Dita Von Teese’s casual attire: too matchy-matchy or goddess in red?

dita_von_teese_07_wenn5660203

These are some new photos of Dita Von Teese out and about in LA yesterday. She stopped by the Vivienne Westwood boutique and picked out some pieces at Fred Segal. Can you believe that Dita walks out of the house looking like this, and she’s just out to do a spot of shopping? Amazing. Anyway, I love the look from head to toe. The world is Dita’s red carpet and I admire her commitment to always looking pulled-together and fabulous. I love her hair like this. I love the sexy red dress, which is cut beautifully. I love the black and white clutch, and I love the matchy-matchy shoes. If you’re going to do matchy-matchy, do it like this.

Meanwhile, Dita recently did an interview with the NYT’s Style Magazine. The full piece is here, and it’s totally worth a read if you want to hear about Dita’s beauty secrets. Here are some highlights:

TT: If pressed for time when doing your makeup, what are your bare essentials?
DVT: Flawless skin is the most important thing, then red lips. In exactly that order. Red lips don’t look good on blotchy, uneven skin. I use Dior Capture Totale Foundation, and a dusting of Mineralize Powder by MAC. Dior Dolce Vita is my favorite red lipstick. When in a rush, I tie my hair back and throw on a great pair of sunglasses…and voila! Don’t underestimate the cosmetic power of sunglasses. It’s worth spending a bit of money on a quality pair. I usually go for Dior or Louis Vuitton.

TT: I can tell that underneath the foundation and powder you have lovely skin. How do you care for it?
DVT: I have really sensitive skin, and a few allergies, so I stay on it. I recently had a bout with rosacea. I was told by a big name dermatologist, “this is your life now,” because he couldn’t figure out how to get rid of it. A million creams later, I went to a real skin doctor in Orange County. He prescribed a pill and one lotion, and boom, it was gone. The moral being: find the guy who takes your insurance.

TT: He sounds knowledgeable. Did he give you any other tips?
DVT: Yes, he said it doesn’t matter what moisturizer you use. Just make sure you put it on right after cleansing, while your skin is still damp. That way your pores can absorb it while they are still open. So choose any cream you like for the face and body. My choice is always Creme de la Mer- it’s pricey, but so worth it.

TT: Who are your favorite beauty icons?
DVT: Oh, my all time favorite is Betty Grable. Her look, her humor and most of all her spirit and sense of individuality. Just like Madonna 20 years ago. She was unlike anyone, and stayed true to herself. Modern day, I find Carmen Dell’Orefice very unique and fantastic.

TT: Has it taken time to find what works best for you?
DVT: My look has taken time to evolve. I’ve gotten to a place where I feel pretty and confident. I think that’s important for anyone. Personally, I have no reason to change it, no matter what people say or advise. I will save baring all for the person I am intimate with.

TT: Being a natural blonde, what do you use to darken your brows?
DVT: It’s easy with Just For Men hair dye. I’m kind of a do-it-yourself person as far as my hair, makeup and styling go. I’m in the process of writing a beauty book, where I do it all. It’s hard work. But nothing good comes easy.

TT: As for your incredible figure- how do you stay in shape?
DVT: I think variety is key. I prefer the competitive atmosphere of a classroom setting, like yoga or Pilates. That keeps me going. Although performing on stage is great exercise! I just haven’t been doing it as much as I’d like. It’s all the requirements and special effects I need to do a show. Many venues are not big enough or are not set up for everything. Many can’t accommodate my Opium Den, for example, which is part of my most opulent show. I won’t settle for middle of the road- I go for grand. I’m pretty particular, as you might have guessed.

[From The NYT Style Mag]

I love her. And I love that she’s all DIY beauty – that’s really cool to me, because I always thought she probably gets lots of expensive skin treatments and stuff. It’s cool that she has answers for “how do you do this?” kind of questions. And Just For Men dye on her brows! Awesome.

She’s fab. I hope I can soon get over her lapse in judgment ie. M. Manson.

  5. Heatheradair says:

    WANT. THOSE. SUNGLASSES.

    She’s a doll…

Sidenote….Didn’t she do an adult film once, with another woman?

  9. sapphire says:

    DIVINE !

