Julia Louis-Dreyfus tries to get Jerry Seinfeld to live eco-friendly lifestyle

According to the National Enquirer, environmentalist and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus is trying to convince her old co-star Jerry Seinfeld to stop living like a super rich natural-resource sucking pig. I don’t pay a lot of attention to her, but it’s worth noting that she comes from obscene money, like she’s the heir to a billion-plus fortune, and prior to learning that I assumed she was just a sitcom actress paying her dues. She doesn’t pull rank or flash her wealth, is what I’m saying. This story kind of brings that home for me. Meanwhile Jerry Seinfeld owns at least 46 Porsches. Like I don’t know if it’s every single Porsche ever made, but it’s thought to be the largest collection. Anyway Julia is maybe-badgering Jerry about it.

[Julia Louis-Dreyfus] has been peppering Jerry, 57, with e-mails and phone calls in an attempt to encourage him to become environmentally friendly, said a pal of Julia.

“Julia is an avid recycler, only uses water when she has to and drives and electric car,” explained the source.

And while Jerry supports some conservationist causes and has done a promotional spot for America’s National Parks, “he loves his fleet of fast gas-chomping cars.”

In fact the insider said he even makes fun of people with electric cars!

“He joked to Julia that he isn’t ready to become a tree-hugger just yet, and that she should leave all the green stuff to Captain Planet…”

Jerry’s legendary car collection is house, in part, in a 22-car garage at his palatial Long Island estate…

In contrast, Julia… lives in a far more modest eco-friendly home in Montecito near Santa Barbara, CA.

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, September 19, 2011]

The other day, this mom I know through my kid’s friend spent like a half hour on the phone trying to convince me to go to a Christian woman’s conference. I made the mistake (in her eyes) of once rejecting an offer for my kid to go to Bible study. This lady was truly convinced I was going to hell for not sharing her belief system and she somehow thought she could convince me where years of experience and study have failed. She was nicer about it than that, but the message came through loud and clear. (Most of my friends are Christians and they can tell me about their church and Bible stuff and we’re cool with each other. This was different.)

Just to clarify, I’m not saying that living an environmentally responsible lifestyle, and being committed to that lifestyle and trying to share it with your friends, is the same as being a religious person and thinking other people really must believe the exact same thing. I’m just thinking that to someone like Julia, who is so green she glows, she does see it as a personal mission to get her close friends to come around and lower their environmental footprint. Only she’s not saving their souls, she’s saving the planet. My take on it is that it takes more than just one person to get someone to come around. It’s like politics, people believe what they believe and it takes a personal experience to change their opinion. Being environmentally responsible is more of a societal issue in that it has to be easier and more convenient to do the right thing when it comes to recycling and living responsibly. And there are always going to be jerks like Seinfeld who feel entitled to take as much of the pie as they can.

I call them “Granola Crunchers.” I live close to MOAB, UT and the “Crunchers” are always out in full force around here! Their Prius loving ways are annoying most of the time…

  2. lucy2 says:

I think a little nudging now and then is OK, but when people push, it bugs. Especially with religious stuff, to me that’s a private thing no one should pester others about.
I’ve always liked her, and respected the way she chose to be vs. other billionaire heiresses. She did her own thing and has been hugely successful.

On the other hand, I’ve grown to REALLY dislike Jerry. He seems like an awful person.

  3. Goofpuff says:

Its easy to be super green when you can afford what you need to do it and still live in the modern world. Jerry likes his cars. Big woop. He’s not driving them all at once every hour all over the place.

  4. cmc says:

Wow, she looks just like Bethenny Frenkel. Never noticed that til now. Or, Bethenny looks like her, whatever.

  5. labikina says:

Julia looks amazing for a 50 yr. old. She’s one of the rare actresses who I think have gotten more attractive with age.

  6. Sarah says:

Agreed labikina! She is 15 years older than me and we look the same age! She’s more gorgeous now than ever.

  7. Jackson says:

Wow, she is 50?? She looks great. So she and Madonna are similar ages? No comparison.

  8. CG says:

@Goofpuff: Not trying to start a fight or sound holier-than-thou or anything, but I buy recycled tissues and toilet paper, recycle everything I possibly can, have a low-flow shower head and drive a Prius (which is 3 1/2 years old). None of that stuff (aside from the car, obvs) is expensive. You don’t have to be super-rich to be green. Every little bit helps! 🙂

  9. malachais says:

@sarah, agreed. I love Julia, she is so funny and quirky. I hope she continues bugging Jerry to atleast make him more environmentally aware.

