Taylor Swift in Rodarte for NYFW: too doily, too precious, too much?

66659pcn_taylor04

These are some newish photos of Taylor Swift walking to the Rodarte runway show yesterday, during NYFW. Swifty‘s dress is Rodarte, obviously. Now… some have claimed that I am prepared to go to war against lace and crochet. They might be right. It’s not that I just flat-out hate lace and crochet, always and forever. I just think that:

1. Head-to-toe lace is always going to be a bad idea. Always. No exceptions.
2. Head-to-toe crochet is always going to be a bad idea. Always. No exceptions.
3. Beware of too much white/cream lace/crochet, because The Doily Effect occurs.
4. Lace is very “precious” and “girly” and a little bit goes a long way on adult women.
5. Crochet is very “grandmother” and a little bit goes a long way on women younger than, say, 70 years old.
6. Beware of The Lingerie Effect – lace details can often look like your panties are showing.
7. Lace and crochet rarely photograph well, so while it might look lovely and pretty in person, the effect will probably be lost on camera.

So, with all of my lace rules/suggestions in place, what do you think of Taylor Swift’s ensemble? Doily Effect. Too precious. Too old. Too much, all over. Plus, the odd “antiqued” look to the crochet is throwing me off. This goes beyond The Doily Effecct and it looks like Swifty just draped her grandmother’s giant, ratty, old, hand-knitted crochet blanket on herself.

So, let me say something nice about Swifty… she has really nice skin. And I’ve never noticed how pretty her profile is.

Oh, I meant to mention this – Joe Jonas wants Swifty back, according to Us Weekly. If you remember, Swifty and Joe were cuddlefesting, and then he went and cuddlefested Camilla Belle, and then Joe dumped Swifty over the phone. And so Swifty cried and wrote music about Joe, and about Camilla being a giant slut. And now Joe wants Swifty back? Interesting. Your move, Camilla.

I love Taylor but this is too too much.

The porcelain doll face is approaching geisha girl status and that dress makes her look heavy about the waist….not to mention it makes me want to throw some velcro dinner plates at her.

  2. GiGi says:

Hmm… I bet she just feels all kinds of romantic and whimsical in this. This girl thinks her life is a storybook, I’m afraid.

  3. Lynnie says:

Will someone please tell this cute girl that it’s time to cut the friggin’ hair?! And she has a lovely, tall, thin figure but you can’t tell in this dress.

  4. kimm says:

That dress is horrible – my grandmother wouldn’t wear that…….

  5. lola says:

I think it’s a lovely dress, she just needs different shoes and a better walk. I bet in person it’s really great with all the detailing.

  6. carrie says:

    i dislike Rodarte

  7. Sara says:

Oh no, the red lipstick looks harsh against that sack she is wearing.
    Love Taylor though!

  8. K-MAC says:

She scares the sh*t out of me!

  9. DetRiotgirl says:

I think she looks beautiful, in spite of my mixed feelings about the dress. On the one hand, it’s very “Oregon trail” and makes me think a text bubble telling me that someone in my party has died of dysentery will be popping up over these pictures at any given second. But, on the other hand, I do think she’s kind of working it here. So, eh… This look is alright.

  10. Heebeegeebee says:

Taylor is lovely, but in what world would this dress be beautiful and worthy of being called couture? I just can’t imagine.

  11. gab says:

So that’s where my lace piano cover went! The piano wears it better.

  12. mdf says:

The dress is giving me flash backs of Holly Hobby from my childhood.

  13. Tierra says:

I actually like the dress except for the collar/chest area thing (dont know what you call it). Its not something I would wear but I kind of like it.

Aside from that, Im not liking her hair strait, it looks too flat on top.

  14. L says:

Actually I think the only exception to the all lace rule is a wedding dress. But that’s it.

    This look is megh.

  15. Happy21 says:

Love her but the dress has got to go back into Grandma’s doily closet!

  16. brin says:

    All of the above.

  17. Ashley says:

I like the waist detailing, and the profile of the dress.

    Agree on the crochet/lace rules.

