Natalie Portman in hot pink Lanvin at the Globes: gorgeous or too overworked?

Last night at the Golden Globes, Natalie Portman made her first red carpet appearance since giving birth to baby Aleph. Natalie had her boyfriend/lover/fiancé/baby-daddy with her (I don’t know what to call him at this point), Benjamin Millepied. We haven’t seen or heard much about Benjamin in a while – I’ve read some stories about him giving up his New York ballet lifestyle to move to LA with Natalie and pursue a Hollywood career. Whatever is going on with him, his hair has improved a great deal since last year’s awards season, where he appeared to be wearing a series of pompadour wiglets. So… Benjamin looked nice.

As for Natalie, her dress is Lanvin. I know it’s syrupy and she could have easily looked like a walking bottle of Pepto-Bismal, but I kind of like the dress. The hot pink with the red accent on the bust is interesting and flattering to Natalie’s coloring. She wanted to keep it about the dress too, wearing simple earrings, a bracelet and some rings, styled with great makeup and a simple hairstyle. My only problem is the weird one-sided hip-bustle. It was noticeable when Natalie presented Best Actor – it didn’t even look like part of the dress, really. It was like something weird got caught up in the dress, although I’m sure that was just the Lanvin design. It still would have been an interesting dress without the bustle, I’m just sayin’.

Love the shade of the dress, don’t care for the shape though.

  2. kit says:

Don’t care for this dress, not the colour or the design.
I like her, she’s a great actress and she seems like one of the more normal people in that business. And she’s stunning. He’s meh.

  3. Jilli says:

    Handsome couple.

    • DreamyK says:

They don’t look thrilled to be in each others company. I wonder which Blind Vice they fit?

      • MonicaBee says:

I was just thinking that myself. Their body language ain’t saying nothin’ nice, imo.

I also don’t find her nearly as attractive as I did in years past. I am not sure what it is but she’s just not doing anything for me anymore.

      • Mia says:

She used to have a certain charm and prettiness, but it broke for me when I watched her acceptance speeches for Black Swan. Similar to Nicole Kidman, I thought she would be intelligent and elegant but turned out when they open their mouths, it was just childish babble. And yes I know about Natalie’s academic background but that still doesn’t change the fact that as a person, she isn’t too engaging to listen to.

  4. Zimmer says:

    Stunning!

  5. Marianne says:

I hated that random thing poking out of her hip.

  6. Aria says:

Looking really good both of them. She is so overrated as an actress.

  7. Esmom says:

The bustle gave it a weird boxy aspect, otherwise I thought it was pretty. Unusual color combo that works on her. And I liked the understatedness of the rest of the look.

  8. Cilo says:

Pretty overrated actress. Black Swan was stupid.

  9. samira677 says:

The dress seems too average, like I’ve seen it many times before. The hip bustle is to Marie Antoinette for my taste.

  10. Kerfuffles says:

I love Lanvin, but I didn’t think this dress was very representative of the brand. It looked like a (albeit expensive) prom dress. While Emma Stone’s Lanvin dress I thought was amazing. The shoulder detail alone was awesome.

I also thought Portman seemed like a grump when doing her award presentation. But I’m slightly biased…her award speeches for Black Swan made me want to proverbially stick a pen in my face.

  11. ShanKat says:

She reallly likes the pink+red. Me, not so much.

I agree with @Aria, she’s incredibly overrated. If she’d named her baby Americus, I would have changed my mind, though.

Her man has some pretty intense gayface.

    • Tazina says:

I don’t think these two are into each other at all. They’re there; they’re posing dutifully for the cameras but they seem like they wish they were somewhere else, and preferably not with each other.

  12. Kate says:

The dress is just okay other than that red accent detail– I wore a secondhand bridesmaids dress (not Lanvin, mind) to a drunken sorority formal that looked like that, which is not exactly the fashion standard NP aspires to.

