Rachel McAdams: It’s “great” that Ryan Gosling is a “feminist icon”

Rachel McAdams covers the February issue of Glamour Magazine. I can’t really say that I’m a huge fan of the cover shoot. It’s trying too hard to be “cheeky” and “cute-sexy” I think. Rachel has a natural “cuteness” and a girl-next-door sex appeal, so I don’t know why they had to take her pants off and get her to flash some ass cheek. It’s unseemly! Tut tut. Anyway, Rachel is promoting that sappy-looking The Vow, where she and Channing Tatum are love interests, sort of. Some may think that playing Channing Tatum’s love interest in a sappy girl movie is a career downturn for Rachel. They may be right, but I not on the Channing-bashing bandwagon. He’s a nice, funny, down-to-earth guy who never bad-mouths his early career choices, even when those career choices were “being a stripper in Tampa.” Plus, “Southern accent” doesn’t equal “moron”. Rachel could certainly do worse for a romantic costar. Anyway, you can read her full Glamour Q&A here, and here are some highlights:

Dyeing her hair pink: “I always wanted pink hair. I wanted to do my whole head, but my hairstylist, Robert, was like, “How about we start small?” I absolutely loved it. I still think about doing blue at some point, but I don’t like to change my hair before I’m about to do [a film]—you never know what that character’s going to be.”

Creating a character with clothes: “Yeah, I love those preliminary conversations about who a character is. You try on wigs, shoes and clothes. It’s preferable when it’s not about looking pretty. It can get a little dull to just be cute. We talk about things like, maybe my character can’t afford these Christian Louboutins. [The stylist] will say, “No one will notice.” And I’m like, “Everyone knows that red-bottom shoe!”

She’s silly: “I’m very silly as a person, but quality silliness on-screen has more of an art to it. Harrison Ford, whom I was in Morning Glory with, has mastered that dry funny better than anyone.

Mentors: “Diane Keaton, whom I’ve done two movies with. She’s a very caring and loving person. I love to listen to her stories.”

She worked at McDonald’s for three years: “Yeah, for a good three years. My sister and brother worked there. My sister was my manager! I was 16 and directing kids’ theater, which didn’t totally pay the bills. It was a great place to work, but I had a little bit of an OCD thing with hand washing and just didn’t have time. They were like, “Hey, the drive-through’s backing up. Stop washing your hands!” I was not a great employee; I broke the orange juice machine one day.”

Life outside of Hollywood: “[Paparazzi invasions do] happen, especially around the time a movie’s coming out. But I really like having a life outside work. I sometimes wish I did more career stuff and was in that Hollywood scene a bit more. But Toronto’s my home.”

Dating costars: “A set may seem like a good place for romance, but I don’t think it’s very conducive; it’s too distracting. Every relationship I’ve had with a coworker has come after the fact, because you wind up actually spending a lot of time with those people promoting the movie.”

On The Notebook: “Well, I bawled my eyes out when I got the script. It was a great story and had so much heart. But it was one of the first big things I had done, and I was just focused on getting through it. It was like, great, a job, I’ll take it.”

On Channing Tatum: “I was worried we might not [have great chemistry], because we were more like brother and sister, like buds. Channing is very outgoing, very kind and a lot of fun to work with.”

Her favorite costars: “It’s an embarrassment of riches. I love Owen [Wilson] in Midnight in Paris. He’s so endearing, and it was a completely different kind of relationship from the one we had in Wedding Crashers.”

Crushes on actors: “I loved soap operas when I was young, so Antonio Sabato Jr. and Maurice Benard from General Hospital. And who could forget Josh Brolin in The Goonies?”

GLAMOUR: I’ve heard you don’t read your press. Do you read about other people?
RACHEL MCADAMS: Not really, no.
GLAMOUR: So you’re not aware that Ryan Gosling has become a huge feminist icon?
RACHEL MCADAMS: Feminist icon? Wow! Is that real?
GLAMOUR: There are blogs upon blogs!
RACHEL MCADAMS: Oh my God, that’s great.

I would love to know if Rachel and Ryan Gosling still talk. I would love to know what she really thinks about his Disneyland hookups and his “thing” with Eva Mendes. But hopefully, he’s not even on her radar anymore. I believe that she and Michael Sheen are happy together. And I really do think that there’s a good chance they’ll get married. I know some of you are Sheen-haters, but that man is delicious. I would take him over Gosling any day of the week.