  10. Hollowdoll says:

She’s quite the saucy bitch. She looks fabulous. I love that she admits she’s high maintenance, but does most of the work herself.

  11. Bubbling says:

Jesus, I have to be the only person in the world who doesn’t get the Dita hype. So much so it’s irritating just hearing people going on how awesome she is. I may be dummy peasant, but in my books she is a stripper with 5 kilos ever present make up who used to date douche lord Manson

  12. Luci says:

    Awesome, smart, gorgeous and to-die-for-style!!
    LOVE

  13. Jackson says:

The zebra bows on the shoes are too much. And are her legs really that pale? Please tell me she’s wearing some kind of covering on them to make them look that way.

  14. Dorothy says:

    She is gor-gee-ous!! 🙂

  15. RocketMerry says:

Lovely lady. I especially love her being able to see beyond mainstream beauty impositions, while using some of them – you know, Dior, Creme de la mer…

  16. womanfromthenorth says:

Great … She always looks great 😉

  17. guesty says:

Does she ever wear jeans or sweats & a ponytail?

  18. Blue says:

@ Bubbling, no you’re not. I don’t get it either. I don’t see anything special or different about her.

  19. duh says:

I love her! She has her own style and always looks immaculate!

  20. BB says:

Perfect, just when I was looking for a new foundation! Totally trying the dior one since I am that pale too, and I can’t seem to find a good match. If it’s pale enough for Dita, it should do for me 😀

  21. Ari says:

I would have never pegged her for a natural blond – she is gorgeous and sweet!

  22. margaritachum says:

    she’s perfect.=)
i love the dress and the shoes and the clutch. and i love the fact that she says it’s hard work. she doesn’t claim “oh i’m just blessed with good genes.” she high maintenance but she does most of the work.

    @jackson
yes her legs are that pale and so are mine. we don’t use anything to make them look like that. we just stay away from the sun.

  23. alma says:

she is BEAUTIFUL!! love mostly everything she wears and i looove her hair!
she does wear too much make up. looks heavy 😛

  24. kwoww says:

    now thats a lady.

  25. Praise St. Angie! says:

    I love this look.

and I love that THIS is “casual” for her.

and I also love that she’s high maintenance but does the work by herself.

the only think I don’t love about her is that she licked on Manson. EW.

  26. Dizzybenny says:

this is how ”hollywood starlets” should look like all the time.
not with sweats or the no pants look (ugh)but a look of class.they get paid millions in movies from our money we spend, the least they can do is dress up when they go out of the house.
that goes the same for the guys.

  27. jc126 says:

I think she’s beautiful and admire her commitment – I can’t imagine doing that all the time. How is she going to keep that going her whole life?
However – did you guys see her high school yearbook photo? She was a gorgeous blonde, with sort of a surfer girl look. Stunning. I would’ve just gone with that look. But I’m lazy.

  28. dahlia1947 says:

Matchy matchy? NO, not at all! She’s all about 40’s glamour and women back then dressed this way. She looks great and i love her shoes!

  29. ladybert62 says:

    She looks good.

  30. Audrey says:

Bubbling – you’re not the only one. AND, for the record, Dita, pores don’t absorb anything. If they did, we’d drown while taking shower. I don’t get her at all. Too much make up, too much everything.

  31. Deb says:

I love the way she managed to match red with zebra shoes to her red dress and also to her zebra bag at the same time.

  32. Photo JoJo says:

I admit, I don’t think she can really do anything wrong, fashionwise. She has a style, and she commits to it, and it’s usually awesome.

  33. Kat says:

Gorgeous, as always. Particularly love this outfit. The tiny touches of pattern (her clutch, the embellishments on her shoes) set the whole look off beautifully.
    Dita can do no wrong.

  34. bluhare says:

I bet most of the time she doesn’t do the makeup etc. and no one has a clue who she is.

  35. teehee says:

    @ Bubbles thats ok 😉
I dont think all starlets need to look like this, thoguh– its a whole lot of pressure and work to look like that all the time. But I’ll take this over skimpy and trendy any day– this is timeless good.

  36. Ana says:

I admire her beauty, her style and her attitude. But I do think the shoes are too matchy-matchy. Maybe if they were zebra pattern with red bows, then it’d be perfect. Love the pieces separately, though.

