Marc Anthony speaks out on his divorce, it wasn’t “sensationalistic”

Marc Anthony has a new interview that will air on ABC’s Nightline tonight in which he discusses his divorce with Jennifer Lopez. He claims he’s doing it to set the record straight, probably after the cheating rumors and all the tabloids that J.Lo strategically told her side of the story to. Good Morning America had a preview of the interview this morning, and they focus on Anthony saying the split wasn’t “sensationalistic.” Even though I (sort-of) write for a living, I wasn’t sure that “sensationalistic” was an actual word, but it is, it just sounds like it’s made up.

Anthony denies having affairs, particularly with that flight attendant that was mentioned in Lopez’s US Weekly cover story, but he does it in a roundabout way that makes me scrunch up my face and go “hmmm.” He does say “no, absolutely not” about infidelity but he also spends a lot of time going on about how there were a ton of other fake rumors about him and then he complains about the gossip industry.

On the end of his marriage
I’ll tell you it wasn’t some sensationalistic happening.

Interviewer: infidelity?
No, absolutely not. Nothing sensationalistic…

It was a realization on both our parts, so. It wasn’t shocking. These things happen. These things happen.

Interviewer: There was a flight attendant?
There was a flight attendant. There was a pilot I heard. There was this guy sitting next to me in a rehab in Houston. I’ve heard it all.

Celebrity watching and speculation is almost like a sport.

On if he wants this divorce.
It’s a decision that we made jointly, and that’s how I’ll answer that.

Then the interview goes on to promote Marc Anthony’s new album of Spanish love songs, his clothing line with Kohl’s and his talent reality competition with J.Lo.

If celebrity watching and speculation is a sport*, then Anthony’s estranged wife is one of the most enthusiastic and hard working players. She puts this stuff out there for consumption, and she’s pushing her side of the story. Marc was kind of unconvincing with his side. He seemed so lackluster in that interview.

US Weekly has a big article in the print edition about the “alleged” cheating between Marc and Jada Pinkett Smith on set. They suggest that there was at least an inappropriately close friendship between them along with some suspicious behavior. What’s more is that Jada supposedly tried to help broker Jennifer and Marc’s split! It doesn’t make sense that she would have done that if she was sleeping with Marc as it would have involved some massive chutzpah. Here’s more from US:

Lopez may have picked up on what another insider considers an “inappropriately close” off-camera relationship. “They were a little too touching and like they were in their own little world,” says a set source, who recalls that Anthony once fed her a piece of cake with his fingers – and the pair often hung out alone in his trailer. The insider says they just got friendly quickly: “They talked and texted all the time…

“The more distant Marc and Jennifer became, the closer he got to Jada,” reveals the insider. The family friend says Pinkett Smith actually attempted to help mediate the acrimonious split – and her efforts backfired. “Jennifer didn’t like that,” says the pal. “Jada overstepped her bounds a bit and Will chastised her for getting too involved.” She may have been meddling, but the family insider insists Anthony and Pinkett Smith’s friendship never crossed the line to a full-blown affair. “Marc may be attracted to her, but Jada isn’t – period… she’s not jacking up her life for Marc Anthony…

[Jada and Will’s] kids and their marriage are too important to them. They will fight tooth and nail to preserve that.”

[From US Weekly, print edition, September 12, 2011]

It sounds like Jada and Marc at least had an emotional affair. That’s funny how Marc sort-of denied having an affair with a stewardess but never mentioned anything on this huge story of an affair with Jada. At least he didn’t talk about it in the preview of the interview that was aired this morning.

*On the “celebrity watching as a sport” angle – whenever a guy tries to tell me that celebrity gossip is frivolous I just ask them if they watch Sportscenter. Usually a look of realization dawns on their face.

Whatever Marc is hot and even though I don’t speak Spanish I will be downloading the cd…

  2. Stubbylove says:

I remember when Nightline was actually known for covering NEWS – not interviewing Marc Anthony on his celebrity divorce and his overuse of the word “sensationalistic”. Ugh.

  3. Mari says:

Ahhh, you called it…an emotional affair. Hurts just the same. He reminds me of a yapping chihuahua.

  4. the original bellaluna says:

Celeb-watching/gossip is ABSOLUTELY a sport. Anyone who says otherwise is not in touch with the real world. (And how sad for us is that?)

I just think Marc doesn’t have the “divo” antics in him that J-Ho does.

So (OF COURSE) whatever he says/does is going to pale in comparison.

