Ricky Gervais officially comes back as host of the Globes: how will he do?

wenn3603016

I feel like Ricky Gervais’s performance as host of the last Golden Globes has become much bigger than it really was. He got up there and told some funny jokes, and he told some jokes that made some people uncomfortable, and people seemed to overreact to that in different ways. Some said Ricky was sticking it to the man, some said he was just mean. My favorite comment on Ricky’s performance came from Robert Downey Jr. as he was presenting an award that same night – “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the vibe of the show has been pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?”

Anyway, at the time I felt the push-pull of Ricky’s performance. I’ve always thought he was funny, but I didn’t think the Globes performance was his best night. Everything that came after it, though, made me kind of dislike Ricky. He went overboard defending himself, listing all of the people who said they liked him, repeatedly telling media outlets that he had no plans to come back as host, and that was why he burned the house down (except he didn’t burn it down – he was just playing with matches, that’s all). It just seemed weak, in my opinion, like Ricky cared too much that he was being criticized, like he could dish it out but couldn’t take it, and like he was trying to pretend like all of it didn’t matter, like a kid who takes his toys away and plays by himself in the corner. It was immature, and he seemed petty and small.

So all of Ricky’s claims that he would never come back were BS. He’s coming back for host this year, officially. He confirmed it on his blog:

So it looks like I’m hosting The Golden Globes for a third and definitely final time.

It was a tough decision to be honest. There were many pros and cons. I loved doing it, but I was worried that I couldn’t improve on last year. I’m in LA anyway as I’m launching Life’s Too Short on HBO. But then I didn’t want the Globes to overshadow the series. I knew some people would be uncomfortable with me being host. (This was a pro by the way.)

What actually tipped the balance and made me say yes, was the fact that it would shut up all those f–king idiots who said that I’d never be invited back. Is that the wrong reason to do something? Ha ha. I think it is.

Now here’s the thing. The outrage I caused was of course, as usual, totally out of proportion to the things I said. I don’t think anyone had any right to be offended but they were. This year I’m going to make sure their offence is completely justified. The best thing about it is writing the gags. I love writing one liners. Particularly when they can’t be used in any other context. It gives them a special weight on the night if you know what I mean.

Follow me on Twitter and let me know your favourite targets for the monologue.
I’m enjoying it already.

[From Ricky’s blog]

It will be interesting to see where this performance falls – whether he tries to be nicer, whether he tries to be harsher, or whether he just keeps it off-balance throughout the night. People are saying the Hollywood Foreign Press just hired him back because the controversy will bring in ratings, and maybe more people will tune in, hoping to see him zing some celebrities.

  2. mln76 says:

This ought to be fun.I enjoyed the show and laughed my ass off. EVERYONE in that room can take the razzing. I was sort of annoyed by his whole post-Globes bitchy behavior then I re-watched the Extras finale the other day. The man is a genius. A bit insecure a bit needy but I can’t wait to see what he does next. Especially since we know the Oscars will be boring as hell.

  3. ahoyhoy says:

Celebrities are PEOPLE, and Ricky doesn’t let them forget it.

    I hate schmooz-fests anyway. Ricky’s the BEST!

  4. LucyOriginal says:

Please Ricky: give it all! let the Hollywood sh*t hit the fan! lol

ps: make sure to make fun of George Clooney, if he gets nominated, thanks!

  5. skuddles says:

Excellent! I’m sure he’ll be ten times more ballsy and audacious than last year. All that whining and bitching will only spur him on further. I just love this guy; he’s the only host who hasn’t bored the sh*t out of me 🙂

  6. Anna says:

I find him annoying when he’s not on stage but when he’s on it he’s perfect. I hope he goes harder on them because clearly they’re all afraid of him. Hit em where it hurts! Bruise some egos!

  7. jen says:

Am I the only one that thinks he was hotter when he was tubby?

  8. Tina says:

I might actually watch the Golden Globes this year now.

    Love him!!!

  18. JaneWonderfalls says:

I never catch these award shows, they are long and boring especially the Golden Globes, I have a take it or leave it vibe with Ricky so I hope he does well…he has yet to annoy me so, wish him the best. I will not be tuning in though as I stated above but looking forward to CB coverage on what the celebs are wearing.

  19. wunder says:

There is something so right and yet so wrong about his unbuttoned leather pants on bear skin rug. . .

So right, and so, soooo wrong!!!