  10. layla says:

I am so impressed with the not knowing of her billion dollar background. Wow. Or maybe she hit her fame in the days when we didn’t now everything about every celebrity.

Either way – kudo’s for her on forging her own path.

  11. Dizzybenny says:

I’m with George Carlin on this one.

why is it that’s it is always rich white people tha push the ”save the planet” crap upon us??

Anyway we are not killing the planet we’re killing humanity.

The planet has been here for a long time and will continue to be wayyy after we are gone.

  12. omj says:

Frankly, I’d rather someone preach to me about the enviroment than berate me for my religious views (or as happened a few weeks ago- hand me a flyer that say God Hates F*gs and Aids is their punishment).

  13. Tiffany says:

Hahahahaha….She can piss on Jerry Seinfeld’s net worth. If Jessica Seinfeld could get her hands on Julia, she totally would.

  14. xxodettexx says:

    @omj: that is horrid…

i have over the years learned to laugh off the religious “persuaders” and i always walk away from those kinds of vitriolic conversations… as for the people constantly trying to green me up, i always politely remind them that yes, i agree our environment should be cared for and that yes, i am doing my part – what i can AFFORD to do, that is!

  15. ol cranky says:

so sad that any time I see a Prius or hear a celebrity talk about being green (I mean KLS, not JLD though), I flash to the South Park Smug Alert ep

  16. HannahG says:

Urgh. I was on a pro ED site earlier (research) and this picture of Julia really reminded me of a comment from the site. It was from a woman who cried with happiness and joy when her son exclaimed that she could carry water in the sunken wells made by her collar bones.

  17. Liamarie says:

I’m as green as I can be. What’s good for the earth is good for humanity.

  18. Kelly says:

I love Julia! She is so cool!

  19. Chris says:

These cashed up celebs should be putting their time and money into getting the Greens elected, instead of wasting their support on the Democrats, who are nothing more than the good cop in the good cop bad cop routine put on by the two major parties.

  20. Susie #1 says:

That is one painfully tight face.

  21. LittleDeadGrrl says:

My belief is that if someone is interested in a debate you can share your personal views but else mind your own business. I get that the green stuff effects us all but I get a rash when anyone tries to “covert” anyone else. You live your life. I live mine. Simple.

  22. not a fan says:

While I agree that fervent prostelysation about anything (religion, politics, etc.) is annoying and unproductive, I’m kind of surprised about how many people have negative things to say about being environmentally conscious. Not about JS and JLD, but in the comments section. Maybe electric cars and Prius cars aren’t God’s gift to transportation, but they are a legitimate attempt to address an important need to conserve energy and limit our assault on the planet. I don’t think we need to ration toilet paper, but I think that it’s important to remember every day that we are the stewards for our childrens’ environment. No one’s perfect, but I don’t see anything wrong with encouraging my friends and family (and especially, myself) to be greener. I won’t call them and berate them at home (stone, glass houses, you know). But I’ve been known to offer to take cans and bottles to recycle after a party, or point out when people’s tire pressure looks low. Or to insist on taking the bus once in a while when we’re all together.

I live in California and even here I’m shocked when I can’t find a recycling bin. Live and let live is fine, but I don’t want my children’s lungs wrecked by asthma or climate change.

There are some holier-than-thou jerks about everything out there. But I wish people would stop tarring all environmentalists as hippies just because EarthFirst act like fools.

  23. blinditemreader says:

I’m with you notafan. The environment is suffering and in crisis and rather than find ways to reduce harm to the planet we’re doing the opposite. *cough* tar sands *cough* I could go on but I won’t.

It’s the multinationals that I’m angry at and I wish more people were informed about what’s going on because I have a hard time believing that anyone wants their children, grandchildren, etc. to suffer because of corporate greed and ignorance.

I do my bit and am not perfect but that’s all I can do as one human. I can only hope it makes enough of an impact. I try not to say too much but if people bring it up they are likely to hear my frustration. I’m incredibly sad about what’s happening around us.

  24. Hawk says:

Does Jerry go out the the garage each morning, start all his cars at once and let them idle for a few hours?

    No?

    Then leave him alone.

  25. poopie says:

i wouldn’t drive one of those deathtrap small egg cars if they were free !

leave jerry alone – it’s not like he’s starting them all up and driving all of them at the same time !

  26. Patricia says:

I dated a guy once who looked at me like I was the devil if I purchased so much as a paperclip.
He would insist I could secure my papers with a twig or a leaf or anything that had not been manufactured by an evil human.

    Give me a break jack.

Needless to say he got recycled.

  27. Kelly says:

JLD rules now and forever! She is hilarious and smart, and beautiful.
