Brad Pitt will quit acting in “three years” when he’s 50 years old

brad1

Go ahead and yell at me, but I think as the years go on, Brad Pitt has become a fine actor. Not the world’s greatest or anything, but he’s turned into one of the most interesting and talented actors of his generation, and one of the most underrated. When he was younger, he was simply “watchable” – you liked his movies because he was pretty and a romantic hero and because of his amazing body. But like his career mentor and friend Robert Redford, Brad has lost his “prettiness” as he ages, and he’s gained some talent through the years. Now I watch in films because he simply turns in great, interesting performances in underrated films. Did I mention how much I liked him in Moneyball? He was wonderful in that.

So now that I’m a late-in-(his)-life Brad Pitt Fan, I found this news disappointing. While being interviewed for an Australian show, Brad claimed that he’s going to quit acting in three years’ time – when he’s 50. Noooooo.

Brad Pitt says he will quit acting in three years – when he turns 50. The 47-year-old star made the revelation to Australian chat show, 60 Minutes. He said he might move behind the camera when he steps out of the limelight but his days as a leading man are numbered.

Asked how long he would continue to act, he told the show: ‘Three years.’

When challenged as to what he would do afterwards, he joked: ‘Hell if I know!’ But he then said: ‘I’ve really enjoyed the producerial [sic] side and getting stories to the plate that may have had a harder time otherwise.’

The star also said happiness is overrated and being at peace was a more realistic aim. He explained: ‘I think happiness is overrated. Sometimes you’re happy, sometimes you’re not. There’s too much pressure to be happy. I don’t give a s**t. I know I will be happy sometimes and I won’t be at times. Being at peace is more of a goal for myself.’

He also said he once found fame ‘discombobulating’.

And he doesn’t know if he and partner Angelina Jolie will add to their six children.

‘I don’t know that we’re finished yet, I don’t know yet,’ he said.

Brad was interviewed in Tokyo for the show. He was there promoting his new movie, Moneyball.

[From The Mail]

“Producerial”? Well, he’s a better actor, but he’s still kind of dense. Part of me thinks that both Brad and Angelina just do the whole “I’m quitting this bitch” thing in interviews for extra headlines and as an idle threat so that we will enjoy our time with them even more. Or maybe they really do intend to quit. Meh. Angelina and Brad both have lots of projects lined up in various stages of pre-production, so I doubt they’ll be quitting any time soon.

Oh, and I’m starting to get the feeling that Brad is broody for another baby and Angelina is the one who is like, “Meh, six is enough.”

I thought he quit acting after Twelve Monkeys.

    *Boom – Boom – Tsch!*

Meh, Johnny Depp has said the same and I’ll believe it when I see it.

  2. Bite me says:

The kids are getting older maybe they want to settle down in the south of France

  3. Addie says:

As long as it isn’t Angie quiting in 3 years.

He is an ok actor, but his motives for saying this are sooo obvious, HE WANTS A DAMN OSCAR.

His work should really speak for itself and if he is the most deserving,he will get it fairly without the threat of ‘give him the oscar before he leaves us for good’

  4. donnamae54 says:

Beautiful wife, beautiful kids of which one is a chip off the old block (Knox) and an illustrious acting career. He and Angie must’ve been planning that for a while.

  5. missy says:

If he wins the Oscar for Moneyball, I can actually see him quitting or at least slowing down. If not, then he’ll keep going for sure. Actually, this could be a good oscar strategy. If people in hollywood really believe he is quitting, they may be more likely to give him the Oscar as a ‘career’ award.

  6. lisa says:

They both have said this.. why the doubt. Brad has starred in some amazing films. Sad that the need to knock him is so great for some

  7. Bite me says:

I have been reading some of critics reaction to La Jolie film and they claim it Oscar material… So La Jolie might be spending more time behind the camera

  8. Pyewacket says:

How will the world go on?????

  9. kira says:

Wait, what critical reaction to Jolie’s film? I thought this film isn’t out yet? As someone originally from that part of the world (Eastern Europe), I’m interested to see what the reviews are to her film.

  10. samira677 says:

It’s funny when people claim that just waking up in the morning is a publicity stunt. They never said they are retiring. What they they’ve said is they don’t plan on acting for another 20 years. This is the first time that either said a deadline. Frankly they don’t need to anything for headlines. They get headlines just getting into a car or getting a haircut.

  11. folly says:

@bite me,i have read few reviews too,and you can see how surprise they are that a woman could write and direct such heavy topic,i am so happy for her,and hope her work is more recognise

  12. lucy2 says:

Eh, we’ll see, I kind of doubt it. Easy to sit there and say it now.
I agree he’s a better actor now than he was years ago, but he’s just not one that I enjoy enough to seek out his work.

  13. Heine says:

I’ll believe it in three years when he has no movies lined up. As it is, this seems exactly like Oscar campaigning. I doubt anyone believes he will actually quit.

I doubt he will win an Academy Award any time soon. He’s too tabloid-famous to win an Oscar.

  14. N.D. says:

I think they’re both are happy with the number of kids they have and don’t say “we’re done” officially partly because they don’t like a finality of it and partly because “never say never” just sounds better. Softer. More sentimental.

About him quitting acting in three years I doubt he meant it as a huge official announcement of his actual plans. More like more or less random answer to standard question. I’m pretty sure he’ll continue to work in the biz in whatever capacity as long as there are interesting projects coming. He doesn’t sound like a man who’s losing interest in moviemaking/storytelling.

Keiser, what are those many projects Angelina has lined up? I don’t know about any. There are a few she’s rumored to be linked to but she didn’t sign for anything and isn’t even close to it as far as I know.

  15. morgane says:

    Doubt it
But whatever, I’ll not miss him. Sadly Angelina will still be around

  16. mln76 says:

I kind of believe him. I hope he doesn’t go full stop. I believe he said that he’ll no longer be a leading man. I think he’ll take supporting roles in a few projects down the line. He may not be as ‘naturally talented’ as some others but he’s made amazing choices and he’s grown ALOT as an actor and has really hit a good stride in the last few years. And we know he’s turning down offers left and right the Coen Brothers wanted him for Matt Damon’s role in True Grit, and Quentin T wanted him for Django unchained and I’ve heard of a few others.

  17. Becky says:

I have always found him talented, and I specially liked him in 12monkeys, but maybe the reason I found him talented in more due to expectations. The more good looking, usually the less talented – it’s biased but I think there’s a bit of truth. Of course there some of the most talented have been undoubtly good looking – i.e. Brando- though isn’t a bit surprising when someone so ridiculously good looking is also very talented, or very smart, or very charitable? I think what I’m really trying to say is that really good looking actors seem like they made it for their looks, so it’s a pleasant surprise when they can act as well.

  18. NM9005 says:

    @Tapioca: That was funny =)…

I don’t think he has the strenght to quit at the height of his career like Greta Garbo.
He might dislike the whole “fame” thing more than Jolie but to not be in the spotlight at all and not being cared about as an actor is too much to take for these people. Nothing worse than not being recognized so we’ll see in three years what he has to say. And even if he does quit it’s not like we will see the last of him. He will still be photographed and we will still know what’s going on in their household through Jolie. Also, Jolie is the most interesting one so unless she’s the one quitting, I doubt this news is going to make people go into a frenzy.