  18. Amanda G says:

She looks like a doll and that’s not a good thing…

  19. Ally says:

Rodarte looks inventive and beautiful on the runway, but unflattering and ridiculous in real life, even on skinny celebrities. So a bit of a designer fail there.

  20. KLO says:

Grandma’s dirty curtains. But I like the make-up and hair.

  21. danielle says:

    Ye gods that’s awful!

  22. sharylmj says:

UGLY DRESS!!! Pretty girl, except for the awkward way she is walking…

  23. neelyo says:

I wish the media would stop pretending that she’s pretty. She’s wearing ten lbs. of make-up and she still resembles a rodent. Maybe she’s a talented singer/songwriter (don’t know her work) but she ain’t good looking. It’s the same thing with Miley Cyrus.

  24. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    Face by Ceruse
    Dress by Spirograph
    Lips by Divine
    Shoes by Chopinette’s Secret
    Hair by Downpour
    Boyfriend by SparkleContract

Maybe she was born like that, hoping it’s make-believe.

    Aw, I’m mean. 🙁

  25. RocketMerry says:

Amazing skin, serial killer stare. *Shivers*

  26. suz says:

    over. it.

  27. geekychic says:

ugh. it looks like a costume, and i do love costumes, but this is just ugly.

  28. HeiN says:

No no no no no! NO!

  29. Nan says:

Odd. I agree that common (fashion) sense tells that anything full lace/crochet is wayy too much, but … I actually like it on her. Really-really like, but can’t understand why. As I said odd.

  30. jover says:

Gbehmy its called marketing and product packaging to tweens and soccer moms that have no taste in music – I will listen to Jimi hendrix and esperanza spalding, remember for swifty the world is her junior high school.

  31. Booboocita says:

She’s a pretty girl, and she looks good even with the busy detail and overdone froufrou. But I dunno … lately, she just seems so twee, so darling and precious, that seeing her photos makes my blood sugar rise. I just want to stick her in a hermetically sealed glass box with appropriate lighting and display her in a curios cabinet. Time for some serious image updating, maybe to something a little more clean and modern and less “real-life American Girl doll.”

  32. Micah says:

Ridiculous dress, but suits her perfectly.

  33. Sahidul says:

Beautiful! Rare to see a superstar dress modestly these days.

  34. Tiffany says:

She is completely tiny, but it makes her look thick in the waist. Not good!

  35. Reece says:

Ultimately I like this dress just not so much on her.
What is it with her and the nude colors when she is pale herself? Who is dressing her? At least she straightened her hair with it. So that it’s simple and not clashing with the dress. She’s tall and thin so the shape looks good on her. Some of it is good and other is so bad.

  36. gee says:

Shes like play pretending she’s on the runway. BLEGH to Swifty.

  37. Reece says:

    The shoes are terrible!

  38. ladybert62 says:

I think the dress looks OK on her – her hair however needs to be brushed, styled and cut.

  39. whybenice says:

I guess Scarlett used up all the drapes so Taylor was stuck with the doilies.

  40. Elizabeth says:

What the heck is she trying to do with her hair? Whatever it is, she not getting there. The lace doily dress also has to go.

  41. Ell says:

I think the dress looks okay. I love the crochet but I’m never a fan of lace. This girl gets so much stick for being ‘nice’, shame our culture prefers to idolise bad role models.

  42. Jules says:

Dang, that’s where my grandma’s tablecloth went!

  43. Heatheradair says:

girlfriend should think about chopping the hair into a bob. Stick with the less curling-ironed-to-high-hell thing and think about completely nixing pastels, lace and eyeliner for about a year.

    We’d like her better then.

  44. lola lola says:

Blech! Looks like granny made it.

  45. VintageBum says:

Oh my roaring 20’s grandma! Darling! Please wear clothes that compliment your figure!

  46. Mia says:

    YES TO LACE RULES
    1. If you can’t make lace work, it’s YOUR handicap. With that said I agree: a little goes a far way!!! Lace shouldn’t cover more than 10% of you…. ever.
    2. At least this dress adds curves where there are none.
    3. I agree, she has such a pretty skin & face, so why the drag queen makeup?

  47. mary simon says:

ugh. tired of seeing her in filmy, flesh colored frocks.

