Eddie Murphy is your new Oscar host: A prediction and defense

wenn2819940

For days now, there have been rumors that Eddie Murphy was the leading contender to host the 2012 Oscars. After this previous year’s hosts – Anne Hathaway and James Franco – a steady, professional, ADULT hand on the Oscar till would be welcome, which is why my immediate reaction was “happy!” when I heard the news confirmed, that Eddie would be hosting the next ceremony. But is Eddie up for it? Many people don’t think he is, and they point to his current trend of family-oriented, mainstream, dumbed-down comedies as supposed “evidence” that he’ll be bad at the job. To which I say: BITCH PLEASE.

Now, I’m not saying that Eddie is the most obvious choice, or that it’s a sure thing that he’ll be good. Eddie got the gig because Brett Ratner, a hack director who has had enormous financial success doing the whole “dumbed down” thing, is producing this year’s telecast. But for all of Brett Ratner’s fault, he likes and appreciates “old Hollywood” and mainstream, crowd-pleasing, big-“get” awards shows. My guess is that Ratner will put a lot of energy into getting GOOD, interesting, quality people to the awards show as presenters, and then they’ll just let Eddie do his thing.

So, back to Eddie and how he’ll do. The old Eddie, the Beverly Hills Cop/Raw-version of Eddie would never be asked to host the Oscars. He would only be asked to host the MTV Movie Awards, which Eddie did do, and he was a great host. For all of the Norbit jokes you throw at Eddie, he’s a pro. He knows how to handle himself, he knows how to improvise, he knows how to command a room, and he knows how to entertain. I’m not a fanatical Eddie apologist, although I will admit to carrying a childhood crush on him into my adulthood. But come on, haters: even you bitches have to admit, when Eddie is on it, he’s really, really good.

And you know what? James Franco set the bar so low, all Eddie has to do is show up, and he’ll be worlds better.

When Eddie’s good, he is very, very good. And when he is bad he is horrid.

I still find Beverly Hills Cop funny, and I seem to be alone in believing his double role in “Bowfinger” was Oscar-worthy. I loved both the paranoid superstar character – the one who counted all the “K”s in the script, divided by 3, and then claimed the script was all about the “KKK” – and his luckless cousin, sent out to be an action star without a stuntman. The scene in which they send him through freeway traffic still makes me laugh, and I haven’t seen the movie in nearly 20 years.

  2. Kaboom says:

Assuming The Help gets nominated he’ll have all the ammo he needs.

  3. LeeLoo says:

I thought the Oscars were trying to increase their ratings not cause them to decline even more.

Eddie Murphy hasn’t done stand-up in what? 20 years? I think he’s lost his sense of humor. Plus I hate the guy because of his rumored misogynistic controlling ways. Apparently he demanded that his ex-wife be dressed up in makeup and heels before she came to the breakfast table. It may be just a rumor but there is something about it that I believe.

  4. gee says:

Coming to America is one of the best movies ever. EVAARR.

  5. Danziger says:

Oh my. Eddie’s gotten HOT with age. He’s a douche from what I’ve read, but booooy. Oh well, he’s nice to look at. A nice-looking douche.

And I agree with what CandyKay said. If he’s good, he’s brilliant, if he’s bad, he f-cking sucks. I hope that if he does host the Oscars, he’ll show that better side of his talent.

  6. Marianne says:

I think Eddie Murphy will do a great job. He is a really funny comedian. I know that lately he’s been more known for his kiddie movies like Shrek, but I think this is a right turn.

  7. Jaded says:

Does anyone remember him when he was practically unknown on the old Saturday Night Live show doing the take-off on James Brown “Owww–I’m gettin’ in the HOT TUB”—absolutely side splittingly funny. That’s the Eddie I like to remember, not the paranoid controlling douche he’s apparently become….

  8. mamaT says:

i have a feeling that this is going to be the pivot point of his coming back to a more Raw-like Eddie, which, really, one of the best standups ever.

  9. flutters says:

I’m with you Kaiser. I think this is a good choice and that this’ll be a star turn for the good Eddie.