Here’s the trailer for The Vow:

PS… I’d really love for Rachel to give up the blonde. I don’t think it does her any favors. She should do a really soft auburn.

  1. Linn says:

She’s so incredibly beautiful, probably the prettiest Hollywood star!

And even though I think she’s happy with Michael I still REALLY miss her and Ryan together 🙁

  2. carrie says:

why is Ryan Gosling a feminist icon?

her love story with Gosling is so old like the marriage between Aniston and Pitt

She does a nice couple with Michael Sheen

does anyone know her real age? because there is a story on she lies her real age!

  3. LindyLou says:

She looks great in that last photo by the fireplace. I agree they overdid the “sexy-cute” in most of this shoot.

  4. brin says:

I like her with Michael Sheen too, seems like a good match. I also agree about the blonde…you could mistake her for Elizabeth Banks (see other header pic.)
Love your swipe at Rooney Mara (via Channing Tatum’s early career choices)!

    • mssnarnd says:

Completely agree! The blonde should go. The color washes her out and has made her indistinguishable from a lot of other actresses who run in her pack. I like her. I predict her career will pick up again.

  5. GoodCapon says:

    That fireplace photo is superb.

“I know some of you are Sheen-haters”

Why would anybody hate Michael Sheen??

  6. emma says:

Why is Ryan Gosling considered a feminist icon? Is it just like his fans somehow think he’s the Sexiest Man Alive? Ridiculous with no basis in fact?

    • Girl says:

Agreed? Icon? I think that’s far too strong a word. Gloria Steinem, Susan B. Anthony, et al. (though I strongly disagree with many things that GS stands for) those women are icons. An actor whose been on the scene for a several years? Not so much. Maybe I don’t know so much about him and he campaigns against the sex slave trade or discriminatory workplace practices?

      • Gradstudenteatinghotpockets says:

I think it’s more of a joke about him being an icon. There are tumblr sites where people take his photo and put stuff on it…hopefully it lets me post this:
        http://feministryangosling.tumblr.com/

that’s the one for feminist Ryan Gosling. I wouldn’t be too up in arms about it, it’s kind of funny.

  7. Bite me says:

    Rachel is very likeable

  8. Azurea says:

She’s pretty, but leaves me cold, acting-
wise. She almost always seems to “be acting” which is very distracting.

  9. lolworthy says:

I adore her sooooo much. She kinda fizzled out but she’s still an awesomely beautiful actress.
Also why the heck is that douche a feminist icon?

  10. I.want.shoes says:

Ryan Gosling a feminist icon? Why?! Do the people who claim that even know what feminism is? Or is their version of feminism the same as Beyoncé who thinks feminism should be renamed “bootylicious”?

  11. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

    Wow! Her stomach is amazing!

And I too would like to know WHO crowned Gosling a feminist icon?

  12. normades says:

I love her so much but wish she had been more aggressive with her career. She turned down so many A-list projects to search for the edgier ones and this tactic tots backfired. It worked for Gosling because he’s a guy and at 30 he is now hitting his A-list stride. Women peak earlier and she should have worked more in her mid-20’s.

I hate these pictures because they slightly reek of desperation to me. She refused to show any skin when she was younger (like the Tom Ford Vogue cover) and this seems like a “hey I’m still young and cute” holla.

She turned down Devil wears Prada! She should be having Anne Hathaway’s career!!!

    • LeManda says:

Ohh really! She would have been an awesome Catwomen!

    • Nessa says:

She turned down Devil Wears Prada?!? I had no idea. Who turns down an opportunity to work with Meryl Streep?

      • normades says:

        From Elle magazine 2009?

“I’m not going to make movies just to make movies,” McAdams says. (She’s turned down loads of roles, including the romantic leads in Mission Impossible 2 and Casino Royale. Anne Hathaway’s part in the Devil Wears Prada, and Agent 99 in the upcoming Get Smart, starring Steve Carell.)”

  13. Jayna says:

I love her. Cool she lives somewhere else. Sandra Bullock -before her idiot marriage – moves away from LA saying it was unhealthy and changing her. You become too obsessed and narcissistic. That’s when she moved to Austin.