Side note: Anybody else think those two will NEVER get married? I’m not sure what they’re waiting for at this point.

    • Samigirl says:

THANK YOU. The first thing I thought when I saw that dress was that it looked like a bridesmaids dress. For a Valentines Day wedding. It’s not terrible, but that’s exactly what it reminds me of.

  13. HadleyB says:

I like the dress, the color the shape but it’s ill fitting on her..

The dress is a classic shape from the 50’s and was even used in Barbie collections when she came out and was reissued later for their vintage reproductions.

I think maybe someone with a bust or more shape to their body would of pulled this off better.

  14. Fallon says:

Nice color, awful construction. Looks like she wrapped a bedsheet around herself, only to realize it had several other items doing the static-cling thing near her hip.

  15. Marjalane says:

I don’t think there’s much these two could do to make me like them. Way too much assy attitude coming off them.

  16. Funnylilou says:

I think she lost her ” wowww” effect, she is still pretty but she used to be jaw dropping beautiful what hapened?

on an other note I though her oscar wasn’t well deserved, black swan was stupid and not really an “incredible acting performance”(unless acting meant moaning, screaming and crying all over with the exact same face!), annett benning in “the kids are all right” on the other hand…

    • Beregorl says:

I have been (or was?) a Portman fan since Leon, I followed her career faithfully, and I liked Black Swan because it was dark, f*cking pretentious, artistic, deliciously crazy with many good actors, but God, I sooo agree with you, the hype around this movie and her performance was way too much.

I do believe BS was her best performance since… well, Leon, she worked hard, she did her best, but I wouldn’t have given her an Oscar for it.

As for her outfit: I like it, and Benjamin was hot.

      • Funnylilou says:

I was a fan too, that’s why I am so disapointed, she is a decent actress she should have waited for a proper oscar now she has fraud written all over her and that is a turn off

    • Snowpea says:

I agree. She used to be this flawless beauty – now not so much.

Her skin is spotty and blotchy, her teeth need a good whitening. She looks tired. Maybe it’s just motherhood?

I dunno, but I give these two twelve months.

  17. Sisi says:

The hip-thingy on the dress reminds me of the Armani Privé dresses that we saw 4-5 years ago… So yeah, I think it looks dated :/

She gets a pass because she was just there for presenting

  18. Shelly says:

It’s hard for Natalie to ever look bad, but I find her a dress a little boring. But then again, she was only presenting, so it was probably a good choice.

  19. Franny says:

The one-sided hip bustle is ridiculous. I feel it was supposed to be a distraction from her “post pregnancy body”, which is fantastic, so no need to detract from it. Its unfortunate, because I usually always like what she’s wearing.

  20. Sarah says:

This dress reminds of my look when I was a little girl and played wrappind drapes around me being a princess : either I am a fashion genius or somebody is fooling us all.
Thankfully for her, with that face, you can wear anything.

  21. Cathy says:

I like the dress, she pulled it off well. I don’t really care for the poofy part on the side though.

To get off subject here, what is with the movie ads at the bottom of the pictures? Is the advertising budget for this John Carter movie so low that they’ve taken to only advertising on celebrity gossip pages?

  22. tracking says:

Pretty, but a little too prom.

  23. Suzy (from Ontario, Canada) says:

Dress overwhelms her like it’s too large or something about the shape doesn’t seem right. Plus her eye makeup is too dark. She can look much better.

  24. Jules says:

I don’t like the side bustle, but she’s always gorgeous.

  25. normades says:

Ugly awkward dress. Color is great, but hate the stiff fabric and folds.

  26. stephanie says:

don’t like the side bustle but love the pink:)

  27. SamiHami says:

The color does flatter her and her hair & make up worked. I agreee about the hip bustle-it didn’t work. Without it she would have been just right.

  28. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

She is a beautiful girl, always classy with her dresses. This particular dress is not too bad, but that pink is too in-your-face bold, IMHO. Agree that the bustle is kind of a pointless feature.