And I agree, he is one of the best actors of his generation + he grew significantly throughout his career but darn it if I don’t care. Weirdly enough, I enjoyed a few of his films but couldn’t admit he was a good actor because I just didn’t like him. Luckily that changed but he has something that I still don’t care about. Pitt will never draw me on his own to the cinema.

  19. Marni says:

Hopefully both he and Jolie will retire from acting soon, and take back seat roles.
During the interview Brad did talk about the paps attention given to the children, and how the children are learning to cope with it. Its sad that they even have to learn to cope. All the attention from the paps and loonie fans/non fans alike can not be good for them.

  20. Shan172 says:

Well, at least he’s not being snarky/yelling at reporters for “going there” (George C at TIFF,Cannes), looking down at Wichita (Johnny), screaming at colleagues (C Bale), or camping out at fashion shows looking for models and hiding in his hoodie at bars (Leo). I actually really have enjoyed many of Brad’s movie choices and think he has done some great work, esp in the past few years. Johnny is still my fav, but he seems to be making movies for my kids more- I was VERY PLEASANTLY surprised by The Tourist and quite disappointed by Rum Diaries- sigh.

  21. Rhiley says:

I think Benjamin Button is one of the greatest movies of all time and he was great in it and it is really a shame that he did not win an Oscar his role. He was also really good in MoneyBall, but Jonah Hill was better, and should be nominated for best supporting actor if not win the Oscar for it. I bet in 25 years Brad gets one of those Lifetime Achievement Oscars.

  22. dee says:

    I’m glad to hear that.

  23. flourpot says:

It’s odd that he put an age limit on the time he wants to stop acting. With all the kids running around, I’d figure the deadline would be when the kids hit an age (NOW) where they should be in a stable, consistent environment so they can start making lifelong friends. Not country hopping every 3 months.

Meh – what do I know. I’m poor. Love ’em both, at any rate.

  24. Maritza says:

If he gets rid of the beard and gets a haircut he’ll look 10 years younger, he can keep acting and producing on the side. He looks much better than Clooney, that’s for sure.

  25. olivia says:

If he intends to retire within tree years how does he expect to pay for their lavish lifestyle? 8 kids, plus a concubine with a entourage of 25, costs a small fortune. He’s worked behind the camera as a producer for years, and that has been an epic FAIL. Not one of this movies that he has personally “produced” have been hugely profitable, with the exception of The Departed back in 2006. If he is relying on his concubine will have this HUGE career as a Director, then he’s going to have one hell of a wake up call!! He can’t write…heck he can’t even speak in a coherent manner. He already stated himself, he wouldn’t be able to direct a movie. Both speak with forked tongue. I don’t believe it is as much as Pitt going to quit acting, as the roles seem to be drying up (just like for his concubine)………and studio’s are starting to understand that just because this “celebrity” can sell tabloids and it has been a media manipulated “image” of him being the “King of Hollywood”, doesn’t turn into profit at the movie theaters…

  26. Linnie says:

Liar, liar, pants on fire. By the way, I can see why Angelina usually wears neutral lipstick. Her lips in the top pic look like the wax ones we used to get in our Hallowe’en bags. She’s very pretty, but her lips dominate her face.

  27. lisa says:

    @olivia

maybe Brad and Angie have their money in order. They don’t seem to be hurting in the least.

    Charlie and the Chocolate factor
    Troy

were huge money makers. Plus Brad is smart and gets backend deals on his films. Mr and Mrs. Smith/Basterds.. just because you don’t know squat doesn’t mean others don’t

beside the most Producers are not in it for the money.

YOUR comment was quit disgusting. I guess you are one of those people still pissed 7 years later that he and Angie are still together. It really is kind of fun to read the melt down. Wonder what the FF and IUC nutcases will do without the Brange.. I hope 911 stays alert. They are all going to go insane.. Wait they already are.

I guess time for you and the others to get a life.

  28. Nancy C. says:

he’s really not a bad guy. but being with angie and a litter of kids is just too dumb for my taste.

  29. Canuck says:

Oh no! Say it’s not so! Whatever shall we do? Hehehe

  30. Courtney says:

brad is unlikely to win the oscar for moneyball sports movies don’t win oscars the last person to win an oscar for acting in a sports movie was Anne Revere in 1946 when she won best supporting actress for National Velvet opposite Elizabeth Taylor same goes for horror movies and comedys the only two actresses to be oscar nominated for work in horror moives were Linda Blair for the exorcist and Piper Laurie for Carrie Brad retiring at 40 isn’t gonna happen he’s blowing more hot air

  31. mln76 says:

Producers in general make more money than actors and have more predictable hours-it’s a smart move. He’s not going to do the Tom Cruise route of struggling to stay relevant and making a total arse out himself.

  32. Cheyenne says:

Poor bitter Olivia, Brad’s already made his studio richer by $5.4 billion. And he loves the “concubine”. Go choke on that.

  33. Green_Eyes says:

@Linnie..just ignore @ Olivia.. She’s definitely one of those hate to he grave Ang& Brad cuz he and Jen split. You would think Brad left her for Ang the way she spews crap on Brad or Ang feeds. Most of us ignore her…she must be miserable in her own life to hold such a grudge, especially since she was neither physically or emotionally involved. Hope one day she finds happiness so like Jen, Olivia can move on.

  34. Pyewacket says:

@Courtney- Actually you are wrong, the last person to win an Oscar in a sports movie was Cuba Gooding Jr for Jerry Maguire. If you recall Jerry Maguire was about a sports agent and Cuba Gooding was a football player.

  35. bellebeesting says:

I haven’t seen a film he is in for so long that, as far as I’m concerned, he already “quit”.

  36. bellebeesting says:

And slightly off topic, WTH is wrong with Angelina’s face in that photo? Is she sick?

  37. Bermuda Blues says:

I don’t want him to quit. He’s one of the few actors I will go to a movie for. Really its just Brad, Christian Bale, and Daniel Day-Lewis.

    Don’t quit us Brad!

  38. toto says:

bad news , i hope not ..i trust n like his movies …

    he did great in moneyball/

his opening film this year was much better than johnny 5 m or Leo 11m or clooney 14m..
and im talking about real actors who were acting real persons .

so beside critical acclaim he did also good in box office and even better than his college in the same movie category.

to me he is much much better actor than Angelina, assassination of Jessie James…, for god sake was brilliant

  39. ladybert62 says:

    What he isnt 50 yet?

Look at that mess of a man – he looks like he is 60 going on 70. He also looks like a homeless bum who stinks and pees and pukes in the public street.

  40. jen says:

    Thank God for small favors.

  41. kikay says:

If Brad Pitt quit acting in 3 years ,i don’t think a lot of people will missed his acting, except those people still hung up on Pitts unwashed wrinkly dong. His acting is mediocre at best,in all of his movies,no matter how pissed or sad hes supposed to be,he’s still freaking smiling or smirking, the look on his face is either he wants to have sex with you ,or he just finish having sex and had a good orgasm, hence the smirk on his face all the time.He can never be Leonardo Di Carpio in acting department,,so he can just forget about dreaming about the oscar,it’s not gonna happen. And don’t hit me with the bullshit about Angie vs Ansiton fans crap,i dont like those women.

  42. poopie says:

Why does he think we care ?
he did have a cute butt in thelma & louise though; just sayin’

  43. mln76 says:

People talk about how no one will miss Brad’s acting and how bad it is. But Brad’s last few movies have all been critical successes. Moneyball is the highest rated film of his entire career according to Rotten Tomatoes.Sounds like sour grapes.