  10. shay kay says:

    @Jaded
“In the HOT TUB!” Loved it!My sister and I still occasionally imitate Eddie’s James Brown! Also, loved his,
“I’m Gumby d*mnit!” and his version of Mr. Roger’s NeighborHOOD!
“Raw” is was funny then, now, and tomorrow.
As for the show, Eddie has done some unforgettable comedy and while his humor may be “dumbed down” these days you can’t take away the man’s cutting edge past. He’s still got the timing, the physical stamina, and heart that propelled him to stardom in the first place. Never count Eddie out.

  11. inthekitchen says:

@CandyKay #1, I am so there with you. Bowfinger is one of my all time fav movies. I could watch it once a month and still laugh at it. My favorite scene is the one in the parking lot where Kit thinks he’s being followed and it’s really the dog in high heels. I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants the first time I saw that. The final scene of the ninjas taking down the fake purse factory is pretty funny too. Plus, the whole thing is bashing the insanity of Scientology, so, got to love that (IMO).

I still love Beverly Hills Cop too and Coming to America. He hasn’t made much of anything good lately, but his old stuff is pretty good and still enjoyable.

  12. smh says:

I hope he’ll be funny the way he was in SNL. I miss -that- Eddie Murphy

  13. Nanea says:

I have no idea why they asked Eddie.

Apart from the fact that he is a has-been, this is someone who was a sore loser, who got up and left when he didn’t win for Dreamgirls.

  14. smh says:

I know he is not as liked as he was before, but what comedian isn’t an arsehole in real life? Most of them are jaded, mean, bitter human beings. Hopefully his hosting should be good, and even if not, it still can’t be worse than last year’s fiasco with the hipster prince Franco

  15. Lindsey says:

My girl wants to party all the time, party all time, party all ti-ime….sorry, couldn’t help it.

Anyway, I’m less concerned w/ how Eddie Murphy (I’ve always found him to be entertaining), but I’m more concerned w/ Brett Ratner…ugh

  16. VV says:

I agree with CandyKay…I love Bowfinger and I thought he was fantastic! I think that was one of his last really funny movies that I can recall. After that it just seemed to go downhill…meh.

I am looking forward to seeing how he does as an Oscar host!

  17. Anne says:

Maybe I’m being a bit cynical….The Help will probably win an Oscar or two despite it being a disgraceful book/film and the real life character the story is based on getting royally screwed.

Let’s have us a black MC this year and we won’t look so bad while we give out awards to black actresses playing maids. JMO.

  18. MJ says:

CandyKay and others – YES! I agree.

Eddie can be at the top of the heap or at the very bottom. It depends if he’s pandering or not… the Oscars usually require some pandering, but they’ve been trying to be “edgier” and more appealing to younger people, so maybe they’ll let him be a little more… raw.

I’m sure he is a total asshole. Remember the whole “just giving her a ride” transvestite prostitute incident in the 1990s… with his early “Faggots” routine, I think the dude doth protest too much, as they say.

Still, he looks super sharp in these photos! I think I need to go put on “Boogie in Your Butt” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=07P538K83iU
    )

  19. lucy2 says:

I hope he’ll do a good job, I think it could go either way. Can’t be much worse than asleep at the wheel Franco though.

  20. mrsezc says:

ugh .. hate him … won’t be watching this year. I’m sure half his monologue will be beeped out. The man can’t talk with out the F-word.

  21. kiko says:

god eddie used to be fun!i don’t know if he can be a good host but like everyone says he is still a million times better than the losers from last year…

  22. jover says:

He can’t do any worse than this year’s snorefest which could easily have been reduced to 1 hr. but that the celebutards just can’t get enough of themselves in pics and limelight; i agree Coming to america was a great movie another film emblematic of the 80s; I wonder how many movies over the last 11 years will capture this time period the way some of the best 80s flicks captured their time period – a commentary on our balkanized pop culture and its poor quality in general compared to the best of the 80s – and who could forget eddie as Gumby Dammit!!! on SNL (when it was good).