  20. DreamyK says:

He was hilarious. And I will be watching the show. Something I had not done consistently in previous years.

  21. Heine says:

I loved Ricky Gervais hosting. Those Hollywood d-bags think they are royalty when really they are just a bunch of people who play pretend for a living and for attention. It’s nice to see someone who isn’t afraid to rag on them.

And yea of course the Hollywood Foreign Press is doing it for attention and ratings. It was clear when the Tourist got nominated last year that they have sold out for ratings (and $-allegedly).

The Golden Globes have always been more fun than the Academy Awards though because the actors get to drink at their tables.

Booze+actors=a good time. Looking forward to the show!

  22. Juliet says:

Go Ricky! Show these Hollywood prats that they are not above criticism or ridicule. If you are gonna be in the limelight, you better learn to have a solid sense of humour.

  23. Carolyn says:

Oh I hope Ricky aims squarely at the Kardashians…but would that give them too much credence? I’d like to see a whole room of Hwood people laughing at barbs at Kim & crew.

  24. Luise says:

Love him. He is so wickedly fun. Can’t wait for The Globes. I don’t watch The Oscars……that’s sooooo boring.

  25. Yessiiirrreee says:

Beware Hollywood: Wear your thick skins under designer wear!

  26. Feebee says:

If he goes on the attack I hope he doesn’t look like he’s trying too hard. I don’t think the HFPA hired him wanting him to tone it down… it’ll be fine line but I’ll be watching.

  27. Newtsgal says:

I have always loved Ricky……that being said does he have to start off every frickin’ sentence with something about ” The Office”. Yes….we get it, you got screwed get over it and just be funny.

  28. UKHels says:

of course they invited him back – no-one outside the US gives a monkeys about the GGs really, he made em famous!

I think he can take the piss out of anyone but he’d better leave fassdong alone heh heh

  29. Jackie says:

his comments are always funny and right on the money, so i will be tuning in for sure. if he was just mean, then i wouldn’t be so excited to support.

  30. Hautie says:

Gervais is hosting a silly awards show… in a room filled full of massive ego’s.

Not one of those massive ego’s are above being mean and petty to people they encounter everyday.

So if he takes a poke at them for laughs… so what. I do not believe for one moment, that he is not aware of who are really awful people in private.

And those are the ones he zings the best.

Looking forward to seeing him host again this year. 🙂

  31. sally says:

It’s strange, he annoys the hell out of me but I still love him. He’s so damn funny. Maybe he is a very VERY mild form of insane Andy Kaufman funny? I don’t know, but I WILL be watching the Golden Globes this year because of him.

  32. mln76 says:

@UKHels no-one outside the US gives a monkeys about the GGs really

No one inside the US care about them either 🙂

  33. gg says:

    oh, ich. Eddie Murphy!

  34. lolaluvsu says:

@jenn…i totally agree. i liked the extra pounds on him.

  35. Bobby the K says:

I hope he makes fun of jennifer a. again.

  36. NM9005 says:

Oh come on, if you invite Gervais to host the show you know it’s not going to be nice. And if you do it a third time then you’re just doing it for the ratings! It’s all about the ratings and the exposure in the end. They all benefit from it (clearly because for all the excuses and backlash he received, they still want him!)

Since when does a show have to be nice? These stars get their ass kissed their entire life when they hit stardom and one bloody night they have to endure jokes at their expense. Boohoo =).
Gervais is golden, without him it wouldn’t be the same. No Gervais on Globes = snorefest. The Globes are nothing without a good host, just a cheap show to showcase fontrum.

  37. Laughing Librarian says:

Excellent-I am so ready to LMAO!

  38. The Bobster says:

Love watching him deflating the celebutard stuffed shirts. Go Ricky.

  39. Jumpie Claps says:

Oh lord, what’s all this whining about celebrities having big egos and being full of themselves? Why should everyone in that room be generalized like that? I don’t believe they are all THAT full of themselves, sheesh. The thing about Ricky is, if he’s going to dish it out, he should very well be able to take it. THAT’S what would be fun about it. Why should Ricky have all the fun? I agree with Kaiser, I liked how Robert zinged him back. Besides, if Ricky makes it so unpleasant that people start not giving a **** about it and quit attending, the show would waste away to nothing. I don’t think the powers that be want that. Personally, a part of me thinks they’re all in on it. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least. A lot of celebrities have senses of humor and are a bit self-depricating. Hello, Jude and Robert at the Oscars? They were the funniest ones there.

