Jim Carrey’s daughter auditions for American Idol and gets through: deserving?

Jim Carrey’s 24 year-old daughter, Jane, was shown auditioning for American Idol in San Diego, the episode for which aired last night. Jane explained in a taped video segment that she is “a mom first, a waitress on and off and a musician.” She said that she’s “been singing for as long as I can remember” and that she’s a big ham. Well it seems to run in her family. As for how it was growing up with Jim Carrey as her father she said he’s “definitely not the most extravagant celebrity so it’s been fairly normal.” Jim was married to Jane’s mom, his first wife Melissa Womer, from 1987 to 1995. Jim and Melissa divorced when Jane was eight. (Then Jim married Lauren Holly for a hot minute in 1996.) Jane explained that she came on Idol to “make my place in the world” and that she doesn’t want people to think her success comes from her famous dad.

Jane sang a brief segment of “Something to Talk About” and she was competent and showed potential but she wasn’t amazing. I don’t think she would have gotten through to the next round if it wasn’t for her famous dad. Here’s more and there’s a video below.

Jim Carrey’s daughter Jane Carrey was among the hopefuls at the San Diego round of American Idol auditions.

Jane, 24, told viewers that she had been singing for as long as she could remember and that her famous father knew that she planned to audition for the Fox singing competition.

“It was definitely fun growing up with him as a father,” she said. “He’s definitely not the most extravagant celebrity so it’s been fairly normal. Fairly!”

Jane added: “The last name definitely helps and hurts. I feel like there is this pressure to maybe be better. If I make it somewhere it runs the risk of people saying, ‘You’re only here because of this’.”

Judge Jennifer Lopez immediately remembered Jane from when she had worked with Jim Carrey several years ago, saying that Jane had only been a baby at the time and jokingly lamenting where the years had gone.

Jane chose to perform ‘Something To Talk About’ as her audition song, earning three yeses from Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson.

Randy liked her voice and potential, while Jennifer thought she needed to think more about her ‘performance’ because keeping her eyes shut might be good for the feeling but didn’t help with audience connection.

Steven liked Jane’s melody but told her to work on the volume.

After receiving her ticket to Hollywood, Jane phoned her famous dad who said: “She’s so wonderful and amazing to me, I can’t wait for the world to see… This is going to be an exciting year.”

[From Digital Spy]

Jane is a talented singer and she seemed sweet and like she was genuine about succeeding on her own merits. I don’t see her going too far on Idol, but we’ll see.

My favorite part of this video is where Jennifer Lopez says she met Jane when Jane was two and just a baby on the set of “In Living Color,” where Jim Carrey got his start and J.Lo was a backup dancer/”Fly Girl.” Lopez’s boyfriend Casper Smart is the same age as Jane, 24. I’m sure that didn’t occur to J.Lo when she told that story.

    Loving the classy maple leaf tattoo…

    • Bubbling says:

      lol 🙂

    • Renee says:

      Aww, haha, I was going to say I liked it non-sarcastically. I don’t care for the placement, but I think it’s a sweet way to symbolize dual-citizenship and her love for both countries.

      • Emily says:

        Yeah, I thought it was cute, too. Although I’d prefer it if it was something smaller, maybe on her wrist or something.

  2. Lisa says:

    Man…I SO WANT Jenny & Jim back together again…

    GET IT TOGETHER JIM!!!

  3. Minty says:

    Ugh. So tired of rampant Hollywood nepotism. There are some exceptions, of course, but the majority of celebrity offspring don’t equal (much less surpass)the talents of their parents.

    • Asli says:

      I agree. I think that these “stars” need to make it clear that going to college and getting your education is very important. But apparently that’s not cool and a part of “the lifestyle”. Whatever.

    • Kimlee says:

      I agree but she auditing for American Idol which she going to have to work hard at to get people to vote for her instead of having daddy getting her a recorded deal or produceing movies for her like Willow Smith and her brother who parents brought them everything in a awards.

      • Tazina says:

        She’s going to have to do it herself. Daddy has nothing to do with how long she lasts on American Idol. It doesn’t sound like he’s been overly generous with his daughter which she indicated. Waitressing? That’s a bit extreme when your father is a multi-millionaire but maybe it’s been good for her.

  4. GoodCapon says:

    I haven’t seen Jim Carrey in a while… I miss him in a weird way.

  5. Marjalane says:

    Yeah….a cute girl, but much better singers have been sent packing.

  6. Jackie says:

    she seems like a sweet, down to earth girl.

  7. NM9005 says:

    Please, some of these people who go through are just pretty enough with a mediocre voice so why wouldn’t she be allowed to go through? I love her voice, it’s good and can only improve. She seems grounded, rational and real.