  48. eve says:

If something is crochet, it can’t be hand-knitted. Knitting and crocheting are two very different ways of producing fabric.

  49. mannequin says:

Oh gosh, I just love Rodarte and she looks beautiful in that dress. It’s so her!

  50. colt13 says:

Kimm, depends on how old your grandmother is. Reminds me of a Pioneer Woman.

  51. aquarius64 says:

She looks like she’s wearing a doily. Still selling the sweet and innocent image with all those high profile notches on the guitar neck.

  52. Thea says:

Something to me is just off about her. I am not sure what, but something is just not right.

  53. 4Real says:

HOLY CRAP…literally! It looks like MOTHS have attacked a FUGLY doily dress!

  54. Erin says:

WHAT IS HER HAIR DOING. or trying to do…?

  55. 4outOf5 says:

I hate, hate, hate the way her makeup artist does her makeup. You need to open up those eyes! She was so much cuter looking, even pretty, when she was younger w/out all that makeup & that weird hairdo she’s always got going. She should just let her hair go to it’s natural curl & not look so perfectly coiffed.

  56. Anne says:

Ugh. She always looks so smug and fake, she bothers me.

  57. corey says:

Take away the flowery mesh top part (sleeves and upper chest). Put the dress on someone with an hourglass shape a la Jessica Simpson. And different colored shoes, something less matchy-matchy. OK now it’s…tolerable

  58. Claire78 says:

I think it is the hair that bugs me – somehow no matter how much she tries it doesn’t work. If she cut her hair and made it more interesting I think it would help!

  59. Gretchen says:

I guess i’m alone here, but I actually really like the dress! I’m pretty neutral on the swifty, but I think the bright red lipstick helps to zhuzh the outfit up a bit, if she went for a peachy or pink lipstick and more neutral make-up it would definitely make the look too precious and whimsical.

Also I like the fact that she doesn’t dress ‘young’, I have no problem with what other young female singers are wearing, but the fact that swifty goes against the ‘young popstar’ mould works in her favour and helps her to stand out from the rest.

  60. kelbear says:

I miss the Taylor Swift from the Tim Mcgraw video…..

  61. foozy says:

    horrifying and way too old!

  62. gobo says:

Awful, very unflattering and I really hate the length.

  63. galaxy.girl says:

    I think she looks lovely.

Idk how women wear things that may be so itchy!

  64. Vera says:

The lace up top is what kills it for me. If they’d finished it off at the top and she’d gotten a nice pale green shoe and clutch or some other colour combo, it would look nice. The fake belted thing is also a bit ehhhh, but the lace kind of takes away from it.

Makeup looks alright, though I didn’t look at it much while starring at that lace. I adore lace, but that isn’t even that nice of lace to begin with.

  65. Liamarie says:

That dress looks like it smells like an attic.

  66. Blithe says:

Oh shit. And I just gave away my badge for “fugliest dress of all time, bar none” to Beyonce’s recent mess. *sigh* Oh well. Can’t take it back. Swift looks like she’s on her way to the retirement home in this number.

  67. Joe says:

She should weaR makeup she had on in her “Story Of Us” video. Minimal but beautiful.

  68. Lauren says:

TS is gorgeous, no one else on earth could pull off that dress-not even AJ. And yes, Taylor can sing ! Love you Taylor.

  69. LittleDeadGrrl says:

Hate it. Too covered up and old looking for someone her age and just a bad dress and I rather like lace and crochet. You can do it in a way that looks but this isn’t one of them.

  70. I love Taylor and I actually think she looks so beautiful. She is a very pretty, flawless girl…and she always looks great! I do think something different needed to be done with her gorgeous, curly blonde hair…NO ugly, non-matching extensions…this is her real hair, all of it!!! I like the dress for her, I lso like the shoes, and especially the beautiful red lipstick. Her makeup looks good too. I love her & her beautiful singing & song writing. I love the look!

  71. luls says:

She’s adorable! But the dress, not so much…

  72. Michael Fairley says:

Taylor is so beautiful in Rodarte, especially in this cool dress, that I almost loose my mind! Her beautiful pale skin, the angel-hair, she is so descended from the very right hand of God… I am in eternal love with this beauty…
