‘Bridget Jones 3’ inches even closer to happening, inevitable disaster

As far as romantic comedies go, Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) is one of my very favorites of the genre. However, I’m one of those movie fans who also like to pretend that Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) never happened at all. In comparison to the exhilaration of the lovable heroine (perfectly embodied by Renee Zellweger) from the first movie, the sequel was a complete letdown to watch her transformed into a buffoon pursuing the ever-conditional marriage proposal from Mark Darcy. Quite simply, the second movie sought to replicate several key scenes from the first one (including that glorious street fight between Hugh Grant’s Daniel Cleaver and Colin Firth’s Darcy) but merely turned into a parody of the first movie. Honestly, I could go on for days about that injustice; but instead, I’ll just complain about an even worse and very likely prospect.

For the past few years, we’ve heard lots of buzzing about a potential third installment to the Bridget Jones franchise. At first, these rumors were easily dismissed, since the second movie disappointed so many Bridget fans; but now, this nightmare could indeed come to fruition, for there’s a script and a director with cred who is “beyond keen” to work on the project:

The film-maker behind the summer’s surprise success, Bridesmaids, is in the early stages of discussions about getting Bridget Jones back into her outsized pants for a third instalment of the film comedy starring Renee Zellweger.

Paul Feig, who told me he’s “beyond keen” to make a movie in London, is in the middle of very complex negotiations about making Bridget 3.

The status of the film at the moment is purely rumour because no deals involving Feig — or the film’s stars Renee, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant — have been sorted out.

An executive in Los Angeles, who is close to one of the film’s participants, told me that negotiations have been fragile because Feig and the cast have other projects; and then there are the usual problems of schedules and money.

I was told that the film-maker, the actors and the studios (Working Title and Focus) are close to agreement on important matters relating to the film, but not close enough for anyone to sign on a dotted line.

Helen Fielding, who created the Bridget Jones’s Diary column in a national newspaper, has written a script for Bridget Jones 3 that features her heroine hoping to become pregnant. But which bloke will be the daddy? Love-rat Daniel Cleaver, played by Grant, or Mark Darcy, the man who loves her just the way she is, played by Firth.

Oscar-winner Firth has indicated that if the script makes sense he’d been interested in reprising his role. Feig is just the man to bring them all together. He knows how to direct comedy and he knows how to be funny.

[From Daily Mail]

Why? Nobody (except perhaps the film studio) wants this third movie to happen at all. Wait, I take that back, for Renee Zellweger may be interested in reprising her role because she doesn’t have much going on professionally at the moment. Yet I honestly can’t see her wanting to gain weight (she’s so fit these days) to play Bridget once again. While they might be able to talk Hugh into coming back as well, Colin Firth is another story altogether. With his newly minted Oscar, Colin’s being pursued by any number of studios for other movies; so if anyone he can put the brakes on this impending disaster, it would be him. Colin Firth, you’re our only hope.

She looks nothing like her old self I don’t see how this will happen lol

SPEAKING OF WHICH – I just watched Bad Teacher and omg Diaz’ face looks like MELTED BUTTER even moving… its horrible and horrifying. Her body is sick though.

  2. gillociraptor says:

    Oh, please, no.

  3. mia girl says:

@bedhead – I believe @Kaiser posted a story a few months back about Zellweger and B Jones 3. RZ said she wouldnt gain weight for the role but would wear a fat suit instead.

And FFS please dont make this movie!

  4. UKHels says:

no no NO!! they were all too old to be acting like 20 year olds in the last one, don’t think I could cope with another

  5. honeychurch says:

I think Hugh’s a bit too busy with saving the UK to worry about a Bridget movie. Just a hunch.

  6. Jaded says:

    Colin Firth = Oscar winner.
Hugh Grant = aging badly, has totally lost his mojo.
Renee Zellweger = painfully thin, overly exercised, face stretched taut and abraded beyond recognition.
Bridget Jones 3 = total disaster.

  7. crumbcake says:

Please, Colin–save us from BJD Part 3. I loved, loved, LOVED the original (one of my all time favorite movies), but the second one blew chunks so bad that I also tried to wipe it from my memory. If there was a pill or a shot a doctor could give me to erase my memory of the Edge of Reason, I swear I would do it. Just say “no”, Colin, please!!!!

  8. lrm says:

I’m sorry, but compared to the huge heap of cr*p movies out there these days….I will probably see and enjoy this one.
Honestly it’s gotten that bad-that BJ 3 will be a semi-welcome relief. [Then again, i hated inception and thought it was an overrated ridiculous farce with really bad acting all around….And I won’t see Black Swan b/c of the tendency for critics to wax poetic on any kind of drama-tot he point of ridiculous praise for ‘just a movie’….]

So, yea, I will see it-If for nothing else, then for the fact that all 3 of them can deliver the h*ll out of a decent or funny line, when they want to….

um, wait, i did not read the article yet. so am assuming they will all be in it….