Has anyone seen Midnight in Paris? I was going to rent it but didn’t know if it was good or not.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Midnight in Paris is adorable. Don’t know if you’ve ever been to Paris but if you have, you’ll love it because it’s a total love letter to the city. If you’ve never been to Paris, then this movie will make you want to go 🙂

      • Jayna says:

Thanks. We are going this year. I have always wanted to visit Paris and other parts of France. I will definitely rent this movie for a rainy day movie.

    • Abby says:

Loved Midnight in paris. I totally agree–it’s a love letter to Paris. It’s not about Rachel or Owen or even Marion Cotillard. It’s about loving Paris and its golden age. <3.

      • Azurea says:

I also loved Midnight in Paris, but she is the only weak link in it. As I said previously, you can see her “acting.”

    • lrm says:

Midnight in Paris is one of the best films i’ve seen in YEARS. I will buy the dvd; i saw it twice in theaters. Once with my ten year old son who loved it!

Seriously, it’s a fabulous film. A true romantic comedy in the best sense of the word, and true woody allen in his best form, film wise. Also, it has time travel to the fabulous eras of paris, and modern day paris, and a ridiculously great cast-adrien brody has a brief scene as ‘salvador dali’, carla brunei is a hilarious museum guide[she’s funny], and owen and rachel have great chemistry, along with michael sheen.
I LOVE this movie. I cannot imagine anyone hating it, or even disliking it. There’s nothing offensive about it; it’s endearing.

And, I have never said this about any woman before, but i’d go gay for Rachel McAdams. God, she is so beautiful and sexy to me. She has this strange combination of being accessible, beauty wise, but also completely angelic and sexy, too. And I love her as an actress.

I read that Woody Allen only let Owen read the entire script, and everyone else only knew their part with owen. so you can see how he gets that raw, neurotic response from his actors.

Owen wilson,w hatever you think of him, is just great in MIP, too.

It’s a rather old fashioned film but upbeat and modern, as well. And, it’s only 90 min or so. None of this ridiculous 2 plus hour ‘my movie is so important’ kind of thing.

On another note, just saw morning glory-harrison ford was hilarious and rachel is solid. cute netflix film.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

@lrm-ITA. This was actually the first time that I thought Owen Wilson was perfectly cast-so likeable and he did a great job of playing the naive/sweet American and toning down the classic Allen-neuroses. MIP just showed how good Woody allen can be (a key component for me was that he thankfully did NOT cast himself in the movie) and everything just came together perfectly. As far as McAdams go, I also have a major girl-crush on her. I just hope she continues to do more and doesn’t get trapped in the RomCom vortex of hell.

      • Jaded says:

I agree, I watched it twice on my Xmas break and loved it even more the second time and I thought she was actually pretty good. She’s totally playing against her usual sweet character as an annoying-as-hell, manipulative, pretentious little ritch-bitch who….well I guess I shouldn’t give the plot away. And the scenes of Paris…in the rain….”le sigh”…I spent the most romantic week of my life there, ahhh, good times, good times…

  14. TheOriginalKitten says:

    Kaiser-Sheen over Gosling? This explains a lot…

  15. Lizzy says:

She’s so bland. There’s nothing unique or outstanding in her style, roles or appearance

  16. Franny says:

I love Glamour magazine…I look forward to getting it every month and I look at their website at least 3 times a week.

That being said, who in the right mind thinks that these pictures for the last few issues have been good? You have to try really hard to make Rachel not look good. Last issue with the Kardashians, all the pictures were terrible. It seems like some weird lighting issue plus cheap photoshop.

  17. Jezi says:

I really like her. I loved her and Ryan Gosling as a couple but I’m glad she’s found happiness with Michael Sheen.

  18. Kit says:

She’s so beautiful. I’m really rooting for her and Michael Sheen. I don’t believe she’s lying about her age, she doesn’t seem like the Hollywood game playing type. I also don’t think she wants the kind of fishbowl life that a big Hollywood career would bring.
I honestly can’t imagine Rachel and Ryan dating again, they would be a total mismatch now. Why can’t people let it go?

  19. HadleyB says:

YAWN .. these magazines lately ask the celebs the SAME questions year after year or use old interviews that are old.

We have seen and heard these questions answered before … is it protecting the celeb or are they just lazy? It’s boring. It’s as bad as listening to Ryan Seacreast “interview” a celeb … so controlled.. and boring…

And I find her ..dull. But then again..it is Glamour. They don’t really do cutting edge anything – covers or interviews.