  44. Canuck says:

Wasn’t the movie that Bullock won an Oscar for a sports movie?

And is Moneyball still even getting any awards buzz?

Jean Dujardin is going to win Best Actor anyways. There isn’t a single one of the other candidates who could pull off doing a silent film and still make you understand everything they are thinking and feeling.

  45. tracking says:

Please let this be true. Mainly because I’m sick of hearing both of them yap about it.

  46. logan says:

Okay Brad, thanks for the heads up. I will probably quit working when I’m about 70-72. Maybe longer if I can drag my tired ole butt there. I will be sure and give YOU the heads up when it happens though.

  47. Julia says:

Brad is in all lists as frontrunner for the Oscar for both Tree of Life and Moneyball. Clooney too.

I just want him to keep on producing cause he has great instinct to find great mature scripts that are lacking in Hollywood.

I rather him fade away with grace behind the camera than holding on desperatly like De Niro (Little Fokers) or lately Al Pacino (Jack & Jill) who don’t hesitate tarnishing their reputation and iconic legacy for such trashy movies, caving in the Hollywood machine which today cater for the lowest common denominator.

I find this pathetic for such high profile iconic actors and I definitely can see people like Depp and Cruise do the same as they get older. Not Brad, nor Clooney nor Damon.

And yes, The Other Side was a baseball dramatic movie and got Sandra an Oscar for a leading role.

And I also like the fact that him going away, will put an end to Aniston association. She will be on her own and won’t be able to play that pity card anymore and will be judged on her own merit so to speak.

  48. Cheyenne says:

@ladybert: Dang, who shat in your Froot Loops?

It’s seven years, honey. Time you let go the hate and moved on already. Whoever dumped you, his name wasn’t Brad Pitt.

  49. hammer says:

I agree that Brad is about as articulate as a box of rocks. He’s more the type that should be seen and not heard. But he must put out these little nibbles for Oscar bait, you know? He’s a player like every other famewhore.
He doesn’t draw me to a film, either. In fact, the only Brad film I’ve seen in the theater is Basterds.

  50. LeeLoo says:

I’m not surprised. I hope it’s true and not a desperate attempt to get an Oscar. I’d rather he go out gracefully than clinging to what he has as an old man. I think him and Angie have been smart with their money so I doubt they will be hurting.

I cannot believe there are still people who rag on him for what happened between him and Jennifer Aniston. That happened what almost a decade ago?! They didn’t even have kids for crying out loud. It was a failed marriage and yes, Brad did not handle the breakup well but it was 7 F***ING YEARS AGO!!! I don’t know why people need to bring it up everytime he has an article.

  51. foozy says:

OH NO!!!!! hope he doesn’t quit!

  52. Turd Fergussen says:

Brad: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

  53. Canuck says:

    Hmmm http://sports.williamhill.com/bet/en-gb/search/?ShowOcNames=0&sCriteria=Oscars

The UK bookies seems to think that Clooney, Oldman, Dujardin have a better chance of winning, and that Fassbender has an equal chance to Pitt.

  54. Ha ha says:

He is one of the few actors that could still get leading roles for the rest of his life . 50 seems to be a death sentence for male sex symbols . He is much more than that . I hope he gets bored so we can see him play cranky old rednecks .

  55. Original Chloe ) says:

    Nah, he wont 🙂

    Also:
Go ahead and yell at me, but I think as the years go on, Brad Pitt has become a fine actor.

Pitt is definitely one of the best actors of his generation and I’m sure the older her gets, the more he’ll shine. I’d be willing to bet he’ll get at least one Oscar in the coming decade. (Not that Oscars are always awarded to the deserving actors – if they were, Streep would be getting one every year by default).

  56. F5 says:

    Yeah right.. and I’m Cher

  57. tapioca says:

“Brad did not handle the breakup well but it was 7 F***ING YEARS AGO!!!”

I think you might have missed the big interview from only a couple of months ago in which he himself brought it up. Then back-tracked madly when he was criticised for it.

Anyway, Jean Dujardin or Gary Oldman will win the Oscar, depending on whether they choose to go indie or populist this year!

  58. Canuck says:

@tapioca: I’m seriously cheering for Dujardin. It’s difficult though, since I really like Clooney and Oldman as well. It’s a good thing Jean Reno isn’t in there or I’d be seriously conflicted come Feb.

  59. yep says:

I know this site is madly in lurv with Pitt but there is no way you can call him underrated. He gets his butt kissed and everyone thinks hes a good actor. I’m in the minority… the guy sucks. He never even changes his mannerisms for different characters.

  60. kieslwoski says:

He is really shameless in his Oscar campaigning (I guess we will have a reapeat of the Benjamin Button type OScar campaign). Oh and I am sorry but he sucks as an actor.

  61. Seal Team 6 says:

    @Olivia

And who, pray tell, is his “concubine”? His partner, and the mother of his children? Who have mutually agreed not to marry until there is marriage equality in the US?

    Vile comment.

  62. Seal Team 6 says:

    @Courtney

“Chariots of Fire,” “Jerry Maguire,” the “Blind Side,” “Million Dollar Baby”…. I think I’m missing some.

  63. pamela says:

Oh boy if Brad wins the BA Oscar there WILL be a lot of exploding heads. LOL.

And tapioca, Brad talked about his state of mind during his marriage, as he has a right to. It was after all HIS MARRIAGE, and everyone else had been talking and speculating about it over the years …except him. That was the ONLY time he did reference his marriage. His ex on the other hand had constantly talked about and alluded to the marriage. Hell even in her last interview she referenced it.

  64. imelda says:

No offense because not everything he’s worked on requires good looks but dayum he’s lookin rough.
Only one of his movies I really LOVED his performance in and that was Burn Before Reading. I thought he was brilliant in that. Not one of the obvious choices I know but….
Dont think I’ll miss him too much if this is not a cynical ploy as mentioned for an oscar.
When you hire Brad Pitt it is very hard to ignore all the tabloit fodder that is part of his persona and it is difficult to seperate that from any character he’s portraying in a movie. Thats the problem I’ve always had.
I know too much about his private life to put that aside when he’s on screen that or else he’s just not good enough to make me forget about it.

  65. pwal says:

Personally, I hope that it’s not true because, as many have stated, the dude is making some fantastic choices. And I have to admit, I look forward to his movies, and this is coming from someone who didn’t follow him until Fight Club.

Myself, I think he is only saying this because when his resume consists of smaller roles, he has set the precedent that this circumstance was his choice and no one else. And frankly, I don’t want him to go the way of Michael Douglas who did receive a lot of hype in the 90s for doing ‘edgy’ flicks like Basic Instinct and Disclosure, which were, IMO, vanity projects designed to bolster MD’s ego about his desirability (AS IF Demi Moore would risk a lucrative career on his smarmy @$$). I don’t think Brad needs that kind of validation, especially since he’s indicated that the attention was, at times, a hindrance.

  66. Beatrice says:

Why shouldn’t Brad Pitt have an Oscar? Adrien Brody has one. And his body of work (thus far) is not nearly as impressive as Brad’s…

  67. Canuck says:

@Seal Team: I don’t know why you would call that vile, it describes their situation exactly. Definition of Concubinage : The relationship of two persons who are living together without the benefit of marriage.