  40. Ally says:

He constantly swings back and forth between:

    I’m just a regular fellow/Isn’t fame ridiculous?

    and:

    I’m dying to be a Star/be a Hollywood player.

    It’s schizo, desperate & sad.

All the American Gervais-Merchant movies sucked hard, btw. They were like Polish TV remaking Capra movies or something. Lo-fi & lame. (And I loves me some Jimmy Stewart, so if it had been done well, I would have loved it.)

  41. taylor says:

    Yay!

And no, @jen (#7), I’m with you: I think he looked cuter/hotter when he was a little heavier. Weird, right?

  42. wunder says:

    @taylor
    @jen

You two love a tubby ‘King of Mean’, but you say NOTHING about his pleather pants???

  43. lisa says:

Ricky is the guy that is pressing his nose against the glass. He is successful, but not in the league as the people honored at these shows. It is clear that he wants to be them

He is in an awkward position. Will he go farther or will he toe the line If he goes too far believe it or not he will turn off even the people behind him. If he does not go harder then he will be called a P**** and accused of selling out.

Look Celebrity is one thing, but awards shows have been around forever. Why people act as if today’s stars are any different than the ones before. MOst of them do their jobs and like it or not it pays better then ours and that’s the fact. The GG is not a roast. And I don’t find attacking people for going to a show as funny or OK.

Just because they are celebrities does not mean they should be subjected to mean humor. Take a few swipes fine. but hitting below the belt. Well this is not the place for it. And if some people here don’t like the awards..then do watch them. Ricky is becoming big headed and full of himself. Same slam he threw at others. I don’t know if he reaped a lot from the spot last time. OH wait he was being talked about in the press and was interviewed on those entertainment shows. Must have been a big EGO builder. Because before the GG I don’t think anyone cared about what he said. And they sure didn’t run to see his movies. It will be interesting to see if he can live up to or down to all the hype. I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed.

  44. Callumna says:

Oh Lord, he’s now threatening/promising to be worse than last year! Yay.

The whole “I have to show up because I want my Golden Globe but ooh Gervais is gonna be mean” push-pull on their mugs could be funny as hell. If I see uncomfortable diamond dripping narcissists I will even dig in for the whole night. This could be the Superbowl of stargazing.

  45. NM9005 says:

He’s a comedian first. He’s there to push buttons and to make people think through sniping humour.

He made lots of stand-up comedy routines, Extras and the Office (uhm, yes the original Office not the ripp-off from America so he wasn’t that unknown/unfamous) are critically acclaimed and very popular with the public too. The Brits love him and the celebs too (look at all the legendary actors who had a guest role in Extras!).

If celebs were really against him than they would pull a few strings and he’d be out. You don’t think that Hollywood director Scorsese wouldn’t be able to do that??? Or Paul friggin’ McCartney??? Sure, let’s pretend that the celebs are really hurt and that their egos are damaged instead of them picturing laughing it off while sipping their Dom Perigon and eating Beluga caviar in their multi-million dollar mansions…

I bet those celebs are eating it up just like we do. As if they are not used to embarassement and “sinister undertones”.

  46. beanie says:

LOL!! I don’t usually watch these things..but i wlll now..I hope he give it his all..if he is censored i will be disappointed.

  47. gab says:

This is the only way I’d ever watch one of these circle jerks! Go Ricky!

  48. wunder says:

“Just because they are celebrities does not mean they should be subjected to mean humor.”

Of course they should and often!!!

  49. Adrien says:

I used to defend him, but now I’m not sure. But I’d rather watch him than Billy Crystal. And why are they overlooking NPH? Also, there are more funnier British comedians than Ricky.

  50. Eve says:

I love him and can’t wait for this.

Oh and Robert Downey Jr. can kiss my ass — he’s been losing a lot of his cool points with all that “Mel Gibson’s a nice chap, let him work” crap. I hope Gervais mocks him about that too.

  51. RG says:

“Ricky is the guy that is pressing his nose against the glass. He is successful, but not in the league as the people honored at these shows. It is clear that he wants to be them.”

What’s clear is that you have no idea what you’re talking about. Have you seen anything he’s done outside the GGs? Ricky wants to be Brad Pitt about as much as any of us wants a root canal. He loathes those vapid, self-important HW fools, and rightfully mocks them at every turn.
