Cheryl Cole is too hurt, damaged & humiliated to return to the UK ‘X Factor’

fp_7339847_barm_xfactor_04_42

I’m not sure if people still care at this point, but I’m still following The Cheryl Cole Debacle. Last week, the news came out that Cheryl Cole had been abruptly fired from the American version of The X Factor. Various reasons were discussed: Cheryl’s thick accent, which might have been difficult for Americans to understand; Cheryl’s lack of chemistry with Paula Abdul, who is crazy; and perhaps even my theory, that Americans have enough people who are famous for no reason, and we don’t need the UK exporting their talent less faux-celebrities. No, that’s not fair to Cheryl. She’s HUGE in the UK. She’s a genuine celebrity, and lots of British people adore her. Anyway, as I mentioned last Thursday, after she was fired, Cheryl went back home to London and is said to be hiding out, not answering calls because she’s so humiliated. The British tabloids were all over it this weekend, and The Mail grabbed some of the greatest hits from various stories. Interestingly enough, there are lots and lots of quotes attributed to Cheryl from The News of the World. Remember the wire-tapping scandal with NOTW? Yeah. I feel like we’re reading transcripts from Cheryl’s phone conversations with friends.

Devastated Cheryl Cole is said to have refused ITV’s £2.5million offer to return to the UK X Factor, by not taking calls from show bosses before her deadline last night. And a friend of the singer revealed she said of Cowell: ‘I’ve been used. Why put me through it? It’s cruel’, after being axed from the US version. The 27-year-old is apparently distraught and still refusing to talk out other offers, while she has been holed up in a London flat with her mother Joan.

Cheryl’s deadline to decide whether to return to the UK X Factor was midnight last night, but as she apparently ignored Simon Cowell’s attempts to contact her, and has consequently blown her chance to return. Filming will now commence on Wednesday sans Cole, according to the News of the World.

A close associate of Cowell told the tabloid: ‘The brutal truth is that no one is bigger than the show – not Cheryl and not even Simon. We have a huge show and we need to get on the road on Wednesday and we needed to know if Cheryl was coming with us. We have bent over backwards for Cheryl and she hasn’t engaged with us. She is out. That’s showbusiness.’

Another source added that show bosses gave the Girls Aloud star a ‘ridiculous’ deadline to try and reply to, which made it almost impossible for her to accept. Cowell apparently gave her an ultimatum, telling her: ‘Do you want another job on more money? It’s a question: yes or no?’

But even if she had said yes, executives are said to be worried that her attitude might hinder the panel.

One told the Sunday Mirror: ‘It’s an entertainment show and the judges have to be cheerful and positive. We are not sure she is in the right place to take it on.’

The British panel will now consist of Louis Walsh, 58, Take That singer Gary Barlow, 40, N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos, 22, and former Destiney’s Child star Kelly Rowland, 30.

Cheryl was dumped from the US X Factor last Tuesday and replaced by Nicole Scherzinger after having already started filming auditions.

A source close to the singer said: Cheryl is deeply humiliated and she wants Simon to make it clear that she wasn’t sacked, but was needed back in Britain.’

But Cheryl apparently told a friend after being axed from the US version: ‘It’s unfair. They did tests beforehand with focus groups and everything was fine. I was flirting with the guys who auditioned and I had good banter with the panel. I don’t know what more I could have done. I know this was Simon’s decision and that’s why it’s so hurtful. I don’t know why nobody told me I hadn’t been performing well,’ the News of the World reported.

Yesterday ITV bosses apparently pulled out all the stops to woo her back to the UK show, with a massive offer of £2.5 million to return. But after being humiliated last week, it seems the star has decided to not return despite the huge offer.

Cheryl is said to still be furious with Cowell and likened the humiliation to that of her divorce from philandering ex-husband Ashley Cole. She apparently told a friend: ‘After what happened in my marriage I made it quite clear I found it impossible to trust another man. But I did trust Simon, I let myself believe he had my best interests at heart. Now he’s done this to me.’

She went on to vent that she apparently never wanted to do the American show but Cowell had pushed her into it, promising he’d make her a star Stateside. The fragile singer is also thought to have said she was not in the right frame of mind to return to the British show after being axed from the US.

‘I can’t hide my feelings. This is all so raw for me right now. My life has been turned upside down – they have treated me really badly’, she told a friend according to the News of the World.

Since arriving back in London, Cheryl is said to have been hiding away in a flat with her mother, not wanting to see or talk to anyone. She is said to now be contemplating her future, as she had previously planned this year around touring with X Factor. But other offers are claimed to be pouring in for the pop star, including an apparent deal with the BBC. The tabloid claimed that BBC bosses are keen to sign her for their new singing show The Voice. She is also said to have had an offer from Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label, according to the Daily Star Sunday.

