Gavin DeGraw got his ass kicked & got hit by a taxi (update)

This is a weird story. Gavin DeGraw, the singer best knows for such hits as ????? got his ass handed to him early Monday morning. The basic story is that Gavin was drinking with friends in the Lower East Side on NYC. Gavin left alone (presumably) and he was attacked by a gang of thugs sometime around 4:30 a.m. After the thugs beat him up, breaking his nose and cutting up his face but not robbing him, Gavin then tried to walk it off, I guess, and he wandered into the street where he was clipped by a taxi. What in the world?

Pop singer Gavin DeGraw was viciously beaten by a pack of thugs on the Lower East Side early today — and then hit by a taxi as he stumbled off, police sources said.

The 34-year-old crooner — who’s spent the summer opening for superstar rockers Maroon 5 and Train — had been drinking and just left a group of pals when he was attacked by the marauding perps sometime between 3:50 and 4:20 a.m. at 6th Street and 1st Avenue, the sources said.

He had his nose broken and suffered cuts on his face, they said.

The creeps then fled, and the dazed singer, whose hit song “Chariot” went platinum, kept walking, sources said.

He wound up at 19th Street and 1st Avenue, where he was struck by a cab, although not seriously, they said.

He remained in Bellevue Hospital tonight.

The sources said the attack did not appear to be a robbery.

DeGraw, who hails from upstate South Fallsburg, has a Manhattan pad. He and his brother also own a bar, the National Underground, on East Houston Street.

[From The NY Post]

My guess is that the subtext of the “walking it off” part of the story is that Gavin was either not badly injured at first, or he didn’t realize how badly he was hurt, or that he was just in shock. Or he was just too drunk and numb to really “get” what happened. But he didn’t have a cell phone to call 911? It’s all so weird.

People Mag has more details – Gavin was definitely alone when he was assaulted, and the police came when “someone” called 911 saying that “there was a man with blood on his shirt who appeared to be heavily intoxicated”. Gavin’s rep says: “Gavin DeGraw was assaulted … and was taken to the emergency room at Bellevue Hospital by ambulance. He is currently under observation. We have no additional information at this time.” Poor Gavin.

UPDATE: Even People Mag thinks there’s something fishy about the story – People just released a new article about Gavin’s beatdown, and their police sources claim that Gavin was able to get ONE MILE from the scene of his beatdown to the place where the taxi hit him:

It was sometime around 4:00 a.m. Monday that Gavin DeGraw was walking through New York’s East Village when “some kind of argument” broke out between him and a group of men he didn’t know, according to a police source.

The words escalated to violence and soon the “I Don’t Want to Be” singer was under attack by what New York newspapers are describing as a gang of thugs.

The dazed and badly injured DeGraw then somehow ended up about a mile away, only to be clipped by a taxi.

Someone called 911 and DeGraw was rushed by ambulance to Bellevue Hospital’s emergency room where he was treated for a broken nose, concussion and facial lacerations. He’s now in stable condition and under observation.

More than a day later, a number or questions remain about the attack, including the identity of the assailants, a motive for the violence, what DeGraw was doing on the streets early in the morning and how he was able get so far before the taxi incident.

His reps have only released two brief statements, one of them ending with: “We have no additional details at this time.”

According to police sources, DeGraw’s recollections are clouded by his head injuries and the possibility he was intoxicated at the time. Police are hoping to find witnesses and security camera footage to fill in the gaps.

What is known is that DeGraw, who has a new album coming out next month and who has been touring with Train and Maroon 5, was apparently out alone at the time of the assault on the corner of 6th Street and 1st Avenue. Why he was there at that hour remains under investigation, but DeGraw is a New York City resident and the attack site was close to a club he co-owns with his brother called the National Underground, where he was spotted Sunday night.

DeGraw told police that he encountered at least three individuals; various news reports say they were all men. A police source tells PEOPLE the “assailants were unknown to victim” and that DeGraw “can’t clearly recall” what they argued about.

After the assault, DeGraw then was next seen at 19th Street and 1st Avenue, 13 blocks away. Police sources say a 911 caller reported a man with a bloody shirt who appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

By Tuesday morning, his reps issued an updated statement: “Gavin DeGraw is currently recovering and in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital where he was taken … by ambulance after he was attacked by a group of assailants. He suffers from a concussion, broken nose, black eyes, cuts and bruises. The police are conducting an investigation of the attack.

