Rachel Zoe & Rodge literally welcome baby boy Skyler Morrison

wenn32257191

Well, it finally happened! Rachel Zoe finally gave birth. I say “finally” because her due date was supposed to be around the Oscars, and I kind of wanted her to go into labor the Saturday before, alas. Also, Rachel was supposedly in labor on, like, Monday? And People Magazine is confirming it now, although they don’t say when she delivered. The named their son… Skyler Morrison. Skyler, because she wants to ensure that her son is a trendy gay hipster, and Morrison… I don’t know, probably for Jim Morrison.

Rachel Zoe is bananas for her new baby boy!

The celebrity stylist and husband Rodger Berman have welcomed their first child, a son named Skyler Morrison Berman, in Los Angeles, her rep tells PEOPLE. He weighed in at 6 lbs., 12 oz. and is 20 inches long.

“Mom and Dad ‘LITERALLY’ could not be happier or more in love with their son!” the couple said in a statement.

Zoe, 39, whose notorious work ethic is documented on The Rachel Zoe Project managed to take it easy during her pregnancy, which she recently called a “wonderful, drama-free time.”

While Zoe decided to forego gifts in favor of donations to the charity Baby2Baby at her recent baby shower, it’s safe to assume her son will be one fashionable baby.

Well, it’s all very cute, and I’m genuinely happy for Rachel and Rodge. Rodge in particular, because he seemed the broodier of the two. I’m also glad Rachel delivered safely and that the baby is healthy and everybody is good. I fully expect Rachel to be back to a size 00 by next week!

    Yee Hawww.. Good for her.

Wonder if she had him naturally?

  2. mln76 says:

Oh wow I hope the kid is healthy. Rodger must be over the moon.

  3. jdao says:

    Yaaay!

  4. insidescoop says:

i think thats the incorrect use of the word literally… but nevertheless congrats!

  5. lucy2 says:

    Glad everyone’s healthy.
All the Skylers, with various spellings, that I’ve ever met are girls, but I’m guessing it was originally a male name.

  6. guesty says:

*scans post for weight of baby* that’s a relief. Congrats to them.

  7. Julie says:

If she had any idea how much better she looked in the face with some weight on her, she’d give up the ED.

  8. Violet says:

I think Skyler is a cute name. never met anyone called that though.

  9. Laurie says:

An overdue baby weighing 6 pounds? Skylar probably wanted to stay skinny for his premiere party photos. Congrats to the family.

  10. pebbles says:

aw, congrats! i’m sure that he will be stylish!

  11. tiredofrumers says:

skyler is a passable name for a kid but a horrible name for a grown man. i find this a surprising choice. congrats to her on the birth, though.

  12. Kat says:

Congrats to them both. Skyler/Skylar is unusual, but I like it. I’d rather have my kid be the only Skylar in his grade than one of ten Aidens or Matthews.

  13. Ron says:

Skyler?! With a name like that and this kids predigree, they might as well start building his float for the pride parade in 2029 now.

  14. Erika says:

Skyler/Skylar are both variants of Schuyler (pronounced the same way), a name of Dutch origins meaning “scholar.”

My sister’s name is Skylar – but it works equally well for both girls and boys, I think.

  15. TeeTee says:

    whew, she did it–good!!

    good luck to the family!

her legs finally look decent in he pic above–good bye legs!!

  16. fabgrrl says:

My son goes to school with a little boy named Skyler.

  17. Zelda says:

What is with the quotations around “literally”? Are they sarcastically happy?

That is a massive pet peeve of mine.

As is the misuse of the word “literally”, so I hope the post title is facetious…

  18. Kim says:

Congrats to them both! What a blessing!

  19. GraciexDoes says:

Schuyler Whitney was a male character on “Edge of Night,” one of my Great-Grandmother’s soaps way back in the day. Can’t believe I remembered that.

  20. Bodhi says:

I went to school with a Schuyler. I love the name & his is still a cool guy, but man, what a pain in the ass to spell!

  21. annie says:

Alot of new Moms’ are naming their kids Skylar/Skyler it’s in danger of becoming trendy.

  22. Happymom says:

Mazel tov to them! And to throw in a snarky aside-I’m so glad she had a boy rather than a girl-she doesn’t strike me as a good role model body image wise-for girls and young women.

  23. Flotus says:

Mazel tov indeed! Welcome to this world, Skyler…

  24. Myra says:

Rachel Zoe says literally a lot, that’s why it was added to the title. It’s not a big deal.