A source said: ‘Literally every TV network is after her now. But she’s not ready to speak to anyone yet.’

Although Simon and Cheryl are not talking at the moment, Cowell is said to be angered over the way things turned out and had a massive row with executives at Fox.

A source old the Star: ‘He is absolutely seething right now, and despite also being a producer on the show, he feels as if his opinions mean absolutely nothing. The whole show is in crisis.’

Mail Online contacted a spokesperson for Simon Cowell and ITV but they refused to comment on the reports.

[From The Mail]

As I’ve said, I do feel for Cheryl. Just a few months ago, she was on top of the world with soaring popularity in the UK, about to make her big, splashy debut in America. Now she’s not only been publicly humiliated by getting fired from the American version, but now she’s lost her job with the British version. I hope she saved her money!

God, I liked her a lot more than Abdul.

  2. matt says:

I really dislike her, but I do feel for her on this one. She has been roylally screwed by Simon, who she considered a friend. Even if it wasn’t his decision, he has the power to keep her on the show if he really wanted.

  3. duh says:

Get over yourself girl! Why not come back to X-Factor UK if they want you there? You will never get any better offer!

  4. brin says:

This story is all over the place….I read/heard that the reason she left was because she was homesick!

  5. J.D.M.J. says:

Americans have enough people who are famous for no reason, and we don’t need the UK exporting their talent less faux-celebrities.
    ****************
Maybe not, but we probably still owe them for tolerating Madonna.

  6. lin234 says:

Meh, she got paid millions for a couple of appearances. It’s not look there aren’t other offers worth millions pouring in. She’ll get over it.

  7. Phoenix says:

I feel kind of bad for her being humiliated like this but really I’m just glad that she’ll be out of the public eye for a while hopefully. I can see why she didn’t go back to the UK X Factor but I think a lot of her fans here might see it as a slap in the face. The show made her the “nation’s sweetheart” (bleurgh), so I don’t know what she’ll do next. Hopefully it won’t involve singing or appearing on TV.

  8. @ confuzzle “good. Slag”

    Are you SERIOUS with that?
We are now calling woman who have been fired.. ‘slags’? Do you even know what the meaning of ‘slag’ is?
My, what a wonderful and progressive attitude to have towards women.

  9. Julie says:

Cheryl Cole is a user and this is karma at work. Last year, she could have saved one of the XF contestants but refused even though Gamu was the best. Add the way she played the victim when divorcing Ashley and the malaria incident, a devious character emerge of always playing to the gallery for profit. Lastly, Abdul and Cowell together is pure entertainment and I hope XFactor Uk don’t have her back!!!

  10. Louise says:

I doubt she lost the UK XFactor. I’m sure if Cheryl called today they would take her back. I’m just curious as to why she was fired. The accent and no chemistry excuses doesn’t seem like a good enough reason. Unless every single contested kept saying what did you say to Cheryl.

  11. carrie says:

    who?

  12. Gabs says:

Im not a fan of hers BUT I think it was cruel to fire her before an episode aired at all. They should have made a decision before she went to any auditions. Idk. Besides, replacing her with Scherzinger? Whats the point? And ABDUL? Paula is ridiculous. This show is gonna suck

  13. Mae says:

I have to comment here, I live in the UK and really – WE DO NOT ALL ADORE HER.

Seriously – check the mail comments on any stories about her – the majority of the uk think shes toilet-attendant beating trash, who got very, VERY lucky.

Regardless, I still feel a bit for her – but when you bring nothing to the table music-wise/ talent-wise and rely on your powerful friends (cowel)… these things can happen.

  14. Jenny says:

Who the hell is this woman?

  15. Flan says:

    @No Cycling No Horses

Don’t worry about trolls like that. Saying stuff like that is their revenge on women, after finally realizing most of us are smarter than he is.

  16. Ria says:

you seem to be really into all this British stuff – first the wedding, now this Cow, I mean Cole.

  17. Mia says:

I don’t know one person who knew who this girl was or cared that she was going to be on the X Factor. They are all about Paula’s return to TV.

Sorry, she got fired, but that’s life. Win some, lose some.

  18. the original bellaluna says:

    Simon really is a d!ck, isn’t he.

  19. Blue says:

I feel bad for her. I mean yes shit happens. But how do you publicly humiliate someone like that, then think offering her more $$ is gonna make it better. That’s kind of insulting.