  37. original kate says:

@ bubbling: there is a difference between stripping and burlesque. the word burlesque is a french word meaning to poke fun at something and originally it was performed by men and poked fun at politics.

burlesque dancers are often professional dancers (some even incorporate ballet) and their routines and costumes are lavish and sexy yet light-hearted. there is alot of sly humor involved as well and a celebration of different types of beauty. in other words, they aren’t bleached blondes with bolt-ons shaking their asses to “living on a prayer” with a bored look on their faces while drunk guys try to hit on them. you should go see a burlesque show – they are fun and very empowering for women. the one time i went to an actual strip club it was the most depressing thing ever and i couldn’t wait to leave.

for anyone interested there is a great documentary called “a wink and a smile” available on netflix. it’s about a group of women who sign up to go through the 8 week course at the school of burlesque in seattle, culminating with a “recital,” and has interviews with burlesque performers. i’ve been to a couple of recitals (my friend runs the school) and the women are always so happy they did it. it is really enlightening for those who are not sure what burlesque is.

as for dita, she always looks immaculate and elegant. love her and can’t wait for her new book.

  38. girl says:

I want to not like her (saying she will save “baring all” for whoever she’s being intimate with when she’s done porn type stuff before) but dammit, when I see her, she reminds me of old Hollywood glamour. Remember back in the day when the general public didn’t know what a starlets snatch looked like?

  39. Ferbie says:

I love her posture. I just sat up straighter in my chair.

  40. 4Real says:

    FIERCE! That is all…

  41. Annaloo says:

Good GOD, Gwyneth could take a lesson from this fabulous diva on how to speak to people without condescending. “Find the guy that takes your insurance!”

    LOVE IT! More tips, Dita!!

  42. Ron says:

    What’s not to love?

  43. K-MAC says:

So love this woman….she always, always looks great!

  44. Slim Charles says:

@ Original Kate I just added A Wink and a Smile to my Netflix queue.
Love Dita. Ca’t wait to read her book.

  45. Kim says:

Even the TONS of makeup she wears cant detract from fact that she is not a pretty girl facially.

Burlesque is a fancy name for stripping – dont kid yourselves – they are the exact same thing.

and Dita started in porn NOT burlesque.

  46. Whitey Fisk says:

Great interview. Incredibly beautiful skin. I am finding myself liking her – although I am uncomfortable with how much she resembles Rumer Willis in these photos. Yikes!

  47. RHONYC says:

Don’t underestimate the cosmetic power of sunglasses. It’s worth spending a bit of money on a quality pair.

The moral being: find the guy who takes your insurance.

what do you use to darken your brows?
DVT: It’s easy with Just For Men hair dye.

    duly.
    noted.
    adore.
    her!!!

    😉

  48. original kate says:

“Burlesque is a fancy name for stripping – dont kid yourselves – they are the exact same thing.”

@ kim: have you ever been to a burlesque show? just curious.

  49. Nemma says:

I’d take her over someone like Madonna or Gaga anyday. She’s found what she likes and she’s staying with it, being true to herself. Reinventing yourself every 0.5 seconds is maybe slightly more interesting, but it fits well with her burlesque and, as she says, why change something that works?

(I’m pale too. Don’t hate on the pale. I’d rather be pale than have skin cancer or orange-itis.) 🙂

  50. Mairead says:

Love her!! She is a bloody goddess! When she talks makeup, she’s the beautician us pasty girls always want to meet. And although she’s never engaged in anything remotely challenging in interviews, I like how straightforward she is.

  51. Micki says:

She’s always true to herself – my respect! And when her book is on the market I’ll buy for sure, her advice reminds me of Nina Garcia’s style books.