  68. Bubulle says:

    Let’s see :

George Clooney : ” I Contemplated Suicide After Stunt Accident Injury”

Brad Pitt : ” I will quit acting in three years ”

Yeah awards season has officially begun.

    Who’s next ?

  69. midnightmoon says:

not a moment too soon. and let angie quit at the same time. imho, they are both wasting screen time. and are playing the publicity game a little too well. i am just sick of them both. ewww.

  70. Canuck says:

@Beatrice: it has nothing to do with your body of work, it has to do with your competition that year. That’s why they hand out the honourary “lifetime acheivement” ones, because people can have a solid body of work spanning decades but have never won.

  71. Lee says:

Brad has at least established his legacy by appearing in films made by some of the most respected directors of his generation (i.e. Malick, Tarantino, Fincher, etc.) Even if some of those films fall short of “classic” status, the fact that they were made by our most acclaimed auteurs ensures that Pitt’s work will be seen & remembered long after he’s gone.

Though I wish Angelina would do likewise. I enjoyed Gia & Girl, Interrupted, but I really can’t imagine those movies being watched & discussed 50 years from now – personally, I think the only extraordinary thing about those movies were her performances. Think of old Hollywood actresses like Kim Novak & Janet Leigh – they weren’t the most amazing actresses in the world, nor were their public personas all that memorable, but at least some of their artistic output will always be remembered & discussed because they both starred in at least one great film (Vertigo & Psycho, respectively).

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Place in the Sun, etc. are why Liz Taylor will be remembered as an artist, rather than just as a great beauty and celebrity. Which is why I’d like Angelina to appear in at least one truly great film before she retires.

  72. danielle says:

Yawn. All these actors who are all “love me and see me now, I’m quitting soon!” What-ever. They’ll only quit if they quit getting paid.

  74. Anon says:

People say a lot of things when the BIG 5-0 is looming ahead. Notice he’s thinking about making a change in his career choices. And possibly adding to his family. Brad always did say 6 or 7 kids, didn’t he? I hope he keeps making movies and continues his work helping people that need it…(along with his family members). They have done great things, have good ideas.
Brad’s acting and producing over the years just keeps improving, imho. Hope he stays to give us all more, same for Angie.

Actually, back in 2007 (when he wasn’t in award contention), he said that his years in film were numbered on Charlie Rose.

  76. Angelina says:

Hey Brad you should retire today. Nobody cares! You will NOT win the Oscar anyway. Never. So STFU and go away you poor old man.

i hope brad do not stop altogether, maybe not leading man, although i think he could pull it off, i enjoy watching and being pleasantly surprised by all of his movies, like someone else said, i trust him, brad seems very much in demand, he is not fighting to get roles, he is turning roles down, if you don’t want to watch him, don’t, it’s very simple, as you can see, even after 7 yrs. it has not hurt him, made him better,i will miss him, he has quality work under his belt, sour grapes indeed, i say, if that talentless ex, with her many real, and fake romances, shallow ex, who can’t even open a movie without gimmicks haven’t stopped, every one should keep going, yeah!! i said it.

  78. Charlottean says:

So Canuck this means that Aniston and Theroux are also living in concubinage, right?

  81. ambergesa says:

The concubine comment really was vile and NOT appropriate in their case as it is somewhat derogatory to the woman insinuating that she isn’t worthy of marriage as she is somehow far below her lover socially/ economically and doesn’t “deserve” the honor of marriage. Which patently doesn’t apply in this case, get a life.

  82. blonde on the dock says:

    Wow! Brad is looking rough.
He won’t win for Moneyball. It was an ok movie but not Oscar worthy. These two are so over-rated as actors. They are more well known for their personal lives.

  83. Canuck says:

@pamela: Yes it does, look up the definition for yourself. In fact Louisiana recognizes it legally, as does France.

  84. Lee says:

pwal: Don’t forget Fatal Attraction. I don’t believe Glenn Close would step on an ant to get Michael Douglas’s attention, much less boil a rabbit. It’s weird how for a while he only seemed to do these “male paranoia” thrillers whose main moral seemed to be “Beware of sexy single women! Those nymphos will destroy you with their sociopathic vagendas.”

  85. Cheyenne says:

ambergesa: [concubine] is somewhat derogatory to the woman insinuating that she isn’t worthy of marriage as she is somehow far below her lover socially/ economically
    ==============================================

Well in the Aniston/Theroux shack-up, that would make Theroux the concubine, wouldn’t it?

    😆

  86. Canuck says:

@ambergesa: before you get all huffy, maybe you should look up the definition of what it means, rather than reacting on what you think it means.

  87. sandy#1 says:

i try not to be so petty like some posters, in regards to these 3, but it is just silly, no matter how successful jolie/pitt is, and they are in every important thing they do, not just movies, family, charities, directing, producing, etc. all the ex ever done in the past 7 yrs, was switched men by her side, that’s what making everyone so angry, brad was right to improve his life, why not get man at, vince v. john mayers and thousands of other leaked romances? every co-star shes ever did a movie with, move on already, was brad really the best she could get?, oh yeah, he was.

  88. Cerulean says:

I think it would be a smart thing to do. Maybe take on a few small interesting parts but slow down. Enjoy life.

They really inspire some strong feelings. I think some people are channeling their own bad relationships onto them. If your man cheated with someone younger or prettier, blame YOUR man. Stop projecting onto these two. It’s sad.

Concubine. No matter the definition it is usually used in derogatory terms. Let’s be real about your intention. It was meant as an insult. Not a term of endearment or fact.

For me I’m a little over them. I like them ok but am not always a fan of some of their movies. I wish Angie would make edgier choices. I like his career much better right now. If her movie ends up good, she may win me back. I just think she needs to eat more and look healthier. She used to look thin but sexy. Now she is like a stick with lips and boobs. I would not want to see those legs in shorts.

    *******************************************

Should I start a countdown to exploding Brangeloonie heads? Didn’t he also start to give these vague, but loaded in hindsight, hints in the latter years of his union with Aniston?

Someone needs to alert Angie that she needs to stop talking him up so much in her interviews, cause he is making her look foolish with her “everything is blissfully copacetic” pronouncements.

  91. Julia says:

    @ Zara

Jolie is not Aniston. I am pretty sure she could care less about how people think he makes her look considering all the nastiness thrown at her on a constant basis that she brushes off like a queen.

She strikes me as a real mature woman who knows her man and doesn’t need any validation of anyone to trust him or to make her own opinions and decisions.

She doesn’t need to issue statement or warn her betterhalf to shut his trapor control his comments because it may look like an insult towards her through the eyes of some random stranger…That childish behaviour is for the likes of insecure controlling women like Aniston who always like to live controlling her image even if it requires trying to shut other people’s trap and through constant validation of other people’s opinions making sure her image is not scattered.

  92. spinner says:

I loved Brad in A River Runs Through it. He did a wonderful job with that role. His other movies were less than memorable for me & I am not sure why. He seems to be a contemplative person with depth but it seems he has a hard time translating that to film. I don’t think he will call it quits at 50.

  93. Cheyenne says:

@zara: Read the last sentence of that statement: “Being at peace is more of a goal for myself”.

Most people Brad’s age and over, men and women, realize that being happy all the time is an impossibility. Happiness comes and goes with your moods and your immediate situation. It’s a temporary state. Sometimes you’re happy and sometimes you’re not. Expecting to be happy all the time is a sure way to start feeling depressed because you think something’s wrong with you. What Brad is talking about is contentment, which is very different from being happy, but is much deeper and more lasting. I think he feels he’s found contentment with Angie and their children.

