14. JaundiceMachine says:

Glad to hear that physically they’ll both be okay. Kind thoughts being sent their way, and also to the friends and families of the deceased, for the psychological rehabilitation.

I am just reading about this, and what a tragedy. I barely know who these guys are and my heart goes out to them. What an absolute horrible thing to happen….one minute your climbing onto a plane enjoying life, the next minute your on fire with death all around you. Just awful.
