Rachael Ray needs throat surgery, won’t be able to speak for 2 months (update)

Talkshow hostess and Martha Stewart wannabe Rachael Ray may have to take a two month hiatus from her show. The National Enquirer repors that doctors found a growth near her larynx and she’ll have to undergo surgery to remote it by the end of the year. It is not cancerous, but could be dangerous to her health. Rachael used to be a heavy smoker although she has since quit. The surgery will leave her unable to speak for up to two months and she is trying to pre-tape shows in preparation. It sounds like it is just recommended that she take two months to heal, and that she may not lose her voice entirely:

While the 40-year-old super chef has remained her usual perky, upbeat self as her new TV season unfolds, behind the scenes she and husband John Cusimano have been meeting with medical specialists about the operation that will be performed before the end of the year, say sources.

The former heavy smoker was stunned when doctors recently discovered a potentially dangerous growth near her larynx, says an insider…

Dr. Thomas, who has not treated the TV chef, told The Enquirer:

“With and growths in that area, there is always a very real concern about cancer. There was obviously a cancer scare for the patient. Fortunately, the biopsy showed the growth to be benign, but it still must be removed so it doesn’t interfere with the voice or breathing.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, October 13, 2008]

The expert quoted by the Enquirer goes on to say that two months is a longer recovery peroid than usual, but that when you rely on your voice to work you need to take time to heal after a throat operation. He said “To speak effectively on TV as Rachel must do could take up to two months.”

Many people say that Rachael has overstepped her capabilities with her new show despite its success. She was overperky but tolerable as a cooking show hostess and some find her style in a talk show format grating. She tends to interrupt and not let her guests talk enough. It looks like she’ll be forced to listen more in life, even if we won’t be privy to a speechless Ray on television.

It’s a rough thing to go through a cancer scare and not be able to talk much for two months and our thoughts go out to Ray. Throat surgeries can be risky and hopefully she has a very competent surgeon.

Update: Ray’s rep says this report is overblown and that although she does need surgery to remove a cyst on her vocal cord it is only a minor procedure with a recovery time of two weeks, not two months. They say the surgery is “a common in-and-out procedure that she will have in early December and it will not adversely effect any of her daytime show or Food Network tapings.”

Well, I hope she is ok. But I have to say, it might not be a bad thing for the world if she couldn’t talk for 2 months. She is so obnoxious!

  2. Kay says:

Wow this is like a gift from God! But I do hope shes ok. Surgery sucks ๐Ÿ™

  3. Amabo says:

Proof that there is a God.

  4. Kaiser says:

    Voodoo dolls work!

    (But seriously, surgery always sucks.)

  5. Syko says:

I’m pretty sure I could not go without talking for two months.

  6. KDRockstar says:

Amabo… took the words out of my mouth.

And I’m with you, Syko. My kids *love* it when I get laryngitis (about once a year… no, not a smoker). I end up whispering through my teeth. Try it… good times.

  7. anony says:

um, my thoughts don’t go out to her. I’ll save that for the really sick. She’s nails in a chalkboard. And I think she has over exposure too. I doubt people will miss her saying ‘EVOOO” and hearing her talk over people..\

  8. vdantev says:

-and there was a loud Hosannah !!

  9. HS says:

And there was quiet the third day…

  10. bros says:

    sublime irony.

  11. WTF?!?! says:

She obviously already had several nodes on her vocal cords, maybe this was one that went awry. I’m not particularly a fan, I find her rather annoying (EVOO, puh-lease), but I’m glad it’s not cancer, and I hope her recovery goes well.

  12. kate says:

her husband must be so happy.

  13. Victoria says:

Her raspy, croaky voice needs some repair.

  14. chaz says:

YESSSSSSS!! i can already tell those blissful months are going to fly by.

  15. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

OMG that headline was like a gift from heaven!

  16. Kat says:

With all that time on her hands, she can learn something useful, like sign language.

  17. Bonnie says:

To the people who made all those nasty remarks that preceded my comment, I ask you this: Would you say that to her face? What is it about anonymity that gives people the green light to be mean and nasty and say things in print that they would never repeat out loud? Small minds; all of you. Bet you would like to have her jobs and her money and her celebrity. She didn’t get where she is by being small and vicious. She is a happy genuine person. So, stuff it, small minds!

  18. Anna says:

What is wrong with all of you. I’d say you are all jealous of her. Hatred usually come out in a form of jealousy. I think she is very bubbly and quite pretty and further more, as for her voice being scratching, I think it makes her sound sexy. So all of you green people out there, if you don’t like her than why are you watching her show. Seems like you know her EVOO gig TO well. LAY OFF HER

  19. Samantha says:

Wow.. I cannot believe the terrible remarks. Even if you are not a fan, why do you get such pleasure putting her down? You are what is wrong with this world and the reason why we have mean children growing up to be mean adults. This is nothing more than cyber bullying and you should absolutely be ashamed.

  20. bigfan13 says:

Hey… like her or not, I think she deserves our support. Even if you’re driven crazy by “Yum-O” phrases. Good luck RR! ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. landi says:

Cruel and hateful comments, really people! Even if she can’t talk for two months, There are enough reruns of her show and her commercials will still be running. “Enjoy The Silence!”