  20. Girafe99 says:

@Julie damn right we can’t forgive her for the Gamu incident;)

But in all seriousness ever since she punched the toilet attendant I’ve not been able to warm to this women, so whilst alot of my fellow Brits have fallen for the dimples and smile, I feel less inclined to have sympathy cos for a moment there I thought we got a reprieve with her US X Factor gig, why oh why didn’t she take the elocution lessons

  21. flourpot says:

She getting attention. Offers. And hiding from the world while everyone talks about her and she becomes more popular.

Wouldn’t surprise me if she and Simon co-planned this because he doesn’t want to do the show anymore or whatever reason he’s pulled out of his ass.

    I think they’re playing everyone.

  22. Lila says:

The Guardian did a pretty good story about this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/may/26/simoncowell-cheryl-cole

Fox brass NEVER wanted her in the first place, Simon did. And that’s his problem. All I got from Cheryl was her entitlement. Did she ever once consider that Fox and Cowell know their audience by now and that they may be right? And I always got the impression that her being on the show was about her furthering her music career… which is disturbing

  23. garvels says:

She needs to grow up and get over her huge ego. It was a business decision probably based on the fact that her comments were difficult to understand due to her thick accent. I have no sympathy for a celebrity who turns down millions of dollars for a comparable show just to play the victim.

  24. OXA says:

She is arrogant and stupid for thinking she did not need the elocution lessons offered her. I was born and raised in the UK and if I can not understand her thick accent or her mumblings, then middle America sure wont be able to. She could have taken the huge pay increase and gone back with great success to UK X Factor with the show saying she was needed, instead she chose to play the victim card and is out of a job.
Blaming Simon for her own innability or to communicate clearly is more of her arrogance and stupidity.

  25. guilty pleasures says:

Holy smokes, I don’t know how much of this is true, but I would give my right arm to roll with these punches! If she had half a brain she’d still be making huge bank to sit on her duff and judge other people.
Tough gig, just ask a whopping percentage of people who have lost their jobs in this economy and not been offered bazillion dollar other options.
My heart certainly does not bleed for her.

  26. anne_000 says:

do we even know her here in america? so she’s acting like a brat when she’s offered a million$$$ job in place of the other one? oh no. how horrible. cuz we all know how easy it is to get a million$$$ job especially when one’s just the flavor of the day. from now to 10 yrs from now, there’ll be 1000s of girls who will have taken her place in the spotlight.

she should just grow up & take the million$$$ job. she’s not getting any younger and that’s her money-maker – youth.

  27. bluhare says:

Whether Cheryl Cole deserved it or not, she got royally screwed on this deal. The British press were all over her being a judge over here, and there were all these breathless articles during the interminable amount of time it took Simon to get her on.

OK, all that being said: MAN UP CHERYL!!! Being fired after four days says more about them than her. As an unknown in the US, it takes time for people to get to know and like someone and she never got that opportunity. So get the hell out of your apartment and get photographed going out looking good.

  28. munchies says:

as to what i read, she was fired because of her lousy judging job and awful comments during the first tapings of American version. Simon wanted her bad to this show but when shes already on the panel, she lost her shine. the execs including simon found her boring, no chemistry and probably found her unfit to the american show. they actually paid her in full and told her to go because well — shes not that good as expected.

  29. sara says:

27 years old??? I’m shocked. She looks like 40.

  30. Mary Jane says:

It doesn’t matter if it’s the entertainment industry or some cubicle customer-service gig or a waiter job, if one is not doing the job satisfactorily, one should be fired… and how is that being “publicly humiliated?” I’ve been fired (and also gotten promotions) and yeah, it sucks but I got o’er it and I’m sure this gal will as well.
Also, if her agent is worth his salt, she will receive compensation e’en for being fired.

  31. DGO says:

Apparently, there’s some little short guy executive-type who said Cheryl was too chubby, her nose too big, and she wasn’t sexy enough, for the show. The British press have dubbed him “Rumpelstilstken”. 🙂 He wanted Cheryl to lose 20 lbs.

  32. Ja says:

I for one say she should get over herself. The fact is that she is talentless. She should have known better, she’s been around for a while. In fact, she should wake up, because her luck won’t last forever. Not taking the UK gig just shows that business-wise she’s not at all astute plus she’s immature in her judgment. All these talents won’t take her far, in my opinion.

  33. junk573r says:

@ Mary Jane: …heh? I’ve never seen anyone actually type an accent.

  34. painterspirit says:

She needs to sit down and go away. She’s just trying to play the sympathy card, well, she’s got tons of money, I don’t feel that bad for her. What do you when you’re fired–you get a new job!

  35. Kloops says:

She is not playing her cards well. Regardless of how she feels in private, now would have been the time to publicly take the high road and be gracious and professional. Her antics appear unprofessionable and insufferable.