  52. Bubbling says:

@ original Kate- I’ll make sure to check out that doc, I know there is a certain elegance within burlesque but I couldn’t classified as an art just yet. Maybe I should let it grow on me, it’s just that all I see when I look at Dita is someone who changed the form opposite way and suddenly get worshiped by masses. She whitens her skin as opposed to tanning, also wears tons of make up, and the only thing I give her credit for-that girl can dress, but even her style isn’t original, she is not “influenced” by golden Hollywood era, she is strait copying it

  53. Praise St. Angie! says:

“Even the TONS of makeup she wears cant detract from fact that she is not a pretty girl facially.”

um…have you see her year book photo where she’s blond?

she’s actually quite pretty. not drop-dead gorgeous, but pretty for sure.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-524618/Revealed-The-sweet-face-Dita-Von-Teese-queen-burlesque.html

  54. original kate says:

@ bubbling – yes, you should check out the documentary. i think you’ll see there is a certain art form to burlesque: every good burlesque show includes singing & dancing (in the old school vaudeville style), lots of laughter as well as striptease. there is usually a drag queen or two thrown in and often “boylesque” as well. one of my fave performers is a guy who studied voice and dance at julliard and is a great dancer and totally hilarious. yes, he goes down to a g-string and wears glittery pasties!

as for dita, yes she has totally embraced the old hollywood style, but the fact that she is one of the few who doesn’t follow the trends of inflated lips, orange skin and general bobbleheadedness does make her somewhat original in this day and age. i say somewhat original because really, who can be totally original? everyone is influenced by someone else, but at least pale skinned, perfectly coiffed and dressed to the nines elegance stands out in the sea of skank that is most celebs.

  55. Cherry Rose says:

For all you going about Dita’s porn she made with another women. Have you even seen it? It’s not like a lot of other porn you’d see. Compared to most, it’s actually has a classy feel to it.

And yes, burlesque is much different from stripping. For starters, there’s an auidence, not people just milling about tables waving their money around. And they hardly ever go fully nude. It’s a show and the girls work pretty hard at it.

And it’s not like Dita ever tries to hide her past or anything. She’s quite upfront about it when asked.

But her outfit is gorgeous. She’s a very beautiful woman and has yet to mess her face up with plastic surgery.

  56. I would love for her to expound on her skin care regimen – I have ubersensitive skin, and I’d love to hear a little more from her perspective. (Or anyone else’s – if you care to share!)

“The moral being: Find the guy that takes your insurance.”

Isn’t that the god damn truth? I had to have a mole biopsied, and while I was at the clinic I asked what he (the dermatologist) could prescribe for my wicked eczema. His response? “Cold showers and Dove Body Wash.”

My insurance rejected my claim, and I received a bill for. . . more than I care to say. (Suffice it to say, it’s a lot on a student budget.) A week later I broke out in full-body hives. Head to toe. Which of course aggravated my eczema. . . It’s been an itchy spring.

“Dove Body Wash.” Take my money and fuck yourself with it, asshole.

  57. Shoe_Lover says:

I love her so so so much. she commits to elegance and glamour and I love that. I wish more people actually cared about the way they presented themselves to the world instead of leaving the house in crappy track suit pants and pluggers on their feet (or worse- crocs)

@ Stephy2585- yes she did a porn but its not your average porn. its sort of “arty” and Dita sells it on her website so its not like its a secret.

Also- burlesque is different to stripping. Its more about teasing and the build up where as stripping is all about getting naked. Dita’s shows are really well done- one I saw on youtube has her sitting in her martini glass and then spinning around in it. she looked so cute and had such a big smile on her face that I couldn’t help but smile and giggle

Lets call the Marilyn Manson thing a lapse in judgement. We’ve all had a guy where we look back later and say “what was I thinking?’

@ MissyAggravation I also have sensitive, pale skin (which can be quite hazardous in a hot Australian summer especially in Queensland). I use “white musk” body wash from the body shop, “St Ives” body moisturiser and “Advanced Naturals” cleansers, toners, hydrating gel and moisturiser for my face. Advanced naturals is an Australian company so I’m not sure if they are available outside of Oz but just make sure whatever you use is natural and organic because the chemicals are the cause of the skin irritation. With regards to makeup- I used to use mineral makeup but it wasn’t giving me the coverage I desired so I tried all kinds of make up and Bobbi Brown was the only one that didn’t cause break outs. Bobbi Brown also has a skin care range which I use in the morning to go under my make up (and advanced naturals at night) which is also really good so you could use her skin care range exclusively. As a plus Bobbi Brown’s and advanced naturals products are not tested on animals

I hope you find something that works for you

  58. Mairead says:

Could I suggest Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour cream? Even mixed with a base like Silcock’s Base it’s beyond amazing for my dermatitis and the tiny bit of ezcema I have. I know it’s not the same thing, but I recommend it all the time to the builders I deal with – stick it on the hands at night and plain Emoliating Cream/Silcocks Base/E45 or Neutrogena during the day.