  5. LOVE ANGELINA says:

“his clothing line with Kohl’s” Ewwwwww.

I am trying to figure out what woman who has the opportunity to ride Will Smith, would mess around on him with a guy who has a clothing line coming to Kohls (ewwww), has a bunch of baby mammas, and is in debt apparently, not sure if thats true or not?

Hmmmm….hmmmmm….hhmmmm Who would mess around on rich ass Will Smith with guy who has a clothing line at Kohls? Who would do something soo stupid? IDK. Here is who I don’t think would do it. Jada-Pinkett Smith.

#2: i remember when nightline was like that too.

  7. sara says:

Oh yeah Marc did something and he was not convincing at all. They had two much tied-up Marc just thought that since Jlo forgave for cheating before that she would again. My mother says(she follows latin gossip) That as Marc got more hollywood fame the more cockey he became and in a few latin interviews he was sort of dismissive of Jlo…he really thought he had her tied with a bow (my mother words) So that he cheated one to many time is more likely but I what I really want to know with WHOM did he cheat this last time that made Jlo say ENOUGH

  8. DetRiotgirl says:

Full stop. Marc Anothony has a clothing line??? What’s it called? J’Adore Skeletor? Burboney? Haus of Sensationalistic Skin Wrappings for men?

Help me out guys, am I getting warm here?

  9. ladybert62 says:

Jada tried to mediate the split of Marc and Jennifer – that is hysterical – I bet Jennifer thought it was real funny too! I would have punched Jada’s lights out (and then she probably would have beat me up!) ha ha

  10. Harley says:

    @DetRiotgirl- lmfao! J’Adore Skelator? OMG, I can’t stop laughing!

  11. 4Real says:

    “J’Adore Skelator”!!!! LOL!!! AWESOME!

I knew from the moment they started doing EVERYTHING together looking soooo in love they were doomed. They just couldn’t live up to either ones expectation. I would even bet they BOTH cheated.

  12. mln76 says:

I think the Jada affair is a hoax to drum up interest in that crappy tv shoe Hawthorne.

  13. Rita says:

    @Kaiser

I think you were confusing sensationalistic with the faux word “sensationexpialidocious”. Don’t worry about it. I get them confused all the time (but then, I don’t make my living writing).

  14. the original bellaluna says:

Not to be the cold shower on a hard-on, but the clothing line was supposed to be a collaboration with J-Ho and Skelator.

Rita, your smartassness is off the charts today! LOVES IT! 😀

  15. Sue says:

mln76@ I agree Jada affair is a hoax to drum up interest in that crappy tv show Hawthorne.

Let’s face it Jade is as much of a diva as JLO is and if Marc did cheat you would think it would be with someone opposed of that.

  16. 9 out 10 experts recommend says:

@ original bellaluna- hell yeah. I agree celeb watching is a sport. It is world wide. Sad that society lives vicariously through famous people. Personally the media which is mostly controlled by the governments is encouraged to distract us all from the bigger issues; criminal and negligible activities by various governments and corporations (like the banks). Conspiracy theorists eat your heart out.
Jenny from the block will use this as publicity for her next big promo probably later on after the ‘sensationalism’ has died down. “yes marc had an affair!” sob. “I wanted to be an example for my kids”sob. Most celebs are too narrisstic to get married. Both will marry again.

  17. ol cranky says:

am I really the only one who thinks he held JHo up as some ultimate perfect woman to the point he disrespected/cheated on his baby mama’s and then realized how far from his fantasy she really was he finally had her?

My guess is she wanted out because her star was faded and he didn’t help her celebrity, and he realized she was a miserable overbearing beyotch

  18. babao leket says:

Wow, somebody give this man an Oscar because that was the most remorse I’ve ever seen an actor express. http://bit.ly/n279tN

  19. Rita says:

    @original bellaluna

I’m going to have to call you out on “smartassness”. Surely, that too is a faux word…too many S’s.

And don’t call me Sherly!!! *Kiss Cheek Kiss Cheek*

  20. John Wayne Lives says:

I’m glad he decided to say something.. anything.

  21. Ling says:

He’s probably not going to deny the bit about Jada – especially if he’s bearding for her. You guys need to look at this blind item: http://dlisted.com/2011/08/25/blind-items-i-guess-you-guess

  22. girlwithapearl says:

Aw, I think he seems genuine. Can we not just chalk it up to things just not working out?
    No, it’s Hollywood.