  8. SHump76 says:

    I’ve heard worse on that show.

    On the other hand, Jenny McCarthy is the devil and I’m glad he’s rid of her.

    • constance says:

      Agreed. I grew to dislike Jim for supporting her claim that’s she cured the autism in her son. So F all of their phony asses. Shes lame for going to a reality show to get famous. They are so passe.

  9. Angel says:

    I love Jim so much and she is talented and well-spoken and very likable. I think she would have gotten through either way.

  10. LeManda says:

    I would actually watch this season to she how she does…so good job Idol marketing team.

  11. Franny says:

    I want to like Jenny McCarthy because she is pretty and would be likable…if only it weren’t for her damn misguided attitude towards vaccinations. I just can’t even with that whole mess.

    • Jules says:

      Um, Jenny wants better vaccinations for children with less harmful ingredients…nothing wrong with that!

      • Franny says:

        Jenny claims that she has cured her son of autism, and has lead a crusade in not vaccinating children…based on 1 study that was run by a doctor who had his medical liceanse revoked because of how he spun his “data”.

        If she just wanted “greener” vaccinations (what exactly does that mean) I would have no problem with her.

      • SHump76 says:

        Um, no. Jenny wants people to believe whatever delusional thing she comes up with regarding her son’s illness. He’s an Indigo child! Oh no, wait… he’s autistic and vaccines are to blame! But wait, he’s not ACTUALLY even autistic. But FORGET that! You should endanger your children by disrupting their vaccination schedule or not getting them vaccinated at all ANYWAY. Because I think vaccines are bad, even though numerous medical studies have shown that they aren’t!

        Yeah… right. Nothing wrong with that.

      • Rose says:

        That is complete nonsense Jules. She’s a conwoman, and a dangerous one at that, happy to destroy herd immunity on her quack crusade.

      • Josie says:

        It’s funny because Jenny’s science is wrong but it turns out that CBS news did a story on how there is human DNA in some vaccines and they go on to explain that while there is no proof that vaccines (not all) are to blame for Autism, there is no proof they don’t either.

        Here’s the link:
        http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_162-20049118-10391695.html

        And I don’t even think that Jenny ever thought of this or the movement of parents that are concerned about vaccines and Autism. Here’s the link:

  12. SamiHami says:

    Seems like a nice girl, but if she weren’t the child of a celebrity I doubt she would have made it through to the next round. It would have been interesting if she had not revealed her parentage when she auditioned.

    • Minty says:

      Exactly. If some celebrity’s spawn wants to “make my place in the world”, it would be impressive if he/she didn’t advertise the famous connection. They could audition with a stage name and see how much harder it is when nobody knows who their parents are.

  13. no thanks says:

    she was crap…

  14. TheOriginalVictoria says:

    She could be Miley’s older sister!

    Her voice was good but not great especially compared to the others that got through. So yeah, I think she got in based somewhat on her name but that means nothing in Brutal Hollyhell Week. She has to prove herself.

  15. kiko says:

    she is ok.not great but ok..

  16. Bizzach says:

    I would do ANYTHING for another Ace Ventura movie. Jim carrey is so talented! Did anyone see his performance at Meryl Streep’s Lifetime Achievement ceremony? Old news, I know but the guy’s got unparalleled skill:)

  17. Hip-ster says:

    She is really goofy looking.

  18. Talie says:

    The only part I don’t get is why the hell she was ever a waitress!! Anyway, she was very likable and sweet, so I agree, she would’ve got through without him.

    • constance says:

      Its probably a lie to make her look, you know, like one of us working people.

    • Brigitte says:

      Just to clear this up, Jane does NOT need to work as a waitress; I saw some court papers a while back on Jim’s child support, and it was about 50K a month. The papers itemized stuff like “Pilates classes” etc. This chick doesn’t need to stoop to waitressing (like me).

  19. Roxy750 says:

    She’s adorable. She does seem very nice, down to earth and just trying to do her own thing. Just b/c her dad is famous doesn’t mean she can’t be who she is. Your damned either way I guess. Anyway, I thought she was good! Best of luck

  20. fabgrrl says:

    Thank you for making the Casper Smart age connection, I never would have noticed otherwise.