  23. mln76 says:

Agree with everyone who misses the old Eddie Murphy. You can’t lose that kind of funny completely. So I am looking forward to the Oscars. O-TAY.

  24. TXCinderella says:

Ewwwwww…why? I have not liked him ever since he tried to deny that Scary Spice’s baby was not his. Loser.

  25. Original Tiffany says:

Eddie Murphy gets an auto pass in my book for all the crap movies he has done because he blessed the world with SNL doing James Brown, Buckwheat and Mister Roger’s neighborhood, his early stand up, the guy pulled off a red leather suit! Genius! The ice-cream man, the stories from when he was a kid, Coming to America and obviously, his hilarious Bowfinger! I LOVE that scene on the freeway.
I try not to judge on his personal douche things. Listened to Boogie in your butt yesterday. My 11 and 13 year old think it is hilarious. Put a tiny man in your butt, and hopefully he’ll do a great job.
I couldn’t even get through Franco and Hathaway last year.

  26. the original bellaluna says:

I just hope it’s funny this year instead of pathetic.

To those who think he’s “lost it” I encourage you to watch all 4 Shrek movies.

Now if he was hosting the Oscar’s in character as Donkey, I’d totally watch all 342 hours of the show!

  27. Ally says:

He’s charming and he can tell a joke. Win!

Plus everyone in attendance (plus the FCC) will be terrified he’ll go Raw at any second.

  28. MJ says:

LMAO at (with) Tiffany! This is all true. If I discounted every performer’s body of work based on their personality, I wouldn’t have any art left to enjoy. It takes a lot of crazy to be that funny.

  29. Anoni Mus says:

I like the idea of him hosting the Oscars. Same as with Billy Crystal, I think that a good stand up comedian can be great for the show.

Maybe a comeback for Eddie? He sure could use one.

  30. UKHels says:

only if they let him do it in red leather

  31. hatsumomo says:

I hope he kills it. When I heard he was hosting, I was thinking how the hell he got the gig. Then I heard it was through Bret Rathner and I groaned. That guy did such a horrendous job with the X-men movie. But he also did all the Rush Hour movies and they weren’t that bad, so it could go either way.

Coming To America was on the other day on TV. That movie is still hilarious!

  32. Amanda G says:

I’m actually pleasantly surprised with this choice. I’ve always shook my head at how Eddie went from being edgy to kid friendly to desperate, but maybe this will be an opportunity for him to revive his career.

  33. Dolkite says:

Not to say I’m not in favor of Eddie hosting (it’s about time he returned to standup), but I thought it might be interesting to share the very first joke in Eddie’s first concert film:

“I got some rules, some rules when I throw down and do my standup, I got rules and sh*t. Straight up, f*ggots aren’t allowed to look at my ass while I’m onstage.”

  34. sandy#1 says:

i still like Eddie, i think he is a great choice, i will finally watch again after 4 years of skipping it, Eddie is very entertaining.

  35. Tim Whatley says:

Trading Places, people? Best movie, evah?

  36. Eve says:

    @ Kaiser:

But come on, haters: even you bitches have to admit, when Eddie is on it, he’s really, really good.

Totally agree. I do miss old Eddie Murphy (minus the homophobic jokes) but even now that he’s nowhere as funny as he used to be, I believe that, if given the chance, he can nail this.

    @ Tim Whatley:

Trading Places is one of my all time favourite movies. I watched it again two days ago and even though I knew every single one of the scenes by heart, I laughed my ass off at them.

    @ Dolkite:

Oh, the irony that was when he was caught “just giving a ride” to a transvestite in West Hollywood…

  37. LittleDeadGrrl says:

I think he’s gotten rusty. If this is the Trading Places/Beverly Hills Cop Murphy than yeah it would be fucking amazing but I have my doubts. Oscars are getting worst every year. I don’t think I’ve sat through a whole event in at least seven or eight years.

  38. kikay says:

I think he will do a great job ,he’s Eddie f*****g Murphy for goodness sake,i think comedian actor the older they get the more funny and interesting they become(atleast some of them are).Atleast it’s better than getting those annoying and boring actor they get the last time.