  94. Sandra says:

Retiring at 50, with presumably another 40 years to live, is crazy for most people. For these guys, with their school of children and beyond extravagant lifestyle, I doubt they’d be able to stay in retirement long.

  95. Ambergesa says:

Canuck I did to be sure look it up yourself the impediment to marriage is that the woman hold a vastly inferior status disqualifying her for marriage which regardless of how you feel about them does not apply and is therefore incorrect

  96. NM9005 says:

    @Julia:

AS IF Jolie doesn’t care about her image. That woman is one of the most famous women in the world and you think she just sits back and let it just happen? Holy crap, how gullible are people nowadays?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/21/business/media/21angelina.html?scp=8&sq=angelina%20jolie&st=cse

In the old times (Katharine Hepburn e.g.) there were only newspapers etc. to build your image on and even then it was carefully planned and staged. Kate Hepburn is legendary for being different but after reading biographies (that weren’t influenced by her), you quickly notice how manufactured she was.
Source: Katherine Hepburn by William J. Mann

You don’t go from two failed crazy ass marriages, liplocking your brother, cutting and drugs…to doting mother of six with your A-list partner overnight. That shit was tightly planned and I would love to live to see the day when they are going to be biographies from people who really know what went on in her life. I even think she is as anal retentive and dramatic about her image as Madonna is. The venturing in directing is a signal she knows she has to branch out to stay relevant in a business that shuns aging women. Soon, she won’t be able to play an action stars so she probably is going to go more into directing or “smart films”. She is a smart tough cookie and she is going to fight to death to keep this level of fame up.

And what about the times she dissed Ryan Seacrest?

Oh but she don’t care no, she cool like that =D. No they don’t read anything what’s written about them…they make other people do that =). It’s all pretend in that world, not saying anything about their love, children or charity but the image is controlled.Puh-lease. It has to. As if Oprah, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna Johnny Depp don’t have image control either. If you have power and money, you have to control the image you put out there, it’s your moneymaker and keeper.

    About the word “concubine.”

    In my dictionary:

1.chiefly historical (in polygamous societies) – a woman who lives with a man but has lower status than his wife or wives.
    2.archaic – a mistress.

    1. Brad doesn’t have a wife.
    2. This would be the right word to describe Jolie.

It’s my opinion that it’s she who is reluctant to tie the knot.
She has said that she’s not good at being a wife. I think she’s happy the way things are. She has everything except for that piece of paper, which she had twice before. I think they’ll marry if SHE wants it.

@Lee, #71 … “Though I wish Angelina would do likewise. I enjoyed Gia & Girl, Interrupted, but I really can’t imagine those movies being watched & discussed 50 years from now – personally, I think the only extraordinary thing about those movies were her performances. Think of old Hollywood actresses like Kim Novak & Janet Leigh – they weren’t the most amazing actresses in the world, nor were their public personas all that memorable, but at least some of their artistic output will always be remembered & discussed because they both starred in at least one great film (Vertigo & Psycho, respectively).”
    _______________

I don’t know. As time passes, and in retrospect from the year 2061, I believe people will give credit and attention to “Changeling” and “The Good Shepherd.” I think Angie gave a stellar performance in “The Good Shepherd” with Matt Damon, and the political topic (the creation of the C.I.A.) will be of interest in the future as well.

  105. zara says:

@ NM9005 And what about the times she dissed Ryan Seacrest?

I watched the 2009 GG arrivals and from what I remember, the media were camped on platforms along the red carpet. If a celebrity wanted to be interviewed by a certain media outlet, they would go to their little hub. Ryan Seacrest left his post, scurried down the steps and chased down the red carpet after them. And if memory serves me correctly, Brad was closest to him as he stood there calling out BOTH their names, not just Angelina. But she as usual unfairly bears the brunt of the criticism.

For the 2007 GG, she was not nominated; she was there as the significant other of a nominee. She probably thought he should get the attention, not her. She wasn’t rude to Seacrest, she answered all his inane questions. Maybe he thought she should have followed up his question about what they ate for breakfast with a pirouette or something after she answered it.

As for this bit of nonsense “You don’t go from two failed crazy ass marriages, liplocking your brother, cutting and drugs…to doting mother of six with your A-list partner overnight.”

Angelina grew up, matured and evolved. Same as what Drew Barrymore did as well. The cutting and drugs were symptoms of unaddressed emotional issues. If she got help for those issues in the intervening years, why would you expect her to remain in the same space she was when she was battling those problems?

From what I can determine from her interviews and the book she wrote, she cleaned up her act starting in late 2000 or early 2001. Ten years is certainly not an overnight transformation. I don’t blame her one bit for controlling her image when most in the media want to belittle and malign her at every turn.

  106. Canuck says:

    @Freya: Yes, thank you.
    http://definitions.uslegal.com/c/concubine/
Legally speaking: Concubine refers to a woman who lives with a man to whom she is not married. A concubine is wife without title. When a man and a woman live permanently as husband and wife without the benefit of marriage, the woman gets the status of a concubine. Although a concubine serves the functions of a legal wife, she does not enjoy any rights in a family or any spiritual comforts. A concubine is denied certain legal protections

    ___________________

You meant to say “This would ‘not’ be the right word to describe Jolie,” didn’t you? Unless you’re one of the people (yes, there are some) who still think that Brad is married to Jennifer Aniston?

The dictionary implies that a ‘concubine’ is a woman connected to a married man, which is the only reason she would have a lower status than his wive or wives. So how in the world would this be the right word to describe Angelina?

Brad ‘has’ no wive. Therefore, Angelina is neither his mistress ‘nor’ his concubine. If Brad were married and had Angelina and the kids on the side, ‘then’ she would be his mistress and/or his concubine.

  108. Freya says:

    @90

zara, he is right. I’m not happy ALL the time, are you? Are you happy all day, every day, all week, all month, all year…?

Does anyone really expect Pitt to give up his family to go (back) to a life of wine, women and song, like Clooney?

In a recent video I remember him describing himself as the manager of his family. He’d miss managing his family if he left. lol

Nobody knows the future. Just leave them alone. It’s amusing to see haters wanting, wishing, hoping for them to split.
Every time we see them together on the red carpet, it’s amusing to see haters analyzing the pictures and becoming body language experts.

Jolie and Pitt will be together for as long as THEY want to be together. I just wish the Jolie-Pitt family the best.

  109. dede says:

#1 concubine (historical), if the man has a wife or wives.
    #2 mistress (archaic)

    That’s right, Brad doesn’t have a wife.
I meant mistress (#2) is the word to describe Jolie, if people want to call her something.
If Brad had a wife, then you can call her concubine (#1).

    So, bitter olivia is wrong!