“Gavin and his family appreciate everyone’s concern at this time. We have no information yet regarding his upcoming concert dates and promotion for his new album.”

[From People]

He doesn’t remember anything? Cough-drugs-cough? Actually, when I used to get really hammered, I would get into verbal disagreements with anybody and everybody, and I could never remember exactly what went down either. Maybe Gavin was just blackout drunk. I’m surprised Levi Johnston didn’t have sex with him.

Maybe the beating was due to his stupid hat choices.

This was all over the news this AM but the mister & I were unable to figure out who this dude is. Even when they played the song clip that we were supposed to know.

  9. JaneWonderfalls says:

He is known for I Don’t Wanna Be and Charriot, he actually has a great soulful voice and I’m sure the reason for him not being as successful as some pop stars is because he actually has talent and substance in his music…with that being said while “smh” at the known for ????

  10. Obvious says:

    I don’t wanna be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gFCW3PHBws

I do like him, he’s not big and it’s part of his charm. I think he dated Ashlee Simpson once too.

  11. Mari says:

    Concure with @lilred

As my dad would say, “Nothing good happens after midnight…” to which I reply, “Maybe not, but it sure makes for some interesting stories.”

  12. JaisyMaisy says:

    This should have been Nickleback.

  13. rtms says:

After looking him up on Google, I realized his one song that I know, ‘Im in love with a Girl’ was played big time about 2 yrs ago. For some reason though I get the feeling he may be gay which is why the attack occurred?

  14. Delta Juliet says:

Sounds like a trip to rehab will be announced soon.

  15. Sar says:

Does anyone remember the really depressing rumor about him and Britney Spears where she had to be rescued from his hotel room by her team?

  16. Shaniqua Nunyadambidness says:

So…Gavin Degraw…kinda looks like a love child of Dane Cook, Skeet Ulrich and Doug Hutchinson. Just sayin.

  17. Listerino says:

He looks weird. Like some kind of alien cross bred with a human. There’s just something weird about his face..

  18. phlyfiremama says:

“under observation” rather than “being treated”? Hmmmm

  19. hindulovegod says:

This story is beyond fishy. The LES is not a shady, dangerous neighborhood by any means. And it’s Manhattan–4 a.m. here is nothing. It feels like 9:30 p.m. would in most other places. Subways are packed, people are out and about, places are open. Random violence is low in such circumstances. There are too many people, too many lights.

  20. Susan O. says:

Heal quick Gavin! This scary crap is becoming all too common.

  21. Onyx XV says:

@ Shaniqua (#16): Good description! I was trying to put my finger on it…

Don’t think I’m familiar with his music, but that sounds like a very sucky night. Hope things get better for him.

  22. Chelsey says:

Why is everyone being so rude about this? First with the ??? what is he known for when it’s IN the article, then a hat comment, then someone starting a gay rumor (seriously?), him being mouthy?…

C’mon, this guy just got beat up and THEN hit by a cab…have a little sympathy. Who cares if he was drunk or not, it’s still a really scary situation that NO ONE would want to be in or have anyone they know be in. I hope he gets better soon.

  23. Coco says:

@pyewacket…that was some funny shit!! Good observation!!

  24. Molokoultra says:

you need to watch you ass when you’re out hammered in the city. either that or keep your mouth shut. I’ve been wasted hundreds of times all over NYC & never had a problem… sounds like he was shithoused

  25. Shaniqua Nunyadambidness says:

I’m sorry, Chelsey. We’re not entirely soulless. Many of us simply prefer sarcastic wit over sympathy.

  26. fizXgirl314 says:

I find this posting insensitive and crude. I mean, why post an article about someone you don’t really know or care to find out about just to make light of some tragedy that they endured? sad…

  27. irishserra says:

Awww…Poor Gavin… I love his music and he seems like such a down-to-earth goofy guy.

  28. Zeromia says:

I love Gavin and he’s had some great songs. He’s an incredibly sweet man..whatever the case is, he doesn’t deserve what happened to him and I’m happy that it wasn’t worse.

watch this youtube video and you’ll see he loves his fans and he’s a sweet guy. Get well soon Gavin..