  22. RRSux says:

i hate rachel ray because she is the queen of mediocrity and she does half assed take on ethic foods. im glad she is going to stfu for the next 2 months. we’re allowed to say our opinions because it is the friggin internet and we can voice our opinions.

  23. barb says:

interesting how rachel rays throat surgeon at the last minute decided that “intense vocal therapy” is the choice now and tomorrows surgery has been cancelled. I wouldnt want to operate near the vocal chords, (undoubtedly unecessarily), of an attorneys wife never mind a celebrity!

  24. JJ says:

Okay – so Rachael said she did NOT have the surgery on 12/16 — her husband John was on a radio show on that very day- and said she DID have the surgery and that is why she is not here for the interview… hmmm first off John- your wife just had surgery you ass hole why are you out whoring yourself and product and not home taking care of Rachael— and second do you even live in the same house with her John… she said no and you said yes…
Does anyone know the real truth- or is John not really married to Rachael- ?????????????

  25. vdantev says:

There goes our last fleeting hope of never hearing that kitchen bitch’s voice ever again.

  26. Stacey says:

I try to watch her shows because I love cooking and I am a cooking show junkie, but I am losing respect for Rachael Ray because her ego has become so inflated and she is not always truthful. When she was first on the FN, she was calm and very pleasant and did all of the 30 minute cooking on air. Now she’s constantly saying, “I’ll do this over the break”…but, what she says she is going to do over the break could not possibly be done by one person in 3 minutes…well, not me anyway…I cannot peel and cut 10 potatoes and cut celery in 3 minutes. And, her pots and pans and bowls, etc. are already sitting out (done by the FN staff)…even the microwave is already set so that all she does is press start. It takes me about 45-60 minutes to make her recipes (“from start to finish”). And, I just watched her 2007 holiday special where she made pickled Brussels sprouts, and she said she got the idea from a jar of them that she received in a gift basket. She said she could not remember the name of the company, but she would find out and put it in her magazine or on her TV show…shameless plug. She has a tendency to stretch the truth when she’s telling her stories. I guess she thinks she’s entertaining, but it seems fake to me. She knew days ahead of time that she was making the Brussels sprouts, and she says she always carries around her notebook…wouldn’t the name of the company already be in her notebook? Of course it would. But, what do I know…she made $16,000,000 last year, and I made $30,000! Oh well…I just don’t like the fakeness…it’s kind of creepy. My opinion…and we all have them. ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. Foodiness says:

I love the way Rachel Ray tries to create cleavage when there’s nothing there. She and Paula Dean are, without a doubt, the creepiest women on Food TV…they even out-creep Sandra Lee, and that’s saying something!

  28. Karen says:

To Stacy… Of coarse it’s fake.. It’s called TELEVISION!!!! DUH.
To all you Rachel Ray Haters… Either you don’t like short hot people, you don’t cook or you don’t have a life. I can think of a hell of a lot more annoying chefs of the cooking channel than Rachel. At least her food tasts good. And how can you expect a Sicilian New Yorker to be an expert at latin foods? Come on ya’ll, be realistic. She isn’t trying to be god. Let her be her.

  29. Jane says:

Rachael Freakin Rocks! All you haters can suck off

  30. BobF says:

I too think she is outstanding! My wife loved her and watched her until she passed away. People be nice.

  31. Kathy says:

As a child of a father with cancer who just passed away a year ago, I cannot believe all the hateful comments about Rachel Ray. Does you TV not have more than one channel on it? Are you not able to turn the channel when she is on TV if you dislike her so much. I agree many of you are jealous of her and her success. She started out by filling in for someone and landed a great show with 30-minute meals. I love the show even though I cannot make the meals in 30 minutes it gives me an idea for something new and different. Give her a break and try putting her in your prayers instead of putting her down.

  32. Jane says:

So Rachael had her surgery and her voice is flawless!

  33. Bea Clementi says:

Inspired thinking, I have bookmarked this and will come back to check

  34. Jeff says:

Rachael has never claimed to be a Chef, did any of you see her on Iron Chef with Mario Batali? When I first started watching Rachael she kind of annoyed me with all her little phrases but after I got past that she had some great ideas and recipes. I have a couple of her cook books and have gotten some great recipe ideas from them. I wish her all the health and happiness she can get.

  35. sky says:

Wow, you people make it seem like food network is the only channel you have. If you don’t like her shows, don’t watch them. I mean honestly people. Gain some common sense.

  36. Linda Pickenpaugh says:

Love to watch and listen to Rachael Ray. I absolutely find her voice comforting, and I find my mood is always lifted when I watch her. She’s sweet and entertaining.

  37. Debra Green- student and chef says:

dear rachel, l’ve had throat surgery to fix a Zenker’s diverticulum pouch in july5,2010. My voice has still not returned, l can understand your anxiety.
I LOVE YOUR SHOW -ABOUT MEALS UNDER THIRTY MINUTES. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