  9. Kristin says:

Plot: Bridget’s diary is hacked by News of the World, and once again Hugh Grant comes to the rescue!

  10. richie says:

    Huge Grant looks old!!!!!!!!

  11. Hmmmmm says:

The first one was great the second was horrible. They made her too fat and obnoxious. If they want to do a third, keep the know it all out of the planning room and take it back to what made the original great.

  12. Gwen says:

    Oh please NO!

  13. Lol says:

mia is right i remember that too.

  14. fabgrrl says:

It might be nice to see Renee Zellweger looking plump and well-fed. But then again, we would have to endure months and months of “How I Lost All That Weight” afterwards.

  15. machiavelli says:

    Ummm…I wouldn’t mind. I will take Mark Darcy any day….Dont judge me…:)

  16. lola says:

Am I seriously the only one on the planet who hated Bridesmaids? i thought it was cruel and depressing, not funny.

  17. the original bellaluna says:

Umm, no. Yeah, RZ said the only way she’d do a 3rd was if she could wear a fat-suit. She doesn’t want to gain an ounce, let alone the 20 or so pounds she’d need to play BJ again.

  18. Nanea says:

Hugh is probably free to do the movie now, as he was successful in sinking ol’Rupe’s empire earlier today, together with that valiant newspaper that never gave up, The Guardian.

Now, if they only found someone as courageous willing to do the same to Faux News…

  19. inthekitchen says:

@lrm, definitely save your money on Black Swan. I just saw it and thought it was awful. Totally predictable, overacted, overrated.

I lurved the first one but I don’t know if I could stand a part 3, especially if RZ dons a fatsuit. And why does she alway stand like that (first picture)? She looks so bizarre.

Also, if she is married to Marc Darcy is she then cheating on him with Cleaver? That doesn’t really make her very heroic. And who would choose him anyway when they have P&P’s Fitzwilliam Darcy on hand. *swoon*

@Nanea, I just read that the DOJ might go after ol’ Rupe…so that would shut down Faux News! Fingers crossed.

  20. sarahk says:

what the hell would they even base it on? The second one, terrible as it was, was at least loosely based on the 2nd book. Oh Christ no.

  21. SEF says:

Kristin – I love your plot idea!

Zellweger was so obnoxious about gaining/losing weight the first two times – honestly, she looked better with a little meat on her – there’s no way I see her doing it again.

Besides, the books made Bridget so witty and the movies made her such a dimwit . . . please spare us!

  22. Nancy says:

I absolutely loved the first one the second one was so cringe worthy I also like to pretend it never happened anyways if they do make a third movie I hope it is way better than the second one.

  23. fizXgirl314 says:

lol, the title kind of sounds like it’s 3 inches away from happening… which is not a complimentary reference for anyone I’m sure.

Is she going to have to eat and stuff like that for the movie? She’s gonna hate that!

  24. Esmom says:

The thing that kills me is that she didn’t need to gain weight for the role — Bridget wasn’t fat, she just had an unhealthy preoccupation with her weight. And I agree that RZ dumbed her down. A third installment would be beyond ridiculous!

  25. TG says:

@Kristin – Love your comment and that angle just might work for a movie. I too loved, loved, loved the first movie and the second one I wouldn’t have minded if only Renee didn’t look so fat and unattractive. Love both books though.

  26. Amanda G says:

The first one was fantastic, but the 2nd one made Bridget even more ridiculous than she needed to be. I can’t imagine how badly they’d ruin a 3rd one.

  27. truthSF says:

After viewing the first Bridget movie, I fell head over heels in love with it and Mark Darcy AKA Colin Firth. And then they tried to ruin my obsession by making that dreadful sequel which thankfully didn’t put a dent in my love for Colin… and now they’re trying to threepeat this movie into disasterville? I hope this movie is cursed to never pass the rumored stage.

  28. kim says:

Is it weird that I think she’s the most attractive when she’s at her bridget jones weight?

  29. heb says:

GOd Colin Firth is so beautiful.

  30. bugsy says:

Please don’t be true. Why can’t hollywood come up with anything original anymore?!?!

  31. jane16 says:

    Well said Bedhead!

  32. Carolyn says:

you’re right on the money Bedhead. No-one wants to see Bridget made a fool of again on screen. I’d forgotten Firth was in this…yes he’s too high-calibre for this now.

  33. Jana says:

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. I loved loved loved the book. Thought it was a bad decision for Renee to do it. I was wrong. She was amazing. She was Bridget. Hugh at his best. Loved Colin. The movie captured the essence of the book beautifully. I don’t really remember the second one, so it must have been average. Doing a third one is just bastardizing it to make easy money.

  34. LucyOriginal says:

As far as I remember, the second movie followed the book. I guess the edition was not that great, but many people who actually read the book enjoyed it and most people that I know who did not read it disliked the edge of reason.