  25. John Wayne Lives says:

@ julie. I know right! That first pic is unfortunate, but mostly because of her bad skin. But for the most part, the few lbs she put on during her pregnancy looked so good!
I feel bad for her. I think the ED has done its permanent damage and I think she used to be kinda pretty (like in the 90s) and she had the potential to age pretty. Look how nice looking her older sister is. And I bet she’s getting off on how impossibly small she’s been during her preggers and us all talking about it.
Anywho, I love that they had a boy. I think they really will be devoted, loving parents. And I hope its the butchyest (is that a word?) boy ever! First for Rodge cause he kinda deserves it. I mean, his life is basically channel Zoe 24/7. And second for Rachel, for reals. Maybe it will open her life and heart to something other than what she wants. Children open your horizons if u let them. Especially if you have a child who is a person very different than yourself

  26. Mshuffleupagus says:

For some reason I picture the baby looking like the dummy baby they used in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Maybe cause she’s so thin and dried up looking.

  27. courtney says:

um this isn’t the first Skylar/Skyler in hollywood Vince Neal’s youngest daughter was named Skylar. and there’s many Unisex names including Ashley Carroll Daryl Joey & Kim. Rachel & Rodger won’t be the ones raising him they’ll band him off to a nanny as she thinks she’s some huge star she’s not and some of them have admitted to feeling guilty about using nannies

  28. meilamon says:

Screw you bitches! Come on! My son’s name is Schuyler-yes, it is a BOY’S name, and it’s Dutch. Which my husband is, so I thought the name was great. I don’t like the phonetic spelling of it but to each their own. And I have no idea, but I have a hunch that if he does build a feathery, sparkly, fairy float later in life it won’t be because of his name.

  29. Cakes says:

Isnt that kind of small for a full term baby? My baby was 4 weeks early and she was 5lb 9 ounces and about 16 inches. I dont know much about baby weights but it strikes me as really small for full term.

  30. YAY says:

@meilamon – haha, your child is going to have to spell and explain his name his entire life. Good job! I know this to be true because my name is Ramalamadyngdong. 🙂

  31. Lucky Charm says:

@ Cakes – that’s a normal, healthy weight for a baby, especially considering how tiny (short & small boned) she is. My daughter was 5 days overdue and 7 lbs 9 oz and 20 inches long, and I’m 5’11.

    Congratulations to the new family!

  32. dahlia1947 says:

Wow this is so cool! I’m so happy for them! I want to see her baby at the shows for sure! I bet her husband is sooo happy! 🙂

  33. LolaBella says:

    Congrats to both of them.

Methinks Rodger is going to be a very doting hands-on Dad.

Is their show coming back to Bravo for another season now that Bradd is gone?

I’d like to see how Rachel was during her pregnancy.

  34. Erika says:

@Meilamon – Nice! My mom wanted to name my sister Schuyler, but my stepdad thought “Skylar” was easier for people to spell. I love my sister, and her name – but “Schuyler” is an awesome spelling, IMHO, and it’s the authentic one.

@Ron (and everyone else predicting that Rachel’s kid will be gay because she’s in fashion) … even if you’re joking, you are perpetuating the myth that sexuality is purely a choice, as opposed to an innate characteristic. Rachel’s kid has the same chance of being gay as any other kid. Actually, her son is lucky; if he grows up and realizes he’s gay, his mom will probably be 100% fine with it. I wish every gay youth in America could say that.

  35. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Those marionette lines (on either side of her mouth below her chin) in pic 2 make her look like a ventriloquist’s dummy!

@happymom, ITA. Thankfully ED’s are much less common in boys. So there’s less chance of her eating habits rubbing off on her son.

  36. Catherine says:

I seriously dislike that name. It is too trendy and every skyler I have known is a total brat. I would swear her hubby is in the closet.

  37. kiki says:

    @Julie

If Rachel does have an ED, it’s a disease. It’s not something you just decide to “give up”.

  38. gabs says:

The literally in the their statement is because Rachel is known for saying it all the time on her show when it isn’t necessary. Its kind of cute how she owns her phrases that people make fun of her for instead of being hurt about it. Mazel Tov!

  39. Isa says:

That’s a normal weight for her baby. I believe that typically, a smaller woman usually has smaller babies.

For example my husband was a 6 lb baby born to a woman that weighed about 95 lbs before birth. He is now 6’1 and weighs about 180.

My mother is obese and I weighed almost 10 lbs at birth. But that’s just a generalization, it’s possible for a small woman to have a large baby and a large woman to have a small baby.

Anyway, it’s also possible that her due date was off. I’m glad she’s given birth with no complications.