  20. Lisa says:

She’s with Michael Sheen…#WINNING!!!I was drooling over him last night AGAIN in “Underworld”…SIGH…

I have always liked Rachel…and I TOTALLY understand her reluctance to show skin when she was younger…and didn’t have the life experience and confidence that she has now as a mature woman…and now…ALL BETS ARE OFF!!!
I went through the EXACT same thing!

    • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Is michael sheen the one who was married to and has a child with Kate Beckinsale? And didn’t she cheat on him with the director of Underworld?

      • NotaBitterBetty says:

Yep, he’s the one. Len Wiseman is the current husband and director of the Underworld movies. But apparently they’re all very cordial with each other.

  21. Annie says:

I will never say a bad word about her. I met her a few years ago and she’s incredibly sweet. Very down to earth, approachable and seemed genuinely interested in random conversation. I couldn’t believe how nice she was, no air of celebrity attitude whatsoever in her.

  22. NotaBitterBetty says:

I think she’s better off with Sheen too (who really is a wonderful character actor). Gosling was probably far too immature for her in the long run. I liked her with Josh Lucas too. She really should have a better career than she does but I get the feeling she’s not consumed with all things Hollywood anyway so is probably content with her lot. Good for her.

  23. DontRainOnMyPrada says:

Just watched the trailer. Omigod I’m such a sap…it made me cry!!!

  24. Julie says:

I adore her. One of the actresses I wouldn’t mind being like.

  25. Jules says:

She seems very well-adjusted and normal, in addition to being gorgeous.

And WHY is Gosling a feminist icon again??
I like him, but what is that about?

  26. Seal Team 6 says:

Love McAdams — she’s seems like a very intelligent, very normal person, and I also like her acting.

I also really like Gosling, and think he’s one of eh best actors of his generation. He deserved the Academy Award for “Half Nelson.”

  27. Maya says:

Gosling made some comments last year about the fact that Blue Valentine was potentially going to get an NC-17 rating for a scene in which he goes down on Michelle Williams: he basically accused the MPAA of having a sexist double standard when it comes to portraying male vs. female oral sex on screen. (You can read his comments on the Wikipedia page for Blue Valentine.) It was nice to hear a male actor speak out against sexism in the industry (he was definitely right), and maybe that was one of the inspirations for the ‘Feminist Ryan Gosling’ meme? Either way, I’d agree that “icon” is a bit too strong of a word.

  28. Abby says:

I have such a girl crush on Rachel McAdams. She’s my most favorite actress. Paired with that gorgeous hunk of man candy Channing Tatum (Don’t judge) I have already decided I must see The Vow. Must. The only way this movie could be better for me would be if she was paired with Gosling. 🙂

  29. Geekychic says:

I Don’t Get the Gos-obsession, to ne honest. He’s Just to “try” for me persona-wise, and totaly not my type I’m the popis department. But Sheen-he’s something else! :)) rachel’s got a great taste in men, So she gets my love. The fact that she chooses not to live in HW helps the fact.;)

  30. Geekychic says:

I Don’t Get the Gos-obsession, to ne honest. He’s Just to “try” for me persona-wise, and totaly not my type I’m the looks department. But Sheen-he’s something else! :)) rachel’s got a great taste in men, So she gets my love. The fact that she chooses not to live in HW helps!;))

  32. Sasha says:

Oh my god I LOVE her. She’s got that rare gorgeousness where girls would totally want to be her best friend and guys want her to be their girlfriend. That smile is KILLER.

Sheen needs to slam a ring on her finger NOW. What is he waiting for!?

  33. Marissa. says:

I LOVE Rachel McAdams! She’s so sweet and down-to-earth. But I have to agree with you, Kaiser. I don’t like the photoshoot or the concept in general. They keep playing up the “sex kitten” thing and it just seems awkward. Still, she’s great. Hope she and Sheen get married soon.