  35. Anti-icon says:

Helen Fielding, the Bridget Jones author, is brilliant. Renee does a good job of portraying the character — but I’m afraid I have to agree with Kaiser — I frequently do — about the second film……it didn’t hold up to the first. I’m afraid what an aging Bridgett/Renee might bring.

  36. Kim says:

I thought Bridget Jones 2 was very close to being as good as first one which is rare to find a sequel as good as the first movie. I think the third would be maybe not as good but still v good. Renee’s best role to date for sure is Bridget Jones.

  37. Kim says:

Please yes. Ill be first in line to see it! Great franchise.

  38. Ron says:

How has everyone on this board forgotten that Renee is an Oscar winner as well. If Colin, get’s “Oscar Winner” mentioned everywhere, why doesn’t she? And don’t go down that “she didn’t deserve it” road either. She is just as talented.

  39. Emily says:

Helen Fielding kept writing Bridget columns after the second book, and in them Bridget was pregnant, so it sounds like this film could be following those.

@LucyOriginal, Edge of Reason didn’t follow the book as closely as the first movie did. Daniel Cleaver was only in it for like 5 minutes, they basically extended his part just so they could have more Hugh Grant in the film.

  40. Ryan says:

I WANT this to happen!! This has the potential to be good and I want to see this work! The studio is not the only one wanting to make this movie – I want this so bad, too!!!! DO IT!!

  41. HME says:

You know what is such a shame? The second book was really good. Dare I say even better than the first book? I certainly laughed out loud more reading the second book than I did the first (the Colin Firth interview is just BRILLIANT). If they’d just followed the damn book the second movie would have been great too. But no, they wanted more Hugh Grant so they shoe horned his character in where he didn’t belong, changed the wedding from Jude’s to Bridget’s parents (WHY??) and changed Rebecca into a lesbian – in the book (spoiler alert!) she WAS trying to steal Mark from Bridget. *sigh* So yeah I’ve no doubt that a third movie would be a complete disaster.

  42. eternalcanadian says:

No, no, no. I don’t want Bridget Jones 3! I could barely watch Bridget Jones 2! And really what could they do now to make it better? Oh I hope this is just a rumour and won’t become reality!

  43. Jana says:

@HME, there was a second book? Wow. I never knew. What’s its title? I adored the first book.

  44. Ally says:

With the last one, I thought: this movie would be awesome if it was just about Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant).

Bridget herself was dumb, boring, uneven and redundant. I hope the sequel doesn’t happen, or it’ll be right down there with SATC 2.

  45. HME says:

@ Jana – The second book is called Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Its definitely worth a read, so much better than the movie.

  46. Emily says:

@HME, ITA, I loved the second book. My favourite part was the Christmas cards, I was so disappointed she didn’t write any in the film!

  47. Roberta, Firth Lady of Wadley says:

BJ is an alcoholic. Her baby will be at risk for fetal alcohol syndrome, & other birth defects, also from her chain-smoking. There is nothing funny, re: irresposible, reckless behavior, & substance abuse, displayed by a pregnant woman. She is also a target for various STD’s, due to multiple partners. There’s a thought: have her inform DC & MD that they need to be tested for herpes & gonorrhea. In the closing scenes, show that DC & MD neither one wants BJ. Then, they make eye contact, & realize they are attracted to one another. They exit, arm-in-arm. Fade to black.

  48. Ann says:

Oh you silly old queen, you!

  49. Gillian says:

If Colin firth is happy with the script and takes it fine, but he has went on to international stardom, and he himself can’t offord to risk a bad film after the success of 2 baftas and an Oscar, I will keep and open mind and wait and see what he does,

will he or won’t he watch this space

  50. maya says:

I dont get why everyone is saying colin firth is too high calibre for this now because he won an oscar, renee is also an oscar winner – granted she doesnt do much now, but she was highly sought after once chicago wrapped and it didnt stop her jumping in for bridget 2. I love colin firth but all I can say is Mamma Mia people – really?

  51. s says:

Am I alone in thinking the movies were sad and ridiculous compared to the books? Oh, I watched them, and they gave me a giggle, but like a previous poster said, they made Bridget overweight and dimwitted when she was supposed to be overly preoccupied with her weight (which usually hovered under 130 lbs if I remember correctly) and slightly ditzy. I adore Colin Firth but his Mark Darcy has a ginormous stick up his bum, amazingly making Cleaver more likeable. The second movie left out most of the truly funny stuff (I still will read the Christmas letter chapter on its own) and was an even worse let-down.

Screw the third movie – just give us a third book.

  52. Stephie says:

I loved the first one, hated the second one, but would definitely see a number three for Mark Darcy. Bring it!

  53. Lisa says:

As bad as it could be, I’ll take another Bridget movie over some of the other tripe that its made these days. I think they should bring Sharon Maguire back to direct this one!