  112. dede says:

forgot to add you all really need to go back to school or learn comprehension skills..angelina is WAY on Brads level maybe even higher..as an actress she has 7 major awards(1 Oscar, 3 GG. 2SAGs 1 NBR.) She can carry a movie to almost 300mil with her name alone and she is respected by high class ppl i.e dignitaries and world leaders..she has ppl like Colin Powell Hilary C and Sachs screaming her praises yet you want us to believe she is not on Brads level..please..no disrespect to Brad but Angie has accomplished more than Brad and shes only 36

  113. Emma says:

@Canuck, #106 … “Legally speaking: Concubine refers to a woman who lives with a man to whom she is not married. A concubine is wife without title. Although a concubine serves the functions of a legal wife, she does not enjoy any rights in a family or any spiritual comforts. A concubine is denied certain legal protections.”
    ___________________

You’re wrong. A concubine is usually one of several (more than one) wives with a lower status or a woman in a relationship with a married man (a mistress). In any event, the man has to be ‘married’ in order to have a concubine or a mistress.

For example, the HBO show “Big Love” about the Mormon with three wives. The first wive is his true legal wife by law, the other two wives would be considered his concubines by this definition, and they definitely had lower status (that was a bone of contention for one of the wives). Make sense? Also, up until the late 19th Century (I think) Chinese men often had concubines. Read the book “The Good Earth” by Pearl Buck for a good look at this aspect of Chinese culture. I believe this occurred in Indian, Japanese, and some Middle Eastern cultures as well.

Sorry to take this particular insult out of your arsenal, but there it is.
    ________________

@Freya, #111 … “Emma, I meant mistress (#2) is the word to describe Jolie, if people want to call her something.
If Brad had a wife, then you can call her concubine (#1).”

(Blinks) Are you serious? A man can’t have a mistress unless he’s married. If he’s not married and living with a woman, then she is his partner, significant other, and otherwise his mate … but certainly ‘not’ his mistress.

I know the propaganda is strong at Ian Haperin and Female First, but come on … really?

  114. Canuck says:

Freya, one does not have to be with a married man in order to be a concubine. You just have to be living with a man as his “wife” without actually being married.

  115. Cheyenne says:

@Emma: Vertigo would be discussed 50 years from now whoever acted in it, and ditto Psycho. The genius was Alfred Hitchcock, not Kim Novak (of all people!) or Janet Leigh.

  116. NM9005 says:

    @zara:

We can discuss this in lenght as I am tempted to do all the time. But frankly, I’m bored with it. So interpret my comment the way you want, I can’t be bothered with it now. I’m hitting the sack.
    So goodnight…

  117. dede says:

so i guess that means Jennifer A is a concubine as well,,her and justin arent married but are living together as well or does that only apply to Jolie

  118. Cheyenne says:

@Canuck: As has already been pointed out to you, and you seem to be too obtuse to grasp it, “concubine” implies the existence of a wife. Brad Pitt has no wife. Therefore, Angie is not his concubine.

If, as you claim, she is his concubine, then Aniston is Theroux’s concubine. Or rather, since he’s living with her and not the other way around, Theroux is Aniston’s concubine. Actually, he’s much more of a concubine than Angie. When all is said and done, a concubine is a kept woman, and Theroux is a kept man.

Want to argue this further and dig yourself in deeper?

  119. Emma says:

    @Canuck, #110 …

This is the definition in ‘my’ dictionary.

“A woman who cohabits with a man to whom she is not legally married, especially one regarded as socially or sexually subservient; mistress.”

Angelina is neither socially nor sexually ‘subservient’ to Brad, and the definition strongly implies ‘a kept woman on the side … a mistress’ to me, or another wive (to whom the man would ‘not’ be legally married), which again is ‘not’ Angelina Jolie. Give it up.

  120. Freya says:

    @106

canuck, exactly what right or spiritual comforts do you think Jolie does not enjoy?
I think the trip to the lawyer/s in early 2010 took care of all that legal stuff. NOTW took it as a sign of an immediate split, and they were wrong.

Btw, have you ever stopped and thought about your reason/s for hating this couple you don’t even know?

  121. dede says:

Thank you Cheyenne..Justin is more of a male concubine then Angie because as I pointed out Angie is at or even Above Brads level..no one on this site cared two shiits about Justin until he got with Jen including you Canuck..but justin will go to an opening of an envelope before he was with Jen A so i can see why he is with her..as i said in the other thread, i give that relationship till their movies comes out..aniston fans always rave about Jens bfs then when they dump her they still think Jen isnt the problem..but i digress

  122. Canuck says:

@Cheyenne: no, sorry but it doesn’t, it simply implies the lack of legal standing between two people who are living together AS IF they were man and wife. Historically even in the polygamous societies which you all seem to be basing your “he needs to be married” suppositions on, men could have concubines BEFORE they actually had wives. Because historically, concubines were reserved for the wealthy. The same wealthy who married for power and politics and so “reserved” the marriage card until it could be played best. I don’t know just how “obtuse” you need to be to not understand how to click on a link that leads to a legal website which provides you with the legal definition of the term in question, or how obtuse you may be to not understand a clearly stated concept. Here, let’s try again, maybe make your font bigger since you still seem to be using those blind as a bat glasses: http://public.findlaw.com/LCsearch.html?entry=Concubinage

  123. Katherine says:

What is all this ridiculous talk about concubines or mistresses? What a bunch of sexist crap. They are partners. Leave all this regressive, sexist labeling where it belongs – in the past.

Geez and these are women posting this insulting nonsense about other women? Once again proving that women are their own worst enemies.

  124. Freya says:

    @113

I agree with you, Emma! Jolie is Pitt’s partner (I’ve always used this word), significan other, better half, the woman he loves, etc. The world is full of couples living together, unmarried.

I just couldn’t believe olivia’s bitter post. It’s obvious she wanted to be offensive, so I looked up the word.
I do remember reading books about Chinese dynasties, with wife #1, then several concubines…

  125. mln76 says:

By every definition concubine is an archaic term used to describe a woman who is owned and controlled like chattel even those who hate Angie must admit she isn’t owned or controlled by anyone.
As for the Seacrest incident sadly the NYT failed to mention that at the Golden Globes Angie was as depressed over her mother who was terminally ill. She only left her mother’s bedside to support Brad.

  126. dede says:

I have question for you canuck..is jen a a concubine as well since they are living as if they are married? if you say no because Jen is of higher status then that means no for angie because her and Brad are on the same status angie is prob higher though

  127. Freya says:

    @119

“Mistress” is just a word, Emma.
The idea of Jolie as subservient to Pitt is the funniest thing! On the contrary…

I think being equals is the best.

  128. Cheyenne says:

    @#122 LOL @ Canuck!

You keep dodging the question. If Angie is a concubine, is Aniston then a concubine also? If she isn’t, why not?

Actually, in that relationship, as I stated before, Justin is the concubine, not her. He’s the one who’s being kept.

They don’t call you Guano for nothing.
    ________________________________________________

@Freya: Nobody knows, but I believe that meeting with the lawyers in 2010 may have been to settle the fine points of the children’s rights, in case anything happens to either Brad or Angie.

Inheritance is murky territory when the parents are not married. It may sound weird, but if a parent dies and leaves no will, a legally adopted child has more inheritance rights under the law than a biological child who was born to unmarried parents.

  129. Canuck says:

Freya: presumably, the “spiritual comforts” would probably either refer to your union being sanctioned by God if you roll that way, as in the eyes of the Church, you would be living in sin and “fornicators”, or possibly the inheritance rights that a wife is guaranteed and that a live in lover is not. Ditto for the division of property in the event of separation. A wife has legal rights that a “concubine” would not. In some countries it would also affect the tax rate you would pay on any inheritence. A concubine would have no right to her partner’s pension in the event of death. And while they may get around some of this with estate planning etc, that’s not relevant to how the law views these different relationship states.