  40. courtney says:

presumptuous much that’s like saying the last child in the family shouldn’t have the mothers last name as a middle name like Lucy Dahl does. granted Ms Zoe is only a Stylist Ms Dahl’s late mum was a tony academy award golden globe & emmy winning actress beloved by generations of film lovers and co-stars alike. complaining that they named him skyler is like people complaining if Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon particially named their twin son James after James Dean who is her favorite actor & their Twin daughter particially Marilyn after her favorite actress Marilyn Monroe when they’re born in a few weeks. if he doesn’t like his name he can always change it when he comes of age

  41. Isa says:

Courtney- How do you remember this stuff??

Quick! What was the weather like on September 13, 2001?!?!

    And what were you wearing?!?

  42. Bellatrix says:

Skyler/Skylar/Schuyler is neither a first nor last name in the Netherlands. Lemme tell you… 😀
It makes quite a few Dutch/Flemish people laugh when they hear about it. But hey, to each their own! In any way, it’s not the “authentic spelling” as this name may at one point have been a very rare last name and that’s about it. You can research the data about it on the Meertens Instituut (specialised in several things regarding the variations of Dutch spelling, including names) website which will tell you that “Schuyler” corresponds to less than 5 people in the Netherlands for first or last name. Sorry to pop your bubble!

Also, it’s been a loooong time since “scholar” has been said “geschoold” in Dutch. So Schuyler really seems to be one of those (many) names that has been desperately fit into an etymology case. Sure, some local variants of Dutch and Flemish may have, at one point, said “schuil” or “schuyl” instead of “school” (which isn’t pronounced the American obviously as the “sch” sound is not equivalent to “sk” neither is does the double O stand for “ooh”, it’s just a long O sound) but that is about it…

Ah, the mysteries of cultural appropriation.

As for Rachel Zoe’s kiddo: I’d have gone with Morrison. Sounds really cool.
And the weight is indeed rather small for a full-term/possibly overdue baby. It could be a coincidence (some just carry little children) or it could be due to a lack of food intake. Who knows?

  43. wunderkindt says:

So she gave birth at her real age of 49 and not the fake age of 39?
Congrats to her!!! This is even more amazing than previously thought.

  44. meilamon says:

Ok Bellatrix, not beating this dead thing with a stick or anything but my husbands family is from upstate NY, and there is an area there named Schuylerville, founded in 1691 by Dutch settlers. So for it not to be a Dutch name is curious?

  45. ursula says:

I was happily surprised that she decided to go with charitable contributions over gifts. Good for her! Congrats to the new family.

  46. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

    @Isa, LOL. I know right?

  47. Bellatrix says:

@meilamon: the story is simply that Schuyler must have been a rare patronym that did not survive at all. It is not at all common in the Netherlands or Flemish Belgium. You can check the national stats of both countries as well as their patronym records. It simply doesn’t lead anywhere. Either something got lost along the way (and three centuries back is way too close for loss of such information in Western Europe), either it just isn’t really that Dutch of a patronym. Not to sound bitchy, but Schuyler is not a Dutch first name. You’ll found “Schuyl” in some patronyms though but that’s about it. The only Schuyl I can think of is a Dutch philosophy teacher who used some of Descartes’ theories to build up his own views on platonism. Florens Schuyl.
But no first name of Schuyler. It genuinely appears to have been made up accross the pond and that is not a mere personal opinion (check the database I mentioned earlier on: http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/nvb/).

If it’s any consolation, the verb “schuilen” means to hide.
I’m sure your Dutch husband could shed some light on this though. He must know the language and the usual names as well as patronyms of the Netherlands.

  48. tango says:

My 16 year old nephew is named Schuyler and he’s way cool. I doubt his name will have any bearing on his sexuality.

    Congrats to Rachel and Rodger.

  49. Amandahugandkiss says:

@Zelda- everyone is misusing ‘literally’ because Rachel does it all the time on her show.

    Literally ALL THE TIME.

  50. Isa says:

Amandahugandkiss– Everyone was misusing literally waaaay before Rachel Zoe.
    But she certainly didn’t help.

  51. mia says:

Skyler? Definitely a push toward a life of interior design.

  52. Becca says:

I am so glad she had a boy. I can’t imagine the hell she would put a daughter through. She would definitely project her twisted eating habits on the child.

  53. Jack109 says:

Her due date wasnt around the oscars, she said her due date was the end of march. When she mentioned him not coming before the oscars (and this is just me assuming) she was saying with her luck and hoping that he wouldnt come early.
My daughter was born 10 days before her due date and was only 5lbs 8oz and completely healthy. She didn’t have a single health issue in her babyhood and is now a super healthy 9 yr old. She was just a small baby. So 6 1/2 pounds for an already under-weight older woman is awesome!
His name is amazing and when he’s older I’m sure he’ll just go by Sky, which on the right guy could be pretty hot.