  36. dubdub2000 says:

I’m sure Simon is feeling the heat from Idol + the Voice:
1-his massive ego must be gutted that without him AI hasn’t only continued but thrived, they’ve had the best audiences in 5 years this year! With NO simon a different judging concept: no contestant bashing
2-The Voice is for some reason also pulling in great numbers.
If his show doesnt do really well, not just average but really well he could become a has been real quick.
Nicole is well known in the US and has a reality fan base already well established from dwts and judging other shows like “the sing off”. Simon tested her last year as a guest judge on x factor uk when Cheryl was sick and she went over like gangbusters and Simon was making googly eyes at her -lol. so this is really a no brainer. i can’t stand Cheryl but she was played badly on this one, Simon hit her way below the belt, not cool. Then again it’s show business , these are shark infested waters so no real surprise there.

  37. gossip_ho says:

i don’t feel sympathy for this girl because she is delusional to think she can make it big in america. first and foremost, why the hell would she be a judge of US x-factor if no one knew about her? and she is not a real talent…yes, she is a celebrity but she can’t sing….Nicole S makes perfect sense as the judge not Cheryl “the Chav” Cole.

  38. Riri says:

    She shouldn’t be hurt.
Somebody tell her that no one knows who she is in America, and no one cares.

It seems like the threshold for being a TV host or an actress in England is very low.

You can be really really BORING and lacking charisma and have a great T.V. or film career in England.

I say this without any specific refrence to Cole.

I have no idea if she has charisma. I have no idea who she is.

  39. ghoulish_moose says:

    I can’t stand this girl.
She was just a talentless nobody in “Girls Aloud” who somehow managed to bag herself a footballer who subsequently cheated on her. Everyone felt sorry for her and she somehow became the nation’s sweetheart. She got rocketed right into the public eye after that, and she’s been playing the “woe is me” sympathy card ever since.

I hope she just quietly disappears now and everyone forgets about her and she has to resort to going on “I’m A Celebrity” and we can all have a good jollie at how low she’s sunk when she’s gagging on kangaroo testicles. Yay =D

  40. Elly says:

The PRESS named her ‘the nation’s sweetheart’, I actually don’t know anyone who particularly likes her, as most of the Brits have commented here. She’s not hated but she barely registers with most people. The media, especially the Mail decide who the public ‘supposedly’ like.

Dannii Minogue was much more popular with the viewers and yet the British UK producers have let her go and are offering Cheryl a place. I wouldn’t discount Cheryl from the line-up yet, all the stories are probably publicity for the show.

  41. Ell says:

    Lol….Ghoulish, hopefully you’re psychic.

  42. endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

    HA. HA:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr31Vhu01fc

This must be the cheapest drum loop ever….

  43. Bopa says:

I’m sure Fox and Cowell would have preferred they go with the “home sick” story but I’m sure by Cheryls response they knew that they couldn’t sugar coat it. I don’t even think the accent was the problem, it’s not like they didn’t know this when they hired her on. There’s something else going on and wouldn’t be surprised if Cole and Cowell were more than just friends.

  44. sammib says:

She is a talentless famewhore who appeals to the chav culture so prominent in the UK right now. She’s the sort of chick that woman who want to grow up to be page 3 girls think is cool. Yuk. She finally got something she deserved.

  45. Violet says:

The producers led her on a bit of a merry dance, but the bottom line is that Cheryl Cole isn’t helping matters by being a total idiot about the situation.

Simon offered her a better-paying job in the UK, with just as much visibility and prestige. If she’d quietly accepted that job, they could’ve simply said that she decided to stay in her home country for personal reasons and no one would’ve been the wiser.

Because she kicked up a fuss, she looks like a diva (which she is) and Simon feels like his input doesn’t carry as much weight as it should (which is also true, but not something he knew until now).

In short, she let her ego get out of hand and turned what could’ve been a win/win situation for everyone into a complete mess.

  46. Juliane says:

Cheryl Cole is a racist. She called the woman she punched in the face a Carribbean jigaboo and a black bitch. Charming. But I bet she’s laughing now she’s seen Chezza getting her karma.

  47. londonLady says:

We love our Chezza- she is literally one of our national treasures. I for one will not be watching X Factor USA.

  48. phaksi says:

I’ve never watched X factor(its not broadcast in South Africa) so I dont know much about her. Can she actually sing? If I had any musical talent I wouldnt like being judged by someone with no talent (like JLO)

  49. Shirin says:

    I miss cheryl!

  50. Tracee Mccormic says:

Ok that theme is nearly two years old, but I still like it!