And Clinique need their asses warmed for getting rid of Perscriptives, their foundations are the best I’ve ever used colour and texture wise.

  59. S says:

She is sensational. Absolutely worship her.

  60. Bill Hicks is God says:

@Dizzy: The Hollywood starlets of yesteryear were “owned” by the studios, contracted up the wazoo. The studio dictated where you went, when and how you were photographed so nothing could potentially reflect back on the picture companies. Their images were tightly controlled. That’s why you never saw Joan Crawford out marketing in a mu-mu and curlers. They had staff who did all of that public stuff for them; drugs and booze were delivered; personal shoppers, that’s not a new concept nor is designers bringing the clothing and jewelry to them.

The “stars” that do that now are narcissistic boob-mashes like J-Lo and Marc Anthony; the ones with tons of fame and cash who do go out looking like Hobos want to get papp’d. Or they’re deluded in thinking “they’re just regular people” uh, no, you’re not.

Regular people worry about things like rent, car payments and the weekend, not if their Cream of the Sea has been delivered in placental bubble-wrap yet. For ‘regular’ folks Cream of the Sea is Fettucine Alfredo with shrimp at Red Lobster.

I think the shoes are the best part of the ensemble by the way. Too bad they look too big for her. Is this a trend? I see it everywhere and it just ruins whatever look is going on.

  61. RHONYC says:

    @ Nemma

way to rep for pale chicks.

i’m black by the way & i think any skin that is flawless is lovely, i.e:

    Dita Von Teese
    Alek Wek
    Nicole Kidman
Whitney Houston (even with the drugs, damn her good genes!)
    Tyra Banks
    Cate Blanchett
    Kelly Rowland
and my GIRL, Tilda!!! (adore her 4 evs!)

    😉

  62. Dingles says:

She always looks fabulous. I admire her so much, not just for her style and sense of individuality but her for attitude towards womanhood in general. She’s a big proponent for women simply taking care of themselves and being the best they can be.

  63. sashavice says:

This isn’t matchy-matchy, This is perfect, I thought, slowly scrolling down the first photo-until I hit the shoes. The bows are too much. Everything else is perfect.

@ Jackson: Don’t be a snotty cow, why do you have to hate on someone’s natural skin color?

  64. Crash2GO2 says:

I love it when stars give makeup tips and tell you what lipsticks they wear! Too bad I don’t wear red. 🙁 That foundation sounds to die for, but WAY too expensive for my budget.

  65. Sam says:

I didn’t really care for her until after I saw an interview she did after splitting with MM. She seemed so genuine. The superficial appearance just disappeared and she seemed so…normal I guess is the word I’m looking for. For as beautiful as she is and how lusted after, she got cheated on, and I think that is a wake up call for most people. Humbling. You could see how insecure she was in that moment, even if it didn’t last for very long.

  66. Gewerbestrom says:

very Great write-up, I was normaler visitor of the Homepage, maintain up the excellent operate, and It’s going to be a regular visitor for a long time.Best wishes Andrew

  67. Josephina Yanish says:

I have use Makari for 6 years it has no effect omn me. Origin is one product that leaves my face clean and beautiful but it does not lighten or tone as descibed

  68. Markus Omundson says:

Hi Virginia,My favorite products are the eye cream, velvet rose and African soap, but my absolute “new” favorite has to be the Belle Tonic!! Every time you “re-make” the tonic, it just gets better and better! I love the Roiboos and other new inredients that you’ve added to it. It is like an “elixir” and my face just drinks it up!! I think it even helps to absorb the moisturizer better! And my other favorite, for really dry skin (especially in the winter, before you go out and enjoy your outdoor activities) is to put on some hemp oil and then moisturize with your fave day cream!Thank you for being so considerate of the environment and to what we put on our skin!!