  21. Hautie says:

    “Lopez’s boyfriend Casper Smart is the same age as Jane, 24. I’m sure that didn’t occur to J.Lo when she told that story.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    hahahaha! You know Jennifer didn’t even consider it.
  22. Reece says:
    I don’t think she’ll make it past the Hollywood stuff.
    I love her tattoo!
  23. Kathy says:
    Man, in that first pic you can see that she and her dad have the exact same nose. She’s a pretty girl with a decent voice who seems willing to work hard and improve. Give her a chance.
  24. RobN says:
    AI isn’t about finding the best singer; it’s about tv ratings. Some people will be curious about her and that’s good enough.
    • Jover says:
      Robn you’re exactly right and I can’t believe after all these years contestants and wannabies don’t know how the game works. Last year an issue of Elle had a small article buried near the back where they interviewed a female producer of the show and she said only half of AI is about actual singing; we know what the other half is about. that in itself doesn’t make it bad, but AI is hardly about finding the next Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin or Selena.
  25. Marianne says:
    Alhtough it might seem unfair to other contestants, I have to give her props for choosing this method rather than get her dad to set her up an appointment with the head of a label.
    • Kathy says:
      True. She can’t help being born to a wealthy dad any more than she could have helped being born to a dad with very little money. Now that she is an adult, she seems to be trying to do the right thing and work hard. We’ll see over the next few weeks/months.
  26. serena says:
    She’s really so cute!
  27. Jover says:
    Agree with most of the above; but I’m no longer a fan of these talent shows – were getting way too much mediocre manufactured music; not authentic music created by the individual – did anyone read the interview with Keith Richards several weeks ago in USA today – he’s old school, of course, but he said you want to make it get a band together and go on the road, not get lucky on some “talent” show. Who on this site would say old Keithy doesn’t know what he’s talking about?
    • aprayerforthewildatheart says:
      Exactly, I can’t understand the people who still haven’t made the connection that this is just another ‘reality’ show. I haven’t watched it in years. The ‘winners’ never go anywhere, and you only hear about them if they have some kind of drama a la Fantasia Barino. The AI ship is sinking.
  28. EJV says:
    The talent shows in America are all set up, please. She is okay, not great. Not many of them are though.
  29. Amanda G says:
    What a pretty girl! Not a great voice, but okay enough to go through.
    I still can’t believe how badly Jim is aging.
  30. Roscoe says:
    I mean, I understand the whole nepotism thing, and “making it on your own”, but I don’t feel like there’s anything wrong with being up front about your family.
    I mean my dad isn’t famous, but I love him so much, and I’m proud to be his son, so I would want the world to know who my dad is, and I couldn’t imagine that changing if he was well known, and that’s how she came across to me, and I think that’s sweet.
    I’ll be interested to see how she goes. I think she had a lovely voice but was just a little nervous. I hope she does well!
  31. Adrien says:
    She seems nice and not pratty looking as I’d expect a Hollywood spawn. Like a nicer version of Miley Cyrus and older Allison Pill. If she’s not Jim’s daughter, I’ll let her through only because she’s spunky and likable. She does not have a spectacular voice but so did a lot of AI finalists. Plus, she’s a regular person with a real job (a waitress) working her way to the top.
  32. LittleDeadGrrl says:
    My issue with the whole thing is that the supposed point of the show was to give people that didn’t otherwise have a chance to showcase their “talent”. Her parents are rich and famous. She could easily get her music, her band, her whatever together, and be given a chance to audition in front of a music producer if her wish was truly to be a singer.
  33. guilty pleasures says:
    Hmm, lots of (shallow) things to ponder here. I saw her audition, and thought, ‘meh, nothing here.’ and judged her on the fact of her being JC’s daughter…
    THEN I got to thinking about the fact that most of these reality show people- who get through- have some sort of back story, homelessness, sick or dead parents, personal tragedy, something…it’s not about talent alone.
    So, she’s cute, she has a story, she doesn’t completely suck= ratings….
  34. fai says:
    As much as i hate nepotism, i havn’t seen this girl stumbling arnd in clubs like the moore/willis girls. But she’s going to have to work twice as hard and if she has talent then work it. At least shes up front abt it. People like rashida jones, zooey deschanel and rooney mara (who act like they didnt get roles because of their parents) pi*ss me off.
  35. bettyrose says:
    The first thing she did when she got before the judges was introduce herself as Jim Carrey’s daughter. Why did she do that?
    • The Flamingo Kid says:
      She introduced herself as Jim Carrey’s daughter because most likely she has been paid to do this to bring attention/controversy to the new season in order to garner viewers. There is no “reality” tv that is actually “reality.” It is all staged to some degree or another.
  36. The Flamingo Kid says:
    I think it is really strange that she has been working as a waitress when her father is mega rich. It seems as though she is not the typical spoiled celebrity-child brat. I wonder if maybe IDOL came up with the idea to use her to bring attention and attract new interest to the new season. It seems like she is being used big time.
