Fran Drescher: my husband came out as bisexual the last 7 years of our marriage

Fran Drescher has a new sitcom coming out on June 15 on TV Land called Happily Divorced. We’ll be treated to her nasal voice, ear-splitting gaffaws and terrible outfits soon enough. I find The Nanny mildly annoying when it’s dubbed on German television, but it’s a huge hit still and is syndicated around the world so I get why Fran is back on television. (She had another series in 2005 on The WB called Living with Fran, but that only last a year.) Fran produced the Nanny along with her then-husband, who was with her for 21 years starting as her high school sweetheart and came out as gay after they split up. I vaguely remember hearing this story before, but it’s still very interesting to hear Fran explain it as the plot for her new show. She’s now friends with her ex and he has a new boyfriend. They’re even producing this new show together.

Fran Drescher plays Fran, a Los Angeles florist whose world is turned upside down when her Realtor husband, Peter (John Michael Higgins), comes out of the closet – but can’t afford to move out! And the real Fran is bringing this story to life with Peter Marc Jacobson, her longtime collaborator and actual ex husband, who announced he was gay shortly after their marriage ended! Fran tells Star about one of Hollywood’s most unlikely partnerships.

So how realistic is this story?
Well, it’s inspired by my life, but Peter and I divorced for other reasons after The Nanny ended. Then, a year or two after that he came out as gay.

How did he break the news?
He said, “I want you to know that I have been dating men of late, and I don’t want you to be shocked if a story comes out.” I was already with somebody else for a couple of years, so it didn’t impact me in the same way that it does my character?

Have [you] ever gone to [your] ex husband for relationship advice, like your character does on the show?
Actually, I dated a guy for about a year who gave me that inspiration. We were becoming friends as a trio, so if I had problems Peter would be the one who helped me resolve it. Peter became a confidant to me because he knows me so well, so through this other person we actually got closer.

Is it really possible to be with a man and not know he’s gay?
Maybe the last third of the marriage Peter got in touch with his bisexuality, but we made the choice to stay in our relationship. So we lived together for several more years. But then I needed to find myself and had a very cliche midlife crisis!

[From Star Magazine, print edition, June 20, 2011]

The real story is at the end, where Fran says her husband came out as bisexual toward the last third of their marriage, which would have been about seven years and that they stayed together through that. Was he seeing men on the side and did she give her ok to that? I can’t imagine doing that and I doubt the show will address it at all. It will probably be Will and Grace with a twist, with some contrived situations with the new boyfriend and lame jokes about their sexless marriage.

They were on Oprah talking about it a few months back. But she also talked about how her and her best friend were violently raped and her husband was made to watch. Shocking!!!!!!!! I had never heard about it before.

  2. LOVE ANGELINA says:

OMG Dorothy, Fran was attacked and her husband had to watch. OMG thats terrible. I had never heard about that either. Thats just terrible.

I have like the worst insomnia so I watch The Nanny on Nick at night and I have always liked that show even when I was little. I like Fran too. I think she is hilarious and a nice person.

I have noticed that most men who claim to be bisexual always just end up being with a man in the end. Anyone else notice that? I hardly believe there is a such thing as a bisexual man.

  3. MarenGermany says:

what a sweet story. in retroperspective, though.

  4. Barker says:

@Dorothy – the rape incident is actually well known and it was Dan Ackroyd and his wife who took Fran and her husband in after that to live with them after the rape. I think they lived there for months before Fran was able to move out with her husband. Pretty horrible stuff. She’s come thru a lot in her life.

  5. OtherChris says:

She’s one of those celebrities who’s easy to like and always had been. Good luck to her.

  6. Fuzzy Cat says:

Brave lady – and seems fran and her ex like they have a mature relationship.

  7. Dorothy#1 says:

    I know @ LOVE ANGELINA!!!

Sorry Barker, Oprah was the first I had heard of it. Yay for Dan and his wife!

  8. Sumodo1 says:

Fran Drescher is a national treasure. I actually know all the words to the theme song for “The Nanny” and perform it at parties. I Love Fran!

  9. Abby says:

I love her and she looks great. I know her voice is annoying, but I just might watch this show.

  10. MJ says:

I remember seeing her on a daytime TV show a couple of years ago, and she claims her great complexion is due to always sleeping on her back. I have to admit, I’ve been sleeping that way ever since. Her skin really is amazing for any age.

  11. Isabel says:

Oh my word. sounds like she’s been to hell and back! I hope she finds success with this new show, even if I won’t be watching it!

  12. Ari says:

I can actually see why a gay man would marry her since she is so fabulous 🙂 but yeah I would watch this show. Love her to pieces and totally love that movie “Beautician and the beast” GUILTY PLEASURE MOVIE! Sad to read about her being raped though I had no idea :L

  13. Novaraen says:

LOL@ the photo caption….towards the end of the description for the bottom photo it says “Holy Botox”. Tiny font but I caught it….;-) She is pretty botoxy looking.