  29. Birdix says:

Benjamin M started a dance company, LA Dance Project –supposed to start touring US and internationally in 2013.
Looks like he doesn’t want to be there and as a result she doesn’t either.

  30. atlantapug says:

Love the top of the dress, hate the bottom.
It looks like a circa early 90’s prom dress.
The color is a little bright, maybe if the entire dress were the more subtle shade along the bust line.
It just isn’t “elegant”, i’m not sure how to explain it, but it doesn’t have that WOW to it.

  31. lucy2 says:

I liked it except for the side bustle too.

  32. Heather M (Heather) says:

What goes on in one’s head when making the decision to wear such a monstrosity? This dress is HORRID. Horrid.

  33. Lini says:

I really like the dress and I think she´s SO beautiful, probably the most gorgeous star in Hollywood.

  34. Ron says:

I loved this look. A fashion forward look at Audrey Hepburn.

  35. kikilo says:

Love the colors of the dress, but that hip hump is gross.
Her makeup was lovely but hair a bit boring. She’s lost all the baby weight too I see.
    I don’t like babydaddy’s bowtie.

  36. TheOriginalVictoria says:

The material looks so cheap. “You’ll love David’s Bridal.” And I do, but not for the awards season.

  37. Julie says:

Wasn’t a fan of the look. Bitchface doesn’t look like she wants to be there. Don’t care for this one.

  38. Mingy says:

    hate it.

  39. Ida says:

Love the dress but she really doesn’t have whatever it takes to pull off such super-structured dramatic clothes. It’s that faux-ingenue/whimsy/romantic hair/makeup/look/image thing that she’s got going on that kills it for me.

  40. Amanda G says:

I’m not a big fan of hers, but I really like that dress. Okay, the hip thing is weird, but I love the colors.

  41. Lindy says:

She’s beautiful, and I think she’s pulling this color off (though yeah, the shape and bustle thing are not working). But I think she’s pretty overrated as an actress. And I’ve been kind of pleased not to see her around so much lately–the Black Swan press/tours burned me out on her.

  42. meme says:

As Michael K would say, “It looks tortured.”

  43. pink giraffe says:

I don’t know why Natalie likes pink so much-didn’t she wear it to the Oscars last year? She wore some tulle-y pink confection to an awards show last year, and the color just doesn’t look all that good on her. And I can’t believe she’s still with that famewhore boyfriend.

  44. Leek says:

She is in need of a high five. To the face. Despite my strong dislike for Natalie I’ve always thought she was a beautiful girl, but even that is fading after seeing this picture.

  45. jane16 says:

Hated the dress, could hardly look at it. Not fond of the blah hairstyle or plain looking lips either. Her eyes look pretty though.

  46. B says:

Not loving the dress (especially the odd protrusion from her hip-looks like she got a hanger caught in it). But I’m positively baffled by the comments stating that she isn’t a pretty as she once was.

  47. Mi says:

That freakin bump in the back….it looks like she farted in the dress and it got stuck. And I can’t deal with her eyebrows, they bother me.

  48. whatevs says:

a bit darker hue of pink would have been perfect. she usually doesn’t dress well though so i’ll give her props for this effort. btw did anybody else think “i was perfect” when the camera panned on her? it’s like they intentionally black swanified her eye make up. i loved it tho

  49. Moon says:

Benjamin Millepied won’t loose the chance to be in front of a camera; the guy LOVES it. I wonder if Natalie has ever asked herself what’s the main reason why he’s with her…status, fame and privilage? yeah, exactly. That said, they really seem to deserve each other.

  50. Whart90 says:

That’s one amazing NOSEJOB, Miss Hershlag. Who does she think she’s kidding with that ” 100% natural beauty” crap?

    • Mouse says:

Not me. I don’t know where the beauty part comes in, she’s got a nice figure but I’ve always thought she’s ridiculously plain and she’s definitely messed with her face.