  130. Canuck says:

@dede: I’ve already answered this once in this thread.

  131. Freya says:

    @114

In that case, Canuck, the world is full of them, and you can tell olivia that she has to find another word since she’s desperate to offend.

  132. Chickie Baby says:

Oh, baloney. He’s not going to quit. He says he will, and he might turn 50 and not make any movies for a couple of years, but he’s not going to quit the acting.

The parallels to Redford’s career will continue–ol’ Bob didn’t quit but he did pursue other interests for many years while only making a film here and there, but he’s never been able to totally step away from it.

    Brad’s just being dramatic.

  133. dede says:

Canuck didnt see where you answered the question..how is Angie a concubine and Jen A isnt..they are both in relationships and are living as if they are married..please reiterate because i dont see your response..would really like to see how you justify it

  134. Lee says:

@ Emma: Changeling is probably her best contender for “classic film” status & Clint Eastwood’s oeuvre is respected enough that it will probably be studied 50 years from now. But I still think that her output, especially recently, is below her talent – part of that, however, is that meaty lead roles like the ones Brad has done recently, are just rarer for women.

  135. Freya says:

    @128

Like I said (in #120), they have taken care of all that. They must have. They’re not stupid.

Don’t even talk about “living in sin.” This is 2011, soon to be 2012! OMG, I’m thinking of all the men of the cloth (I think they’re called), abusing little boys. What do you call that?

Now, have you ever stopped and thought about your reason/s for hating this couple you don’t even know?

  136. Camille says:

Brad is still so sexy. Yum.
(I don’t care whether people agree with me or not lol).

And I agree with your first paragraph Kaiser- spot on.

p.s. There really are some crazy people posting on this thread. Wow. LOL

  137. Lee says:

As I read this thread, I’m also wondering if 50 years from now, when I’m sitting in a nursing home watching Changeling on TCM, will some snarling old lady attack me with a bingo board and scream, “Ugh! That man-stealing hussy! And a concubine to boot!”

If I’m watching reruns of that classic old sitcom Friends, will another enraged old woman bean me with her dentures and scream, “Turn that crap off! I always hated that talentless rom-com hack!”

Seriously, when is the rage going to stop?

(Though on the plus side, today I’ve learned a lot about the correct usage of an archaic term for kept, lower-class slut. If I ever time travel to Ancient Rome or Imperial China, I’m sure that knowledge will come in handy. Thanks, Celebitchy!)

  138. Freya says:

    @128

    You’re right, Cheyenne, nobody knows.
The children are the most important, and
Jolie is wealthy in her own right.

  139. Canuck says:

@mln: it really gets tiring when every single time, all we get are US-centric views on things. Concubinage as a legal status exists in a whole bunch of countries as a means to give legal recognition/status to couples who live together but are not married. France, Argentina, Mexico, Sweden, Norway calls it “unmarried cohabitation”, the UK just calls it “cohabitation” and some places call it ” Common law marriage”, it describes EXACTLY the same thing. Two people living together as husband and wife without being legally married.

  140. Canuck says:

@Cheyenne 128 @ I answered the question very clearly, if only you were not too lazy to go looking for the response I gave. Or did your little alarm light in the sky that shines from your bat-recliner give out when I posted that?

@dede133: Ditto to you, how is it that you are “arguing” with an answer that you haven’t even seen and that you have no idea what it was? Completely futile.

In response to the EXACT SAME QUESTION that was asked @80, I responded @83.

Oh and Cheyenne, my radar and sight challenged friend, technically two people living together as man and wife without being married are each other’s concubines.

  141. Canuck says:

@Freya131: Yes it is. And I don’t know Olivia to tell her anything but the term she used is every bit as accurate as “significant other” or “life partner” as is in vogue these days. Probably more accurate as it denotes a) living together b) as man and wife, which isn’t necessarily clear or even necessary from the other two.

  142. Lini says:

He should have won the Oscar for “Fight Club”. No other character he’ll ever play will be as great as Tyler Durden, and no movie he’ll ever make will be as stellar as “Fight Club”.

I do however enjoy his more recent movies a lot too, so this makes me sad. Hopefully it’s not true.

  143. Cheyenne says:

Canuck… Yooo-hoooo…. Are you going to continue to dodge the question?

If Angie is a concubine, what does that make Aniston?

Tell the assembled multitude, Guano, we can hardly wait.

  144. Canuck says:

@Cheyenne143: Sweetheart, ask it again, I’m enjoying watching you make yourself look even more stupid than usual. 140 which directed you to question at 80 and answer at 83. Put down the cooking sherry deary…

And wow! Learn yourself a new word and it’s like a shiny new toy
Isn’t it? I’ll bet you’ve been repeating that to yourself, rolling it around in your head with glee, for weeks. But as I said many moons ago, if you’re so delighted with your new find, it’s all yours. i already knew what it meant, heck, I even knew that in the past it was a valuable commodity that a war was fought over as it is a source of saltpeter. Not that it only refers to one kind of course, but you didn’t know that either, did you?

  145. Cheyenne says:

Oh good Lord, Canuck, who are you kidding? Do you really believe concubine is not a perjorative term as Olivia used it?

You Jenhens would never refer to Angie as Brad’s life partner for the simple reason that you spend every waking minute hoping they will break up.

  146. spinner says:

@ Cheyenne…you do realize that by calling another commenter on this thread, Guano, that you are being totally disrespectful & rude. There really is no need for that. Pull your panties out of that twist & buck up, girl.

  147. Canuck says:

@Cheyenne: do you really think that “living together as man and wife without being legally married” doesn’t describe Brangelina’s status exactly? You have no idea and neither do I, if Olivia isn’t from a country that has a legally recognized “concubinage” or not, and that she might not be using the term because that’s precisely how it is considered wherever she is. And that in the modern sense in all of these countries, it’s not a pejorative term.

Also Cheyenne, I wouldn’t refer to them as “life partners” simply because it’s a pretentious sounding PC way of saying you’re living together. However, I also wouldn’t refer to Jolie as Pitt’s “prostitute” even though when they got together he was vastly more wealthy than she.

  148. Lee says:

According to one of its definitions, concubinage can be correctly used to describe a state of unmarried cohabitation.

However, colloquially, the word “concubine” has basically become synonymous with another one of its dictionary definitions – “kept woman/mistress” – in many countries. If I am in the U.S., UK, Western Europe, or South America, I will call someone a “live-in girlfriend”. Not the French, Spanish, Italian, etc. word for concubine, because I don’t want to get punched in the face.

Would you introduce someone this way? “Hi, this is my boss/my client/my sister. You may have met before – she is X’s concubine”

If not, maybe you should reconsider your position that the term is neutral.

  149. Cheyenne says:

Canuck: “Technically two people living together are each other’s concubines”
    *********************************

    Oh. No. You. Didn’t.

Two people living together CANNOT be “each other’s concubines” since concubinage implies a state of subservience, and therefore inferiority, for the concubine. Two people can live together as equal partners, or in a dominant/subservient relationship, but they cannot be subservient to each other.

Give it up, Canuck. You’re outgunned. Watching you tie yourself up in knots gets wearying after a while.

  150. Cerulean says:

She’s his life partner. Period. The whole concubine comment was dumb. The continuous defense of it is even dumber. Everyone knows what it means. Basically an upjumped whore. She is not. Justin is not(though he is of inferior professional/financial status).