  29. Catlady says:

Maybe he can’t remember because he has a concussion you fucking idiot. Do you have a clue about head injuries? Loss of memory is a hallmark of one. Head injuries can be devastating. I know. I suffered one last December and have struggled with loss of vision, memory loss, depression, anxiety, and emotional outbursts ever since. I’ve also lost my filters and will say and do things that piss people of without meaning to/realizing it. You don’t have control over any of this stuff and it is scary, frustrating and depressing. All you can do is hope it goes away with time. Sometimes it doesn’t.

  30. Mia says:

CREEPY BOY – he makes me feel dirty, and in case I was able to shrug this feeling off, there’s this article to back it up.

  31. Carolina says:

Just to clarify, Ryan Cabrera was the one who dated Ashlee Simpson and Howie Day was the one in the Britney rumors.

  32. Ben says:

Ya know, he wouldn’t even have to be black-out drunk. He could have been drunk but coherent, just getting sloppy. Cold and pain just don’t register sometimes.

Whatever, who *cares* how drunk he was? Even if he was being a douche, nobody had any business hurting anybody else. This is the same kind of unnecessary circumstantial stuff trials get mired in. Being in an altered state makes you no less of a victim. Physical violence is nobody’s responsibilty but the person who did it.

  33. buckley says:

He does have a punchable face…

  34. crtb says:

Gavin DeGraw didn’t get his ass kicked. He was beated & attacked by a gang of thugs. I find no humor in him being assaulted then hit by a car.

  35. jamie says:

I’ve actually met him and his family. They are the nicest and most down to earth people on this planet. But of course whatever idiot wrote this article is just going to throw drugs into the mix to sensationalize things. Who hasn’t gotten too drunk? Because he’s famous you’re gunna hate on him for it? God, he got drunk and he was mugged. Leave the man alone.

  36. jamie says:

Whether he was a little drunk or a lot drunk he was mugged by some jerks and he got hit by a car. Its not a laughing matter. If it happened to you or someone in your family you wouldn’t be poking fun.

  37. newyorker says:

13 blocks is not 1 mile; it’s about .65 miles – a routine walk for any new yorker. it would take under under 10 minutes to walk that distance. someone disoriented from a beating, alcohol, or both could easily have walked that distance. bars in nyc close at 4am, so the fact he was attacked at 4:30 is not at all mysterious. and he wouldn’t have been the only person walking in that neighborhood at that time. people in new york actually walk, like, every day and everywhere.

  38. ZenB!tch says:

@rtms I’ve been wondering if this was a random gay bash since I heard this story.

I don’t know anything about this guy, I’ve never even seen him before now but it just sounded like gay bashing because a bunch of thugs beating up one guy usually is. I was wondering if they literally threw him to the curb too. I guess not. Regardless, this is tragic yet unfortunately odd enough to be intriguing. My curiosity is piqued.

  39. alliwmcer says:

I met him once, and he seems like a bit of a scum bag. I have a feeling he ran his mouth a little too much when he was drunk and got into a fight. As for being gay, I’m pretty sure he’s not. When I met him he was hitting on everything that walked.

  40. Iggles says:

    @ new yorker:

Very true! It’s what we do! Represent 😀

That said, the theory it was a gay bashing seems plausible since no money was stolen. Usually someone gets attacked for a reason. Another possibility was he may have bumped into one of the guys (because he’s was drunk & clumsy) and they took offense (not condoning it, but I could see stupid people who get violent at the drop of the hat overreacting at feeling “disrespected”).

Or they thought he was gay and bashed him for that.

It clearly wasn’t a robbery so I think it’s one of the two.

  41. lrm says:

    people are fuckin* animals….
why do humans need to beat each other up?
    I’m sorry, i’m sure that sounds naive…
but some days, it just gets to me.
I know, he may have provoked, but whenever I read about injuries sustained after attackes, whether provoked or not, it just nauseates me….and when it’s a group on one person, i’m further sickened.
the idea of viciously hurting another person -on purpose- is surreal to me.

Yea, yea, i know, drugs and alcohol do weird things to the mind….anyway-
whatever happened, hope he gets well soon….though i dont know him or his music(:

  42. Amy says:

@Shaniqua Nunyadambidness: I’m also seeing a bit of Jack White in the mix, too…at least in that first photo.

  43. Sair says:

It was Howie Day & Britney Spears…not Gavin. Thanks for clearing that up. Sucks that this happened to him no matter what he was doing. I’m sure we’ve all had a few too many and safely made it home.