  34. olivia says:

I love her! I think the fact that she doesn’t live in Hollywood is really awesome. She has no desire to live that kind of life and I appreciate that. I also love Michael Sheen, he’s brilliant. She is a much better match with Michael than Gosling. Gosling isn’t the same guy anymore either. He’s loving his moviestar status, toting around his pantene model girlfriend for the cameras. I don’t think Rachel would want any part of that. I wish her all the best in her career and with Michael 🙂

  35. lrm says:

If any studio or PR people are reading this, I WOULD see a movie just for Rachel McAdams. This is something I don’t do for anyone else-even johnny depp whom i’ve loved for years. [okay, maybe i’d still do it for robert downey jr, but he makes better film choices, IMO].
so, get rachel in more films, stat. and not those cheesy ensemble casts.

gosh, she would have been great in devil wears prada, but i dont know if i would have disliked her like i did Anne, which made for a better movie.
also, rachel would act circles around almost anything natalie portman’s done-give rachel some of her roles, please! And ditto for ‘Scarjo’. We need more Rachel, just a little more, not overkill.

But, hopefully she will have a long and lustrous career like diane keaton and act well into her later years. I think her career will have longevity more than youthful hype.

  36. Jane says:

I luuuvre her so much! She is such a darling.
I agree with Sheen over Gosling. Michael Sheen is hilarious.

  37. Heather M (Heather) says:

Totally disagreeing w/you here about a blonde Rachel (love it) & Sheen over Gosling?! Yuck.

  38. Lindsey G. says:

Ryan Gosling is a feminist icon????

  39. podzol says:

Love her, but The Vow looks vile. Why, Rachel, why? I’ll wait for the Malick one, but that might take years!

  40. ruby says:

Another sweet celeb who seems friendly and down to earth. I prefer her with Sheen too, and I hope it lasts.

And I agree with Kaiser, she looks prettier when she’s not a blonde. A soft shade of chestnut or auburn would be great.

  41. Hip-ster says:

    She worked at McDonalds 😮

  42. Camille says:

I love her, she is adorable and so pretty. I love that she isn’t really into the HW scene either. I like her blonde, but she suits other hair colours too.

That movie with Charming Potato looks awful.

  43. Pureinsanity says:

She was supposed to be Emma Stone, before Emma Stone became Emma Stone. I love Rachel more.

    • Alex says:

Funny those are my favorite 2 Hollywood beauties with talent. We need more of them and less of Megan Fox and those Kardashians.

  44. Riri says:

She is so beautiful and blonde suits her.

I had no idea that RG is a feminist icon. What gives?

He is a great actor, slept with way too many women for my taste, he insinuated drugs usage,

BUT I don’t remember him saying anything for the promotion of women, not even in his own inductry, or even making sure that in his films women are potrayed in a positive progressive manner, sp , I am not sure what is so feminist about him.

    • olivia says:

I know there were some drug rumours floating around about him a few years ago, but I don’t know if they were true or not. Now he’s dating a person with a history of substance abuse. Hmmm. I have no idea how many women he’s been with, but there’s been stories that he was quite the ladies man. He must have some issues, no one is that perfect.

  45. RachelFan says:

HEy, did you guys know that “TheVow” is based on a couple’s true story? That kind of changed any negative opinion that I could have about it, knowing it happened to real people. Anyway, like a lot of people are saying here I would see any movie if it stars Rachel McAdams!

  46. Lilly says:

People think Ryan is a feminist “icon” because of this statement he gave about the reason why his movie Blue Valentine got a NC-17 rating:

You have to question a cinematic culture which preaches artistic expression, and yet would support a decision that is clearly a product of a patriarchy-dominant society, which tries to control how women are depicted on screen. The MPAA is okay supporting scenes that portray women in scenarios of sexual torture and violence for entertainment purposes, but they are trying to force us to look away from a scene that shows a woman in a sexual scenario, which is both complicit and complex. It’s misogynistic in nature to try and control a woman’s sexual presentation of self. I consider this an issue that is bigger than this film. … There is something very distorted about this reality that they’ve created, which is that it is OK to torture women on screen. Any kind of violence towards women in a sexual scenario is fine. But give a woman pleasure? No way. Not a chance. That’s pornography.

I think calling him an icon is stretching it, but i do have a little respect for him over this comment.

  47. Meadowlark says:

Always loved her. And I LOVE those micro-shorts she’s wearing on the cover!
I love the Feminist Ryan Gosling meme. It’s just a joke, guys, he’s not really a feminist icon.

  48. jenny says:

I think her sister and Ryan G’s brother date – something like that. That means she must know what he has been up to.

  49. hetekyle says:

i disagree, i’m a big notebook fan and i think that ryan is only for rachel. :]