Weird obsession with demeaning their relationship.

  151. LucyOriginal says:

I hope so. He made good choices in the past few years, but he is still a meh actor. I think he keeps saying it just to get a nomination and perhaps the Oscar?

  152. blouson says:

    please do Brad.

  154. Ell says:

Why the need to announce something three years early, none of us actually know what are life will be like in 3 years time. Brad’s over-rated, his looks and good PR have taken him far.

  155. Freya says:

    @141

When a man introduces the lady he is with, it’s always “my wife” or “my fiancee” or “my girlfriend,” never “my concubine” or “my mistress.”

Anyone who uses those last two terms obviously means it as an insult. Other people’s private lives are none of our business!

  156. Freya says:

    @154

He wasn’t exactly announcing it. He answered a question. Have you even seen that 60 Minutes interview?
Nobody knows the future. We all make plans. It’s normal. Right now that’s his plan, but he can also change his mind.

  157. Freya says:

    About winning Oscars.

I went to see “The Reader” because Kate Winslet won for that. Well, meh. You never know. It’s up to the people who vote, and they are not a big group.

  158. Wilma Flintstone says:

Kaiser: He said “producorial,” which IS a word. The Aussie interviewer and/or transcriber probably misunderstood his Oklahoma twang. I’m no lover, but Pitt’s no idiot. He’s very interested in and fairly decently self-educated regarding a number of non-movie topics, including photography and architectural design. He’s a Hollywood power player for a reason. Luckily for a lot of people, he’s a power player with a conscience, which unfortunately seems to be fairly rare in the world these days.

  159. Original Bee says:

I’ve been a fan of Brad’s since his “Legends of the Fall” days, and I agree he’s improved as an actor with age. He’s grown as a human being and is at peace as he said, with his life and that maturity has enriched his acting. I seriously doubt he’s going to quit acting in 3 years. He and Angie both probably want to retire, but if they do leave they’ll be like Michael Jordan, Cher, etc. and be back in the game very quickly.

  160. Kara Ann says:

I firmly believe that Brad is way smarter then most people give him credit for. Just look at how cleanly he has come out re:the Triangle in comparison to Aniston or Jolie. As far as retirement from acting at 50, mmm, IDK, but I seriously doubt it. Lastly, he is certainly big on saying that happiness is overrated or whatever. Has been saying it for years, I think. Perhaps, he’s come to realize that, indeed, as I think Cheyenne commented, none of us are always happy. Having said that, I disagree vehemently that happiness is overrated. It isn’t.

  161. mln76 says:

@Canuck please don’t presume to know what my background is. I have family and ties in and out of the US.

If you are so tired why not take a long nap 🙂

@Cerulean thanks for an awesome post.

  162. Cheyenne says:

@Kara Ann: I think happiness is overrated in that so many people seem to believe that it should be your normal state and if you’re not happy then you must be unhappy. I think most of the time one is in a neutral state, neither happy nor unhappy. Happiness is an emotion but contentment is a state of mind, almost a state of being, and if you’re content with your life, then you have a good life.

  163. CHRISTIAN_GIRL says:

The man can act his behind off, but it is SUBTLE.

Moneyball will shine at the Kodak. Be for real. Wishful thinking of failure was not successful.

Eastwood will have even a harder time selling J EDGAR as opening weekend has proved.

Clooney, again will slip. Ides of March is not doing good and the Descendents will do even worse. He is always fast out the gates, then he’ll step aside.

The Artist will have trouble finding an audience and Moneyball’s boxoffice is screaming BRAD PITT since a baseball movie about stats was thought to be impossible to sell.

Moneyball is doing great domestic and overseas and Tree of Life is NOT forgotten.

Jolie hit hers out of the park as I suspected.

I predict NO WORRIES in the Jolie-Pitts futures. They don’t seem to be workaholics and enjoy spending time with their family, so of course they will slow down. Don’t think for a second that either won’t be missed.

No need to bash the man for wanting to lay up with Jolie and his kids. He only has 1 life and he wants to live it as he sees fit. He is doing his best solid work and he is getting his respect. Everyone in hollywood is not bitter about his divorce. Head honchos love Brad and Angie. They rest with that. Internet chatter has no influence in the real world. Most don’t see it. Their movies get seen and if the work is good, that’s all that matters. As for their film choices since being a couple, they are fantastic.

  164. Lucky Charm says:

OMG, don’t people think anymore?! In order to have either a concubine or a mistress, a man has to be married. A concubine lives in his household with a lower (subservient) status to his wife, and a mistress lives somewhere else and he financially supports her. Neither scenario obviously applies to the Jolie-Pitts. She is his significant other or partner, or common law wife.

And I can see him retiring from leading man times and raising his family, then coming back in 20 or so years in front of the camera in a leading role again.

  165. Freya says:

Charm, I know for a fact that a man doesn’t have to be married for people to say he has a “mistress,” but I have never heard anyone using the word “concubine.”

  166. Nola says:

I think the man sucks and it has nothing to do with him cheating on Jen. In fact I am not an Angelina fan, but I think she could do so much better than this bum. He seems to play into this saint persona in public, but I see evidence of an ego-maniac who wants to be in control always. I just cannot stand him along with his buddy George Clooney. I hope when he retires he takes his ass with him.

  167. Emma says:

    @Freya, #124 and 127 …

Sorry! Once again I jumped ahead in the thread. (Blush) I have *got* to stop doing that. And you’re right. Olivia’s post did bite the big one. 🙂

  168. sammib says:

My god. That man is STILL so hot.

  169. Emma says:

Okay, to keep this on point with the discussion in this thread, I found it while using my search engine to find out how much Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were worth financially in 2005. I ‘did’ find a source stating Brad’s worth, but it happened to be from a cover article of a “People” magazine issue in the “People.com” archives. It is the January 31, 2005 issue of “People” with the cover title “Brad and Jen: Separate Lives.”

Considering all of the false comments about ‘who did what to whom when,’ I thought it might be interesting to post the link here so those interested could read (or in some cases, re-read) what actually happened and was actually said by the three principals and those close to them nearly a month after Jen and Brad announced their separation. I think some posters here may be surprised. (the article extends to the bottom of the page).

  170. 2 Mainstream says:

“I think happiness is overrated. Sometimes you’re happy, sometimes you’re not. There’s too much pressure to be happy. I don’t give a s**t. I know I will be happy sometimes and I won’t be at times. Being at peace is more of a goal for myself.”

    Wow, man, that’s deep. (exhales)

  171. Bite me says:

Emma that people article was an intereting read… Damn shame

  172. kira says:

Canuck: “I don’t know why you would call that vile, it describes their situation exactly. Definition of Concubinage : The relationship of two persons who are living together without the benefit of marriage.”
    ____________________________________

WAIT, you are DEFENDING the use of the word, concubine? This is an archaic term meant as an insult, which nobody uses anymore. It’s the equivalent of calling a woman a whore and you know it. And, you were just on the Aniston thread calling someone else “stuck in the 1950’s”? Seriously, you are stuck in the middle ages for defending that sexist word.

Oh, and if Jolie is a concubine, then so is Aniston. So, you are a fan of one while demeaning the other–BUT, they are both doing exactly the same thing. Seriously, what a hypocrite.

  173. Miranda says:

I’m not a big fan fan of Brangie but Jolie is better actress than Pitt