  14. Mindrew says:

I adore Fran. She’s been through so much and yet she’s kept her strength, her sense of humor and (most) of her sanity intact. I’ve heard the rape story before. I’m not sure, but I think she spoke about it in her book “Enter Whining” – which is a really fun read if you can get your hands on it. I really hope that this new show does for her what Hot in Cleveland is doing for Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick (let’s face it – Betty White REALLY doesn’t need the show – the show needs HER).

  15. Leigh says:

Not only did she survive and come through that horrid attack, but survived cancer several years back. Fran’s a fighter. Love her.

  16. Gwen says:

    I love her.

  17. Dizzybenny says:

Am I the only one who read the parts she was talking with HER voice inside the head. lol 🙂
    Loved her in Spinal Tap.

  18. xxodettexx says:

@Love Angelina: actually i am currently dating, and have dated in the past, a bisexual man… he was basically raised as a hippy and told to love his body and to experiment to find what he loved the most… as he tells me, he just couldnt get past the man’s facial features enough to be fully gay and he especially loved having sex with women…

it may be hard for you to understand but they do exist! [some of the hottest and most open men i have dated!] i also dated a very macho men, big muscular manly man, that ended up being gay years later after being “straight” most of his life through his mid 20s.. the human body with all of its hormones and its unique physiology is an interesting thing!

anyway, as for fran, hated her voice but she is by most accounts [from interviews and rumors over the years] such a lovely wonderful survivor of a woman… i do hope they dont cheapen the relationship between the two characters on her show bc there is so much interesting stuff that could be covered respectfully…

  19. ZenB says:

Doesn’t it say that she was already seeing someone else when Peter came out? The marriage seems like it was over in fact if not in name.

As for gay or bisexual; I personally would not date a bisexual man if they exist but that is my personal choice. Regardless, they seem to be using the terms “bisexual” and “gay” interchangeably in this piece. Which is annoying me more than Fran’s voice.

  20. Judy says:

She had the cutest figure ever on The Nanny…and I had a very similar one 20 years ago. She looks good, and I admire her in a lot of ways, knowing what she’s been through. I don’t like the way she always talks about sex…why don’t people keep some things private. She revulsed me on Bonnie Hunt. Hafta say, her ex-husband is TO DIE FOR…OMG, he’s HOT!!!!

  21. ol cranky says:

@xxodettexx – if you live in Canada, I think I dated your bf. . .

  22. Judy says:

Think I made up a word when I said “revulsed” me above…revulsion is a word but revulsed is not. Should have said repulsed.

  23. Maritza says:

I love her, nasal voice and all. I’m looking forward to be watching her new show

  24. Kim says:

Im sorry but there is no way she didnt know he was gay. You can not live with someone for years and not know or have major suspiscions. People who claim they didnt know were ignoring the signs. And once and for all can we all agree there is no such thing as bisexuality for goodness sakes. Be honest people.

  25. poodlemom says:

I love Fran…and I feel so much sympathy for her and her situation! I hope she has a good man in her life now…can you find out if this is true???

  26. Nah, nah, and nah... says:

    Like her.

But, did anybody else think Mr. Sheffield’s character was undercover-kinda-gay and bearding up with Nanny Fine? I did. They were too…emotional together. Was sad to see the show go, but they jumped the shark when he married her. And then the whole twins storyline? Yeah. Right.

Will watch the new joint and wish them both well.

  27. Emily says:

@Kim, so what would you call someone who has sex with people of either gender? I suppose you think they’re confused, or just drunk, right? You might find it hard to believe, but some people can be attracted to both men and women. Ever heard of the Kinsey scale?

  28. Playdate says:

of course bisexuality exists. It is ridiculous to say otherwise! Just look on the internet.

it has always been – see the Kinsey scale. It does not necessarily mean 50-50 attraction.

It is confusing when I guy like Peter says he is gay when also admits to having an active sex life with his wife of decades (if they are telling the truth). Sounds like he is Bi- but in this society, it is easier to just say Gay. Bisexuals are the silent majority of the population – if you count all with some same sex attraction. Female bisexuality is accepted much more – look at Lindsay Lohan, she is allowed to have relationships with a woman (a full on lesbian) , but a man? no way – he is on the down low, lying to himself, etc. Honestly , I think Peter M Jacobson needs to come really clean – acknowledging bisexuality or perhaps homosexual behavior during the marriage. He is doing a disserrvice to bisexuals.

  29. Abby says:

ZenB – I think they were already divorced (in real life) when her ex husband came out.
